Decree declaring Blessed Margaret of Hungary a saint

Decree of Pope Pius XII ·

PAPAL LETTERS. BLESSED MARGARET, A VIRGIN OF THE ROYAL HUNGARIAN FAMILY OF THE ARPADIANS, A NUN OF THE ORDER OF ST. DOMINIC, IS INSCRIBED IN THE CATALOGUE OF SAINTS. PIUS, BISHOP, SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD, FOR THE PERPETUAL MEMORY OF THIS MATTER

1 Among the duties which, from the Apostolic ministry divinely committed to Us, albeit unworthy, We strive to discharge, none is surely more grave, none more sweet, none which brings Us greater solace amid the manifold cares and anxieties by which We are now pressed, than to decree the highest honours of sacred worship for those faithful who, while they lived, shone forth in every kind of virtue even to the degree of perfection, have been resplendent with the glory of miracles wrought by Almighty God through their intercession, especially after their death, and have justly obtained a steadfast reputation for sanctity. This indeed the Roman Pontiffs, inspired by the divine Spirit, have performed down to our own times, with the applause of the whole Catholic world, with all the greater solicitude and frequency, the more it appeared that the Christian people stood in need of more numerous intercessors before God and of the most illustrious examples of virtue.

2 Among whom We have now deemed it right and proper to number Blessed Margaret, that virgin, the glory of the Catholic Hungarian nation, daughter of King Bela the Fourth, a nun of the renowned Order of St. Dominic, who, since she exists in ancient possession of veneration, and concerning whose heroic virtues and miracles there is a constant assertion by historians worthy of credence and an unbroken fame of prodigies does not fail, seems surely worthy that We, even if not by formal and customary solemn canonization, yet by the supreme sentence of Our authority declare her to be Saint, and decree that she be inscribed in the album of Saints. From the royal Hungarian family of the Arpadians, which alone in one and the same thirteenth century brought forth four other illustrious women of sanctity to the Church of God, namely St. Elizabeth, related among the Saints by Our Predecessor of happy memory Gregory the Ninth in the year one thousand two hundred thirty-five, Blessed Agnes of Prague, her cousin, and the daughters of King Bela the Fourth, Cunegund and Jolenta, whose veneration has been confirmed by the Apostolic See, Blessed Margaret took her origin. In the year approximately one thousand two hundred forty-two, when the Tartars under the leadership of Batu were laying waste Poland and Pannonia with fire and sword, and Hungary, drenched with the blood of so many Christian faithful, was suffering their most savage devastations, from pious parents, Bela the Fourth, King of the Hungarians, and Mary Lascaris, Queen, received in the fortress of Dalmatia, Blessed Margaret was born. The parents consecrated the conceived offspring to God as a kind of expiation for the liberation of the kingdom and their own salvation, if a daughter should be born; and their prayers and vows were heard; for, when all things were suddenly made peaceful, they themselves were able to return to Buda together with the newly born Margaret. Her, made a protectress of the ancestral kingdom from her mother's breast, the most loving parent, mindful of the promise and benefit, led before her fourth year of age to the monastery of holy virgins of St. Catherine, Virgin and Martyr, of the Order of St. Dominic in Vesprim, so that from her very tender age she might be imbued with regular observances and serve God more fittingly. There, a disciple of the Cross from her heart, having utterly forgotten the royal house, Margaret flourished with such docile and obedient spirit that the nuns cherished her with most tender affection; and, beyond her years, she cultivated an angelic piety toward Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mother of God; she showed noble manners and purity of heart; and straightway she merited that the King of kings should desire her beauty.

3 Scarcely five years old, she wished to receive discipline together with her sisters, to fast and to wear a hair shirt. Wherefore her father the king, the Hungarian nation being fortified against the incursions of the Tartars by his works, so that he might more securely and more effectively procure divine aid for himself and his kingdom, built a certain monastery on an island of the Danube, which they formerly called the Island of Hares, today St. Margaret's, in honour of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, in which he not only took care to place pious sacred virgins, who, as living victims, would devote themselves to God alone and sing His and the Mother of God's praises, but also his own daughter, Margaret, whom among his other children he embraced with that more tender affection by which he perceived in her the earliest beginnings of a pious conversation pleasing to God.

