LAVIGERIE, CHARLES-MARTIAL. - Cardinal, born at Huire near Bayonne on 13 Oct. 1825, died at Algiers on 25 Nov. 1892. Ordained priest on 2 June 1849, he was for three years a professor at the Sorbonne; then, following the advice of Fr. de Ravignan, he accepted the direction of the schools of the East. This gave him the opportunity to undertake a charitable expedition

and a simple anti-slavery campaign. Leo XIII was able to affirm of him that he had been one of the most meritorious men of Catholicism and of civilization.
