17 A nessuno dunque ecc. Se qualcuno ecc.

18 Dato a Roma presso San Marco, nell'anno dell'Incarnazione del Signore millecinquecentoquaranta, il 26 settembre, dell'anno sesto del nostro pontificato.

XXXIII.
Approbation of the Institute and Religion of the Regular Clerks of the Society of Jesus.
Paul, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual remembrance of the matter.

1 Presiding over the Church Militant, though by unequal merits, by the disposition of the Lord, and seeking the salvation of souls with the solicitous zeal which we are bound to do by the duty of our pastoral office, we cherish with the grace of apostolic favor any of the faithful whatsoever who dedicate their vows to this end, and we make other dispositions concerning it, as, having weighed the quality of times and places, we perceive it to be wholesomely expedient in the Lord.

2 § 1. We have recently learned that our beloved sons Ignatius of Loyola and Peter Faber and James Laynez, as well as Claude Jayus and Paschasius Broet and Francis Xavier, as well as Alphonsus Salmeron and Simon Rodericus and John Coduri and Nicholas of Bobadilla, priests of the cities and dioceses of Pamplona, Geneva, Segovia, Toledo, Vich, Évreux and Palencia respectively, masters of arts graduated in the University of Paris, and exercised for many years in theological studies, inflamed by the Holy Spirit (as is piously believed), having long since descended from diverse regions of the world, came together into one, and became companions, and renouncing the allurements of this world, dedicated their lives perpetually to the service of our Lord Jesus Christ and to our service and that of our other successors, the Roman Pontiffs, and for now many years have laudably exercised themselves in the vineyard of the Lord, preaching the word of God publicly with prior sufficient permission, privately exhorting the faithful to live well and blessedly, and stirring them to pious meditations, serving in hospitals, teaching boys and unlearned persons those things which are necessary for the Christian instruction of man, and finally performing everywhere throughout the earth where they have traveled all the offices of charity and those things which make for the consolation of souls, with much praise.

3 § 2. And when they betook themselves to this nurturing City, and persisting in the bond of charity, in order to perfect and preserve their union in Christ, they drew up a form of living, according to those things which they judged would lead to the accomplishment and preservation of their society in Christ, in accordance with their proposed end, conformable to the evangelical counsels and the canons of the holy fathers, it came to pass that the institute of the life of these companions, comprehended under the said form, is not only praised by many good men and zealous for God, but is also approved by some in such a way that they wish to follow it as well.

4 § 3. The tenor of the aforesaid form is written here and follows and is such: § 4. Whosoever in our Society, which we wish to be marked with the name of Jesus, wishes to serve God under the standard of the cross, and to serve the Lord alone and the Roman Pontiff, His vicar on earth, after the solemn perpetual vow of chastity, let him propose to himself in his mind that he is a part of the Society instituted for this especially, that he may intend with principal care toward the progress of souls in the life and doctrine of Christ, toward the propagation of the faith through public preachings and the ministry of the word of God, spiritual exercises and works of charity, and namely through the instruction of boys and the unlearned in Christianity, and the spiritual consolation of Christ's faithful in hearing confessions; and let him take care always to have God before his eyes first, then the reason of this his institute, which is a certain way to Him, and to attain this end proposed to him by God with all his strength. Each one, however, according to the grace supplied to him by the Holy Spirit and the proper degree of his vocation, lest anyone perhaps use zeal but not according to knowledge; the judgment of which proper degree of each one and the discretion and distribution of offices shall be entirely in the hand of the superior or prelate to be chosen by us, so that a fitting order may be observed, necessary in every well-instituted community.

5 § 5. Which superior, by the counsel of his companions, shall have the authority of establishing constitutions, conducive to us for the accomplishment of this purpose, in the Council, the greater part always having the right of determining. The Council, however, is to be understood to be, in matters indeed grave and perpetual, the greater part of the whole Society, which can be conveniently convoked by the superior; in lighter matters and temporary ones, however, all those whom it happens to be present in the place where our superior resides; but the right of commanding shall be entirely with the superior.

6 § 6. Let all members know, and not only obedience in the first profession of their vows, but let them daily turn over in their minds throughout their lives that this entire Society and each individual member serves God under the faithful obedience of our most holy Lord the Pope and of the other Roman Pontiffs, his successors. And although we are taught by the Gospel, and by orthodox faith we know and firmly profess that all the Christian faithful are subject to the Roman Pontiff as the head and vicar of Jesus Christ, we have nevertheless judged it to conduce greatly to the greater humility of our Society and to the perfect mortification of each member and the denial of our wills, that each of us, beyond that common bond, be bound by a special vow, so that whatever the present and other Roman Pontiffs existing from time to time shall command, pertaining to the progress of souls and the propagation of the faith, and to whatever provinces he shall wish to send us, without any hesitation or excuse, we are bound to execute immediately, as far as in us lies, whether he shall send us to the Turks or to any other infidels, even existing in those parts which are called the Indies, or to any heretics or schismatics or even to any of the faithful. Wherefore those who are about to come to us, and before they put their shoulders to this burden, should meditate long and much whether they have such great spiritual wealth in good things that they can consume it, according to the Lord's counsel; that is, whether the Holy Spirit, who impels them, promises them such grace that they may hope, with His aid, to bear the weight of this vocation; and after they have, the Lord inspiring them, given their name to this militia of Jesus Christ, they ought to be girded day and night with their loins and ready for the payment of so great a debt.