4 Meanwhile, she made her own those words of the Apostle: I count all things to be but loss for the excellent knowledge of Jesus Christ my Lord; for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but as dung that I may gain Christ, having been refused in marriage by a certain honest Prince of Poland when she was twelve years old, she made solemn vows before the venerable Master of the Order, Humbert. Yet when she was earnestly sought by Ottocar, King of Bohemia, to keep her faith pledged to the Divine Spouse with all her strength unbroken, she wished to make herself openly espoused to Christ to remove that occasion and any other importunate instance of marriage, and she earnestly sought the sacred veil for her head, and on the fourteenth day of the month of June, in the year one thousand two hundred and sixty-one, from the Archbishop of Strigonia, with Bishops of Vác and Egres also present, as well as many ecclesiastical men, at the altar of St. Elizabeth her aunt, she obtained it with the greatest joy. Thus consecrated to the Spouse of Virgins, in contempt of the world and of herself, and in mortification of the flesh, she strove earnestly to become like the King of Martyrs himself. Always clothed in the worst garments, spurning gifts, she delighted in sweeping the house, wiping away filth, preparing food and often bearing heavy burdens in what others regarded as drudgery. To her sick sisters and even to the maidservants themselves, whom others sometimes feared to approach lest they contract their disease, she ministered with such charity and desire for abjection that she claimed for herself alone all grave and lowly offices toward them. Thinking nothing of her hands and elbows and knees becoming swollen and lacerated from contact with the frozen ground, her body worn down by much fasting she tormented severely with a hair shirt, scourges and sleepless nights, especially on Fridays and on the vigil of the Lord Christ and the solemnities of the Virgin Mother of God, and on the fifteen days preceding the Easter sacrament. She also recalled the mysteries of the Passion with sighs and burned with the ardor of martyrdom. Before Jesus Christ hidden beneath the veils of the Eucharist, or depicted upon the cross, she poured out her heart more willingly and for many hours daily, yet everywhere and almost without interruption she prayed, often adding to the prescribed divine praise the entire psalter, prayers to God the Father, or salutations to the Paraclete Spirit, or to the Virgin Mother of God so beloved by her. It is said that she cultivated all the theological virtues especially, in a heroic degree, with intense study and persevered constantly in their exercise unto death, so that she was a great incentive to virtue for others.

5 The virtue of Margaret appears to have shone forth especially during the time of a most bitter war, which arose between her father Bela the Fourth, King, and her brother Stephen over the governance of the kingdom and succession to it, and lasted for about four years, in which, with all order of justice thrown into confusion and the fear of God set aside both in prelates and in barons, many thousands of innocents perished without the equity of justice.

6 Such an unfortunate calamity so tormented the soul of Margaret that tears were her bread day and night: for she saw her paternal family torn apart so bitterly by quarrels and discord, the people endangered and oppressed without distinction of sex and age, and the holy mother Church herself, not only in this kingdom but also in other parts of Christendom, trampled and torn by tyranny, cloisters and religious places left desolate without inhabitants, all divine and human rights wickedly confused. In order to appease the wrath of Almighty God and to obtain divine mercy for her people, she wept more abundantly and mortified her body with fasts, clothed in a hair shirt, as if mourning the sins of all who acted so wickedly toward God and bewailing the calamities of the oppressed, and with all her prayers she pressed upon God, that His right hand, with the powers of the wicked obstructed and restrained, would defend the innocent and the holy mother Church, gathered by the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7 Moreover, Margaret did not confine her action only to the most fervent prayers to God and the harshest penance, but also, being invested with authority or dignity, she did not hesitate to openly reproach iniquity committed by anyone, however invested with the highest authority or dignity; which caused her to turn her father's royal anger upon herself and to suffer his persecution as well, which she had previously spurned with blandishments, yet she feared it not at all and bore it undaunted, nor did she cease her work of reproving human wickedness and at the same time of pacifying the minds of adversaries.

8 Her prayers poured out most abundantly to God, joined with the mortification of her virgin body, were at length heard by the Most High, peace being restored between her father and brother, which was solemnly ratified on the Island of Lepor, in the very monastery sanctified by Margaret, in the year of our Lord one thousand two hundred and sixty-six.

