Sennacherib king of Assyria inuading Iuda, king Ezechias encorageth the people, and prouideth to defend the countrie. 9. the Assyrians threaten the people, and blaspheme God. 20. Ezechias and Isaias pray. 21. An Angel destroyeth the Assyrians armie, so their king retiring home, is slayne in his idols temple, by his owne sonnes. 22. Ezechias reigneth in peace, 24. falleth into deadlie sicknes, but miraculously recouereth, offendeth in pryde, and repenteth. 27. is exceding rich, which he imprudently sheweth to strangers: 32. dieth, and Manasses succedeth.
1After these things, and this truth, Sennacherib king of the Assyrians came and entered into Juda, and besieged the fenced cities, desiring to take them.Dopo queste, e simili opere di giustizia, Sennacherib re degli Assiri si mosse, ed entrato sulle terre di Giuda, assediò le città forti per espugnarle.AFTER which thinges, and this maner of truth, came Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians, and entering into Iuda, besieged the fensed cities, desirous to take them.Post quæ et hujuscemodi veritatem, venit Sennacherib rex Assyriorum, et ingressus Judam, obsedit civitates munitas, volens eas capere. 2And when Ezechias saw that Sennacherib was come, and that the whole force of the war was turning against Jerusalem,Lo che vedendo Ezechia, viene a dire, che Sennacherib si avvicinavo e che tutto l'impeto della guerra si rivolgeva contro Gerusalemme.Which when Ezechias had sene, to witte, that Sennacherib was come, and the whole force of the battel to be turned agaynst Ierusalem,Quod cum vidisset Ezechias, venisse scilicet Sennacherib, et totum belli impetum verti contra Jerusalem, 3He took counsel with the princes, and the most valiant men, to stop up the heads of the springs, that were without the city: and as they were all of this mind,Tenuto consiglio co' suoi' grandi, e cogli uomini più valorosi, ed essendo concorsi tutti nel parere di turare le sorgive della fontana, che eran fuori della città.taking counsel with the princes, and the most valiant men, to stoppe vp the heades of the fountaynes, that were without the citie: and the sentence of them al decreing this, inito cum principibus consilio, virisque fortissimis, ut obturarent capita fontium qui erant extra urbem: et hoc omnium decernente sententia, 4He gathered together a very great multitude, and they stopped up all the springs, and the brook, that ran through the midst of the land, saying: Lest the kings of the Assyrians should come, and find abundance of water.Raunò grandissimo numero di gente, e turarono tutte le fontane e il ruscello, che scorreva per il territorio dicendo: Affinchè venendo i re degli Assiri non trovin copia di acque.he gathered a very great multitude, & they stopped vp al the fountaynes, and the riuer, that ranne in the middes of the land, saying: Lest the kinges of the Assyrians come, and finde abundance of waters.congregavit plurimam multitudinem, et obturaverunt cunctos fontes, et rivum qui fluebat in medio terræ, dicentes: Ne veniant reges Assyriorum, et inveniant aquarum abundantiam. 5He built up also with great diligence all the wall that had been broken down, and built towers upon it, and another wall without: and he repaired Mello in the city of David, and made all sorts of arms and shields:Egli parimente usando ogni diligenza riparò tutta la muraglia, che era rovinata, e vi fabbricò sopra delle torri, e un altro muro al di fuori; e restaurò Mello nella città di David, e fece armi di ogni sorta, e scudi:He built also doing industriously euerie wall that had bene destroyed, and built towers vpon them, and an other wall without: and he repayred Mello in the citie of Dauid, and made armour and shildes of al sortes:Ædificavit quoque, agens industrie, omnem murum qui fuerat dissipatus, et exstruxit turres desuper, et forinsecus alterum murum: instauravitque Mello in civitate David, et fecit universi generis armaturam et clypeos:
