Bull condemning Quietism (Miguel de Molinos)

Bull of Pope Innocent XI ·

INNOCENT XI PP.
"Innocent, bishop of bishops,
servant of the servants of God,
for perpetual memory of the matter."

1 The heavenly Shepherd, Christ the Lord, in order that He might free the world lying in darkness and wrapped in the various errors of the nations from the power of the devil, under which it was miserably held after the fall of our first parents, deigned by His ineffable mercy to take flesh and, with the handwriting of our redemption affixed to the wood of the Cross, to offer Himself as a living victim to God for us in testimony of His charity towards us; and soon, about to return to heaven, He left His Catholic Church, His spouse, as a new holy city, the Jerusalem descending from heaven, having neither spot nor wrinkle, one and holy upon the earth, fortified by the arms of His power against the gates of hell, entrusted to Peter, the prince of the apostles, and to his successors to govern, so that they might keep safe and sound the doctrine drawn from his own mouth, lest the sheep, redeemed by His precious blood, should fall back into ancient errors through the food of depraved opinions. That He commanded this especially to blessed Peter the sacred writings teach us. For to which of the apostles, if not to Peter, did He say: Feed My sheep? and again: I have prayed for thee that thy faith fail thee not: and thou, being once converted, confirm thy brethren? Wherefore we, who, not by our own merits but by the inscrutable counsel of God almighty, sit in the chair of that same Peter with equal power, have always held it firm in our mind that the Christian people should follow that faith which was preached by Christ the Lord through His apostles by perpetual and never interrupted tradition, and which He Himself promised would endure even to the consummation of the world.

2 tif. 11, and in Innoc. XII const. ed. MDCCCXCIX, on 12 March, pontif. vi, there is found a condemnation of a Gallican book. »4 Other editions do not have episcoporum (R. T.). strum had been reported that a certain Michael of Molinos had taught depraved dogmas both by word and in writing and had put them into practice, which, under the pretext of quiet prayer, contrary to the doctrine and usage received by the holy Fathers from the very beginnings of the nascent Church, were leading the faithful from true religion and from the purity of Christian piety into the greatest errors and the most shameful things: we, to whom it has always been a matter of concern that the souls of the faithful committed to us from on high might safely reach the desired port of salvation, purged of the errors of depraved opinions, legitimate preliminary inquiries having been made, ordered the aforesaid Michael of Molinos to be committed to prison; then before us and our venerable brethren, the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, specially deputed by apostolic authority as general inquisitors throughout the whole Christian republic, having heard many masters in sacred theology and having received their votes both orally and in writing, and having carefully weighed them, and having also implored the assistance of the Holy Spirit, with the unanimous vote of the aforesaid brethren of ours, we came to the condemnation of the underwritten propositions of the same Michael of Molinos (which had been acknowledged by him as his own and concerning which propositions, as having been spoken, written, communicated and believed by him, he was convicted and respectively confessed, as is more fully set forth in the process and decree issued by our mandate on the twenty-fifth day of August of the present year MDCLXXXVI) we decreed as follows.

PROPOSITIONS.

3 1. It is necessary for man to annihilate his own powers. And this is the internal way. 2. To wish to act actively is to offend God, who wishes to be Himself alone the agent; and therefore it is necessary to annihilate oneself in God

4 § 1. Since therefore we are called to the apostolate, we must be touched, and totally abandoned, and afterwards remain like a lifeless body.

5 III. Vows concerning something to be done are an impediment to perfection.

6 IV. Natural activity is an enemy to grace, and impedes God's operations and true perfection, because God wishes to work in us without us.

7 V. By doing nothing the soul annihilates itself, and returns to its principle, and to its origin, which is the essence of God, in which transformed it remains and divinized; and God then remains in Himself, because then there are no longer two things united, but one only, and by this reasoning God lives and reigns in us, and the soul annihilates itself in operative being.

8 VI. The internal way is that in which neither light is known, nor love, nor resignation, and it is not necessary to know God; and in this manner one proceeds rightly. VII. The soul ought not to think either of reward, or of punishment, or of paradise, or of hell, or of death, or of eternity.

9 VIII. The soul ought not to wish to know whether it proceeds with the will of God, or whether it remains with the same will resigned, or not: nor is it necessary that it wish to know its own state, nor its own nothingness, but it ought to remain like a lifeless body.

10 IX. The soul ought not to remember either itself, or God, or anything whatsoever, and in the internal way all reflection is harmful, even reflection upon its own human actions and upon its own defects.

