Tobias the father prayseth God, exhorting al Israel to do the same, 11. prophecieth the restauration and better state of Ierusalem.
1And Tobias the elder opening his mouth, blessed the Lord, and said: Thou art great O Lord, for ever, and thy kingdom is unto all ages.E il vecchio Tobia aperse la bocca benedicendo il Signore, e disse: Grande se' tu in eterno, o Signore, e il regno tuo è per tutti i secoli:AND Tobias the elder opening his mouth, blessed our Lord, and sayd: Thou art great Lord for euer, and thy kingdom world without end:Aperiens autem Tobias senior os suum, benedixit Dominum, et dixit: Magnus es, Domine, in æternum, / et in omnia sæcula regnum tuum: 2For thou scourgest, and thou savest: thou leadest down to hell, and bringest up again: and there is none that can escape thy hand.Perocchè tu flagelli, e salvi, e conduci al sepolcro, e risusciti, e nissun alla mano tua può sottrarsi.because thou scourgest, and sauest: leadest downe to hel, and bringest backe agayne: and there is none that may escape thy hand.quoniam tu flagellas, et salvas; / deducis ad inferos, et reducis: / et non est qui effugiat manum tuam. 3Give glory to the Lord, ye children of Israel, and praise him in the sight of the Gentiles:Date lode al Signore voi, figliuoli d'Israele, e celebrate lui nel cospetto delle nazioni:Cōfesse to our Lord ye children of Israel, and in the sight of the Gentiles prayse him:Confitemini Domino, filii Israël, / et in conspectu gentium laudate eum: 4Because he hath therefore scattered you among the Gentiles, who know not him, that you may declare his wonderful works, and make them know that there is no other almighty God besides him.Perocchè per questo vi ha dispersi tralle genti, le quali non lo conoscono, affinchè voi raccontiate le sue meraviglie, e facciate loro conoscere, come altro Dio onnipotente non havvi fuori di lui.because he hath therfore dispersed you among the gentiles, which know not him, that you may declare his maruelous workes, and make them know, that there is no other God omnipotent besides him.quoniam ideo dispersit vos inter gentes quæ ignorant eum, / ut vos enarretis mirabilia ejus, / et faciatis scire eos / quia non est alius deus omnipotens præter eum. 5He hath chastised us for our iniquities: and he will save us for his own mercy.Egli ci ha gastigati per le nostre iniquità, ed egli ci salverà per sua misericordia. He hath chastised vs for our iniquities: and he wil saue vs for his mercie.Ipse castigavit nos propter iniquitates nostras, / et ipse salvabit nos propter misericordiam suam. 6See then what he hath done with us, and with fear and trembling give ye glory to him: and extol the eternal King of worlds in your works.Ponete mente adunque a quel, ch'egli ha fatto con noi, e con timore, e tremore date a lui laude, e colle opere vostre onorate il Re de' secoli.Behold therfore what he hath done with vs, and with feare and trembling confesse ye to him: and extol the king of the worldes in your workes.Aspicite ergo quæ fecit nobiscum, / et cum timore et tremore confitemini illi: / regemque sæculorum exaltate in operibus vestris.