6And he appointed captains of the soldiers of the army: and he called them all together in the street of the gate of the city, and spoke to their heart, saying:E nominò i comandanti dell'esercito, e gli adunò tutti quanti sulla piazza della porta della città, e parlò al loro cuore, dicendo:And he appointed princes of warryers in the armie: and he called them al together in the streate of the gate of the citie, and spake to their hart, saying:constituitque principes bellatorum in exercitu, et convocavit universos in platea portæ civitatis, ac locutus est ad cor eorum, dicens: 7Behave like men, and take courage: be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of the Assyrians, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there are many more with us than with him. Doe manfully, and take courage: feare not, neither dread ye the king of the Assyrians, and al the multitude, that is with him: for there are manie moe with vs, then with him. 8For with him is an arm of flesh: with us the Lord our God, who is our helper, and fighteth for us. And the people were encouraged with these words of Ezechias king of Juda. For with him is an arme of flesh: with vs the Lord our God, which is our helper, and fighteth for vs. And the people was encouraged with these maner of wordes of Ezechias the king of Iuda. 9After this, Sennacherib king of the Assyrians sent his servants to Jerusalem, (for he with all his army was besieging Lachis,) to Ezechias king of Juda, and to all the people that were in the city, saying:Dopo che tali cose furon fatte, Sennacherib re degli Assiri (il quale con tutto il suo esercito assediava Lachis) spedì suoi messi ad Ezechia re di Giuda, e a tutto il popolo, che era nella città, i quali dissero:Which thinges after they were done, Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians sent his seruantes to Ierusalem (for himself with al his armie beseiged Lachis) to Ezechias the king of Iuda, & to al the people, that was in the citie, saying:Quæ postquam gesta sunt, misit Sennacherib rex Assyriorum servos suos in Jerusalem (ipse enim cum universo exercitu obsidebat Lachis) ad Ezechiam regem Juda, et ad omnem populum qui erat in urbe, dicens:
10Thus saith Sennacherib king of the Assyrians: In whom do you trust, that you sit still besieged in Jerusalem?Queste cose dice Sennacherib re degli Assiri: su quale speranza ve ne state voi chiusi in Gerusalemme? Thus sayth Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians: In whom hauing affiance, doe you sitte besieged in Ierusalem?Hæc dicit Sennacherib rex Assyriorum: In quo habentes fiduciam sedetis obsessi in Jerusalem ? 11Doth not Ezechias deceive you, to give you up to die by hunger and thirst, affirming that the Lord your God shall deliver you from the hand of the king of the Assyrians?V'inganna forse Ezechia per farvi morire di fame, e di sete, assicurandovi, che il Signore Dio vostri vi libererà dalle mani del re degli Assiri?Hath Ezechias deceiued you, to deliuer you to death in hunger and thirst, affirming that the Lord your God can deliuer you from the hand of the king of the Assyrians?num Ezechias decipit vos, ut tradat morti in fame et siti, affirmans quod Dominus Deus vester liberet vos de manu regis Assyriorum ? 12Is it not this same Ezechias, that hath destroyed his high places, and his altars, and commanded Juda and Jerusalem, saying: You shall worship before one altar, and upon it you shall burn incense? Why, is not this Ezechias, that hath destroyed his excelses, and altars, and hath commanded Iuda & Ierusalem, saying: Before one altar you shal adore, and on it you shal burne incense?Numquid non iste est Ezechias, qui destruxit excelsa illius, et altaria, et præcepit Juda et Jerusalem, dicens: Coram altari uno adorabitis, et in ipso comburetis incensum ? 13Know you not what I and my fathers have done to all the people of the lands? have the gods of any nations and lands been able to deliver their country out of my hand? Are you ignorant what thinges I haue done, and my fathers to al the peoples of the landes? haue the goddes of nations, and of al landes bene able to deliuer their countrie out of my hand?an ignoratis quæ ego fecerim, et patres mei, cunctis terrarum populis ? numquid prævaluerunt dii gentium, omniumque terrarum, liberare regionem suam de manu mea ? 14Who is there among all the gods of the nations, which my fathers have destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of this hand? Who is there of al the goddes of the nations, which my fathers wasted, that could deliuer his people out of my hand, that your God also can deliuer you out of this hand?
