David’s speech, in a solemn assembly: his exhortation to Solomon. He giveth him a pattern of the temple.
Agayne king Dauid calling al his states together, with commemoration of Gods singular fauour in electing him, and Salomon, 8. exhorteth them al, and namely his sonne to serue God sincerly: 10. and to build the temple, describing in what forme to make it.
1And David assembled all the chief men of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the captains of the companies, who waited on the king: and the captains over thousands, and over hundreds, and them who had the charge over the substance and possessions of the king, and his sons with the officers of the court, and the men of power, and all the bravest of the army at Jerusalem.Convocò adunque Davidde a Gerusalemme tutti i principi d'Israele, e i capi delle tribù, e i capitani delle bande, che servivano il re, e i tribuni, e i centurioni, e quelli, che amministravano i beni, e le possessioni del re, e i suoi figliuoli coi cortigiani, e i più possenti, e i più valorosi dell'esercito.DAVID therfore called together al the princes of Israel, the dukes of the tribes, and the heades of the compaynies, which ministred to the king: the tribunes also and the centurions, and them that were chiefe ouer the fubstance and possessions of the king, and his sonnes with the ennuches, and the mightie, and al the most viliant in the host of Ierusalem. 2And the king rising up, and standing said: Hear me, my brethren and my people: I had a thought to have built a house, in which the ark of the Lord, and the footstool of our God might rest: and prepared all things for the building.E il re alzatosi, e stando in piedi, disse: Ascoltatemi, fratelli miei, e mio popolo: io ebbi intenzione di edificare una casa, in cui posasse l'arca del testamento del Signore, e lo sgabello de' piedi del nostro Dio, e ho preparate tutte le cose per la fabbrica. And when the king had risen vp, and stoode, he sayd: Heare me my brethren, and my people: I meant to haue built a house, wherein the Arke of our Lord might rest, and the foote stoole of the feete of our God: and to build it I prepared al thinges. 3And God said to me: Thou shalt not build a house to my name: because thou art a man of war, and hast shed blood. But God sayd to me: Thou shalt not build a house to my name: because thou art a man of warre, and hast shed bloud. 4But the Lord God of Israel chose me of all the house of my father, to be king over Israel for ever: for of Juda he chose the princes: and of the house of Juda, my father’s house: and among the sons of my father, it pleased him to choose me king over all Israel. Howbeit our Lord the God of Israel chose me of al the house of my father, to be king ouer Israel for euer: for of Iuda he chose the princes: moreouer of the house of Iuda, my fathers house: and of the sonnes of my father, it pleased him to choose me king ouer al Israel.
5And among my sons (for the Lord hath given me many sons) he hath chosen Solomon my son, to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel.E de' miei stessi figliuoli (perocché molti figliuoli mi ha dato il Signore) ha scelto Salomone mio figliuolo, perchè segga sul trono del regno del Signore sopra Israele:Yea and of my sonnes (for our Lord hath geuen me manie sonnes) he hath chosen Salomon my sonne, to sitte in the throne of the kingdome of our Lord ouer Israel,Sed et de filiis meis (filios enim mihi multos dedit Dominus) elegit Salomonem filium meum ut sederet in throno regni Domini super Israël, 6And he said to me: Solomon thy son shall build my house, and my courts: for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be a father to him.E ha detto a me: Salomone tuo figliuolo edificherà la mia casa, e i miei atrj: perocché lui ho scelto per mio figliuolo, e io sarogli padre.and he sayd to me: Salomon thy sonne shal build my house, and my courtes: for him haue I chosen to me for a sonne, and I wil be to him for a father.dixitque mihi: Salomon filius tuus ædificabit domum meam, et atria mea: ipsum enim elegi mihi in filium, et ego ero ei in patrem. 7And I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he continue to keep my commandments, and my judgments, as at this day.E io stabilirò il suo regno fino in eterno, se egli persevererà nell'adempire si miei comandamenti, e le leggi, come fa adesso. And I wil confirme his kingdome for euer, if he shal perseuere to doe my preceptes, and my iudgementes, as at this day. 8Now then before all the assembly of Israel, in the hearing of our God, keep ye, and seek all the commandments of the Lord our God: that you may possess the good land, and may leave it to your children after you for ever. Now then before al the assemblie of Israel in the hearing of our God, keepe ye, & search al the commandmentes of our Lord God: that you may possesse the good land, and may leaue it to your children after you for euer.Nunc ergo coram universo cœtu Israël audiente Deo nostro, custodite, et perquirite cuncta mandata Domini Dei nostri: ut possideatis terram bonam, et relinquatis eam filiis vestris post vos usque in sempiternum. 9And thou my son Solomon, know the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart, and a willing mind: for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the thoughts of minds. If thou seek him, thou shalt find him: but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever. And thou Salomon, my sonne, know the God of thy father, and serue him with a persect hart, and a voluntarie minde: for our Lord searcheth al hartes, and vnderstandeth al cogitations of mindes. If thou seeke him, thou shalt finde: but if thou forsake him he wil reiect thee for euer.