11 X. If by its own defects it should scandalize others, it is not necessary to reflect, provided there be no will to scandalize; and that it cannot reflect upon its own defects is a grace of God.

12 1. Concerning doubts which arise whether one should proceed in this manner or not, it is not a burden to reflect.1

13 2. He who has given his free will to God ought to have care for nothing, neither for hell, nor for paradise, nor ought he to have desire for his own perfection, nor for virtues, nor for his own sanctity, whose hope he ought to purge. 3. With free will resigned to God, to that same God must be left the thought and care of all our affairs, and one must leave it to Him to work in us without us His divine will.

14 4. He who is resigned to divine will does not befit it that he ask anything from God, because to ask is imperfection, since it is an act of one's own will and choice, and it is to will that the divine will be conformed to ours, and not that ours be conformed to the divine. And that word of the Gospel, Ask and you shall receive, was not spoken by Christ for interior souls, who do not wish to have a will; indeed, souls of this kind come to such a point that they cannot ask anything from God. 5. Just as they ought not to ask anything from God, so neither ought they to give thanks to Him for anything, because both are an act of one's own will. 6. It does not befit one to seek indulgences for the penalty due to one's own sins, because it is better to satisfy divine justice than to seek divine mercy, since that proceeds from pure love of God, and this from our interested love, and it is neither pleasing to God nor meritorious, because it is to wish to flee the cross. 7. With free will given to God, and to Him left the care and knowledge of our soul, one ought no longer to take account of temptations, nor ought any other resistance to be made to them except a negative one, with no industry applied; and if nature is moved,1 one ought to let it be moved, because it is nature. 8. He who in prayer uses images, figures, species and his own concepts does not adore God in spirit and in truth.

15 9. He who loves God in the manner that reason argues or the intellect comprehends does not love the true God. 10. To assert that in prayer it is necessary to bring oneself aid through discourse and through thoughts, when God does not speak to the soul, is ignorance. God never speaks; His speaking is operation; and He always works in the soul, when the soul does not impede Him with its discourses, thoughts and works.

16 11. In prayer it is necessary to remain in obscure and universal faith with quietude and forgetfulness of any particular and distinct thought of the attributes of God and the Trinity, and thus to remain in God's presence to adore and love Him and to serve Him, but without the production of acts, because God does not take pleasure in these. 12. This knowledge through faith is not an act produced by the creature, but is knowledge given by God to the creature, which the creature does not know that it has, nor afterwards knows that it had it; and the same is said of love.

17 13. The mystics, with St. Bernard in Scala claustralium, distinguish four degrees: reading, meditation, prayer and infused contemplation. He who always remains in the first never comes to the second, which is infused prayer; and when this ceases, the soul passes over. He who always persists in the second never comes to the third, which is our acquired contemplation. In this one must persist throughout one's whole life, provided God does not draw the soul, without the soul expecting it, to contemplation; one ought to return to the third degree and remain in it, without returning further to the second or first.

18 14. Whatever thoughts occur in prayer, even impure ones, even against God, the Saints, faith and the sacraments, if they are not voluntarily nourished, nor voluntarily expelled, but are tolerated with indifference and resignation, do not impede the prayer of faith; indeed they make it more perfect, because the soul then remains more resigned to the divine will. 15. Even if sleep should come upon one and one should sleep, nevertheless actual prayer and contemplation still take place, because prayer and resignation, resignation and prayer are the same, and while resignation endures, prayer also endures.

19 16. Those three ways, the purgative, the illuminative and the unitive, are the greatest absurdity that has been said in mysticism, since there is but one way, namely the internal way.

20 17. He who desires and embraces sensible devotion in this manner does not desire or seek God, but himself, and acts badly, since he desires it and strives to have it, he who walks by the internal way, both in sacred places and on solemn days.

21 18. Weariness of spiritual things is good, if indeed through it one's own love is purged.

22 19. While the internal soul finds distasteful discourse about God and virtues, and remains cold, feeling no fervour in itself, it is a good sign. 20. All that is sensible which we experience in spiritual life is abominable, foul and unclean.

23 21. No one who is meditative exercises true internal virtues, which ought not to be known by the senses. One must believe in virtues.

