AMMANNATI PICCOLOMINI, JACOPO. - Cardinal, b. in 1422, d. in 1479. He studied letters in Florence and took his doctorate in jurisprudence at Siena. He was secretary to Card. Domenico Capranica (1450–60), and by reason of his learning and piety earned the esteem of Callisto III, who appointed him Secretary of Briefs. His successor Pio II elected him bishop of Pavia (18 July 1460), and the following year created him cardinal of S. Crisogono (18 Dec. 1461). In gratitude, A. assumed the appellation Piccolomini. Paolo II kept him in the background, as he did the other cardinals of Pio II. Sisto IV entrusted him with the legation of Umbria (Sept. 1471), which he soon relinquished (July 1472). In Aug. 1477 he was transferred to the see of Frascati and received that of Lucca, while retaining the administration of the bishopric of Pavia. He spent his last years mostly outside Rome, in the Sienese territory. Siena granted him its citizenship.
He left various writings. Some have been lost. Of these, the collection of Lives of the Popes of his time is especially regretted. The Letters (782, from 1462 to 1479), and the Commentaries, which continue those of Pio II in seven books, have for the most part been published (ed. G. Gherardi, Milano 1506, and more satisfactorily Frankfurt 1614). Other letters survive in manuscript in the Vatican Archives (arm. XXXIX, t. X). Only part of a Concistorial Diary has been published (ed. E. Carusi, in the new ed. of Rerum Italicarum Scriptores, XXIII, III, Bologna 1904).
