1And it was told Holofernes the general of the army of the Assyrians, that the children of Israel prepared themselves to resist, and had shut up the ways of the mountains.E fu riferito ad Oloferne capitano dell'esercito degli Assiri, come i figliuoli d'Israele si preparavano a far difesa, e come avean chiusi i passi delle montagne:AND it was told Holofernes the General of the warres of the Assyrians, that the children of Israel prepared them selues to resist, and had shut vp the wayes of the mountaynes,Nuntiatumque est Holoferni principi militiæ Assyriorum, quod filii Israël præpararent se ad resistendum, ac montium itinera conclusissent: 2And he was transported with exceeding great fury and indignation, and he called all the princes of Moab and the leaders of Ammon.E arse di sdegno, e di furore, e chiamò a se tutti i principi di Moab, e i capi degli Ammoniti, and with exceding furie he chafed in great anger, and called al the princes of Noab and dukes of Ammon,et furore nimio exarsit in iracundia magna, vocavitque omnes principes Moab et duces Ammon, 3And he said to them: Tell me what is this people that besetteth the mountains: or what are their cities, and of what sort, and how great: also what is their power, or what is their multitude: or who is the king over their warfare:E disse loro: Ditemi qual popolo sia questo, che a asserragliate le montagne, e quali, e come grandi sieno le loro città: e anche qualsiasi il loro valore, e se sieno in gran numero, e chi governi le loro milizie:and he sayd to them: Tel me what is this people which besetteth the mountaynes: or what, and of what sorte, and how great their cities are: also what their power is, or what is their multitude: or who is the king of their warfare:et dixit eis: Dicite mihi quis sit populus iste, qui montana obsidet: aut quæ, et quales, et quantæ sint civitates eorum: quæ etiam sit virtus eorum, aut quæ sit multitudo eorum, vel quis rex militiæ illorum: 4And why they above all that dwell in the east, have despised us, and have not come out to meet us, that they might receive us with peace?E per qual motivo tra tutti quelli che abitano verso l'oriente, costoro non hanno fatto conto di noi, e non ci sono venuti ad incontrare per accoglierci come amici?and why aboue al that dwel in the East, haue these contemned vs, and haue not come forth to meete vs, that they might receiue vs with peace?et quare præ omnibus qui habitant in oriente, isti contempserunt nos, et non exierunt obviam nobis ut susciperent nos cum pace ?

5Then Achior captain of all the children of Ammon answering, said; If thou vouchsafe, my lord, to hear, I will tell the truth in thy sight concerning this people, that dwelleth in the mountains, and there shall not a false word come out of my mouth. Then Achior captaine of al the children of Ammon answering, said: If thou wou•safe my Lord to heare, I wil tel the truth in thy sight of this people, which dwelleth in the mountaynes, and there shal not a false word come forth of my mouth. 6This people is of the offspring of the Chaldeans.Questo popolo è di stirpe Caldea:This people is of the progenie of the Chaldees.Populus iste ex progenie Chaldæorum est. 7They dwelt first in Mesopotamia, because they would not follow the gods of their fathers, who were in the land of the Chaldeans. The same dwelt first in Mesopotamia, because they would not folow the goddes of their fathets, which were in the land of the Chaldees.Hic primum in Mesopotamia habitavit, quoniam noluerunt sequi deos patrum suorum, qui erant in terra Chaldæorum. 8Wherefore forsaking the ceremonies of their fathers, which consisted in the worship of many gods,Or eglino, abbandonate le cerimonie de' padri loro, i quali aveano molti dei,Forsaking therfore the ceremonies of their fathers, which were in multitude of goddes,Deserentes itaque cæremonias patrum suorum, quæ in multitudine deorum erant, 9They worshipped one God of heaven, who also commanded them to depart from thence, and to dwell in Charan. And when there was a famine over all the land, they went down into Egypt, and there for four hundred years were so multiplied, that the army of them could not be numbered.Adorarono il solo Dio del cielo, il quale eziandio ordinò loro di partirsi di colà, e di abitare in Charan: ed essendo il paese invaso dalla fame, scesero in Egitto: e ivi nello spazio di quattro cent'anni moltiplicarono in tal guisa, che diventarono un esercito innumerabile.they worshipped one God of heauen, who also commanded them that they should depart from thence, and should dwel in Charan. And when there was famine ouer al the land, they went downe into Aegypt, and there for foure hundred yeares were so multiplied, that the host of them could not be numbred.unum Deum cæli coluerunt, qui et præcepit eis ut exirent inde et habitarent in Charan.

