III.
EPISTOLA ENCYCLICA SSmi D. N. Leonis XIII.
7 Pertanto un grandissimo presidio dell'unità cristiana è stato divinamente offerto in Maria. Il quale, sebbene non sia lecito meritarlo con un solo modo di preghiera, tuttavia riteniamo che ciò si compia ottimamente e copiosissimamente mediante l'istituto del Rosario. Abbiamo avvertito altrove che non ultimo in esso è il vantaggio che il cristiano abbia a portata di mano e con facilità il modo di alimentare la sua fede e di proteggersi dall'ignoranza e dal pericolo dell'errore: il che rendono manifesto le stesse origini del Rosario. Ora è evidente quanto la fede che in tal modo si esercita, sia mediante le preghiere ripetute con la voce, sia soprattutto contemplando con la mente i misteri, sia riferita a Maria. Infatti ogni volta che dinanzi a lei devotamente volgiamo la corona sacra secondo il rito, così commemorando e ripetendo l'ammirabile opera della nostra salvezza, quasi vedessimo la cosa presente, contempliamo chiaramente quella per la cui serie e effetto ella divenne insieme Madre di Dio e madre nostra. L'una e l'altra grandezza di dignità, il frutto dell'uno e dell'altro ministero appaiono in viva luce, se alcuno consideri religiosamente Maria che associa al Figlio i misteri della gioia, del dolore, della gloria. Di qui consegue certamente che l'animo si infiammi di sentimento di amore grato verso di lei, e, tenendo tutte le cose cadoche al di sotto di sé, si sforzi con fermo proposito di mostrarsi degno di una madre così grande e dei suoi benefici. Poiché poi con questa frequente e fedele commemorazione dei misteri ella non può non esserne dolcissimamente commossa, e la misericordia verso gli uomini, di gran lunga la migliore di tutte le madri, non può non essere mossa, per questo abbiamo detto che la preghiera del Rosario sarebbe opportunissima affinché presso di lei preghiamo per la causa dei fratelli dissidenti. Ciò appartiene propriamente all'ufficio della sua maternità spirituale. Infatti coloro che sono di Cristo, Maria non li ha partorito né poteva partorilì se non in un'unica fede e in un unico amore: forse che Cristo è diviso? 6 e dobbiamo tutti vivere la vita di Cristo, affinché in un unico medesimo corpo portiamo frutto a Dio 7. Quanti dunque la calamità delle cose funeste ha allontanato da questa unità, è necessario che la medesima madre, che da Dio è stata accresciuta con perpetua fecondità della santa prole, li partorisca di nuovo in certo modo a Cristo. Questo è appunto ciò che ella desidera ardentemente di compiere; e, ornata da noi di corone di preghiera a lei gratissima, otterrà abbondantemente per essi gli aiuti dello Spirito vivificante. Che almeno coloro che non ricusino di assecondare la volontà della madre misericordiosa, e consultando la loro salvezza, ascoltino colei che dolcissimamente li invita: Figlioli miei, che di nuovo partorisco, finché Cristo non sia formato in voi 8. — Riconosciuta tale virtù mariale del Rosario, alcuni dei Nostri predecessori ebbero singolari cure affinché esso si diffondesse per le nazioni orientali. Soprattutto Eugenio IV, con la costituzione Advesperascente, data nell'anno MCCCCXXXIX, poi Innocenzo XII e Clemente XI; per la cui autorità furono pure attribuiti ampi privilegi all'Ordine dei Predicatori, a questo scopo. Né mancarono i frutti desiderati. Per l'impegno sollecito dei confratelli del medesimo Ordine; e questi sussistono testimoniati da molteplice e chiara memoria: sebbene la durata e l'avversità dei tempi abbiano poi non poco ostacolato il progresso della cosa. In questa età però il medesimo ardore di coltivare il Rosario, che all'inizio abbiamo lodato come suscitato, similmente per quelle regioni si diffonde negli animi di molti. Il che certamente quanto corrisponde ai Nostri propositi, tanto speriamo che sarà utilissimo al compimento dei voti. — Si unisce a questa speranza un fatto lieto, che riguarda egualmente l'Oriente e l'Occidente, e pienamente si accorda con i medesimi voti. Quello contempliamo, Venerabili Fratelli, che nel nobilissimo Convegno eucaristico, celebrato a Gerusalemme, ha avuto inizio, cioè la costruzione di un tempio in onore della Regina santissima del Rosario;

EPISTOLA ENCYCLICA SSmi D. N. Leonis Xlii.
