Dialogues

Pope St Gregory I the Great († 604) · Dialogi de vita et miraculis patrum Italicorum · 593-594

English translation by P. W., Paris, 1608; re-edited with an introduction and notes by Edmund G. Gardner, London: Philip Lee Warner, 1911. Original text: Migne, Patrologia Latina 77, 149-430 (Books I, III, IV).

Gardner's introduction and notes and the footnotes (Bible references) are omitted. The Latin of Book II (the Life of St Benedict) is printed in PL 66, not in our Latin source, so Book II is English only; the Latin of Book III, chapter 37 (Sanctulus) is missing from the Latin source. In Book IV the 1608 English joins Latin chapters 36-37 as its chapter 36 and divides Latin chapter 38 into its chapters 37-38; the Latin is placed accordingly, and the English chapter numbers are used throughout.

  1. 1.0 The First Book
  2. 2.0 The Second Book
  3. 3.0 The Third Book
  4. 4.1 Chapter One; how carnal men give the less credit to those things which be eternal and spiritual; because they know not by experience, what they hear others to speak of.