7As for me, I will praise him in the land of my captivity: because he hath shewn his majesty toward a sinful nation,E io nella terra di mio servaggio darò lode a lui, perchè egli la Maestà sua ha fatto risplendere sopra una nazion peccatrice. And I in the land of my captiuitie wil confesse to him: because he hath shewed his maiestie toward a sinful nation.Ego autem in terra captivitatis meæ confitebor illi: / quoniam ostendit majestatem suam in gentem peccatricem. 8Be converted therefore, ye sinners, and do justice before God, believing that he will shew his mercy to you.Convertitevi adunque, o peccatori, e siate giusti dinanzi a Dio, e crediate, che egli userà con voi di sua misericordia.Conuert therfore ye sinners, & do iustice before God, beleuing that he wil doe his mercie with you.Convertimini itaque peccatores, / et facite justitiam coram Deo, / credentes quod faciat vobiscum misericordiam suam. 9And I and my soul will rejoice in him.Ma io, e l'anima mia in lui avremo letizia. And I, and my soule wil reioyce in him.Ego autem et anima mea in eo lætabimur. 10Bless ye the Lord, all his elect, keep days of joy, and give glory to him.Benedite il Signore voi eletti suoi; solennizzate i giorni di allegrezza, e date a lui lode.Blesse ye our Lord al his elect, celebrate daies of gladnes, and confesse to him.Benedicite Dominum omnes electi ejus: / agite dies lætitiæ, et confitemini illi. 11Jerusalem, city of God, the Lord hath chastised thee for the works of thy hands.Gerusalemme, città di Dio, il Signore ti gastigò per ragione delle opere di tue mani.Ierusalem the citie of God, our Lord hath chastised thee in the workes of thy handes.Jerusalem civitas Dei, / castigavit te Dominus in operibus manuum tuarum. 12Give glory to the Lord for thy good things, and bless the God eternal that he may rebuild his tabernacle in thee, and may call back all the captives to thee, and thou mayst rejoice for ever and ever.Dà tu lode al Signore pei beni tuoi, e benedici il Dio de' secoli, affinchè in te egli ristauri il suo tabernacolo, e ritorni a te tutti gli schiavi, e tu sii nel gaudio per tutti i secoli.Confesse to our Lord in thy good thinges, and blesse the God of the worldes, that he may reedefie his tabernacle in thee, and may cal backe al the captiues to thee, & thou mayst reioyce for euer and euer.Confitere Domino in bonis tuis, / et benedic Deum sæculorum: / ut reædificet in te tabernaculum suum, / et revocet ad te omnes captivos, / et gaudeas in omnia sæcula sæculorum. 13Thou shalt shine with a glorious light: and all the ends of the earth shall worship thee,Tu splenderai di luce sfolgoreggiante, e per tutti gli estremi confini della terra tu sarai adorata.Thou shalt shine with a glorious light: and al the coastes of the earth shal adore thee.Luce splendida fulgebis, / et omnes fines terræ adorabunt te. 14Nations from afar shall come to thee: and shall bring gifts, and shall adore the Lord in thee, and shall esteem thy land as holy.A te verranno le nazioni rimote, e porteranno dei doni, e adoreranno in te il Signore, e la tua terra avranno per santa.Nations from far shal come to thee: and bringing giftes, they shal adore our Lord in thee, and shal esteeme thy land for sanctification.Nationes ex longinquo ad te venient, / et munera deferentes adorabunt in te Dominum, / et terram tuam in sanctificationem habebunt:
15For they shall call upon the great name in thee,Perocchè dentro di te quelle invocheranno il nome grande. For they shal inuocate the great name in thee.nomen enim magnum invocabunt in te. 16They shall be cursed that shall despise thee: and they shall be condemned that shall blaspheme thee: and blessed shall they be that shall build thee up,Quei, che ti sprezzeranno, saran maledetti, e saran condannati tutti quei, che diran male di te, e quelli, che ti edificheranno, saranno benedetti.Cursed shal they be that shal contemne thee: and damned shal they be that shal blaspheme thee: and blessed shal they be that shal build thee.Maledicti erunt qui contempserint te, / et condemnati erunt omnes qui blasphemaverint te: / benedictique erunt qui ædificaverint te. 17But thou shalt rejoice in thy children, because they shall all be blessed, and shall be gathered together to the Lord.E tu avrai letizia da' tuoi figliuoli, perocché saranno tutti benedetti, e si riuniranno col Signore. And thou shalt reioyce in thy children, because they shal al be blessed, & shal be gathered together to our Lord.Tu autem lætaberis in filiis tuis, / quoniam omnes benedicentur, / et congregabuntur ad Dominum. 18Blessed are all they that love thee, and that rejoice in thy peace,Beati tutti quei, che ti amano, e fanno festa per la tua pace.Blessed are al that loue thee, and that reioyce vpon thy peace.Beati omnes qui diligunt te, / et qui gaudent super pace tua. 19My soul, bless thou the Lord, because the Lord our God hath delivered Jerusalem his city from all her troubles.Anima mia, benedici il Signore, perchè ha liberata Gerusalemme la sua città da tutte le tue afflizioni, il Signore Dio nostro. My soule, blesse thou our Lord, because he hath deliuered Ierusalem his citie from al her tribulations, the Lord our God.Anima mea, benedic Dominum, / quoniam liberavit Jerusalem civitatem suam / a cunctis tribulationibus ejus / Dominus Deus noster. 20Happy shall I be if there shall remain of my seed, to see the glory of Jerusalem.Beato me, se un avanzo della mia stirpe potrà vedere lo splendore di Gerusalemme.Blessed shal I be if there shal remayne of my seede, to see the glorie of Ierusalem.Beatus ero si fuerint reliquiæ seminis mei / ad videndam claritatem Jerusalem. 21The gates of Jerusalem shall be built of sapphire, and of emerald, and all the walls thereof round about of precious stones.Di zaffiri, e di smeraldi saran formate le porte di Gerusalemme, e tutto il recinto delle sue mura di pietre preziose. The gates of Ierusalem shal be built of Saphire and the Emerauld: and al the compasse of the walles therof of pretious stone.Portæ Jerusalem ex sapphiro et smaragdo ædificabuntur, / et ex lapide pretioso omnis circuitus murorum ejus.