10Now therefore seeing the Lord hath chosen thee to build the house of the sanctuary, take courage, and do it.Adesso adunque, dacché il Signore ti ha eletto a edificare la casa santa, fatti cuore, e compisci l'opera. Now therfore because our Lord hath chosen thee to build the house of the Sanctuarie, take courage, and perfitte it.Nunc ergo quia elegit te Dominus ut ædificares domum sanctuarii, confortare, et perfice. 11And David gave to Solomon his son a description of the porch, and of the temple, and of the treasures, and of the upper floor, and of the inner chambers, and of the house for the mercy seat,E David diede a Salomone suo figliuolo il disegno del portico, e del tempio, e delle camere, e dei cenacoli, e delle stanze segrete, e della casa di propiziazione,And Dauid gaue to Salomon his sonne a description of the porch, and of the temple, and of the cellars, and of the vpper loft, and of the chambers in the inner roomes, and of the house of the propitiation,Dedit autem David Salomoni filio suo descriptionem porticus, et templi, et cellariorum, et cœnaculi, et cubiculorum in adytis, et domus propitiationis, 12As also of all the courts, which he had in his thought, and of the chambers round about, for the treasures of the house of the Lord, and for the treasures of the consecrated things,E anche di tutti gli atri, che egli aveva ideato, e delle abitazioni all'intorno pei tesori delle casa del Signore, e pei tesori delle cose sante, moreouer also of al the courtes, which he had thought vpon, and of the chambers round about, for the treasures of the house of our Lord, and for the treasures of the holie thinges, necnon et omnium quæ cogitaverat atriorum et exedrarum per circuitum in thesauros domus Domini, et in thesauros sanctorum, 13And of the divisions of the priests and of the Levites, for all the works of the house of the Lord, and for all the vessels of the service of the temple of the Lord.E la distribuzione de' sacerdoti, e de' Leviti per tutti gli uffici della casa del Signore, e per tutti i vasi, che dovean servire alla casa del Signore.and of the diuisions of the Priestes and the Leuites, for al the workes of the house of our Lord, and for al the vessels of the ministerie of the temple of our Lord.divisionumque sacerdotalium et Leviticarum, in omnia opera domus Domini, et in universa vasa ministerii templi Domini. 14Gold by weight for every vessel for the ministry. And silver by weight according to the diversity of the vessels and uses.(Gli diede) l'oro secondo il peso, che aver dovea ciascun de' vasi pel ministero. E l'argento pesato secondo i diversi vasi, e lavori.Gold in weight for euerie vessel of the ministerie. A weight of siluer also according to the diuersitie of the vessels and workes.
