PIO PP.
8 Bolla Mirabilis Deus, d. d. xi aprilis an.
9 Leonis XIII Epist. Qui te, d. d. xix iunii an. MDCCCLXXXVI.

PIUS PP. x MOTU PROPRIO PRO ITALIA ET INSULIS ADIACENTIBUS DE STUDIO DOCTRINAE S. THOMAE AQUINATIS IN SCHOLIS CATHOLICIS PRO- MOVENDO
At eos multum animus fefellit.
MCGGXVIII.
8 Bulla Mirabilis Deus, d. d. xi aprilis an.
9 Leonis XIII Epist. Qui te, d. d. xix iunii an. MDCCCLXXXVI. Quare nulla in posterum tribuetur cuiquam Instituto potestas conferendi academicos in sacra theologia gradus, nisi quod hic a Nobis praescriptum est, sancte apud ipsum servetur. Instituta vero seu Facultates, Ordinum quoque et Congregationum Regularium, quae legitime iam huiusmodi potestatem habeant academicos in theologia gradus aut similia documenta conferendi vel tantum intra domesticos fines, eadem privabuntur privataeque habendae erunt, si post tres annos, quavis de causa etiamsi minime voluntaria, huic praescriptioni Nostrae religiose non obtemperarint.

POPE PIUS X MOTU PROPRIO FOR ITALY AND ADJACENT ISLANDS ON PROMOTING THE STUDY OF THE DOCTRINE OF ST. THOMAS AQUINAS IN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
1 No sincere Catholic would dare to call into question the opinion of the Angelic Doctor: To ordain concerning studies pertains chiefly to the authority of the Apostolic See by which the universal Church is governed, and by general study provision is made for it. Which office and duty We have fulfilled at other times, and especially on the 1st of September in the year 1910, when by letters sent to the Sacred Prelates and to all Bishops and to the supreme Masters of Religious Orders, to whom the care of properly instructing sacred youth pertains, We admonished them in these matters first: "Concerning studies, We will and strictly command that scholastic philosophy be placed as the foundation of sacred studies... Which is the chief point, scholastic philosophy which We prescribe to be followed, We understand this especially to be that which has been handed down by St. Thomas Aquinas: and whatever was sanctioned by Our Predecessor concerning it, We will all of it to remain in force and, where it is necessary, We restore and confirm it, and strictly command it to be observed by all. It shall be the duty of Bishops, wherever these things have been neglected in Seminaries, to urge and require that they be observed henceforth. We impose the same command upon the Moderators of Religious Orders."
2 Now indeed, since We said in this place that the philosophy of Aquinas was chiefly to be followed, not exclusively, some have persuaded themselves that they obey Our will or certainly do not resist it, if they hold as promiscuously to be followed whatever any one of the scholastic Doctors had handed down in philosophy, even though it be repugnant to the principles of St. Thomas. But their mind has greatly deceived them. It is clear that, when We gave Thomas as the chief guide of scholastic philosophy to Our schools, We wished this to be understood especially of his principles, upon which, as upon foundations, it itself rests. For just as that opinion of certain ancients must be rejected, that it matters nothing for the truth of Faith what anyone thinks about created things, provided he thinks rightly about God, since error concerning the nature of things produces false knowledge of God; so must the principles of philosophy laid down by Aquinas be kept holy and inviolate, by which both such knowledge of created things is obtained as agrees most aptly with Faith; and all errors of all ages are refuted; and it is permitted to discern with certainty what belongs to God alone and is to be attributed to no one besides Him; and there is wonderfully illustrated both the diversity and the analogy which exists between God and His works; which diversity and analogy the Fourth Lateran Council expressed thus: "between the Creator and creature there cannot be noted so great a likeness that a greater unlikeness is not to be noted between them." Moreover, in these principles of Thomas, if we speak of them generally and universally, nothing is contained except what the most noble philosophers and chief Doctors of the Church had discovered by meditation and reasoning concerning the proper grounds of human knowledge, concerning the nature of God and all other things, concerning the moral order and the attainment of the ultimate end of life. Such a splendid abundance of wisdom, which he received from his predecessors and polished and increased by his almost angelic faculty of mind and applied to preparing, illustrating, defending and preserving sacred doctrine in human minds, neither sound reason wishes to be neglected nor Religion permits to be diminished in any part. All the more so because if Catholic truth were once deprived of this strong protection, in vain would anyone seek aid from that philosophy for defending it.
3 Decretals II We condemn therefore, etc. Cfr. S. Thom. Quaest. Disp. De scientia Dei, art. 11.
4 In the Second Question, Third Article of the Commentary on Boethius's De Trinitate, a philosophy whose principles are either common with or certainly do not conflict with the errors of Materialism, Monism, Pantheism, Socialism and both forms of Modernism. For those matters which are the principal doctrines in the philosophy of St. Thomas ought not to be held in the category of opinions about which it is permitted to dispute on either side, but rather as foundations upon which all knowledge of natural and divine things rests: which, if removed or corrupted in any way whatsoever, it necessarily follows that students of sacred disciplines do not even perceive the meaning of the words by which divinely revealed dogmas are proposed by the teaching authority of the Church. Therefore, We have already wished to admonish all who undertake to teach philosophy and sacred theology, that if they depart from Aquinas in any respect, especially in metaphysics, it will not be without great detriment. Now, however, We further decree this: not only is it not to follow Thomas, but to depart very far from the holy Doctor, those who perversely interpret or utterly despise those matters which are the principal doctrines and greater pronouncements in his philosophy. For if the doctrine of any author or Saint Doctor has ever been approved by Us or Our Predecessors with singular praises and in such a way that exhortation and command were added to the praises for its dissemination and defense, it is easily understood to have been approved to the extent that it cohered with the principles of Aquinas or in no way conflicted with them.