Tobias. Greek, "Tobit wrote a prayer for exultation, and said." (Haydock)
13:2
Menochius
Hell; death. (Menochius)
Out of hell there is no redemption or return. (Haydock) (1 Kings 2:6.)
13:4
Haydock
Therefore, is not in Greek. (Haydock)
Haydock
But God had the good of the Gentiles in view, that they might become acquainted with his law, and behold the conduct of his saints, Tobias, Esther, Daniel, etc., (Calmet) as well as to punish his people. (Haydock)
Worthington
Temporal afflictions are sometimes for the spiritual good of others. (Worthington)
Haydock
Greek, "because he has scattered you among them. There shew forth his grandeur, and extol him before every one living: for he is our Lord and God, our Father for ever. Yea, he hath chastised us in our iniquities, again he will have mercy, and will gather us from all nations where he has scattered us, if ye be converted to him with all your heart, and with all your soul, to act sincerely. Then he will turn towards you, and will not hide his face from you; and ye shall behold what he will do with you, and ye shall confess to him with all your mouth, and bless the Lord of power, and extol the king of ages. I," etc., ver. 7. (Haydock)
13:5
Calmet
Mercy. He can discover nothing in the sinner. (Calmet)
13:7
Haydock
Nation; the Israelites, (Menochius) whom he has chastised. (Haydock)
Ninive was still flourishing. Yet the Greek seems to refer to the Assyrian idolaters, (Calmet) or to both. Greek, "and I shew his power and magnificence to a sinful nation. Who knows if he will love and shew his mercy to you? I exalt my God, and my soul magnifies the King of heaven, and shall gladly proclaim his greatness: let all speak and confess to him in justice."
13:11

Jerusalem. What is prophetically delivered here, and in the following chapter, with relation to Jerusalem, is partly to be understood of the rebuilding the city after the captivity, and partly of the spiritual Jerusalem, which is the Church of Christ, and the eternal Jerusalem in heaven. (Challoner)
Houbigant
It would seem that Jerusalem and the temple were now destroyed, which is contrary to chronology, as Manasses had not yet began to reign, (Calmet) and Tobias died when he had been on the throne fifty-two years. (Houbigant)
Haydock
But the Greek shews that (Calmet) he speaks prophetically: (Worthington) "Jerusalem, holy city, He will chastise thee for the works of thy children, and again he will shew mercy on the children of the just. Confess to the Lord, for he is good; and bless the king of ages, that his tabernacle may be again rebuilt in thee, with joy." (Haydock)
Calmet
The Hebrew of Munster had only a few verses of this and the following chapter. (Calmet)
13:12
Call. Greek, "cause thy captives to rejoice in thee, and love in thee all the distressed unto eternity."
13:13
Haydock
Thou. Greek, "Many nations from afar shall come to the name of the Lord God, with presents in their hands, presents for the king of heaven; race after race shall praise thee, and give exultation. They," etc., ver. 16. (Haydock)
Haydock
How many potent monarchs of Persia, Egypt, Rome, etc., honoured the temple of Jerusalem! How many wars have been carried on by Christian potentates, to rescue that favourite spot out of the hands of infidels! all out of respect for Christ. These priests are still better verified in his Church, to which the powers of the earth have submitted, (Calmet) esteeming it an honour and happiness to be members of this holy society. (Haydock)
13:14
Holy. This soil has been carried into distant countries, out of reverence, (4 Kings 5:17.; St. Augustine, City of God xxii.8.) and has been honoured with miracles. (St. Gregory Turon. 1:7.)
