Canonizzazione di san Domenico

Bolla di papa Gregorio IX ·

festa solenne il 5 agosto. — 6.

5 § 3. Infatti tra le opere della santità e i segni mirabili della virtù, con i quali posto nella carne risplendette, guarendo diversi da languori, restituendo la favella ai muti, la vista ai ciechi, l'udito ai sordi, il movimento ai paralitici e la pristina sanità a molti generi di infermità, apertamente si manifestò quale spirito abitasse nella gleba santissima del suo corpo. Poiché dunque dalla molta familiarità, che con noi ebbe mentre costituito in minore ufficio, gli argomenti della sua santità da insigne testimonianza di vita risultassero certi, e fosse poi della verità dei miracoli detti fattaci piena fede per mezzo di testimoni idonei;

Note

solemn feast on 5 August. — 6. Indulgence granted to those visiting his tomb.

1 Gregory, bishop, servant of the servants of God, to his venerable brothers the archbishops, bishops, and beloved sons the abbots, priors, archdeacons, archpriests, deans, and other prelates of churches, to whom these letters shall come, greeting and apostolic benediction.

2 The Word of the Father, the fountain of wisdom, the Lord Jesus Christ, whose nature is goodness, whose work is mercy, redeeming and renewing those whom He created: who did not abandon the vineyard which He brought forth from Egypt until the consummation of the age, wisely renewing signs on account of unstable minds, and changing wonders against the unbelief of incredulity: when in the beginning of the nascent Church after the death of Moses, that is, the end of the law, about to ascend horses and in the Gospels' chariots, which are truly health, with the bow of sacred eloquy, which He had drawn as long as the Jew was infirm, and with the oaths which He had disposed in our fathers, raising up confidence, the glory of the world, which He had conquered by the din of preaching, astounding the nations, He would make a way for His horses in the sea, and in Rahab figure forth the salvation of the breadth of the nations with the sign of scarlet. In the first of the four chariots going forth, in Zechariah, from between two brazen mountains, He brought forth red horses, princes of peoples, strong ones of the earth, made martyrs, that is, witnesses, who with the voice of confession would subscribe to the book of the new law. And on the outside, with signs of miracles affixed to the strength of covenants, they would dip the book and the tabernacle, which God, and not man, fixed, and the vessels of evangelical ministry, not with the blood of brute beasts, but of rational victims. And over the whole face of the espoused sea with the net of preaching spread out, multiplied beyond number, from all nations which are under heaven, they would gather the Church.

3 § 1. But because presumption of the multitude followed upon salvation and malice upon liberty, He appointed for His saints a second chariot under the colour which befits penitents and the nations, an equestrian wedge, which, led to the cloister of the desert by the spirit under the most holy Benedict, the auriga of the new Israel, as under another Elisha, the common good of the life of the sons of the prophets, lost by occasion of the multitude, He restored in the grateful society of pleasant cohabitation. And thus mending the net of unity that was torn, and proceeding through works of piety to the land of the North, whence all evil goes forth, He made him rest in the treasures of snow and in a contrite heart, he who disdains to dwell in a body subject to the sins of the flesh. After whom, as if to renew a weary army and to restore jubilation after lamentation, applying horses white to the third chariot, the brothers of the Cistercian order and of Florence, like shorn flocks made fertile with the offspring of twofold charity from the washing of penance, He made to ascend, with St. Bernard as the ram of the sheep in the virtue of the spirit, by which, endued from on high, he went forth, and in the abundance of the grain of the Valleys going before, so that those passing through him might cry out to the Lord in strength, saying a hymn, and pitch the camps of God's army over the sea.