9 To strengthen the peace of his kingdom ever more, King Bela determined to unite his family by affinity with Charles, Count of Anjou, who in the year one thousand two hundred sixty-six was made King of Naples; and for this reason he proposed marriage between him and his daughter Margaret, adding that he would easily obtain from Pope Clement the Fourth a dispensation from the vows of religion made for her. Margaret immediately refused these nuptials proposed for the third time, freely responding that she wished to preserve her virginity for the Lord Jesus Christ. And this Divine Spouse, always faithful and more generous, who had made a sweet dwelling in the heart of His handmaid, abundantly filled her with heavenly gifts, making her a companion of His passion and a sharer in consolation and power both in life and after death.

10 For she is said to have prophesied from childhood, and being accustomed to be withdrawn from her senses in sacred matters, to have known the secrets of hearts, and to have wrought not a few healings and prodigies by divine power.

11 Foreknowing at last her approaching death, she earnestly petitioned and, as she had desired, received repeatedly the last sacraments of the Church, which being received with angelic piety, on the feast of St. Prisca, in the year one thousand two hundred seventy, not yet having completed sixteen years of age, Margaret, joined to the diadem of Christ, entered heaven. Her virginal body, bearing a certain adornment of the future resurrection with a sweet fragrance, being solemnly borne to the tomb, was a remedy for the ailments of the suppliant, as is reported; and many prodigies are recounted and graces granted through the intercession of God's Handmaid, even to the present day.

12 It is therefore no wonder that the name of Margaret is most celebrated in the Hungarian region and renowned in others; for she herself illuminated her earthly homeland with the sweetness of heroic virtues, and with the light of holiness and the fame of miracles; but beyond the borders of her homeland as well, that glorious name has become known especially through the Order of Preachers, which glories in being increased by the singular protection of the Blessed One, both through the accounts which were published concerning Margaret as a saint immediately after her death, and especially from the apostolic process constructed six years after the death of the royal Virgin, in which the title of Blessed or Saint Margaret is frequently attributed to her by witnesses, sanctioned by ecclesiastical and supreme authority.

13 [16] The veneration, however, shown to this Handmaid of God, begun immediately after her precious death, shining with ever new light, has come down to our times. For it is made clear as daylight both from biographical histories composed in various languages; and from monuments, among which there exists a precious pallium in our Basilica of St. Peter, given, as is reported, by Elizabeth, Queen of Hungary, in the year one thousand three hundred forty-three, in which, together with the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and four images of Saints of the Hungarian royal family, the image of Margaret also, daughter of the King of Hungary, was seen, to whom also the title of Saint was attributed; and from the veneration of the faithful toward the tomb and relics of the Handmaid of God; and from many images of the Blessed One depicted, increased with the passage of time, by which public veneration is shown; and from the feast day, in which the Hungarian people commemorate the memory of the Blessed One and show her their ardent devotion. It is made clear especially from the faculty granted by the Apostolic See to recite the office and celebrate Mass of that Blessed Virgin, first granted to the Diocese of Transylvania by Our Predecessor Pope Pius the Sixth in the year one thousand seven hundred eighty-nine; which faculty Pope Pius the Seventh extended to the entire Order of Preachers in the year one thousand eight hundred four; wherefore the feast of the Blessed One was celebrated for the first time by that same Order in this very City of Ours, in the Basilica of St. Mary above the Minerva, on the twenty-sixth day of the month of January, in the following year with great solemnity.

14 [17] Since therefore the requisite conditions for decreeing the canonization equivalent to that of the Blessed Margaret appeared to concur, according to the most wise norms of Our Predecessor, Pope Benedict the Fourteenth, Our beloved Justinian, Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church Serédi, Prince Primate of Hungary and Archbishop of Strigonia, in the name of all the Bishops of Hungary, the beloved Sons who govern the Hungarian Kingdom and the Princes, and almost the entire Hungarian nation, together with the Master General of the Order of Preachers, and innumerable Cardinals, Bishops and religious families of the Catholic world, presented to Us their most earnest petitions, urgently requesting that We deign from the fullness of Our Apostolic power to inscribe the Blessed Virgin Margaret in the roll of Saints. We therefore, receiving these petitions with favor, most willingly committed the matter to the Sacred Congregation of Rites to be fully examined and expedited, all the more so because We saw that these petitions corresponded most fully with Our own wish, which We desired to express from the heart at the magnificent Thirty-fourth International Eucharistic Congress celebrated at Buda, a most grateful memory of which will never depart from Our mind, We being at that time Legate a Latere of the late Pope Pius the Eleventh of happy memory.

