1And the lot of the sons of Joseph fell from the Jordan over against Jericho and the waters thereof, on the east: the wilderness which goeth up from Jericho to the mountain of Bethel:La porzione poi che toccò in sorte a' figliuoli di Giuseppe fu dal Giordano che è dirimpetto a Gerico, e dalle acque della stessa Gerico, a levante fino al deserto che va da Gerico al monte Bethel:THE lotte also of the children of Ioseph fel from Iordan against Iericho and the Waters therof, on the east: the wildernes which goeth vp from Iericho to the mountaine of Bethel:Cecidit quoque sors filiorum Joseph ab Jordane contra Jericho et aquas ejus ab oriente: solitudo quæ ascendit de Jericho ad montem Bethel: 2And goeth out from Bethel to Luza: and passeth the border of Archi, to Ataroth,E partendo da Bethel a Luza passa lungo i confini di Archi ad Atharoth:and goeth out from Bethel to Luza: and passeth the border of Archia, to Atharoth.et egreditur de Bethel Luza: transitque terminum Archi, Ataroth: 3And goeth down westward, by the border of Jephleti, unto the borders of Beth-horon the nether, and to Gazer: and the countries of it are ended by the great sea:E va verso occidente lungo i confini di Jephlet, fino ai confini di Beth-horon la inferiore, e di Gazer: e la sua regione finisce al mar grande:And descendeth Westward, by the border of Iephleti, vnto the borders of Beth horon the lower, and to Gazer: and their countries are ended by the great sea:et descendit ad occidentem juxta terminum Jephleti, usque ad terminos Beth-horon inferioris, et Gazer: finiunturque regiones ejus mari magno: 4And Manasses and Ephraim the children of Joseph possessed it.E la possederono i figliuoli di Giuseppe, Manasse ed Ephraim.and Manasses and Ephraim the children of Ioseph possessed it.possederuntque filii Joseph, Manasses et Ephraim. 5And the border of the children of Ephraim was according to their kindreds: and their possession towards the east was Ataroth-addar unto Beth-horon the upper.E la porzione dei figliuoli di Ephraim divisi nelle loro famiglie, e la regione che possedettero verso oriente di Atharoth-Addar sino a Beth-horon la superiore. And the border of the children of Ephraim was made according to their kinredes: and their possession toward the East was Ataroth addar vnto Beth-horon the higher.Et factus est terminus filiorum Ephraim per cognationes suas: et possessio eorum contra orientem Ataroth Addar usque Beth-horon superiorem. 6And the confines go out unto the sea: but Machmethath looketh to the north, and it goeth round the borders eastward into Thanath-selo: and passeth along on the east side to Janoe.E i suoi confini vanno al mare. Machmethath guarda a settentrione, e i confini girano verso levante a Thanathselo, e passano all'oriente di Janoe:And the confines goe out vnto the sea: but Machmethath looketh to the North, and it compasseth the borders against the East into Thanath-selo: and passeth through on the East side to Ianoe.Egrediunturque confinia in mare: Machmethath vero aquilonem respicit, et circuit terminos contra orientem in Thanathselo: et pertransit ab oriente Janoë.
7And it goeth down from Janoe into Ataroth and Naaratha: and it cometh to Jericho, and goeth out to the Jordan.E da Janoe scendono fino ad Atharoth, e a Naaratha: arrivano a Gerico, e finiscono al Giordano.and it goeth downe from Ianoe into Ataroth & Naaratha: and it cometh into lericho, and goeth our to Iordan.Descenditque de Janoë in Ataroth et Naaratha: et pervenit in Jericho, egrediturque ad Jordanem. 8From Taphua it passeth on towards the sea into the valley of reeds, and the goings out thereof are at the most salt sea. This is the possession of the tribe of the children of Ephraim by their families.Da Taphua vanno verso il mare alla valle del canneto, e finiscono al mare salato. Questa è la porzione posseduta dalla tribù de' figliuoli di Ephraim famiglia per famiglia. From Taphua it passeth through against the sea into the Valley of reedes, and the issues therof are into the most salt sea. this is the possession of the tribe of the children of Ephraim by their families.De Taphua pertransit contra mare in vallem arundineti, suntque egressus ejus in mare salsissimum. Hæc est possessio tribus filiorum Ephraim per familias suas. 9And there were cities with their villages separated for the children of Ephraim in the midst of the possession of the children of Manasses.E furono assegnate a' figliuoli di Ephraim delle città co' loro villaggi, le quali erano dentro la linea della porzione di Manasse. And cities with their villages were separated to the children of Ephraim in the middes of the possession of the children of Manasses,Urbesque separatæ sunt filiis Ephraim in medio possessionis filiorum Manasse, et villæ earum. 10And the children of Ephraim slew not the Chanaanite, who dwelt in Gazer: and the Chanaanite dwelt in the midst of Ephraim until this day, paying tribute.Ma i figliuoli di Ephraim non distrusseso i Cananei che abitavano in Gazer: e i Cananei son rimasi fino al di d'oggi in mezzo ad Ephraim suoi tributarii.and the children of Ephraim slew not the Chananeite, which dwelt in Gazer: and the Chananeite dwelt in the middes of Ephraim vntil this dav tributarie.Et non interfecerunt filii Ephraim Chananæum, qui habitabat in Gazer: habitavitque Chananæus in medio Ephraim usque in diem hanc tributarius.

Worthington
Joseph. The double portion is given to him, as Ruben forfeited his birth-right. (Chaldean) (Worthington)
Waters; or the celebrated fountain, which renders the territory so fruitful, and which was made sweet, by Eliseus casting salt into it, 4 Kings 2:19.
