1 a celebrarla devotamente. — 4.

1 to celebrate it devoutly. — 4. Granting indulgence to those celebrating it.
2 Urban, bishop, servant of the servants of God, to our venerable brothers, patriarchs, archbishops, bishops, and other prelates of the Churches, to whom these letters shall come, greeting and apostolic benediction.
3 Our Saviour Lord Jesus Christ, about to depart from this world to the Father, when the time of His Passion was at hand, having taken the Supper in memory of His death, instituted the supreme and magnificent sacrament of His Body and Blood, giving His Body as food and His Blood as drink. For as often as we eat this Bread and drink the Cup, we announce the death of the Lord. In the institution indeed of this Sacrament He Himself said to the Apostles: Do this in remembrance of me; so that this most excellent and venerable Sacrament might be to us the principal and distinguished memorial of His singular love, by which He loved us; a memorial, I say, wonderful and amazing, delightful, sweet, most safe, and above all precious, in which the signs have been renewed and the wonders changed, in which is contained all delight and every sweetness of flavour, and the very sweetness of the Lord is tasted, in which truly we obtain the aid of life and salvation. This is the sweetest memorial, the saving memorial, in which we gratefully recall the memory of our Redemption, in which we are drawn back from evil and strengthened in good, and advance to the increase of virtues and graces, in which truly we advance through the very bodily presence of the Saviour. For other things, whose memory we celebrate, we embrace in spirit and mind: but we do not on that account obtain their real presence. But in this sacramental commemoration of Christ, Jesus Christ is present, under another form indeed, but in His own substance with us. For about to ascend into heaven, He said to the Apostles and their followers: Behold I am with you all days even to the consummation of the world; comforting them with this benign promise,
4 lacerated.
5 that He would remain and be with them also in bodily presence. O worthy and never-to-be-interrupted memory, in which we recall our death made dead, and our intention perished, and the life-giving wood affixed to the wood of the Cross, brought forth for us the fruit of salvation. This is the glorious commemoration, which fills the minds of the faithful with saving joy, and with the infusion of gladness supplies tears of devotion. We exult indeed remembering our liberation, and recalling the Passion of the Lord, by which we were freed, we scarcely contain our tears. In this therefore most sacred commemoration there are present to us both the sweetness of joy and tears: because in it we rejoice weeping together, and we weep devoutly rejoicing, having joyful tears and joy weeping, for even a heart suffused with great joy lets fall sweet drops through the eyes. O immensity of divine love, superabundance of divine mercy, abundance of divine generosity! For the Lord gave us all things, which He subjected under our feet, and over all the creatures of the earth He conferred upon us the principal dominion. He even ennobles and exalts the dignity of man from the ministers of the superior spirits. For they are all administrators in ministry, destined on account of those who receive the inheritance of salvation. And when His munificence toward us has been so abundant, wishing still Himself to show in us His overflowing charity in a special manner of gift, He exhibited Himself, and transcending all the fullness of generosity, exceeding all measure of love, attributed Himself as food. O singular and admirable gift, where the giver comes in the gift, and the gift is entirely the same with the giver! How generous and lavish the gift, when one gives himself! He gave therefore Himself to us as nourishment, so that, because man had fallen through death, and through food he himself might be raised up to life. Man fell through the food of the tree of death, man was raised up through the food of the tree of life. In that hung the food of death, in this hung the nourishment of life. That eating merited injury, this tasting brought health. Tasting wounded, and tasting healed. See, that from where the wound arose, thence also came the remedy; and from where death entered, thence life came forth. Of that indeed it is said: In whatsoever day thou shalt eat thereof, thou shalt die the death; but of this He speaks: If any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever. This is the food which fully refreshes, truly nourishes, and most abundantly fattens not the body, but the heart, not the flesh, but the soul, not the belly, but the mind. To man therefore, who needed spiritual nourishment, the Saviour Himself, merciful, from the nobler and more powerful food of this world for the refreshment of the soul made provision; and fitting generosity shone forth, and becoming operation of mercy, so that the eternal Word of God, which is the food and refreshment of the rational creature, made flesh, might give Himself to the flesh and body of the rational creature, namely man, as food: for man ate the bread of angels, and therefore the Saviour says: My flesh is meat indeed. This bread is taken, but truly is not consumed; it is eaten, but is not transformed, because it is in no way transformed into the eater, but if it is received worthily, he who receives it is conformed to it. O most excellent Sacrament, O to be adored, venerated, honored, glorified, to be magnified with the highest praises, to be exalted with worthy proclamations, to be honored with all zeal, to be followed with devout obedience and retained in sincere hearts! O most noble memorial to be commended to the innermost affections, to be firmly bound to the mind, to be carefully preserved in the womb of the heart, and to be reviewed with diligent meditation and celebration! We ought to celebrate the continuous memory of this memorial, so that we may always be mindful of Him whose memorial we know this to be, because the gift or benefit which is more frequently beheld, the memory of it is more strictly retained.
