BURGOS (ISVEGLIES), ALESSANDRO. - Conventual Franciscan Minor, philosopher, theologian, orator, and historian of extensive learning and most pious life, b. at Messina in 1668, d. at Catania on 20 July 1726. He taught at Rome, Perugia, Turin, Padua, and Bologna, where he was also theologian and synodal examiner. Much esteemed by the learned men of his time and very well known in the pontifical Curia, he was consultant to the Index, member of the Arcadia and of other Italian and foreign Academies, and was finally elected and consecrated by Benedetto XIII (20 Feb. 1726) bishop of Catania.
He published various works on philosophy, theology, ecclesiastical history, and poetry, as well as various juridical-moral dissertations, discourses, and treatises on eloquence and asceticism. The most important of all is the De Scriptoribus ecclesiasticis veteribus, praemissa Artis Criticae et eius regularum notitia, judged an « opus ingens » (manuscript).