15He gave also gold for the golden candlesticks, and their lamps, according to the dimensions of every candlestick, and the lamps thereof. In like manner also he gave silver by weight for the silver candlesticks, and for their lamps according to the diversity of the dimensions of them.E pe' candelabri d'oro, e pelle loro lampane diede l'oro, secondo la grandezza di ciascun candelabro, e delle lampane: e similmente l'argento pesato pe' candelabri d'argento, e le loro lampane secondo la varia loro grandezza. And for golden candlestickes also, and their lampes, gold according to the measure of euerie candlesticke, and of the lampes. In like maner also for the siluer candlestickes, and for their lampes, according to the diuersitie of the measure, he deliuered a weight of siluer. 16He gave also gold for the tables of proposition, according to the diversity of the tables: in like manner also silver for other tables of silver. He gaue also gold for tables of proposition, according to the diuersitie of the tables: in like maner also siluer for other siluer tables.Aurum quoque dedit in mensas propositionis pro diversitate mensarum: similiter et argentum in alias mensas argenteas. 17For fleshhooks also, and bowls, and censers of fine gold, and for little lions of gold, according to the measure he gave by weight, for every lion. In like manner also for lions of silver he set aside a different weight of silver. For flesh hookes also, and phials, and censars of most pure gold, and for little lions of gold, according to the qualitie of the measure he distributed a weight, for lyon and lyon. Similiter et in leones argenteos diversum argenti pondus separavit. 18And for the altar of incense, he gave the purest gold: and to make the likeness of the chariot of the cherubims spreading their wings, and covering the ark of the covenant of the Lord.E pell'altare, su di cui si brucia l'incenso, diede oro finissimo: e per farne la immagine di un cocchio di Cherubini, i quali stendendo le ale velassero l'arca del testamento del Signore. And for the Altar whereupon incense is burnt, he gaue most pure gold: that of it might be made a similitude of the chariote of the Cherubs spredding their winges, and couering the Arke of the couenant of our Lord.
19All these things, said he, came to me written by the hand of the Lord that I might understand all the works of the pattern.Tutte queste cose, disse egli, sono state mandate a me descritte di mano del Signore, affinchè io comprendessi tutti i lavori di quel modello.Al thinges, quoth he, came writen with the hand of our Lord vnto me: that I might vnderstand al the workes of the paterne.Omnia, inquit, venerunt scripta manu Domini ad me, ut intelligerem universa opera exemplaris. 20And David said to Solomon his son: Act like a man, and take courage, and do: fear not, and be not dismayed: for the Lord my God will be with thee, and will not leave thee, nor forsake thee, till thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord. Dauid also sayd to Salomon his sonne: Deale mansully, and take courage, and doe it: feare not, and be not dismayed: for our Lord my God wil be with thee, and wil not leaue thee, nor forsake thee, til thou perfite al the worke of the ministerie of the house of our Lord. 21Behold the courses of the priests and the Levites, for every ministry of the house of the Lord, stand by thee, and are ready, and both the princes, and the people know how to execute all thy commandments. Behold the diuisions of the Priestes and the Leuites, for euerie ministerie of the house of our Lord, assist thee, and are readie, and as wel the princes know, as the people, to doe al thy preceptes.
28:1
Year of the World 2989, Year before Christ 1015.
Israel. These are more particularly described as princes of the tribes, (Haydock) twelve captains, etc., 1 Paralipomenon 27:1.
Calmet
And his. Hebrew, "and of his sons." (Calmet)
We may also understand this of the preceptors of the royal family, 1 Paralipomenon 27:32.
Haydock
Officers. Literally, "eunuchs." (Haydock)
Bravest; particularly those specified [in] 1 Paralipomenon 21.
28:2
Haydock
Rising up from his bed, on which he lay, on account of his great age and weakness, while he addressed himself to his son; (3 Kings 1:47.; Calmet) or he rose from his throne, to honor this grand assembly. Hebrew, "stood upon his feet." (Haydock)
Calmet
Thought. Hebrew, "I, with my heart, thought to," etc. (Calmet)
Haydock
And, or which is the footstool. (Haydock)
The ark is often so called, because God was considered as sitting upon the wings of the cherubim, over it, Psalm 98:1., etc.
Building. No doubt what David left would have been sufficient. Yet Solomon thought that he could make something still more magnificent.
