ECUMENIO. - Comes of Isauria in the first half of the sixth century, correspondent and adherent of the Monophysite Severo. Author of a commentary on the Apocalypse, published by C. H. Hoskier (The complete Commentary of Oecumenias on the Apocalypse [University of Michigan Studies, Humanistic series, 23], Ann Arbor 1928). Among his theological authorities he names: Atanasio, Basilio, Gregorio Nazianzeno, Metodio, Cirillo, and the commentary of Ippolito on Daniel. Moreover, he knew Eusebio di Cesarea, Evagrio Pontico, Clemente Alessandrino, and Ireneo.
His commentary was used by Areta and Andrea di Cesarea. The commentaries on the Acts of the Apostles and on the Epistles of Paolo and the Catholic letters (PG 118, 119), of more recent date, are wrongly attributed to E., but contain certain fragments, which are E.’s marginal glosses on the homilies of S. Giovanni Crisostomo (the fragments on the Pauline Epistles in Karl Staab, Paulschammentare aus der griechischen Kirche [Neustentamentliche Abhandlungen, 15], Münster 1933, p. 423 ff. and p. XXXVII f. of the introduction). This E. must be distinguished from Bishop E. of Potica, who lived in the tenth century.