4 § 2. Therefore, when the New Israel, with these tribes, namely the children of the Lord, with squadrons equal in number to those which the Philistines had made, meeting at the eleventh hour, when the day was already declining toward evening, and on account of the abundance of iniquity, with charity growing exceedingly cold, the ray of justice was turning toward its setting, because the vineyard, to which the father of the household had hired workers at different times by agreement for denarii, and which his right hand had planted, had not only been invaded by the thorns and briars of vices, but already the little foxes, destroying it, were striving to turn it into the bitterness of alien worthlessness, he wished to gather a more ready army against the most hostile multitude. And just as we now see, after the training of three different signs of chariots, in the fourth chariot horses various and strong, the squadrons of the Preachers and Minor Brothers with chosen leaders being sent together into battle, he raised up the spirit of holy Dominic, and giving him, as it were as a horse of his glory, the fortitude of faith and the fervor of divine preaching kindled, he encircled his neck. He who from childhood bore an aged heart, and in the mortification of the flesh chose to live, sought the author of life, and dedicated to God, and consecrated as a Nazarite under the rule of blessed Augustine, diligently imitating the service of Samuel in holy things, in the chastening of desire he continued the most pious affection of Daniel, keeping strenuously the paths of justice and the ways of the saints, and as it were at every moment from the tabernacle of the Lord, not departing from the teaching and ministry of the militant Church, subjecting flesh to spirit and sensuality to reason, and made one spirit with God, he strove to proceed wholly in him through excess of mind, and in the studies of sober compassion, he did not depart from charity toward his neighbor. When he shot down the delights of the flesh, and when his mind flashed forth against the stony minds of the impious, every sect of heretics trembled, the whole Church of the faithful exulted. As age increased, grace increased. Indeed, conceiving inexplicable joy from zeal for souls, he gave his mind to the words of God, and through the Gospel of Christ, generating many in the conversion of so strenuous a multitude professing the office of evangelical dignity, he merited to obtain the name and work of the greater ones on earth. Made a renowned pastor and leader among the people of God, he instituted the new Order of Preachers by his merits, ordained it by his examples, and did not cease to confirm it by evident and proven miracles.

5 § 3. For among the works of holiness and the signs of virtue, by which placed in the flesh he shone forth, in the curing of various infirmities, speech to the mute, sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, walking to the paralyzed, and the restoration of former health to many kinds of invalids, it was openly shown what spirit dwelt in the soil of that most holy body. When therefore from the great familiarity which he had with us in the lesser office, the proofs of his holiness had been established from the notable testimony of his life, and when afterward full faith had been made to us through suitable witnesses concerning the truth of the miracles spoken of;

6 § 4. We, trusting with the flock committed to us in the Lord that he is able to help us through God's mercy by his intercession, so that we who merited to have the solace of his gracious familiarity on earth may rejoice in his powerful patronage in heaven; by the counsel and assent of our brothers, and of all the prelates then present at the Apostolic See, have decreed that he be inscribed in the catalogue of the saints.

7 § 5. Firmly establishing, and by these presents commanding universally to your authority, that you

8 do not before the day on which, having laid down the burden of the flesh rich in merits, he penetrated into the holy places, made like the saints in glory, celebrate and cause to be solemnly celebrated his birthday 1, so that by his prayers

9 God, whom he served while living, being entreated, may grant us grace in the present age and glory in the future.

10 § 6. We moreover, venerating the admirable burial of so great a Confessor, which by the working of miracles, a sepulcher of miracles, illuminates the universal Church, desiring to frequent it with the worthy honors of Christian devotion: to the truly penitent and confessed, visiting it on the aforesaid feast day in each year with devotion and due reverence, trusting in the mercy of almighty God and the authority of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, we mercifully remit one year of the penance imposed upon them. Given at Rome on the fifth day before the Ides of July, in the eighth year of our pontificate.

11 Given on 3 July 1234, pontificate year VIII.

Note

  1. Namely, so that the feast of St. Dominic would not coincide with the Sunday of the Transfiguration, if it were celebrated on the day of August. Now it is celebrated on the fourth day of August, on account of the feast of St. Mary of the Snow (Constitution of Paul IV Gloriosus, 7 August 1858).