15Therefore let not Ezechias deceive you, nor delude you with a vain persuasion, and do not believe him. For if no god of all the nations and kingdoms, could deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers, consequently neither shall your God be able to deliver you out of my hand. Let not therfore Ezechias deceiue you, nor delude you with vayne persuasion, neither beleue ye him. For if no god o• al nations and kingdomes, could deliuer his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers, consequently neither shal your God be able to deliuer you out of my hand.non vos ergo decipiat Ezechias, nec vana persuasione deludat, neque credatis ei. 16And many other things did his servants speak against the Lord God, and against Ezechias his servant.E molte altre cose dissero i servi di Sennacherib contro il Signore Dio, e in biasimo di Ezechia suo servo.Yea and manie other thinges did his seruantes speake, agaynst our Lord God, and agaynst Ezechias his seruant. 17He wrote also letters full of blasphemy against the Lord the God of Israel, and he spoke against him: As the gods of other nations could not deliver their people out of my hand, so neither can the God of Ezechias deliver his people out of this hand. Letters also he wrote ful of blasphemie against our Lord the God of Israel, and he spake agaynst him: as the goddes of their nations could not deliuer their people out of my hand, so the God also of Ezechias can not deliuer his people out of this hand. 18Moreover he cried out with a loud voice, in the Jews’ tongue, to the people that sat on the walls of Jerusalem, that he might frighten them, and take the city.È oltre a ciò ad altissima voce in lingua Ebrea sgridava il popolo, che stava sulle mura di Gerusalemme, per isbigottirlo, e così prendere la città.Moreouer also with a lowd crie, in the Iewes tongue, he sounded against the people, that sate on the walles of Ierusalem, that he might terrifie them, and take the citie.
19And he spoke against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, the works of the hands of men.E parlava del Dio di Gerusalemme, come degli dei delle nazioni della terra, lavori di mano d'uomo. And he spake agaynst the God of Ierusalem, as agaynst the goddes of the peoples of the earth, the workes of mens handes.Locutusque est contra Deum Jerusalem, sicut adversum deos populorum terræ, opera manuum hominum. 20And Ezechias the king, and Isaias the prophet the son of Amos, prayed against this blasphemy, and cried out to heaven. Ezechias therfore the king, and Isaias the prophet the sonne of Amos, prayed agaynst this blasphemie, and cried out euen to heauen. 21And the Lord sent an angel, who cut off all the stout men and the warriors, and the captains of the army of the king of the Assyrians: and he returned with disgrace into his own country. And when he was come into the house of his god, his sons that came out of his bowels, slew him with the sword.E il Signore mandò un Angelo, il quale uccise tutti gli uomini forti, e valorosi, e il capo dell'esercito del re degli Assiri, il quale se ne tornò svergognato al suo paese. And our Lord sent an Angel, which stroke euerie strong man, and warryer, and prince of the armie of the king of the Assyrians: and he returned with ignominie into his countrie. And when he was entered into the house of his God, his sonnes that were come forth of his wombe, slewe him with the sword. 22And the Lord saved Ezechias and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of the hand of Sennacherib king of the Assyrians, and out of the hand of all, and gave them treasures on every side. And our Lord saued Ezechias and the inhabitantes of Ierusalem, out of the hand of Sennacherib the king of the Assyrians, and out of the hand of al, & gaue them rest round about.
23Many also brought victims, and sacrifices to the Lord to Jerusalem, and presents to Ezechias king of Juda: and he was magnified thenceforth in the sight of all nations.E molti eziandio portavan vittime, e offerivano sagrifizj al Signore in Gerusalemme, e doni ad Ezechia re di Giuda, il quale da indi in poi divenne famoso presso tutte le genti.Manie also brought hostes, and sacrifices to our Lord into Ierusalem, and giftes to Ezechias the king of Iuda: who was exalted after these thinges before al nations. 24In those days Ezechias was sick even to death, and he prayed to the Lord: and he heard him, and gave him a sign. In those daies Ezechias was sick euen to death, and he prayed our Lord: and he heard him, and gaue him a signe. 25But he did not render again according to the benefits which he had received, for his heart was lifted up: and wrath was enkindled against him, and against Juda and Jerusalem. But not according to the benefites, which he receiued, did he recompense, because his hart was eleuated: and wrath came agaynst him, and agaynst Iuda and Ierusalem. 26And he humbled himself afterwards, because his heart had been lifted up, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and therefore the wrath of the Lord came not upon them in the days of Ezechias. And he was humbled afterward, because his hart had bene exalted, both he and the inhabitantes of Ierusalem: and therfore the wrath of our Lord came not vpon them in the daies of Ezechias. 27And Ezechias was rich, and very glorious, and he gathered himself great treasures of silver and of gold, and of precious stones, of spices, and of arms, of all kinds, and of vessels of great price.Ed Ezechia fu ricco, e di gran nome, e si adunò girandi tesori di argento, e di oro, e di pietre preziose, e di aromi, e d'armi d'ogni genere, a di vasi di gran pregio:And Ezechias was rich, and glorious excedingly and gathered to himself great treasures of siluer and of gold, and of pretious stone, of spices, and of armour of al kinde, and of vessels of great price.
