CASTELLESI, ADRIANO. - Cardinal, also called A. da Corneto after the town where he was born around 1458-59. He died in December 1521.
He went to Rome, where he managed to make a name for himself; he entered the court of Innocent VIII first as squire and notary of the Camera, then as an ecclesiastic. Entrusted with a mission to Scotland, he had to stop in England, where he enjoyed the favor of Henry VII (1488). In 1490 he returned to that kingdom as collector; in 1493 Alexander VI confirmed him there as nuncio, and C. was able to accumulate great wealth there. In 1494 he was back in Rome as cleric of the Camera; in 1497 he was secret secretary and protonotary; in 1498 he was sent to France; on 27 September 1500 he was appointed treasurer general; on 14 February 1502 he received the bishopric of Hereford; finally, on 31 May 1503 Alexander VI created him cardinal of S. Crisogono.
Under Julius II the fortunes of C. were quite different. In any case, on 2 August 1504 he moved from Hereford to the far richer bishopric of Bath and Wells. In 1506 he accompanied the Pope on the journey toward Bologna. But in 1507, having fallen out with Julius II, he fled from Rome, took refuge in Venice and from there in the Trentino (1509).
He was among the adherents of the conspiracy of Cardinal Petrucci (1517) against Pope Leo X, out of the ambition to obtain the tiara that a prophecy had foretold to him. The Pope punished him with a fine of 25,000 ducats; yet he did not feel safe, and took refuge once more in Venice (July 1517), nor would he return despite the fullest guarantees offered to him.
In England, Cardinal Wolsey, archbishop of York and chancellor, had for some time been intriguing against him and urging the Pope to pronounce an exemplary condemnation. Leo X, after having summoned him in vain to return, on 5 July 1518 deposed him from all ecclesiastical dignities and confiscated all his goods.
On the death of Leo X, C. set out for Rome to take part in the Conclave, but during this journey he disappeared without leaving a trace of himself.