13:16
Haydock
Despise. Greek, "hate thee, and blessed shall be those who love thee for ever." (Haydock)
13:17
Haydock
But. Greek, "rejoice, and exult for the children of the just, because they shall be gathered together, and shall bless the Lord of the just." (Haydock)
Calmet
The people of God, in the old law, have often this title, as those of the new are styled saints. Both have a claim to this prediction. The Jews became more faithful after the captivity, so that the most cruel persecution of Epiphanes could not overcome their resolution; and the world was astonished at the courage of the martyrs, and the exemplary conduct of the primitive Christians. (Calmet)
13:18
Haydock
Peace. Greek adds, "blessed are those who have mourned on account of thy chastisements, because they shall rejoice, beholding all thy glory, and their joy shall endure for ever." (Haydock)
13:19
Haydock
Thou. Greek, "God, the great king: For Jerusalem," etc., ver. 21. (Haydock)
Worthington
Troubles. This regards only the heavenly Jerusalem. (Worthington)
13:20
Seed. Hence it appears that Tobias did not speak of an approaching event, (Calmet) or at least he wished that his posterity might be set free.
13:21
Haydock
Emerald. Greek adds, "and precious stone: thy walls, and towers, and battlements, of pure gold. And the streets of Jerusalem shall be strewed with beryl and carbuncle, and stone from Soupheir." (Haydock)
Calmet
This description resembles that of Isaias, (liv. 11.) who lived a little before. St. John (Apocalypse xxi.10.) represents the church in the same ornaments, denoting the merits of Christ and the virtues of his saints. All are convinced that such expressions are not to be taken in the literal sense. (Calmet)
13:22
Worthington
Alleluia. A sound of praise. St. Augustine (ep. 86.) means, "Praise ye the Lord (Haydock) with joy." (Worthington)
Calmet
It is disused in times of penance. (Calmet)
Greek adds, " and they shall praise, saying, Blessed be God, who has exalted it for ever."

13:6
St Cyprian of Carthage † AD 258 Exhortation to Martyrdom, Addressed to Fortunatus 11
… “In the land of my captivity I confess to Him, and I show forth His power in a sinful nation.”
13:1
1. HE BLESSED THE LORD. — In Greek: He wrote a prayer in exaltation, and said.
13:5
5. HE HIMSELF WILL SAVE US BECAUSE OF HIS MERCY. — The Greek texts add: And he will gather us from all nations, where he has scattered us among them. If you turn to him with your whole heart, and with your whole soul, so as to do truth (justice, that is, just and holy works) before him, then he will turn to you, and will not hide his face from you.
13:7
7. HE SHOWED HIS MAJESTY IN A SINFUL NATION, — that is to say, God showed his august and divine power, justice and vengeance in the Israelitic nation, chastising its idolatry through destruction and Assyrian captivity, and again he showed his magnificent clemency toward it by having mercy on it, and leading it back from captivity to its homeland.
13:11
11. JERUSALEM, CITY OF GOD, THE LORD HAS CHASTISED YOU; — both because he had already led many Jews with the impious king Manasseh from Jerusalem captive into Babylon; and because shortly after he will lead the rest with Joachim and Zedekiah to the same place through Nebuchadnezzar; for he speaks of the future as of the past, on account of the certainty of prophecy. Note: Tobias from this verse to the end of the chapter, and in the following chapter verses 7, 8 and 9, prophesies concerning the destruction of Jerusalem to be made by Nebuchadnezzar, earthly, and concerning the restoration of it and its temple after 70 years of captivity to be made by Cyrus; but in such a way that in the manner of prophecy from the city of Jerusalem in Judaea it rises allegorically to the Church of Christ to be erected in Jerusalem, and from it anagogically it flies to the Church triumphant in the heavens, of which Jerusalem was a figure and type. Isaiah does the same, chapters LX, LXV and LXVI. Therefore this verse and the following, under the type of Jerusalem, partly already desolate on account of the idols of Manasseh, as is gathered from IV Kings, chapter XXXIII, verses 10 and 11; partly about to be completely desolated and overthrown under Zedekiah, again to be restored and elevated to greater glory through Ezra, Nehemiah, Zerubbabel and Cyrus, prophesies the renovation and restoration of the old Church through Christ, especially because the Christian Church began in Jerusalem on Sion; and because the Church of all ages was one, though having various states; whence verse 14 predicts the calling of the Gentiles and the diffusion of the Church throughout the whole world: but verse 21, anagogically it is caught up to the Church in heaven, or to the state which the Church militant will have in the heavens, where it will be triumphant. Whence St. John alludes, Apocalypse XXI, where he depicts the Church triumphant through the form of glorious Jerusalem, as I have explained at length there. In works, — that is on account of works, namely on account of your idols and crimes he led away, that is will lead away into Babylon.
