Encyclical on the celebration of the 700th anniversary of the death of St. Dominic

Encyclical of Pope Benedict XV ·

1 TO ORDINARIES, THOSE HAVING PEACE AND COMMUNION WITH THE APOSTOLIC SEE, CONCERNING THE CELEBRATION OF THE SEVEN HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF ST. DOMINIC. BENEDICT PP. XV VENERABLE BRETHREN, GREETINGS AND APOSTOLIC BLESSING

2 On this auspicious day, when seven hundred years have passed since that light of holiness, Dominic, departed from these miseries to the seats of the blessed, it falls to Us—who have long been devoted to his most zealous followers, especially since We undertook the governance of the Church of Bologna, which most religiously preserves his ashes—it falls to Us, We say, with great gladness to be able from this Apostolic Chair to exhort the Christian people to celebrate the memory of this most holy man: by which very act We not only satisfy Our own piety, but also seem to discharge a great office of gratitude toward both the lawgiver Father and his illustrious family.

3 For as he was truly a man of God and verily Dominic, so was he wholly devoted to the holy Church, which has in him a most invincible defender of the faith: and the Order of Preachers, which was founded by him, has ever been a splendid bulwark of the Roman Church. Wherefore not only did Dominic strengthen the temple in his own days, but he provided for the perpetuity of its defense: so that what Honorius III, ratifying the Order, decreed: "... considering that the brothers of thy order will be future champions of the faith and true lights of the world," he seems to have uttered as a prophet.

4 Indeed, as all know, Jesus Christ used no other instrument to spread the kingdom of God than the preaching of the Gospel, that is, the living voice of His heralds, who would spread the heavenly doctrine everywhere: Go ye and teach all nations. Preach the Gospel to every creature. Thus from the preaching of the Apostles, and especially of St. Paul, which was followed by the instruction and discipline of the Fathers and Doctors, it came to pass that the minds of men were illuminated by the light of truth and their souls conceived a love of all virtues. Using this very same method for the salvation of souls, Dominic proposed to himself and his followers to hand on to others what he had contemplated; and for this reason, together with the duty of cultivating poverty and innocence of life and religious discipline, he ordained that it should be holy and solemn for his Order to apply themselves diligently to the study of doctrine and to the preaching of truth.

5 Now in Dominican preaching these three things shone forth as distinctive marks: great solidity of doctrine, complete obedience and fidelity to the Apostolic See, and exceptional piety toward the Virgin Mother.

6 Although Dominic felt himself born early for preaching, yet he did not undertake this office until he had devoted much effort to philosophy and theology in the Athenaeum of Palencia, and had long been engaged in the study of the holy Fathers, and with them as guides and teachers had converted the riches of Sacred Scripture, especially of Paul, into his own substance and blood.

7 Eccli. L, 1.

8 Matth. XXVIII, 19.

9 Marc. XVI, 15.

10 How much his knowledge of divine things availed was perceived not long after, in his disputations against heretics; whom indeed, armed with all arts and fallacies to assail the dogmas of the Faith, yet it was wonderful how strenuously he would confute and refute them. This appeared especially at Toulouse, in a city which was then the chief seat and head of heresies, whither the most learned of his adversaries had gathered. It is recorded in memory that he, with his first companions, by work and word resisting the insolence of the heretics, not only checked their violence, but so softened their minds by eloquence and charity that he recalled a great multitude into the bosom of the Mother Church. God Himself was most present with him as he fought for the Faith; so that when, having accepted the condition which the heretics imposed that each should commit his book to the fire, the others were burned, his book alone remained untouched by the flame and inviolate. Thus by the virtue of Dominic, Europe was freed from the danger of the Albigensian heresy.