28:3
Calmet
Blood. See 1 Paralipomenon 22:8. (Calmet)
28:4
Calmet
Ever; for a long time, and to leave the throne to my posterity for many ages, and to the Messias for ever. This expression is not always to be taken in its rigour. (Calmet)
Haydock
Princes. Hebrew, "prince, or the ruler." (Haydock)
Worthington
This tribe had long possessed the greatest power, (Calmet) and the promise of the sceptre, Genesis xlix. (Worthington)
Du Hamel
The phrase often denotes a long time, but it is best understood of Christ. (Du Hamel)
28:5
Menochius
My son, by the mouth of Nathan, 2 Kings 7:13. (Menochius)
Calmet
Solomon was a figure of Christ, and his dignity was predicted, 1 Paralipomenon 17:11., and 3 Kings 1:13. (Calmet)
28:7
Haydock
If. The promises of the Old Testament were frequently conditional, and we always find the condition marked in some place; but those made to the Church of Christ, have no such limitation. (Haydock)
Worthington
Day. Solomon was once faithful, and afterwards fell; it is uncertain whether ever to rise again. Hence it appears that the true children of God may become wicked. (Worthington)
28:8
Menochius
Seek. Wilful (Haydock) or supine ignorance will excuse no man. (Menochius)
28:9
Du Hamel
Know, with affection (Haydock) and faith; and him alone must thou serve. (Du Hamel)
Haydock
Forsake him, and die impenitent. (Haydock)
28:11
Haydock
Description, impressed by God on David's imagination; (Cajetan) or rather planned out by the hand of God, (ver. 19.; Salien) as the law was written. (Haydock)
Estius
The Jews pretend that this plan was delivered to Moses, and handed down by Josue, etc., to David. (Estius)
Calmet
But why might not David receive it immediately from heaven? (Calmet)
Haydock
Treasures. Literally, "cellars." (Haydock)
Calmet
The original term, Ganzac, is not Hebrew. We find Ganas (Esther 3:9.) to signify a treasure, being derived from the Persian, Gaza. David gave, therefore, a description of the rooms to keep the treasures of the temple, or of the cellars for wine and oil. (Calmet)
Haydock
Septuagint, "a pattern of the temple and of the houses thereof, and of the Zakcho, and of the upper rooms, and of the inner storehouses," etc. (Haydock)
Menochius
Inner, or most retired closets, (3 Kings 20:30.; Calmet) where the Levites slept. (Menochius)
Haydock
Seat, where the ark was kept, and God was rendered propitious. (Haydock)
28:13
Haydock
Divisions, into twenty-four classes, (Menochius) which was done by God's order. (Haydock)
Menochius
For all, that every thing might be done with regularity. (Menochius)
28:14
Haydock
Weight, or sufficient for each, ver. 15. (Haydock)
Some think he only left a memorial of what quantity of gold and silver would be requisite. It does not appear that Solomon used silver for the vessels, as he chose to execute his father's injunctions with still greater magnificence.
28:15
Calmet
Silver. David probably intended that five candlesticks would be made of this metal: but Solomon made all the ten of gold, 3 Kings 7:49. There was one in the tabernacle, Exodus 25:31. (Calmet)
Menochius
But the temple was more spacious, and a greater number was not prohibited. (Menochius)
According. Hebrew, "for the use of every candlestick."
28:16
Calmet
Silver. Yet all the ten were composed of the purest gold, (2 Paralipomenon 4:12.) as silver was too common, ibid.[2 Paralipomenon] 9:20. Moses had only two tables. (Calmet)
Vatable
Diversity. Hebrew, "for each table." (Vatable)
28:17
Calmet
Lions. St. Jerome seems to have read cephir, instead of the present cephor, which is rendered "a cup, or bowl," 1 Esdras 1:10. (Calmet)
Haydock
Alexandrian Septuagint, "and of the flesh-hooks, libation vessels and bowls; and the weight of the golden and silver vessels (kepphoure; a word which they do not translate) of each weight." (Haydock)
Menochius
The change of i for u was very easy; and perhaps the basins were ornamented with representations of lions. (Du Hamel) (Menochius)
We do not find cephor used before, to denote any of the vessels of the tabernacle: but Esdras uses it, (chap. 8:27.) whence it is inferred that it is of Chaldean extraction.
28:18
Purest. Hebrew, "refined."
Haydock
Lord. He was represented as riding in a chariot, drawn by Cherubim, (Calmet) or sitting on their wings. (Haydock)
Two, particularly, filled up the space between the walls in the most holy place, and covered the ark, and also the Cherubim made by Moses, 3 Kings 7:23.