7 § 7. But lest there be any ambition or detraction among us regarding missions and the procuring or avoiding of such missions and provinces, let each one be prepared never, directly or indirectly, to arrange anything regarding such missions with the Roman Pontiff, but to leave all this care to God and to the Pontiff himself, as his vicar, and to the Superior of the Society. The Superior, like the others, shall also profess that he will arrange nothing regarding his own mission in either direction, except with the Council of the Society, with the said Pontiff.

8 § 8. Let each one vow that he will be obedient in all things pertaining to the observance of this our Rule to the Superior of the Society.

9 § 9. But let him command those things which he shall know to be conducive to the construction of the end proposed to him by God and by the Society. In his office of authority, however, let him always be mindful of the kindness and gentleness and charity of Christ, and of the example of Peter and Paul, and let both he himself and the council constantly look to this norm. And let them have specially commended to them the instruction of children and the unlearned in Christian doctrine, the Ten Commandments, and other similar rudiments, whatever shall seem fitting to them according to the circumstances of persons, places, and times. For it is most necessary that the Superior and council watch diligently over the care of this matter, since the building of faith cannot rise without a foundation in our neighbors, and there is danger that, as each one becomes more learned, he might perhaps disdain this province as less splendid at first sight, when in truth there is none more fruitful either for the edification of our neighbors or for our own exercise of the duties of charity and humility together. But the subjects, both on account of the never sufficiently praised constant exercise of humility, ought always to obey the Superior in all things pertaining to the institute of the Society, and in him recognize and venerate Christ as if present, as is fitting.

10 § 10. Since we have found that poverty is a more joyful, purer, and more apt life for the edification of our neighbor, removed from all contagion of avarice and most similar to evangelical poverty; and since we know that our Lord Jesus Christ will supply to his servants seeking only the kingdom of God the things necessary for food and clothing, let each and all vow perpetual poverty, declaring that not only privately, but neither even in common, can they, for the sustenance or use of the Society, acquire any right to stable goods or to revenues or incomes of any kind, but let them be content to receive the use only of things given to them, for procuring necessities for themselves.

11 §11. They may, however, have in the universities a college or colleges having revenues, rents or possessions, to be applied to the uses and necessities of the students, with the superior and the Society retaining complete governance or superintendence over the said colleges and aforesaid students, as regards the election of the governor or governors and students and their admission, dismissal, reception, exclusion, statutes concerning the instruction of students, the building and correction thereof, the manner of providing them with food and clothing, and all other governance, rule and care whatsoever. Yet so that neither the students may abuse the said goods, nor the Society may divert them to its own uses, but may relieve the necessity of the students. These students, after their progress in the spiritual life has been recognized and after sufficient probation, may be admitted into our Society.

12 § 12. All members of the Society, whosoever shall have presided over sacred office, even though they do not hold ecclesiastical benefices or their revenues, are nevertheless bound individually, privately and particularly and not in common, to recite the office according to the rite of the Church.

13 § 13. These are the things which, with the approval of our aforesaid lord and of the Apostolic See, we have been able to explain in a certain manner concerning our profession; which we have now done in order to inform by this brief writing both those who question us about our way of life, and also our successors, if any imitators of this way of life shall ever exist, God willing; and since we have experienced that this way has many great difficulties attached to it, we have judged it fitting also to establish that no one be received into this Society unless he shall have been tested for a long time and most diligently, and shall appear prudent in Christ and conspicuous either in doctrine or in the purity of Christian life, and then at last be admitted to the army of Jesus Christ, who shall most favorably regard our humble beginnings, to the glory of God the Father, to whom alone be ever honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

14 § 14. Since, however, care must be taken in the aforesaid matters that nothing impious or unholy be done, we, the Pope (so that the same members, who have most humbly petitioned us on this matter, may be all the more prompt in their pious purpose of living, the more they know themselves to be embraced by the greater grace of the Apostolic See, and see the aforesaid approved by us), all and singular of the aforesaid things, as opportune for the spiritual progress of the same members and of the rest of the Christian flock, by apostolic authority, by the tenor of these presents, from certain knowledge, do approve, confirm and bless, and strengthen with the protection of perpetual firmness; and we receive the same members under our protection and that of this holy Apostolic See, nevertheless granting to them that they may freely and lawfully establish particular constitutions among themselves, which they shall judge to be in conformity with the end of this Society and the glory of Jesus Christ our Lord and the utility of our neighbor.

15 § 14. Care being taken in the foregoing matters that what is pious and holy be not lacking, We, the Pope (so that those same associates, who have most humbly besought Us concerning this matter, may be all the more prompt in their pious purpose of living, the more they shall know themselves to be embraced by the greater grace of the Apostolic See, and shall see the foregoing approved by Us), all and singular of the foregoing matters, as opportune for the spiritual progress of those same associates and of the rest of the Christian flock, by apostolic authority, by the tenor of these presents, from certain knowledge, do approve, confirm and bless, and do strengthen with the protection of perpetual firmness; and We do take up those associates under Our protection and that of this holy Apostolic See, nevertheless granting to them that they may freely and lawfully establish particular constitutions among themselves, which they shall have judged to be conformable to the end of such a Society and to the glory of Jesus Christ Our Lord and to the utility of our neighbor.

16 § 16. We will, however, that in the Society a number of persons of this kind, up to the number of sixty, wishing to profess this form of living, and not beyond, may be admitted and aggregated to the aforesaid Society only.

17 Let no one therefore, etc. If anyone, etc.
