BURGOS (ISVEGLIES), ALESSANDRO. - Conventual Franciscan, philosopher, theologian, orator, and historian of vast learning and most pious life, b. at Messina in 1668, d. at Catania on 20 July 1726. He taught at Rome, Perugia, Turin, Padua and Bologna, where he was also theologian and synodal examiner. Much esteemed by the learned men of his time and very well known in the pontifical Curia, he was a consultor of the Index, a member of the Arcadia and of other Italian and foreign Academies, and finally elected and consecrated by Benedict XIII (20 Feb. 1726) bishop of Catania.
He published various works of philosophy, theology, ecclesiastical history and poetry, and various juridical-moral disquisitions, discourses and treatises on eloquence and on ascetics. The most important of all is the De Scriptoribus ecclesiasticis veteribus, praemissa Artis Criticae et eius regularum notitia, judged an "opus ingens" (manuscript).