28:19
Haydock
These things, said he, is not in Hebrew. Septuagint, "All in the handwriting of the Lord, did David give to Solomon, according to the knowledge given to him from above, respecting the workmanship of the pattern." (Haydock)
Du Hamel
David saw the pattern in a kind of ecstasy; (Salien; Estius) or some prophet delivered it unto him, (Calmet) marked out by the hand of an angel, (Tirinus) like the tabernacle given to Moses. (Du Hamel)
28:20
Haydock
Lord. Septuagint add, "and I beheld, or behold, the pattern of the temple, and of the house and the Zakcho thereof, and the upper rooms and inner storehouses, and the house of the propitiation, and the pattern of the house of the Lord: (21) and behold," ver. 11. (Haydock)
28:21
Haydock
Thee. Hebrew and Septuagint, "for all workmanship, every willing skilful man for any service, also all the princes, and the people entirely at thy commands." (Haydock)
Calmet
The willing artificers are distinguished from those who were forced to work, though the former also received pay. (Calmet)

3. Who, then, is this Shunamite, this wife and maid, so glowing as to warm the cold, yet so holy as not to arouse passion in him whom she warmed? Let Solomon, wisest of men, tell us of his father’s favorite; let the man of peace recount to us the embraces of the man of war.

… “And thou, Solomon, my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve Him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts; if thou seek Him, He will be found of thee; but if thou forsake Him, He will cast thee off for ever.”
28:1
1. With Eunuchs. Eunuchs formerly presided over the royal court, and especially over the women's quarters; hence any prefects of the court or palace officials are called eunuchs, as I said on Genesis xxxvii, 36.
28:2
28:4
4. For from Judah he chose princes. The Hebrew, Chaldean and Septuagint have in the singular, a prince; but a prince, that is princes succeeding one another in continuous succession, according to that in Genesis xlix, 10: "The scepter shall not be taken away from Judah, nor a ruler from his thigh, until he come that is to be sent," namely the Messiah, or Christ, who was to be born of Judah and David.
28:9
9. But you Solomon my son, know God. "Know," that is, acknowledge him, so that you firmly believe, and frequently think upon and consider the immense majesty, power, justice, and goodness of God; so that this knowledge and frequent thought and meditation may impel you to continually worship, fear and love him.

11. House of propitiation, that is, the Holy of Holies; for in it was the propitiatory over the ark, from which God, being propitious, gave oracles to the High Priest and benefits to the people.

12. The treasures of the holy things. He means the treasuries, or coffers in which money offered to God and sanctified, that is consecrated, was kept.
28:13
28:17
17. Golden lion cubs, etc., and into silver lions. No mention was made of these lion cubs and lions in the description of the temple, III Kings cap. vii and viii, wherefore it is uncertain in what place and for what use they were placed. Moreover the Septuagint, Vatablus, Pagninus and Abulensis, reading כפר caphor for כפיר Kephir, that is lion cub, translate it as bowls or cups.
28:18
18. And to the altar in which incense is burned (namely to the altar of incense, which was in the Holy Place opposite the Holy of Holies) he gave the purest gold, so that (the Hebrew, Septuagint and Latin Vulgate have: and so that) from it might be made the likeness of a chariot of Cherubim spreading forth their wings, and covering the ark of the covenant of the Lord. You will ask: What and of what kind was this "chariot of Cherubim?" whether the same as the Cherubim of Moses and Solomon, which are enumerated in III Kings cap. vii and viii. Our Jerome Prado in the chapter I of Ezekiel, page 35, thinks they are the same. For he says that Solomon from the chariot of the Cherubim made by Moses made a chariot, because to the two Cherubim of Moses he added two others; thus from a chariot he made a four-horse chariot. For he added a cart with wheels, upon which the ark was to be placed. Thus Prado. But I say that this chariot is altogether different and these Cherubim are different from those two which Moses made, and the other two which Solomon added to them, III Kings cap. vii and viii. This is evident first, because those were beside the ark in the Holy of Holies; but these were made in the Holy Place above the altar of incense, as is said here. Secondly, because here Scripture says Solomon made them in the likeness; therefore they were not the same, but similar to the Cherubim of the ark. Thirdly, because the Cherubim of Solomon added to those of Moses did not make a chariot, nor one thing; but they were altogether separate from them. For the Mosaic Cherubim placed above the ark turned their faces toward each other, and embraced each other mutually with