28Storehouses also of corn, of wine, and of oil, and stalls for all beasts, and folds for cattle.E de' maggazzini di grano, e di vino, e di olio, e delle stalle di ogni specie giumenti, e ovili di pecore.Storehouses also of corne, of wyne, and of oyle, and stalles of al beastes, and foldes of cattel,Apothecas quoque frumenti, vini, et olei, et præsepia omnium jumentorum, caulasque pecorum, 29And he built himself cities: for he had flocks of sheep, and herds without number, for the Lord had given him very much substance.Ed egli edificò delle città: perocché aveva innumerabili greggi di pecore, perchè il Signore gli avea date stragrandi ricchezze.and six cities he built to him self: for he had flockes of sheepe, and of heardes innumerable, because our Lord had geuen him substance exceding much.et urbes ædificavit sibi: habebat quippe greges ovium et armentorum innumerabiles, eo quod dedisset ei Dominus substantiam multam nimis. 30This same Ezechias was, he that stopped the upper source of the waters of Gihon, and turned them away underneath toward the west of the city of David: in all his works he did prosperously what he would. The same is Ezechias, that stopped the vpper fountaine of the waters of Gihon, and turned them away vnderneth toward the West of the Citie of Dauid: in al his workes he did prosperously what he would. 31But yet in the embassy of the princes of Babylon, that were sent to him, to inquire of the wonder that had happened upon the earth, God left him that he might be tempted, and all things might be made known that were in his heart. But yet in the embassie of the princes of Babylon, that were sent to him, to aske of the wonder, that had chanced vpon the earth, God leift him that he might be tempted, and al thinges might be made knowen, that were in his hart.
32Now the rest of the acts of Ezechias, and of his mercies are written in the book of the kings of Juda and Israel. But the rest of the wordes of Ezechias, and of his mercies are writen in the vision of Isaias the sonne of Amos the prophete, and in the booke of the kinges of Iuda & Israel. 33And Ezechias slept with his fathers, and they buried him above the sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Juda, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem celebrated his funeral: and Manasses his son reigned in his stead. And Ezechias slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefe sepulchres of the children of Dauid: and al Iuda celebrated his funeralles, & al the inhabitantes of Ierusalem: and Manasses his sonne reigned for him.

City. The torrent Cedron afforded the only good supply of water. It was often dry, and was only three steps across, when full of melted snow or rain. The waters of Siloe and Gihon were collected in it. Yet it was no very difficult enterprise for the king to turn the stream, and introduce the waters through the rock into a large reservoir, in the city, by the canal, which is mentioned [in] 2 Esdras 2:14., and Ecclesiasticus 48:19. The besieged were more frequently deprived of water, Judith 7:6. 21. MISIT DOMINUS ANGELUM. Porro Sennacherib, accepta clade in Judæa, fugit rediitque in suam Niniven, ubi sæviit in Judæos, multosque occidit; adeo ut Tobias eos sepeliens, bonis omnibus exutus mortem fugiendo evaserit, a qua fuga post dies 43 Sennacherib a filiis occisus est: quæ omnia narrantur Tobiæ, cap. 1, vers. 21, et sequent. Eamdem R. Salomonis causam tradit S. Hieronymus in Tradit. Eamdemque ex textu Hebræo Tobiæ, cap. 1. refert Serarius, ac Genebrardus in Chronol. Aliam causam afferunt Lyranus et Abulensis in lib. IV Reg. cap. xv, Quæst. XXXI, scilicet Sennacherib occisum esse a duobus filiis senioribus, quoniam pater eis postpositis, Assarhaddonem minorem natu successorem regni esse vellet. Cujus electionis causam refert Historia Scholastica in amorem, quo Sennacherib matrem Assarhaddonis prosequebatur.