Masius
Which, is not to be referred to wilderness, but to the word lot. (Masius; Menochius)
16:2
To Luza. The Vulgate reads Bethel Luza, which may be supposed to be two names, (chap. 18:13.; Haydock) for the same city. (Menochius) (Genesis 28:29.)
Bethel was probably the country, (Calmet) or mountain, (Haydock) to the east of Luza, on the frontiers of Benjamin and of Ephraim; for which reason it is sometimes attributed to both.
16:3
Calmet
Gazer was in the vicinity of Azotus, 1 Machabees 14:34., Josue 10:33. (Calmet)
16:4
Menochius
Possessed it, or divided the country between them. The territories of Ephraim are henceforward described, to the end of the chapter. (Menochius)
16:6
Challoner
Looketh to the north, etc. The meaning is, that the border went towards the north, by Machmethath; and then turned eastward to Thanathselo. (Challoner)
Bonfrere
Borders. It should be terminus. "The border turneth eastward," Septuagint. (Bonfrere)
Janoe, twelve miles east of Sichem. (Eusebius) (4 Kings 15:29.)
16:8
Calmet
Reeds. Septuagint, "of Cana." The vale belonged to Manasses, but the cities were ceded to Ephraim, ver. 9., Josue 17:19. The limits of these two tribes are very confused. (Calmet)
Menochius
Most salt. This is the title generally applied to the lake of Sodom. But here the Mediterranean is meant, which, compared with many of the seas of Palestine, is certainly most salt. (Menochius)
Menochius
The epithet is not, however, found in Hebrew or Septuagint (Calmet) and Serarius thinks it has crept in here by mistake. (Menochius)
16:10
Gazer. It is not certain when the Ephraimites rendered this city tributary, or when it threw off the yoke. The king of Egypt afterwards conquered it, and gave it with his daughter to Solomon, Josue 10:33. (Calmet) See Judges 1:29.
Menochius
The negligence of Ephraim was contrary to God's order, Exodus xx. (Menochius)
Haydock
The Alexandrian Septuagint here inserts after day, "till Pharao, king of Egypt, went up and took the city, and burnt it with fire, and the Chanaanites and Pherezites, and the inhabitants of Gazer, he slew; and Pharao gave it as a dowry to his daughter." Grabe adds what seems deficient, "and they became tributary slaves." (Haydock)
16:6
Looketh to the north, etc.... The meaning is, that the border went towards the north, by Machmethath; and then turned eastward to Thanath-selo.

16:1
1. THE LOT OF THE SONS OF JOSEPH ALSO FELL, — namely Ephraim and Manasseh, who, as we have heard cap. xiv, verse 4, constituted two tribes. Already half the tribe of Manasseh had received its portion of its region from Moses on this side of the Jordan; there remained therefore the other half with the whole tribe of Ephraim, which here by Joshua receives its portion by lot across the Jordan, but so that the lot of Manasseh was near and adjacent to the lot of Ephraim. In this chapter therefore the lot of Ephraim is described, but in the following cap. the lot of half the tribe of Manasseh; to each was then lateral and adjacent the lot of the tribe of Benjamin. St. Jerome and Eusebius describe graphically the lots of individual tribes, cities, mountains and rivers in the Hebrew Places, Masius here and Arias in the Apparatus of Biblical Matters in the book of Kings, and Caleb exhibits the same in Geographical Tables to be viewed with the eye, although some things are wanting in them. Let the Reader consult them; for it would be thorny and laborious, and tedious and of little use to the Reader, if I should pursue these matters here by commentary.
16:8
8. INTO THE VALLEY OF REEDS. — Masius and others, into the torrent of reeds. For the valleys through which torrents and waters flow are fertile in reeds; for these are born in marshy and moist places. AND HIS GOINGS OUT ARE INTO THE MOST SALT SEA, — that is, into the sea which by its nature is salt. In Hebrew, sea of salt, which our translator is accustomed to render as most salt sea, signifies the Dead Sea, or the Lake of Asphaltum, as is evident from chapter xviii, verse 19; Numbers chapter xxxiv, verse 3, and elsewhere. But here it cannot be taken in that sense: for the tribe of Ephraim is far distant from it; wherefore here the Mediterranean Sea must be understood. Whence Serarius thinks the word "most salt" has crept in here; for it is lacking in the Hebrew, Chaldean and Greek texts, and our translator omits it in the following chapter, verse 9, where he assigns the sea (namely, the Mediterranean) as the boundary of the tribe of Manasseh, which was bordering on the tribe of Ephraim.
16:9
9. AND CITIES WERE SET APART FOR THE SONS OF EPHRAIM IN THE MIDST OF THE POSSESSION OF THE CHILDREN OF MANASSEH, AND THEIR VILLAGES (that is, towns or suburban villages, says Masius), — as if to say: Since the lot of cities which had fallen to the tribe of Ephraim was not sufficient for so great a multitude of Ephraimites, there were joined to them certain cities from the tribe of Manasseh, which was related and bordering to the tribe of Ephraim.
16:10
10. AND THE CANAANITE DWELT IN THE MIDST OF EPHRAIM UNTO THIS DAY TRIBUTARY. — This happened from the sloth of the Ephraimites; for God had commanded that the Canaanites be exterminated, and no covenant be made with them even under the agreement of tribute. Tropologically, St. Gregory, book IV of the Morals, chapter xxii: "What is the Canaanite," he says, "namely the gentile people, but a signification of vice? And often with great virtues we enter the promised land, because we are strengthened by intimate hope of eternity; but while we retain certain small vices amid sublime deeds, as it were we permit a Canaanite to dwell in our land. Yet he becomes tributary to us, because this very vice which we cannot subdue, we humbly turn to the use of our utility, so that the mind may feel itself vile in the highest things by the same measure by which it cannot overcome even small things which it desires by its own strength."