wings as if with hands spread out; but the Solomonic ones were placed at the side of the ark, so that they with the Mosaic Cherubim might veil and cover it: and each of them was on the same side, spreading their wings through the whole length of the Holy of Holies, so that one Cherub with his outermost wing touched the southern wall, and the other with his outermost wing touched the northern wall of the Holy of Holies. Therefore they could not make a chariot, but only one side of a chariot, or car. Fourthly, concerning the cart with wheels upon which the ark was to rest, which Prado asserts, Scripture has nothing anywhere. What the Cherubim signify literally and mystically, I have discussed at length in Exodus cap. xxv, Ezekiel cap. i, Apocalypse cap. iv. I say therefore that Cherubim were fabricated not only around the ark, but also at the altar of incense, and that they are dealt with here. They were similar to the Cherubim of the ark. For just as these with wings spread and joined veiled the ark, so these with wings spread and joined veiled the altar of incense, so as to provide a seat or throne as it were for God, and God sitting upon them might be seen to receive the smoke of incense which was burned for him at the altar. It is called "chariot" in Hebrew מרכבה merkaba, that is a car, not because there were four Cherubim; for there were only two, each of which facing each other with two wings spread, and joined with the wings of the other placed opposite, made a square or quadrilateral, and thus as it were a "chariot," that is a square car. Thus Abulensis. The sense therefore is, as if to say, David gave "the purest gold," so that from it might be fabricated the altar of incense, and in the same the chariot of Cherubim, similar to the chariot of Cherubim covering the ark of the covenant, which Moses had made. This sense is required by the Hebrew, which for ut has: and so that.
28:19
19. All things, he says, have come written by the hand of the Lord to me, that I might understand all the works of the exemplar. God therefore described on a tablet the whole idea of the temple and delivered it through the hand of an Angel to David, so that he might deliver the same to Solomon, who would build the temple according to it. God delivered a similar idea of the tabernacle to Moses, Exodus chapter 25, verse 40: "See, he says, and make according to the pattern which has been shown to you on the mountain (Sinai)." For "pattern" or paradigm, as the Septuagint translates it, he calls the idea, or delineation of the tabernacle temple, both exemplary and literal and verbal, so that namely by letters and written words he might explain the same delineation of the idea, which otherwise, since it was obscure and involved, could scarcely have been understood by David from sight alone. Wherefore that he himself and Solomon might understand it, God explained the same by words, writing it out in express letters: thus you shall make the Holy Place, thus the Holy of Holies, thus the court, thus each altar, thus the candlestick, thus the table of the loaves of proposition, and that from such material, such form; such height. And this is what David says here: "All things have come written by the hand of the Lord to me, that I might understand all the works of the exemplar." Thus Abulensis.

28:1
… angel had appeared on Moriah; he amassed (ibid. 21, 14-22, 19) vast stores of metals, precious stones, marbles and cedar wood from Lebanon, besides immense sums of gold and silver; he gave Solomon the detailed design of the buildings "inspired by God" (ibid. 28, 1-29, 19), exhorting the princes to assist him. Solomon (I Reg. 5, 9-15; II Par. 2-8) made an agreement with Hiram king of Tyre for the cutting and transport of cedars and firs (cypresses?) …

… This divine design begins to be realized in the covenant with Abraham (I Chron. 16, 15 ff.), develops in that of Sinai (II Chron. 5, 10; 6, 11), to be concretized and narrowed in that with David, as king of Judah (I Chron. 17, 16-27; 28, 4-8). This covenant, now realized in the reborn theocracy, flows into the kingdom of the M., the single and final object intended by Jahweh (I Chron. 17, 10-14). The post-exilic prophets …

… The Davidic dynasty was willed by the consent of the people, but first by God (II Par. 13, 4-12; 23, 3; 33, 7-8 etc.) as a reward for the "house" built for God by David-Solomon (I Par. 17, 7-27; 22, 10; 28, 6 ff.; II Par. 6, 7-11, 16 f.; 33, 7-8). God therefore, insofar as He is present in the Temple, in the midst of Israel, is its fulcrum. …

Propitiatory (Heb. Happōreth, Septuagint Ἐναστήρων)
On the day of expiation the high priest sprinkled the propitiatory first with the blood of a young bull, then with that of a goat (Lev. 16:11-15). The importance attached to the propitiatory is also suggested by the expression bēth hākhappōreth ("house of the propitiatory"; I Chron. 28:11), to indicate the Holy of Holies. …