10And when the king of Egypt oppressed them, and made slaves of them to labour in clay and brick, in the building of his cities, they cried to their Lord, and he struck the whole land of Egypt with divers plagues. And when the king of Aegypt oppressed them, and in the buildinges of his cities had subdewed them in brick and claye, they cried to their Lord, and he stroke the whole Land of Aegypt with diuers plagues.Cumque gravaret eos rex Ægypti, atque in ædificationibus urbium suarum in luto et latere subjugasset eos, clamaverunt ad Dominum suum, et percussit totam terram Ægypti plagis variis. 11And when the Egyptians had cast them out from them, and the plague had ceased from them, and they had a mind to take them again, and bring them back to their service,E avendoli gli Egiziani discacciati da se, ed essendo cessati i flagelli e volendo di nuovo riprendergli, e ridurli di nuovo sotto il loro giogo,And when the Aegyptians had cast them out from them, and the plague had ceased from them, and they would take them againe, and cal them backe to their seruice,Cumque ejecissent eos Ægyptii a se, et cessasset plaga ab eis, et iterum eos vellent capere, et ad suum servitium revocare, 12The God of heaven opened the sea to them in their flight, so that the waters were made to stand firm as a wall on either side, and they walked through the bottom of the sea and passed it dry foot.Fuggendo questi, il Dio del cielo aperse ad essi il mare, talmente che da un lato, e dall'altro si rappreser le acque come muraglia, e questi a piè asciutto passarono per mezzo al fondo del mare.these fleeing away, the God of heauen opened the sea, so that the waters were consolidated as a wal, on either side, and they walking through the botome of the sea passed drie foote.fugientibus his, Deus cæli mare aperuit, ita ut hinc inde aquæ quasi murus solidarentur, et isti pede sicco fundum maris perambulando transirent. 13And when an innumerable army of the Egyptians pursued after them in that place, they were so overwhelmed with the waters, that there was not one left, to tell what had happened to posterity.E inseguendoli per la stessa via un esercito innumerabile di Egiziani, fu talmente ricoperto dalle acque, che neppur uno rimase, che raccontasse ai posteri l'avvenimento. In which place whiles an innumerable armie of the Aegyptians pursewed them, they were so ouerwhelmed with the waters, that there was not one remayning, to tel the fact to posteritie.

14After they came out of the Red Sea, they abode in the deserts of mount Sina, in which never man could dwell, or son of man rested.E quegli usciti dal mare Rosso occuparono i deserti del monte Sina, dove uomo non potè mai abitare, ne figliuolo d'uomo posarsi. Also being past the read sea, they possessed the desertes of Mount Sinai, in which neuer man could dwel, or sonne of man rested.Egressi vero mare Rubrum, deserta Sina montis occupaverunt, in quibus numquam homo habitare potuit, vel filius hominis requievit. 15There bitter fountains were made sweet for them to drink, and for forty years they received food from heaven. There bitter fountaynes were made sweete for them to drinke, and for fourtie yeares they receiued meate from heauen. 16Wheresoever they went in without bow and arrow, and without shield and sword, their God fought for them and overcame. Wheresoeuer they entered without bow and arrow, and without shielde and sword, their God fought for them, and ouercame. 17And there was no one that triumphed over this people, but when they departed from the worship of the Lord their God.E non v'ebbe chi potesse far male a questo popolo, se non quand'egli abbandonò il culto del Signore Dio suo.And there was not that did insult against this people, but when they departed from the worship of the Lord their God.Et non fuit qui insultaret populo isti, nisi quando recessit a cultu Domini Dei sui. 18But as often as beside their own God, they worshipped any other, they were given to spoil and to the sword, and to reproach. But as often as beside their owne God, they worshiped an other, they were geuen to praye, and into the sword, and to reproch. 19And as often as they were penitent for having revolted from the worship of their God, the God of heaven gave them power to resist.E ogni volta che fecero penitenza per avere tralasciato il culto del loro Dio, diede loro il Dio del cielo valore per difendersi. And as often as they were penitent for that they reuolted from the worship of their God, the God of heauen gaue them power to resist.Quotiescumque autem pœnituerunt se recessisse a cultura Dei sui, dedit eis Deus cæli virtutem resistendi.

