Apostolic Constitution on the three Masses to be celebrated on All Souls' Day

Apostolic constitution of Pope Benedict XV ·

BENEDICT BISHOP SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD FOR PERPETUAL REMEMBRANCE OF THE MATTER
APOSTOLIC CONSTITUTION
INCRUENTUM ALTARIS*
CONCERNING THE SACRED RITE TO BE PERFORMED ON THE SOLEMN DAY OF COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED

1 The unbloody sacrifice of the Altar, inasmuch as it differs in no way by its very nature from the sacrifice of the Cross, has been the perpetual and constant doctrine of the holy Church, not only to bring glory to the heavenly powers and to serve as a remedy and salvation to those who are engaged in the miseries of this life, but also to avail very greatly for the expiation of the souls of the faithful who have rested in Christ. The traces and proofs of this doctrine, which indeed in the course of ages has brought the most excellent consolations to the whole body of Christians and has seized upon every good person with admiration of the infinite charity of Christ, can be found expressed and manifest in the most ancient liturgies of the Latin and Eastern Church, in the writings of the holy Fathers, and finally in the decrees of many ancient Synods. This same Ecumenical Council of Trent proposed the very thing to be believed by a more solemn definition, when it taught that "the souls detained in Purgatory are helped by the suffrages of the faithful, and most especially by the acceptable sacrifice of the Altar," and it struck with anathema those who would say that the sacred rite ought not to be celebrated "for the living and the dead, for sins, penalties, satisfactions and other necessities." Nor has the pious Mother Church ever followed a manner of acting dissimilar to this manner of teaching; for at no time has she ceased to exhort the faithful of Christ most earnestly, lest they suffer the souls of the departed to lack those benefits which flow most abundantly from the same sacrifice of the Mass. In this matter, however, this must be said to the praise of the Christian people, that their zeal and industry for the departed has never been wanting: and the history of the Church bears witness that when the virtues of faith and charity were more deeply rooted in souls, then both kings and peoples, wherever the Catholic name was known, applied themselves with more active effort to the relief of the souls in Purgatory.

2 This very thing indeed brought about such fervent piety in our ancestors, that many centuries ago, in the Kingdom of Aragon, a custom gradually introduced led priests of the secular clergy to celebrate the sacred rite twice on the Solemn Day of Commemoration of all the departed, and the regulars three times; which privilege Our Predecessor of immortal memory Benedict XIV not only confirmed for just causes, but also, at the request of Ferdinand VI, the Catholic King of Spain, and likewise of John V, King of Portugal, by Apostolic Letters given on the twenty-sixth day of the month of August in the year 1748, extended it in such a way as to grant to every priest from the regions subject to either Prince the faculty of celebrating three times on that same Solemn Commemoration.

3 As time proceeded, very many, both sacred Prelates and citizens of every rank, again and repeatedly made suppliant petitions to the Apostolic See, that such a privilege might be used everywhere among all nations: and the same matter was requested by Our recent Predecessors and by Ourselves, in the early days of Our Pontificate, not once. Nor would you say that the reasons which were formerly advanced for the proposal have now failed: rather they still exist and grow worse day by day. For it is to be lamented that the pious institutions and bequests of the Christian faithful, who have either arranged or left by testament Masses to be celebrated for the solace of the departed, have been partly destroyed and partly neglected by those who of all people ought least to do so. To this is added the fact that not a few of those whose proven piety is known are compelled by the diminution of revenues to reduce the number of Masses and to make suppliant petition to the Apostolic See.

4 We therefore, again laying a grave burden upon the conscience of those who do not satisfy their duty in this matter, are strongly impelled by charity toward the souls of the departed, with which we have been inflamed from childhood, to supply in some way, as far as in Us lies, the suffrages that have been omitted with great detriment to them. This compassion indeed moves Us today in a greater degree, since, with the torches of a most sorrowful war applied to almost all of Europe, We see before Our very eyes so great a multitude of men in the flower of age falling to an untimely death in battle; for the expiation of whose souls, although the piety of their relatives will not be lacking, who would say that such necessity lacks bread? Since therefore by divine counsel We have been made the common Father of all, We wish that the children bereft of life, most dear and most desired by Us, should abundantly share in the treasures gathered from the merits of Christ Jesus with paternal generosity.

5 Accordingly, invoking the light of heavenly Wisdom and having heard certain Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church from the Sacred Congregations of the Discipline of the Sacraments and of Sacred Rites, We establish the following in perpetuity.

6 I. It shall be permitted to all priests in the universal Church, on the day on which the Solemn Commemoration of all the faithful departed is celebrated, to celebrate the sacred rite three times; provided, however, that one of the three Masses may be applied to whomever they wish and a stipend received; but they are bound, without receiving any stipend, to apply the second Mass for the suffrage of all the faithful departed, and the third to the intention of the Supreme Pontiff, which We have sufficiently and more than sufficiently made clear.

7 II. That which Our Predecessor Clement XIII granted by Letters given on the nineteenth day of the month of May in the year 1761, namely that all altars should be privileged on that very day of the Solemn Commemoration, We, insofar as it is necessary, confirm by Our authority.

8 III. The three Masses, of which We spoke above, shall be read in the manner which Our Predecessor Benedict XIV, of happy memory, prescribed for the Kingdoms of Spain and Portugal.

9 Whoever wishes to celebrate only one Mass shall read that which is inscribed in the Missal to be read in Commemoration of all the faithful departed; let the same be used by one who is about to celebrate Mass with singing, with power granted to anticipate the second and third.

10 IV. Wherever it should happen that the Most August Sacrament is exposed for the Prayer of Forty Hours, the Masses for the Dead, which must necessarily be said with priestly vestments of violet color (Decr. Gen. S. R. C. 3177-3864 ad 4), shall be celebrated at the Altar of Exposition.

11 As for the rest, We are confident that it will come to pass that all Catholic priests throughout the world, although it will be permitted to them to offer sacrifice only once on the day of the Solemn Commemoration of all the faithful departed, will willingly and eagerly wish to use the distinguished privilege which We have granted. We earnestly exhort all the children of the Church that, mindful of the duty by which they are bound on more than one account toward the brethren tormented by the fire of Purgatory, they attend the sacred rites on that day with the greatest reverence. Thus it will surely come to pass that, with an immense wave of refreshment flowing from so many salutary expiations into Purgatory, very many souls of the departed each year will be happily admitted among the blessed citizens of the triumphant Church in heaven.

12 We decree that those things which We have established by these Apostolic Letters shall be valid and firm in perpetuity, notwithstanding any law previously enacted by Our Predecessors concerning the non-repetition of Masses.

13 Given at Rome at St. Peter's on the tenth day of the month of August in the year 1915, in the first year of Our Pontificate.

BENEDICTUS EPISCOPUS SERVUS SERVORUM DEI AD PERPETUAM REI MEMORIAM
CONSTITUTIO APOSTOLICA
INCRUENTUM ALTARIS*

7 II. Quod Decessor Noster Clemens XIII Litteris die XIX mensis Maii a. MDCCLXI datis concessit, id est ut omnia altaria essent eo ipso Sollemnis Commemorationis die privilegiata, id, quatenus opus sit, auctoritate Nostra confirmamus.

8 III.

13 Datum Romae apud Sanctum Petrum die X mensis Augusti anno MCMXV, Pontificatus Nostri primo.

IL VESCOVO BENEDETTO, SERVO DEI SERVI DI DIO.A PERPETUA MEMORIA
BOLLA
INCRUENTUM ALTARIS

14 BENEDICTUS PP. XV