6 § 1. Although this memorial Sacrament is frequently celebrated in the daily solemnities of Masses, we nevertheless judge it fitting and worthy that a more solemn and more celebrated memory of it be held at least once in the year, to confound especially the perfidy and madness of heretics. For on the day of the Lord's Supper, on which day Christ himself instituted this Sacrament, the universal Church, occupied with the pious reconciliation of penitents, the sacred consecration of Chrism, the fulfillment of the commandment concerning the washing of feet, and very many other things, cannot be fully free for the celebration of this greatest Sacrament. The Church herself observes this practice concerning the saints, whom we venerate throughout the course of the year, so that although we frequently renew their memory in litanies and Masses and in other ways, nevertheless she more solemnly commemorates their birthdays on certain days throughout the year, celebrating special feasts on those same days for this reason. And because in these feasts, concerning the solemnity due, something is omitted through negligence or occupation with family matters, or otherwise, from human frailty, the Church herself, our mother, has established a certain day, on which the commemoration of all Saints would be made generally, so that in this common celebration of them, whatever was omitted in their own festivities might be made up. Therefore, this vivifying Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, who is the glory and crown of all Saints, is to be carried out with the greatest care, so that it may shine forth with special festivity and celebration, in order that in that which in other Mass offices concerning solemnity may perhaps have been passed over, devoted diligence may supply it, and the faithful, with this festivity approaching, remembering within themselves what has passed, that which in these Mass solemnities of the world they may perhaps have done implicitly, or otherwise from negligence or human frailty have done less fully, may then carefully restore in humility of spirit and purity of soul. We have understood, moreover, when we were placed in a lesser office, that this feast had been divinely revealed to certain Catholics to be celebrated generally in the Church.
7 § 2. We therefore, for the corroboration and exaltation of the Catholic faith, have deemed it fitting and reasonable to establish that after the octave of so great a Sacrament, besides the daily commemoration which the Church makes of it, a more solemn and special annual memory be celebrated, designating and describing a certain day for this purpose, namely the Thursday following the octave of Pentecost, so that on that Thursday the devout crowds of the faithful may resort affectionately to the Churches for this reason, and both clergy and people, rejoicing, may rise in songs of praise. Then indeed let all hearts and vows, mouths and lips, resound hymns of joyful salvation; then let faith sing; let hope exult; let charity rejoice; let devotion applaud; let the choir jubilate; let purity be glad. Then let each one, with eager spirit and willing heart, come together worthily to carry out their duties, celebrating the solemnity of so great a feast. And would that the ardor of his faithful for the service of Christ might be so inflamed through these and other things, that through these, advancing in the accumulation of merits with him who gave himself as a price for them and gave himself to them as food, at length after the course of this life he might grant himself to them as a reward.
8 § 5. Wherefore we admonish and exhort your universality in the Lord, and by these apostolic writings in the virtue of holy obedience strictly commanding and enjoining, in the remission of sins, that you celebrate so exalted and so glorious a feast, on the aforesaid Thursday each year, devoutly and solemnly, and cause it to be celebrated studiously throughout all the churches of your cities and dioceses; exhorting your subjects solicitously through yourselves and through others on the Sunday preceding the said Thursday, with salutary admonitions, that through true and pure confession, the giving of alms, attentive and diligent

11 § 4. For we, wishing to animate the Christian faithful to honor and celebrate so great a feast with spiritual gifts, to all truly penitent and confessed, who shall have attended the matins office of the same feast in the church in which it shall be celebrated, one hundred days; and to those who shall have attended the Mass, the same number; and to those who shall have attended the first Vespers of the same feast, likewise one hundred days; and to those who shall have attended the second, the same number; and to those who shall have attended the offices of Prime, Terce, Sext, None, and Compline, for each of those hours, forty days; and to those who shall have attended the matins, Vespers, Mass, and the aforesaid hours offices throughout the octave of that feast, one hundred days on each of the days of that octave, trusting in the mercy of almighty God and the authority of his blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, we remit from the penances enjoined upon them.