20So they overthrew the king of the Chanaanites, and of the Jebusites, and of the Pherezites, and of the Hethites, and of the Hevites, and of the Amorrhites, and all the mighty ones in Hesebon, and they possessed their lands, and their cities:E alla fine debellarono i re Cananei, e gli Jebusei, e i Ferezei, e gli Hethei, e gli Hevei, e gli Amorrhei, e tutti i potentati di Hesebon, e s'impadronirono delle loro terre, e delle loro città:Finally the king of the Chananeites, and of Iebuseites, and of the Pherezeites, and of the Hetheites, and of the Heueites, and of the Amorrheites, and al the mightie in Hesebon they ouerthrew, and they possessed their landes, & their cities:Denique Chananæum regem, et Jebusæum, et Pherezæum, et Hethæum, et Hevæum, et Amorrhæum, et omnes potentes in Hesebon prostraverunt, et terras eorum et civitates eorum ipsi possederunt: 21And as long as they sinned not in the sight of their God, it was well with them: for their God hateth iniquity.E sino a tanto che non peccarono nel cospetto del loro Dio, ebbero felicità; perocchè il loro Dio ha in odio l'iniquità.and as long as they sinned not in the sight of their God, it was wel with them, for their God hateth iniquitie.et usque dum non peccarent in conspectu Dei sui, erant cum illis bona: Deus enim illorum odit iniquitatem. 22And even some years ago when they had revolted from the way which God had given them to walk therein, they were destroyed in battles by many nations and very many of them were led away captive into a strange land. For these yeares also past when they had reuolted from the way, which God had geuen them, that they should walke in it, they were destroyed in battels by manie nations, and verie manie of them were led captiue into a strange land.Nam et ante hos annos cum recessissent a via quam dederat illis Deus ut ambularent in ea, exterminati sunt præliis a multis nationibus, et plurimi eorum captivi abducti sunt in terram non suam. 23But of late returning to the Lord their God, from the different places wherein they were scattered, they are come together and are gone up into all these mountains, and possess Jerusalem again, where their holies are. But of late returning to the Lord their God, from the dispersion wherein they were dispersed, they are vnited & are come vp into al these mountaynes, and possesse Ierusalem againe where their Holies are.

24Now therefore, my lord, search if there be any iniquity of theirs in the sight of their God: let us go up to them, because their God will surely deliver them to thee, and they shall be brought under the yoke of thy power:Adesso adunque, signor mio procura di sapere, se eglino son rei di qualche peccato dinanzi al loro Dio; e andiam contro di essi; perocchè il loro Dio li darà nelle tue mani, e saran soggettati al giogo di tua possanza. Now therfore my Lord, search if there be any iniquitie of theirs in the sight of their God: and let vs goe vp to them, because their God deliuering wil deliuer them to thee, and they shal be subdewed vnder the yoke of thy power:Nunc ergo mi domine, perquire si est aliqua iniquitas eorum in conspectu Dei eorum: ascendamus ad illos, quoniam tradens tradet illos Deus eorum tibi, et subjugati erunt sub jugo potentiæ tuæ. 25But if there be no offence of this people in the sight of their God, we cannot resist them because their God will defend them: and we shall be a reproach to the whole earth.Ma se questo popolo non ha offeso il suo Dio, noi non potremo resistergli; perchè il Dio loro li difenderà, e noi saremo lo scherno di tutta la terra.but if there be no offence of this people before their God, we can not resist them, because their God wil defend them: and we shal be a reproche to the whole earth. 26And it came to pass, when Achior had ceased to speak these words, all the great men of Holofernes were angry, and they had a mind to kill him, saying to each other:Or finito che ebbe Achior di dir tali cose, tutti i grandi dell'esercito di Oloferne sdegnati pensavan di ucciderlo, e dicevano l'uno all'altro:And it came to passe, when Achior had ceased to speake these wordes, al the great men of Holofernes were angrie, and they thought to kil him, saying to each other:Et factum est, cum cessasset loqui Achior verba hæc, irati sunt omnes magnates Holofernis, et cogitabant interficere eum, dicentes ad alterutrum: 27Who is this, that saith the children of Israel can resist king Nabuchodonosor, and his armies, men unarmed, and without force, and without skill in the art of war?Chi è costui, che dice, che posson far fronte al re Nabuchodonosor, e a suoi eserciti i figliuoli d'Israele, uomini disarmati, e senza valore, e senza perizia dell'arte della guerra?who is this, that sayth the children of Israel can resist king Nabuchodonosor, and his armies, men vnarmed, and without force, and without skil of the feates of warre?

28That Achior therefore may know that he deceiveth us, let us go up into the mountains: and when the bravest of them shall be taken, then shall he with them be stabbed with the sword,Or affinchè Achior vegga com'egli c'inganna, andiam sopra que' monti, e quando avremo fatti prigionieri i più forti di quella gente, allora egli sarà trucidato insieme con essi:That Achior therfore may know that he deceiueth vs, let vs goe vp into the mountaynes: and when their mightie ones shal be taken, then shal he with them be strooken through with the sword:Ut ergo agnoscat Achior quoniam fallit nos, ascendamus in montana: et cum capti fuerint potentes eorum, tunc cum eisdem gladio transverberabitur: 29That every nation may know that Nabuchodonosor is god of the earth, and besides him there is no other.Affinchè sappian tutte le genti, come Nabuchodonosor è il Dio della terra, e altro non havvenne, fuori di lui.that euerie nation may know that Nabuchodonosor is God of the earth, and besides him there is none other.ut sciat omnis gens quoniam Nabuchodonosor deus terræ est, et præter ipsum alius non est.