24 XXXIV. Neither before nor after communion is any other preparation or thanksgiving required for these interior souls, except perseverance in the usual passive resignation, because in this is contained charity, which in a more perfect manner supplies all the acts of virtues which can be made and are made in the ordinary way. And if on this occasion of communion movements of humiliation, petition or thanksgiving arise, they are to be repressed, whenever it is not discerned that they are from a special impulse of God, such as are the impulses of nature not yet dead.

25 XXXV. The soul acts badly, which proceeds by this interior way, if on solemn days it wishes by some particular effort to excite in itself some devout feeling; because for interior souls all days are equal, all festive; and the same is said of sacred places, because for souls of this kind all places are equal. XXXVI. To give thanks to God in words and tongue is not for interior souls, which ought to remain in silence, putting no impediment to God that He may work in them; and the more they resign themselves to God, the more they experience that they cannot recite the Lord's Prayer, or Our Father. XXXVII. It is not fitting for souls of this interior way that they perform operations even virtuous ones from their own choice and activity, otherwise they would not be dead: nor ought they to elicit acts of love toward the Blessed Virgin, the Saints, or the humanity of Christ, because, since these are sensible objects, such love toward them is sensible.

26 XXXVIII. No creature, neither the Blessed Virgin nor the Saints ought to sit in our heart, because God alone wishes to occupy and possess it.

27 XXXIX. On the occasion of temptations, even 2 and therefore to be dismissed, furious ones, the soul ought not to elicit explicit acts of opposite virtues, but ought to remain in the aforesaid love and resignation.

28 XL. Voluntary cross undertaken is a heavy and fruitless burden. XLI. The holiest works and penances which the saints performed are not sufficient to remove from the soul even a single attachment.

29 XLII. The Blessed Virgin never performed any external work, and yet she was holier than all the saints. Therefore holiness can be attained without external work. God permits and wills, to lead us to blessedness and to true transformation, that in some perfect souls, even those not possessed, the demon should cause violence in their bodies, and make them commit carnal acts, that in waking and without darkening of mind, moving physically their hands and other members against their will; and the same is said regarding other acts intrinsically sinful; in which case they are not sins, because in these there is no consent.

30 XLIII. There can be a case in which such violence to carnal acts happens at the same time on the part of two persons, namely male and female, and on the part of each there follows an act. XLIV. God in past ages made saints through the ministry of tyrants, but now He makes them saints through the ministry of demons, who, by causing in them the aforesaid violence, makes them despise and annihilate themselves more, and resign themselves to God.

31 XLV. Job blasphemed, and yet did not sin with his lips, but it was from the violence of the demon.

An. C. 1687 INNOCENTIUS XI PP.

32 XLVI. St. Paul suffered such violence of the demon in his body, whence he wrote: For I do not that good which I will; but the evil which I hate, that I do. XLVII. Such violence is a means more proportionate to annihilate the soul and lead it to true transformation and union, nor does any other way remain. And this is the easier and safer way. XLVIII. When such violence occurs, it is necessary to allow Satan to work, using no industry, no personal effort, but man ought to remain in his nothingness, and even if there follow pollutions and obscene acts by his own hands, and even worse things, there is no need to disquiet himself, but scruples, doubts and fears are to be cast out, because the soul becomes more illuminated, more strengthened, and more pure, and holy freedom is acquired. And above all there is no need to confess these things, and it is most holy not to confess them, because in this way the demon is overcome, and a treasure of peace is acquired.

33 XLIX. Satan, who inflicts such violence, then persuades that they are grave sins, so that the soul may disquiet itself, lest it progress further in the interior way; whence, to weaken his forces, it is better not to confess them, because they are not sins, nor even venial.

34 L. Job from the violence of the demon polluted himself with his own hands, at the same time that he had pure prayers to God (thus interpreting the passage from Wisdom XVI, Job).

35 LI. David, Jeremiah, and many of the holy prophets suffered such violence of these impure external operations.

36 in the Sacred Scripture there are many examples of violence leading to external sinful acts; such as that concerning Samson, who by violence killed himself with the Philistines, entered into marriage with a foreigner, and fornicated with Dalila a harlot, which things were prohibited to others and would have been sins; concerning Judith, who lied to Holofernes; concerning Elisha, who cursed the boys; concerning Elijah, who burned the commanders with the troops of King Ahab. Whether truly such violence was wrought immediately by God or by the ministry of demons, as happens in other souls, the matter is left in doubt.

