CHIERICI SCALZI (Passionists) - Retreat of Sts. John and Paul. General house since 10 Dec. 1773: there the founder of the Congregation, St. Paul of the Cross, died on 18 Oct. 1775 - Rome, basilica of Sts. John and Paul.

many writers in the sacred sciences have made the Congregation illustrious. Vast is the apostolate that they exercise especially through sacred missions to the people and spiritual exercises for the clergy in retreats destined for this purpose.

They also have missions among unbelievers and schismatics. To them, in fact, has been entrusted since 1781 the diocese of Nicopolis in northern Bulgaria; the apostolic vicariate of St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother in the Marañón (Peru), the diocese of Yüanling (China), the vicariate of Tshumbe (Belgian Congo), and the apostolic prefecture of Dodoma (Tanganyika). Add to these the diocesan missions of Chachapoyas (Peru), of La Paz (Bolivia) and of Bogotá (Colombia).

Among the periodicals directed by them (about thirty), the following are remembered: The Sign (United States), with more than 100,000 subscribers; Kruis en Liefde (Belgium), Golgatha (Holland), The Cross (Ireland), Revue de la Passion (France), El Pasionario, Redención, El Iábaro (Spain), Il Divin Crocifisso, Il Crocifisso, L'eco di s. Gabriele, Il Sacro Costato, L'Addolorata (Italy).
