SONS OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS. - This Congregation, dependent on the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda, is also known by the name of Institute of the African Missions of Verona. In 1867 Msgr. Daniele Comboni began in Verona a seminary for the Nigrizia, which was then canonically erected by decree of 8 Dec. 1871 by the bishop of Verona, which his successor Msgr. Francesco Sogaro transformed (1885) into a religious Congregation. It received the «decretum laudis» in 1895 and the definitive approval of its constitutions in 1910. In 1923 the German branch became autonomous, constituting the Congregation of the missionary Sons of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The purpose of the Institute is the conversion of unbelievers and in particular of those in Africa. At present it has 25 houses in Italy, England, Portugal, the United States, and carries on missionary apostolate in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, in Uganda, Egypt, Eritrea, Mozambique, among the Negroes and Indians of the United States and in Mexico. It numbers over 800 professed, 160 novices, 600 aspirants.
