Granting Indulgences to the Confraternity of Our Lady of a Good Death

Apostolic letter of Pope Benedict XV ·

INDULGENCES GRANTED IN FULL FOR THE PLAGUE, HOLY AND PAR- BENEDICT PP. XV

1 To perpetual memory of the matter. — Among the confraternities, which of the Blessed Mary

2 promote the cult of the Virgin and likewise the spiritual welfare of the Christian faithful, the Confraternity under the title of Our Lady of a Good Death, founded not long ago by the Priests of St. Mary (of Tinchebray), holds a most honourable place, if you consider the purpose by which it is moved and how widely throughout the world, with the greatest abundance of fruits, it has been propagated to this day. For those who are enrolled in it propose to themselves from its institute and laws of the society that they venerate the Virgin of Sorrows and take care that she be venerated by all, and thus present to God the merits of the prayers and sorrows of that same Virgin, standing at the Cross of Jesus, and trust in them, that they may obtain for themselves or others the grace of perseverance in Christian faith and morals or return to good conduct, and especially a holy death in the kiss of Christ, on which eternal beatitude depends. But that the Virgin of Sorrows is chosen and invoked as the Patroness of a good death, this both wonderfully corresponds to Catholic doctrine and to the pious sense of the Church, and rests upon hope rightly and happily placed. For the Doctors of the Church commonly teach that the Blessed Virgin Mary, who seemed to be absent from the public life of Jesus Christ, if she was present to Him suffering death and fixed to the Cross, was not present without divine counsel. Namely, thus she suffered with her Son and exhorted and almost died with Him, thus she renounced her maternal rights over her Son for the salvation of men and, to appease the justice of God, as far as it pertained to her, she offered up her Son, so that it can be said with justice that she herself redeemed the human race with Christ. But if for this very reason, the graces which all mankind receives from the treasure of Redemption are administered as it were from the hands of that Virgin of Sorrows, no one fails to see that a holy death of men is to be expected from her, since by this principal gift the work of Redemption is accomplished in each man in an effective and perpetual manner. It is likewise clear that the Virgin of Sorrows, inasmuch as she, constituted by Jesus Christ the Mother of all men, received them as left to her by a testament of infinite charity and fulfils the office of protecting their spiritual life with maternal kindness, cannot but help her most dear sons by adoption more earnestly at that moment of time when their salvation and sanctity are being confirmed for eternity. Wherefore the Church herself by many liturgical prayers begs of the Blessed Virgin Mary that she be merciful to men struggling at the approach of death; and the most constant opinion among the Christian faithful, proved by long experience, is that as many as use that same Virgin as their Patroness will not perish eternally. Nor therefore is it to be wondered at if the Confraternity of Our Lady of a Good Death, which we have mentioned, has already five hundred thousand of the faithful, of both sexes and of every order of citizens, enrolled in it, since the same appears so opportune and suited to the times; for it is to be lamented that too many today of the children of the Church, to pass over those who have cast off the faith or altogether neglect Christian duties, are so entangled in the affairs and fleeting empty pleasures of the world that they do not even take care from the most salutary meditation on death or deliberately strive to turn their mind and heart away from it. Such a Confraternity, therefore, which one might rightly say pursues the apostolate of a good death, has been not only strongly approved by many Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church and Bishops of the Catholic world, but also was embraced by our predecessor of happy memory Pius X with singular benevolence and enriched with an abundance of graces; nor do we ourselves regard it as of less importance than that same Pontiff held it, nor are we less prepared in mind to support generously that most provident work. Of which indeed will of ours, shortly after we undertook the Pontificate by the merciful counsel of God, we gave clear testimony in Letters written to our beloved son the General Moderator of the Congregation of Priests of St. Mary, and another equally clear we shall soon issue, led by good and certain hope that those same Priests of St. Mary, to whom the apostolate of a good death has been entrusted auspiciously, will so discharge their duty, as their peculiar and proper one, that, with Bishops, curates and zealots, as they