AGATHO, POPE, saint. — A Sicilian, he succeeded DONUS in 678 and died on 10 January 681. By the sweetness and gentleness of his character he won the love of all. In very difficult times he showed himself generous to the clergy, making a general distribution in their favour and for worship, allocating the sum of 2140 gold solidi for the confession of the Apostles and St Mary ad praesepe. He personally administered the funds of the Roman Church, signing the receipts with his own hand. During his brief pontificate he made only one ordination of 10 priests, 3 deacons and 18 bishops.