37 When such violence, even impure violence, occurs without obscuring of the mind, then the soul can be united to God, and in fact is always more united. — To know in practice whether some operation in other persons was violence, the rule which I have concerning this is not merely the protestations of those souls, which protest that they did not consent to such violence, or that they cannot swear that they consented in them, and to see that they are souls who make progress in the internal way, but to take the rule from a certain actual light, knowledge superior to human and theological knowledge, which makes me know with certainty with internal certitude that such an operation is violence, and I am certain that this light proceeds from God, because it comes to me joined with certainty that it proceeds from God, and leaves me not even a shadow of doubt to the contrary, in the manner in which it sometimes happens that God, revealing something, at the same time makes the soul certain that it is He who reveals, and the soul cannot have doubt to the contrary. Spiritual persons of ordinary life will find themselves deluded at the hour of death and confused with all passions to be purged in another world.

38 By this internal way one arrives, although with much suffering, at purging and extinguishing all passions, so that nothing more is felt, nothing, nothing, nor is any disquiet felt, like a dead body, nor does the soul allow itself to be moved any further.

39 Two laws and two desires, one of the soul and the other of self-love, endure so long as self-love endures; whence, when this is purged and dead, as happens through the internal way, those two laws and two desires are no longer present, nor is any further lapse incurred, nor is anything felt any more, not even venial sin.

40 By acquired contemplation one arrives at a state of no longer committing sins, neither mortal nor venial. One arrives at such a state by no longer reflecting upon one's own operations, because defects arise from reflection.

41 The internal way is separated from confession, from confessors and from cases of conscience, from theology and philosophy. To souls advanced, which begin to die to reflections, and even arrive at being dead, God sometimes makes confession impossible, and supplies himself with such preserving grace as they would receive in the sacrament, and therefore such souls in such a case it is not good to approach the sacrament of penance, because it is impossible for them. A soul, when it has arrived at mystical death, can no longer will anything other than what God wills, because it no longer has a will, and God has taken it from it.

42 By the internal way one arrives at a continuous immobile state in undisturbed peace.

43 By the internal way one arrives also at the death of the senses; nay, the sign that one remains in a state of nothingness, that is, of mystical death, is if sensible things affect one as if they were not, because they do not reach the point of causing the intellect to apply itself to them. A theologian has less disposition than an unlearned man for the state of contemplative; first, because he does not have faith so pure; second, because he is not so humble; third, because he does not care so much for his own salvation; fourth, because his head is full of phantasms, species, opinions and speculations, and he cannot enter into that true light.

44 LXV. Obedience is owed to superiors in external matters, and the breadth of the vow of obedience of religious pertains only to external things. In internal matters, however, the situation is different, where God alone and the director enter. LXVI. A certain new doctrine in the Church of God is worthy of ridicule, namely that the soul ought to be governed in its internal aspect by the bishop: and if the bishop is not capable, let the soul approach him with its director. I call it a new doctrine, because neither Sacred Scripture, nor councils, nor canons, nor bulls, nor the Saints, nor authors have ever transmitted it, nor can they transmit it, because the Church does not judge of hidden things, and the soul has the right to choose whomever it sees fit. LXVII. To say that the internal must be made manifest to the external tribunal of superiors, and that it is a sin not to do so, is manifest deception; because the Church does not judge of hidden things; and they prejudice souls themselves by these deceptions and simulations. LXVIII. In the Order there is neither faculty nor jurisdiction to command that the letters of the director regarding the internal aspect of the soul be made manifest, and therefore it is necessary to observe that this is an assault of Satan. Which propositions indeed, as heretical, suspect and erroneous, scandalous, blasphemous, offensive to pious ears, rash, relaxative and subversive of Christian discipline and seditious respectively, and whatever has been issued from them in word, writing or print likewise with the vote of the same brothers of ours, the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church and Inquisitors General, we have condemned, circumscribed and abolished: and concerning the same and all similar matters and individual instances, we have also henceforth forbidden to anyone the faculty of speaking, writing, disputing in this manner, and of believing, holding, teaching them, or reducing them to practice, and we have perpetually deprived those acting contrary in ipso facto of all dignities, ranks, honors, benefices and offices, and we have decreed them incapable of any office whatsoever, and we have bound them also with the bond of anathema by that very fact, from which they can be absolved only by us and by the Roman Pontiffs our successors. Furthermore, by the same our decree we have prohibited and condemned all books, and all works printed in whatever place and language, as well as all manuscripts of the same Michael de Molinos, and we have forbidden that anyone of whatever rank, condition or status, even one worthy of special note, should dare under any pretext, in whatever language likewise, either under the same words, or under equal or equivalent ones, or without a name, or under a false or alien name, to print them or have them printed, nor, if printed or manuscript, to read them or retain them with himself, but they are bound to deliver and consign them immediately to the Ordinaries of places or to the Inquisitors of heretical depravity under the same penalties inflicted above, which Ordinaries and Inquisitors are to burn them immediately and have them burned by fire. Finally, in order that the aforesaid Michael de Molinos, on account of the heresies, errors and foul deeds aforesaid, might be punished with fitting penalties as an example to others and for his own correction, the entire process having been read in the same our Congregation, and the beloved sons our consultors of the holy Office of the Inquisition, masters in sacred theology and in pontifical law, having been heard, by the unanimous vote of the same venerable brothers of ours, the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, we have condemned the said Michael de Molinos as a defendant convicted and confessed respectively and as a formal heretic, although penitent, to the penalty of close and perpetual imprisonment, and to the performance of other salutary penances, provided however that an abjuration of the formal kind be first emitted by him, the order of law being observed: commanding that on the day and hour to be fixed in the church of St. Mary above the Minerva of this nurturing City, in the presence of all the venerable brothers of ours, the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church and the prelates of the Roman Curia of ours, and the whole people, also being summoned to this by the grant of indulgences, the tenor of the process be read from on high, with the same Michael de Molinos standing in the pulpit, together with the sentence following therefrom, and after the same Molinos, clothed in the habit of penitence, had publicly abjured the aforesaid errors and heresies, we gave faculty to the beloved son our commissary of the S. Office, that he should absolve him from the censures with which he was bound, in the customary form of the Church; which all things in execution of the said our ordinance on the 13th day of September of the current year were solemnly accomplished.