are called, aiding in the matter, they may promote the Confraternity more widely throughout the whole circle of the earth and obtain from the August Patroness a precious death in the sight of the Lord for very many of the faithful. Since therefore our beloved son Henry Rondet, General Procurator of the same Congregation, has made supplicant prayers to us, that we would wish to add certain other indulgences to those granted to our Confraternity of Our Lady of a Good Death by our predecessor of recent memory, by apostolic benignity, we have judged that we should comply with such pious wishes, on account of our devotion to the Virgin of Sorrows and our inclination toward a work so fruitful. Therefore, trusting in the mercy of almighty God and the authority of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, having heard our beloved son the Cardinal Major Penitentiary, to all and each of the faithful of the same Confraternity of Our Lady of a Good Death, both enrolled and to be enrolled in the future, who, having made a proper confession and been refreshed by the sacred Synaxis, on the feast days of Our Lady of the Dying, that is on the eleventh day of May, the Apparition of St. Michael the Archangel, that is on the eighth day of the same month, the Dedication of St. Michael the Archangel, that is on the twenty-ninth day of September, from the afternoon of the preceding day until the middle of the night of those same feast days, shall have visited any church or any public oratory, and there shall have poured forth pious prayers to God for the concord of Christian princes, the extirpation of heresies, the conversion of sinners and the exaltation of Holy Mother Church, on which day they shall have last completed the prescribed work, we grant a plenary indulgence and remission of all their sins in the Lord. But if those same members of the confraternity have not been able to confess and be refreshed by the heavenly banquet, to them, in place of a plenary indulgence, we mercifully grant in the Lord an indulgence of seven years and as many quarantines, provided that, as above, they visit any temple or public oratory during those days and pour forth prayers to the mind of the Supreme Pontiff. Furthermore, by the same authority of ours, to all and each of the faithful, although not enrolled in the Confraternity, on each of seven consecutive Fridays preceding either feast day of the Virgin of Sorrows, if they have confessed and been refreshed by the sacred Synaxis and have recited seven times the Pater, Ave, Gloria, a plenary indulgence; as often as they shall have completed a nine-day pious exercise, in which, to obtain the grace of a holy death, is recited daily the little prayer Remember, O Virgin, according to the example of these our Letters subjoined and to be preserved in the archive of the Chancery of Apostolic Briefs, provided they have duly expiated their admissions and refreshed themselves with heavenly food, likewise a plenary indulgence; under this same last condition, once a month, if they shall have recited daily the Hymn Hail, Mother of Sorrows, likewise attached to these our Letters and to be kept in the archive which we have mentioned, likewise, on which day they shall have last completed the enjoined work, we grant and bestow a plenary indulgence and remission of all their sins. To these things, to all and each of the faithful, although they be not of the Confraternity, on each of the Fridays mentioned above, if they shall have recited seven times the Pater, Ave, Gloria, seven years and as many quarantines; for each day of the aforesaid nine-day exercise, three hundred days; as often as they recite the aforesaid Hymn, likewise three hundred days from the number of penal days, in the form customary in the Church, we remit. Moreover we will that to all the same members of the confraternity and Christian faithful it be permitted to expiate by plenary and partial indulgences, which we have granted, the stains and penalties of the dead. Decreeing that these present Letters remain firm, valid and effective always and forever, and produce and obtain their full and complete effects, and most fully suffice in all things and through all things for those to whom they pertain or may pertain, and thus in the premises be defined and judged, and that it shall be null and void if otherwise in these matters by anyone, of whatever authority, knowingly or unknowingly should be attempted. These present to be valid forever. Notwithstanding any contrary provisions whatsoever.

3 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, under the Fisherman's Ring, on the 22nd day of the month of March, the feast of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in the year 1918, the fourth year of Our Pontificate.

INDULGENTIAE AD PLENARIAE PESTIS, SANCTAM AC PAR- BENEDICTUS PP. XV