13:13
13. YOU WILL SHINE WITH A SPLENDID LIGHT (of the Gospel and preaching of Christ, and of his Apostles), AND ALL THE ENDS OF THE EARTH WILL ADORE YOU. — He predicts the conversion of all nations to Christ, who adored the Church, as it were the Bride of Christ, that is humbly venerated and honored it, and venerate and honor it. Isaiah predicted the same, chapter XLIX, verse 23: "With face, he says, cast down to the earth they will adore you, and will lick the dust of your feet."
13:14
14. AND YOUR LAND THEY WILL HOLD IN SANCTIFICATION (that is as holy, and sanctified by Christ and the Apostles).
13:20
20. I SHALL BE BLESSED IF THE REMNANTS OF MY SEED (namely my grandsons and descendants) SHALL LIVE TO SEE THE BRIGHTNESS OF JERUSALEM; — both that which Cyrus would bring to it literally, and that which Christ would mystically bring to it in this life and more in the future.
13:21
21. THE GATES OF JERUSALEM. — All these things from verse 19 and henceforth properly pertain to the glorious Church in the heavens; for he says it is to be built there from sapphire, emerald, and every precious stone, by which figuratively nothing else is signified than the beauty, sweetness, majesty, brightness and eternity of heavenly beatitude, as I have declared at length on Apocalypse XXI. Moreover, the Greek texts have it thus in this place: Jerusalem shall be built of sapphire and emerald, and precious stone, and your walls and towers and bulwarks in pure gold; and the streets of Jerusalem shall be paved with beryl and carbuncle, and stone from Sophir. The Hebrew adds: The kings of Tarshish and the islands shall offer gifts, the kings of Arabia and Saba shall bring presents.
13:22
22. ALLELUIA SHALL BE SUNG THROUGH ITS STREETS. — "Alleluia" in Hebrew is the same as praise the Lord. Alleluia therefore is a voice of praise, exultation and joy, which the blessed continually perform in heaven. Whence St. Augustine, sermon 151 On the Seasons, which is on Easter: "The time of sorrow," he says, "which the days of Lent signify, we both signify and have. But the time of joy and rest and kingdom, which these days signify, we signify through alleluia, but do not yet have the praises. But now we breathe toward alleluia. What is alleluia? Praise God. But we do not yet have the praises; in the Church the praises of God are frequented after the resurrection, because there will be perpetual praise for us after our resurrection."

… Monday I), while he is gathering materials and treasures for the building of the Temple, celebrates God as the supreme being, master of all things, to whom it is most fitting to dedicate what man possesses of most beautiful and precious. - 5. Tobit (Tob. 13, 1-10: Tuesday I) celebrates the goodness of God and his designs of mercy upon the Jews even in the Babylonian captivity. - 6. In the Old Testament, the expression "K. of G." or the equivalent "thy, his, my kingdom" referring to God is found rarely: in Tob. 13:1; Dan. 3:54, 100; Ps. 144 (145):11, 12, 13; Ps. 102 (103):19; 21 (22):29 ("the kingdom is the Lord's"; a similar expression in Obad. 21), Wis. 6:4 (kings are ministers of God's royal …
… Moreover, for some petitions of the P. the parallels with the Old Testament hold good (for the Name of God: Lev. 22, 32; Is. 29, 23; Ez. 36, 23; for the Kingdom: Ps. 21, 29; 103, 19; Abd. 21; Tob. 13, 1, etc.), from which likewise descend, mingled with much dross, the rare felicitous expressions of the rabbinic texts.
13:16
BLASPHEMY. - Etymologically, b. (from βλάστιο = to harm and φήμη = voice) means "injurious word." In Sacred Scripture this term designates the uttering of insult either against God or against creatures (II Sam. 21:21; II Reg. 13:28-35; 19:10, 13, 22; Ez. 20:27; Tob. 13:16; I Par. 20:7; I Cor. 4:13; 10:30; Tit. 3:2); but according to the observation of St. Augustine: "blasphemia non accipitur nisi mala verba de Deo dicere" (PL 32, 1354), by b. …

It soon assumed the character of a festive acclamation, as a synthesis of the religious sentiment of the chosen people (cf. Tob. 13, 22 [Gk. 18]), in which the a. is given as the triumphal song of the new Jerusalem; thus in Apoc. 19, 1-6; cf. also the apocryphal III Macc. 7, 13, where the whole people cries out …