15 [18] The Sacred Congregation of Rites therefore, through its Historical Section, has sifted all documents brought forward by Our beloved Son Benedict Lenzetti, of the Order of Preachers, General Postulator and most diligent Procurator of this Cause, according to the norms of critical science, with the care that was fitting, and has declared that they possess the force to prove the matter; and it has moreover most thoroughly investigated and confirmed the life of Blessed Margaret, and her fame for sanctity, for miracles, and for public and liturgical cult throughout the course of centuries. These things having been premised, in the meetings of the same Sacred Congregation on the thirteenth day of the month of July of this year, the venerable Brethren, Our Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, who preside over that Sacred Congregation, having heard the relation of Our beloved Son Raphael Charles, Cardinal of the same Holy Roman Church Rossi, Relator of the Case, in which he most fully demonstrated that it is established that Blessed Margaret lived in sanctity, that she exercised virtues in a heroic degree, of which especially charity, zeal for prayer, and the strictest penance shone forth, that she received cult both from the people from the day of her death even to our times, and also liturgical cult granted by the Apostolic See, and moreover that she is honored by the fame of miracles; having also heard the votes of the Officials of the same Sacred Congregation and the Prelates, all things having been maturely weighed and discussed, they deemed it proper to propose to Us that the prayers offered should be granted.

16 [19] We moreover on the twenty-third day following, when a relation of all these things was made to Us by the venerable Brother Our Charles, Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church Salotti, Bishop of Praeneste and Prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, deemed that the judgment of that Sacred Congregation should be received with willing mind. All things therefore having been maturely weighed, with certain knowledge, from the fullness of Our Apostolic power, by the tenor of these presents, We solemnly decree: that Blessed Margaret, a Virgin, from the royal family of the Arpadians, a Nun of the Order of St. Dominic, is a Saint and is to be inscribed in the catalogue of Saints, decreeing that in the Roman Martyrology her memory should be devoutly commemorated each year on her natal day, namely the eighteenth day of the month of January, among the Holy Virgins. Thus therefore, with this novena of this Saint consecrated by Us, We are confident that it will come to pass that She, offspring of the family of St. Stephen, the Proto-King and Apostle, so fruitful in so many and such great Saints, may resume her mission before God as a propitiatory victim, not for her most beloved country alone, which is deservedly held to be the bulwark of the Catholic faith and of the Christian name, but also for all nations still so fiercely in conflict with one another; and may obtain from the most pious Lord, Father of mercies and God of all consolation, tranquility and peace, firmly founded in the justice and charity of Christ, for the human race, withdrawn from the most sweet yoke of the Gospel, through her constant and powerful prayers. All things therefore which needed to be examined having been well weighed, with certain knowledge, from the fullness of Our Apostolic Authority, all and singular which We have said above We confirm, strengthen, again decree and command, and announce to the universal Catholic Church. Of these Decretal Letters, which We order to be expedited in duplicate original, We will that transcripts or excerpts, even printed ones, subscribed however by the hand of some Apostolic Notary and furnished with a seal, should have exactly the same force as these presents would have if exhibited or shown.

17 If anyone moreover shall presume to infringe these Letters of declaration, decree, mandate and will of Ours, or with rash attempt to act contrary to or assail them, let him know that he will incur the indignation of Almighty God and of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul.

18 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, in the year of the Lord one thousand nine hundred and forty-three, on the nineteenth day of the month of November, on the feast of St. Elizabeth, in the fifth year of Our Pontificate.

LITTERAE DECRETALES BEATA MARGARITA VIRGO, E REGIA ARPADENSIUM HUNGARICA FAMILIA, ORDINIS S. DOMINICI MONIALIS, SANCTORUM CATALOGO ADSCRIBITUR.

11 Proximae tandem mortis praescia, ardenter petiit et, sicut desideraverat, pluries recepit extrema Ecclesiae sacramenta, quibus angelica pietate susceptis, in festo Sanctae; Priscae, anno millesimo ducentésimo septuagesimo, lustris sex aetatis nondum expletis, diademati Christi innexa Margarita caelos intravit.

LETTERE DECRETALI.