45 depravity Inquisitors immediately and deliver and consign them under the same penalties inflicted above, which Ordinaries and Inquisitors are to burn them immediately and have them burned by fire. 46 Aforesaid § Q. And although the aforementioned decree, all things anew are confirmed, Clauses, Faith of transcripts, ¥ Penal Sanction, issued by our mandate, published by public printing and affixed and divulged in public places for the greater caution of the faithful, nevertheless, lest the memory of this apostolic condemnation be able to be erased in future times, and that the Christian people, instructed in Catholic truth, may be able to proceed by the way of salvation, adhering to the footsteps of our predecessors, the Supreme Pontiffs, by this our perpetual constitution to endure, we again approve, confirm and command the aforesaid decree to be delivered to due execution, again definitively condemning and reprobating the aforesaid propositions, and prohibiting and interdicting the books and manuscripts of the same Michael of Molinos, under the same penalties and censures laid down and inflicted against transgressors.

47 § 3. Decreeing moreover that these present letters shall always and perpetually be valid and efficacious and shall be, and shall obtain and acquire their full and complete effects, and thus by whosoever ordinary and delegated judges, exercising and about to exercise any authority, everywhere ought to be judged and decided, the faculty and authority of judging and interpreting otherwise being taken away from them and from each of them, and whatever is otherwise attempted concerning these things by anyone, by whatever authority, knowingly or unknowingly, shall be null and void.

48 § 4. We will, however, that transcripts of these present letters, even printed ones, subscribed by the hand of a public notary and furnished with the seal of some person constituted in ecclesiastical dignity, the same faith be given to them as would be given to the original letters themselves if they were exhibited or shown. F

49 § 5. Let it be lawful therefore to no one whatsoever to infringe this page of our approbation, confirmation, condemnation, reprobation, punishment, decree and will, or to dare to act contrary to it with rash presumption; if anyone, however, shall have presumed to attempt this, let him know that he will incur the indignation of almighty God and of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, his. Given at Rome, at St. Mary Major, in the year of the Incarnation of the Lord 1687, on the 22nd day of November, in the twelfth year of our pontificate. ~ Given on 20 November 1687, pontificate year xi.

-xy.

— _ xii. Deus praeterilis saeculis sanctos efficiebat tyrannorum ministerio, nunc vero eos efficit sanctos ministerio dacmonum’, qui, causando in eis praedictas violentias, facit, ut illi se ipsos magis despiciant atque annihilent, et se Deo resignent.

32 ‘XLV.

An vero fuerit violentia immediate a Deo peracta vel daemonum ministerio, ut in aliis animabus contingit, in dubio res - linquitur.

37 Lit.

PROPOSIZIONI.

3 I. Oportet hominem sibi potentias annihilare. Et haec est via interna. II.
