MATTHEW, Bishop of Albano. - Cardinal, b. at Laon ca. 1085, d. at Pisa on 28 Dec. 1134.

First a Cistercian at St-Martin-des-Champs in Paris, he later transferred to the Cluniacs (1122), drawn by Peter the Venerable, who took him along with him to Rome, where Honorius II in 1126 created him cardinal bishop of Albano and sent him the following year as his legate to France. There he convened various synods: at Troyes, Rouen, Reims in 1128, at Chalon and at Paris in 1129. Against the antipope Anacletus he took the side of Innocent II, by whom he was sent to Germany, where he celebrated a synod at Mainz. Having fallen into disfavor with the Pontiff, he was recalled to Rome; after the Council of Pisa (1134), he was sent with St. Bernard to Milan to bring the adherents of Anacletus back to obedience to the Pope. On his return, he died at Pisa.