11 He commanded that his own sons be adorned with the praise of this solid doctrine. For scarcely had his Order been approved by the Apostolic See and confirmed to it by the noble name of Preachers, when he instituted that his religious houses be founded as close as possible to the most celebrated Universities of studies, so that both his students might more easily cultivate themselves in every kind of discipline, and more of those devoted to the good arts might join themselves to this new family. And so the Dominican institution from its very beginning displayed doctrine as its distinguished mark: and this has always been its proper work and duty to remedy the various evils of error and to spread the light of Christian faith, since nothing so much hinders eternal salvation as ignorance of truth and perversity of opinions. It is no wonder, therefore, if this new force of apostolate turned all eyes and minds to itself, which, since it was supported both by the Gospel and the teachings of the Fathers, was commended by an abundance of knowledge of every kind. And indeed God's own wisdom seemed to speak through the Dominican brethren, when in them there shone forth those great heralds and defenders of Christian wisdom, Hyacinthus the Pole, Peter Martyr, Vincent Ferrer, and likewise men outstanding in genius and most learned in the best disciplines, such as Albert the Great, such as Raymond of Peñafort, such as Thomas Aquinas, through whom especially, as a true alumnus of Dominic, God deigned to illuminate His Church. Wherefore this Order, since it has always been held in very great esteem for the magisterium of truth, has indeed obtained singular praise, when the Church declared the doctrine of Thomas to be her own, and gave that Doctor, honored by the singular praises of the Popes, as master and patron to Catholic schools.

12 But with this great zeal for retaining and protecting the Faith, the highest obedience to the Apostolic See was joined in Dominic. For thus we have received that he prostrated himself at the feet of Innocent III, devoting himself to the defense of the Roman Pontificate, and to that predecessor of Ours, on the following night, he appeared in a dream sustaining the inclined mass of the Lateran Basilica on his shoulders with his mind. — We also know, as history testifies, that when Dominic was forming his first students of discipline to Christian perfection, he thought of gathering from pious and religious layfolk a certain sacred militia, which would at once defend the rights of the Church and at once strongly resist heresies! From this source proceeded the Third Order of Dominicans, which indeed, by spreading the institution of a more perfect life among the secular, was going to provide the Church his mother with both great ornaments and great protections.

13 Handed down by the lawgiving Father, there came to his sons this inheritance of such conjunction with this Chair. Whenever, therefore, it has come to pass that through minds infatuated with errors the Church has labored either from the movements of peoples or from the injuries of princes, this Apostolic See has had in the Dominican brethren, who, undertaking the patronage both of truth and of justice, a most opportune aid to itself for preserving the splendor of its authority. For who does not know how gloriously that Dominican virgin, Catherine of Siena, conducted herself in this regard, who, urged by the charity of Jesus Christ, having overcome incredible difficulties, persuaded the Supreme Pontiff—which no one else had been able to do—to return to his Roman See after an interval of seventy years; and who then, while the Western Church was being torn by a dire schism, retained a great number of Christian faithful in faith and obedience to the legitimate Pontiff?

14 And, to pass over other matters, it is not to be overlooked that from the Dominican brethren there have arisen four Roman Pontiffs of great name; of whom the last, St. Pius V, has merited immortally well of Christian and civil affairs; who, with great insistence and exhortation, having joined to himself the arms of Catholic princes in alliance, at the Echinades islands forever routed the forces of the Turks, under the auspices and aid of the Virgin Mother of God, whom he therefore commanded to be hailed as the Help of Christians.

15 In this it is also clearly shown what we have said exists as a third characteristic in the preaching of the Dominicans: most zealous devotion toward the great Mother of God! The Pontiff is said to have divinely known of the Naupactian victory at that very moment when pious confraternities throughout the Catholic world were imploring Mary by the formula of the most holy Rosary, which the Parent of Preachers himself had discovered and thereafter took care to propagate far and wide through his disciples. For since Dominic cherished the most blessed Virgin in the place of a mother, trusting especially in her patronage, he undertook to advance the cause of the Faith. Therefore, against the Albigensian heretics, who pursued with every insult not only other articles of the Faith but also the divine motherhood and virginity of Mary, he, defending the sanctity of their doctrines with all his strength, invoked the aid of the Virgin Mother herself, employing most often these words: "Deign to allow me to praise thee, O sacred Virgin; give me strength against thy enemies." How graciously, however, the Queen of Heaven embraced her most pious servant is easily gathered from this, that she used his ministry to teach the most holy Rosary to the Church, the Spouse of her Son: that prayer, namely, which, being performed at once with voice and mind—contemplating the principal mysteries of religion, while the Lord's Prayer is repeated fifteen times and as many decades of the Hail Mary—is most suited to nourish and kindle piety and all virtue among the common people. With good reason, therefore, Dominic commanded his disciples that, in delivering God's word to peoples, they should often and earnestly apply themselves to impressing this form of prayer upon the minds of their hearers, of whose proven usefulness he was well aware. For he well knew that Mary, on the one hand, has such authority with the divine Son that whatever graces He bestows upon men, she always administers and dispenses them, and on the other hand is of such benign and merciful nature that, since she is accustomed to come to the aid of the wretched of her own accord, she cannot possibly refuse help to those who ask for it. Thus she, whom the Church is accustomed to greet as the mother of grace and mother of mercy, has always been experienced as such; for which reason the Roman Pontiffs have never up to now omitted any opportunity to extol the Marian Rosary with the highest praise and to enrich it with the gifts of Apostolic Indulgences.

