SAVIO, FEDELE. - Jesuit, historian, b. at Saluzzo on Jan. 31, 1848, d. at Rome on Feb. 18, 1916.

SAVOIA, HOUSE OF - Great seal in green wax, with counterseal in red wax of Count Edward who reigned from 1233 to 1329. The equestrian figure and the counterseal (EDUARD[us] COMES SABAVD[us]) bear the coat of arms (silver cross on a red field [in the seal the background appears latticed with lozenges on which crosses are reproduced]), assumed by Amedeo V the Great who reigned from 1285 to 1323. Having already entered the Order as a priest on Nov. 6, 1873, he first taught history at the College of the Visitation in the Principality of Monaco, then at the Social Institute of Turin; in the period 1893-94 he was appointed among the writers of Civiltà Cattolica; then, having returned to Turin, he devoted himself to teaching and the publication of his works, until in 1906 he was called to the chair of ecclesiastical history at the Gregorian University.

His numerous published historical works focus on the history of Italy and the history of the Church; among the former are to be remembered: Studi storici sul march. Guglielmo III di Monferrato ed i suoi figli (Torino 1865); I primi Conti di Savoia (ibid. 1887); Le famiglie della Rovere e Tana, parenti di s. Luigi Gonzaga (Pisa 1890); I conti di Ventimiglia nei secc. XI, XII e XIII (Genova 1894); among the latter, quite numerous, may be cited: Dell'origine dell'abbazia di S.