5 We have deemed it our apostolic duty to declare and prescribe this, so that in a matter of the greatest importance, all who are of either clergy, secular and regular, may have Our mind and will fully understood, and may accomplish it with the diligence and eagerness that is fitting. This, moreover, the teachers of Christian philosophy and sacred theology will accomplish with particular care, who indeed ought to remember well that power to teach has been given to them not in order that they might communicate their own opinions with the students of their discipline, but that they might impart to them the most approved doctrines of the Church.
6 Now, as regards sacred theology properly, We wish that the study of this discipline always be illuminated by that light of philosophy which We have mentioned, but in the common Seminaries of clergy, provided suitable teachers are present, it may be permitted to use the books of those authors who, deriving doctrines from the fountain of Aquinas, set them forth in summary form; books of this kind are available and quite suitable.
7 But truly, for the deeper cultivation of this discipline, as it ought to be cultivated in Universities of studies and great Academies and also in all those Seminaries and Institutes to which power has been given to confer academic degrees, it is altogether necessary, with the ancient custom recalled, which ought never to have fallen away, that schools be held on the Summa Theologica itself: also because, by commenting on this book, it will be easier to understand and illustrate the solemn decrees and acts of the Church teaching, which were subsequently issued. For after the blessed death of the holy Doctor, no Council was held by the Church in which he did not participate with the resources of his doctrine. For by the experience of so many centuries it is known and appears more each day, how truly Our Predecessor John XXII affirmed: "He (Thomas) illuminated the Church more than all other Doctors: in whose books a man makes more progress in one year than in the teaching of others throughout the whole time of his life."1 Which judgment St. Pius V confirmed when he introduced the feast of St. Thomas as a Doctor to be celebrated throughout the Church, in these words: "But because by the providence of almighty God it came to pass that the Angelic Doctor, by the force and truth of his doctrine from the time when he was enrolled among the citizens of heaven, many heresies which afterwards arose were confounded and convicted and dispersed, which both before often and clearly recently appeared in the sacred decrees of the Council of Trent, We have determined that his memory, by whose merits the whole world is daily freed from pestilential errors, is to be honored with even greater affection of grateful and pious mind than before."2 And, to pass over other praises of Our Predecessors, many indeed and illustrious, it pleases Us to cite these words of Benedict XIV, Address delivered in Consistory in the year 1748.
8 Bull Mirabilis Deus, dated 11 April in the year 1567, embraces all the praises of the writings of Thomas, especially of the Summa Theologiae: "Whose doctrine several Roman Pontiffs, Our predecessors, gave most honorable testimony, as We ourselves in the books which We have written on various subjects, after diligently examining and perceiving the opinion of the Angelic Doctor and holding it in reverence, have always with admiration and willingly adhered to and subscribed to the same; openly professing that if anything good is found in those same books, it is in no way to be ascribed to Us, but entirely to so great a Teacher." Therefore, "in order that the genuine and integral doctrine of St. Thomas may flourish in the schools, which is most dear to Our heart," and in order to remove that "method of teaching which rests on the authority and arbitrary judgment of individual masters" and on that account "has a changeable foundation, from which often diverse opinions and those conflicting with one another arise ... not without great detriment to Christian learning," We will, command, and prescribe that those who hold the office of teaching sacred theology in Universities, great Lyceums, Colleges, Seminaries, Institutes, which have by apostolic indult the power to confer academic degrees and the laurea in the same discipline, shall have the Summa Theologiae of St. Thomas as the text of their lectures, and shall explain it in the Latin language; and in this they shall take diligent care that their hearers are most excellently disposed toward it. This has already been laudably practiced in several Institutes; the wisest founders of Religious Orders desired this same thing to be done in their houses of study, with the strong approval indeed of Our Predecessors; nor did the holy men who lived after the time of Aquinas have any other supreme master of doctrine for themselves except Thomas. Thus, and in no other way, will it come to pass that theology is not only recalled to its former glory, but also that all sacred disciplines receive their proper order and their proper weight, and whatever is held by understanding and reason will in some way revive.
9 Letter Qui te of Leo XIII, dated 19 June in the year 1886. Wherefore no power shall henceforth be granted to any Institute to confer academic degrees in sacred theology unless what is here prescribed by Us is religiously observed by the same. But Institutes or Faculties, also of Regular Orders and Congregations, which legitimately already possess such power to confer academic degrees in theology or similar documents, whether only within their own domestic limits, shall be deprived of the same and shall be held as deprived, if after three years, for whatever reason, even if in no way voluntary, they do not religiously obey this prescription of Ours.