16 Now indeed the Dominican institute—as you yourselves understand, venerable brethren—is no less opportune at this time than in the age of its Founder. How many there are today who, destitute of the bread of life, that is, of heavenly doctrine, are consumed as if by famine; how many, deceived by the appearance of truth, are turned away from the Faith by great variety of errors: in order that priests may suitably provide for the needs of all these by ministering the word of God, how greatly it is necessary that they be both desirous of the salvation of others and truly instructed in solid knowledge of divine things. How many also ungrateful and forgetful children of the Church, turned away from Jesus Christ's Vicar either by ignorance of matters or by ill will, must be brought back to the bosom of their common Parent. And to heal these and all other evils of this age, how greatly do we need the maternal patronage of Mary!

17 The Dominican confraternity thus has for itself an almost immense field in which to contend most usefully for the common salvation. Wherefore we earnestly exhort all, as many as belong to this discipline, that in these solemn centennial celebrations they renew their minds in some way to the example of their most holy Founder, and prove themselves daily worthy of such a father. In this matter, to be sure, his sons of the First Order should take the lead, as is fitting, and they will thereafter apply themselves with greater eagerness to such preaching of the divine word, whereby in men, together with obedience toward the successor of blessed Peter and piety toward the Virgin Mother, knowledge and protection of truth may grow. But the Church also expects much usefulness from the lay Dominican confraternity members, if indeed they have striven more diligently to accommodate themselves to the spirit of their Patriarch, namely by instructing the rude and ignorant of the Christian people in the precepts of Christian doctrine. In order that many such may be constant and assiduous, we desire and wish: for the matter at hand is of the greatest moment for the good of souls. Finally, we wish this to be of particular concern to all the disciples of Father Dominic, that the Christian people everywhere become accustomed to the Marian Rosary; which indeed we, following in the footsteps of our predecessors, especially of Leo XIII of happy memory, have on occasion exhorted, and we exhort most earnestly in these harsh times: and if this shall happily come to pass, we shall consider the celebration of this centennial commemoration to have been sufficiently fruitful. As a pledge meanwhile of divine favors and a witness of our benevolence, we most lovingly impart the Apostolic Blessing to you, venerable brethren, and to your clergy and people in the Lord.

18 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, on 29 June, on the feast of the Apostles Princes, in the year 1921, the seventh year of our Pontificate.

1 ORDINARIOS, PACEM ET COMMUNIONEM CUM APOSTOLICA SEDE HABENTESI DE DCC NATALI SANCTI DOMINICI CELEBRANDO. BENEDICTUS PP.

5 Iam vero in dominicana praedicatione haec tria, tamquam insignia, eluxerunt : magna quaedam doctrinae soliditas, plenum fidelitatis erga Sedem Apostolicam obsequium, pietas in Virginem Matrem eximia.

6 Quamvis enim mature se Dominicus natum sentiret ad praedicandum, tamen non id muneris suscepit, nisi cum in Palentino Athenaeo philosophiae ac theologiae multam dedisset operam, diuque in sanctorum Patrum studio versatus, iis ducibus atque magistris, Scripturae sacrae divitias, praecipueque Pauli, in suum tamquam succum et sanguinem convertisset.

8 Matth. XXVIII, Í9.

9 Marc. XVI, 15.

Iure igitur suis alumnis praecepit Dominicus ut, Dei verbum populis tradentes, in hac orandi forma audientium animis inculcanda saepe studioseque versarentur, cuius exploratissimam haberet utilitatem.

1 AI VESCOVI ORDINARI, CHE HANNO PACE E COMUNIONE CON LA SEDE APOSTOLICA, SULLA CELEBRAZIONE DEL SETTIMO CENTENARIO DELLA NASCITA DI SAN DOMENICO. BENEDETTO PP. XV VENERABILI FRATELLI, SALUTE E BENEDIZIONE APOSTOLICA
