Bolla di papa Urbano VIII ·

CGLIV.

3 § 4. E inoltre per la maggiore gloria di Dio onnipotente e per l'incremento della fede cattolica, erigiamo un collegio nel palazzo predetto, nei suoi membri e nelle sue adiacenze, collegio pontificio, ossia seminario apostolico, sotto l'invocazione dei santi Pietro e Paolo apostoli, denominato Pastorale Urbano, per la propagazione e la tutela della fede cattolica e apostolica;

CGLIV.
Erection of the Urban College of the Propaganda of the Faith. Urban, Bishop, servant of the servants of God, for a perpetual record of the matter.

1 The Eternal Son of God, desiring to assume our mortality, as a most brilliant sun has arisen to dispel the darkness of infidelity and the shadows of ignorance which had filled the souls of men, and has taken care to spread the sparks of true faith everywhere throughout the earth by the Apostles and other preachers of the Gospel, as by the brightest stars. Since, however, certain regions still remain which, either because they are separated by great distances of place, or are cut off by barbarous savagery, have not yet received the light of divine law and faith, or some are found to which the splendor of the most holy Gospel once shone forth, but which have again been wrapped in the darkness of heretical corruption, or have been buried under the filth of the desertion of the Catholic faith by infidels and impious pagans, or, if a few have remained in the faith, are abandoned by shepherds and lie hidden in the dark night of perfidy or ignorance: therefore it falls upon us, who, though unworthy, bear the visible image of the divine and uncreated sun on earth, to bear the burden that suitable ministers be chosen, who, proceeding to those nations captured by spiritual blindness, shining with the brightness of good life and morals, burning with zeal for the Gospel doctrine and ardor for the salvation of souls, like candlesticks set upon the heights of mountains, may with all their strength dissolve and disperse the darkness both of infidelity and heresy. § 1. Since, therefore, as has come to our knowledge, our beloved son Master John Baptist Vives, a presbyter of Valencia in Hither Spain, in both our signature as referendary, and our domestic prelate, and familiar and continual table companion, and ordinary resident legate at our See and the Apostolic See of our beloved daughter in Christ, the noble lady Isabella Clara Eugenia, Infanta of Spain and the provinces of the Low Countries, princess and governess, moved by zeal for the house of God, the salvation of souls, and the propagation and protection of the holy Catholic faith, and by other pious reasons and devotion, has given, granted, ceded and transferred a certain palace in the street of the Most Holy Trinity on the Pincian Hill, called in the City, under the region of the Column, within his well-known boundaries, and the aforesaid street and public ways situated, otherwise called the Farnesina, which he now inhabits, together with all its parts, area, courtyard, stables, coach-houses, uses, conveniences, adjacencies and appurtenances, to the effect that in it and in its location an apostolic college or seminary of secular priests or clerics be erected, instituted and created, who must be promoted at least to the major sacred orders, or at least to some of them, within a year to be reckoned from the day of their reception therein, to be drawn from every nation and people, and by us and our Roman Pontiff successors existing from time to time for the propagation, extension and protection of the aforesaid faith throughout the whole world and all its parts, to endure in perpetual future times, and as long as the number of the elect is completed and there is one shepherd and one fold of Christ, under rules, laws, statutes, constitutions and ordinances to be issued and established by us and our successors with approval, and for its endowment, or in the name of endowment, and for the sustenance of the alumni to be introduced into the said college or seminary from time to time, twenty-three places of the mountains of the City called respectively of the Faith and of Saint Bonaventure, and fifty places, amounting together to five hundred sixty-five, or thereabouts, in Roman currency, at the rate of ten julii for each such scudo, ascending annually, and an annual census of another one hundred forty scudi of like currency (otherwise constituted for the benefit of the late Diomedes Mussi of Cremona for the principal sum of two thousand scudi of like currency upon the goods of the late John Francis Ugolini by the acts of our beloved son Rinaldo Buratti, notary of the court of causes of our apostolic chamber, under the date of the twenty-ninth of April in the year of the Lord one thousand six hundred twenty-four at the rate of seven per hundred and per year, and afterwards sold and ceded for the use of the said John Baptist by the acts of our beloved son also Lawrence Bonincontri, notary of the court of the Capitol, under the date of the seventh of August of the same year, and at present usually paid by our beloved sons born and heirs of the said late John Francis), and finally all his other goods, movable and immovable, present and future, sums of money, actions and inheritances, rights and other places of whatever mountains, which at the time of his death he shall have and possess, or which shall be known to belong and pertain to him in any way, existing in this our City and its district only (excepting, however, three thousand scudi of like Roman currency, at the same rate of ten julii for each such scudo, to be drawn from his more readily available movable goods, by him otherwise given in the refreshment of his soul to the hospital and church of Blessed Mary of Monte Serrato, called also of the City, by donation in contemplation of death, under the date of the first day of the month of December in the same year of the Lord one thousand six hundred twenty-five, by the acts of our beloved son James Morer, married clerk of the diocese of Elne, recorded in the archive of the Roman Curia, the usufruct of which during his lifetime, as well as of the said palace with its aforesaid parts, adjacencies and appurtenances, use and habitation, and of the aforesaid and other places of whatever mountains, and the aforesaid census, and the usufruct of all other goods, both movable and immovable, present therein, during our lifetime, the aforesaid donation shall pass to our immediate successor, under the same condition, and if he also fail in this, to other Roman Pontiffs our successors, as aforesaid, canonically entering in perpetuity, until and as long as the intention and pious will of the said John Baptist in the manner aforesaid shall have its full effect, and not otherwise, nor in any other