— Huc propria quaedam accedit causa quamobrem nobis, dissentientium nationum gratia comprecantibus, annuat Maria indulgentias : egregia scilicet quae ipsam fuerunt earum merita, in primisque orientalium.
7 Itaque permagnum unitatis christianae praesidium divinitus oblatum est in Maria. Quod quidem, etsi non uno precationis modo demereri licet, attamen instituto Rosarii optime id fieri uberrimeque arbitramur. Monuimus alias, non ultimum in ipso emolumentum inesse, ut prompta ratione et facili habeat christianus homo, quo fidem suam alat et ab ignorantia tutetur errorisve periculo : id quod vel ipsae Rosarii origines faciunt apertum. Iamvero huiusmodi quae exercetur fides, sive precibus voce iterandis, sive potissimum contemplandis mente mysteriis, palam est quam prope ad Mariam referatur. Nam quoties ante illam supplices coronam sacram rite versamus, sic nostrae salutis admirabile opus commemorando repetimus, ut, quasi praesenti re, ea explicata contueamur, quorum serie et effectu extitit illa simul Mater Dei, simul mater nostra. Utriusque magnitudo dignitatis, utriusque ministerii fructus vivo in lumine apparent, si quis Mariam religiose consideret mysteria gaudii, doloris, gloriae cum Filio sociantem. Inde profecto consequitur ut grati adversus illam amoris sensu animus exardescat, atque caduca omnia infra sé habens, forti conetur proposito dignum se matre tanta beneflciisque eius probare. Hac autem ipsa mysteriorum crebra fìdelique recordatione quum ea non possit non iucundissime affici, et misericordia in homines, longe omnium matrum optima, non commoveri, idcirco diximus Rosarii precem peropportunam fore, ut fratrum causam dissidentium apud ipsam oremus. Ad spiritualis maternitatis eius officium proprie id attinet. Nam qui Christi sunt, eo Maria non peperit nec parere poterat, nisi in una fide unoque amore: numquid enim divisus est Christus ? 6 debemusque una omnes vitam Christi vivere, ut in uno eodemque corpore fructificemus Deo 7. Quotquot igitur ab ista unitate calamitas rerum funesta abduxit, illos oportet ut eadem mater, quae perpetua sanctae prolis fecunditate a Deo aucta est, rursus Christo quodammodo pariat. Hoc plane est quod ipsa praestare vehementer optat; sertisque donata a nobis acceptissimae precis, auxilia vivificantis Spiritus abunde illis impetrabit. Qui utinam miserentis matris voluntati obsecundare ne renuant, suaeque consulentes saluti, boni audiant blandissime invitantem : Filioli mei, quos iterum parturio, donec formetur Christus in vobis 8. — Tali marialis Rosarii virtute perspecta, nonnulli fuere decessores Nostri qui singulares quasdam curas eo converterunt, ut per orientales nationes dilataretur. In primis Eugenius IV, constitutione Advesperascente, anno data MCCCCXXXIX, tum Innocentius XII et Clemens XI; quorum auctoritate item privilegia ampla Ordini Praedicatorum, eius rei gratia, sunt attributa. Neque fructus desiderati sunt. Sodalium eiusdem Ordinis contendente sollertia; iique extant multiplici et clara memoria testati: quamquam rei progressibus diuturnitas et adversitas temporum non parum deinde offecit. Hac vero aetate idem Rosarii colendi ardor quem initio excitatum laudavimus, similiter per eas regiones animis multorum incessu Quod sane Nostris quantum respondet inceptis, tantum votis explendis perutile futurum speramus. — Coniungitur cum hac spe laetabile quoddam factum, aeque Orientem attingens atque Occidentem, eisdemque plane congruens votis. Illud spectamus propositum, Venerabiles Fratres, quod in pernobili Conventu eucharistico, Hierosolymis acto, initium duxit, templi videlicet exaedificandi in honorem Reginae sacratissimi Rosarii;
8 idque Pa trae in Achaia, non procul a locis, ubi olim nomen christianum, ea auspice, eluxit.

III. And therefore the Priest in performing the funeral rites for the deceased, just as in the celebration of marriages, is not obliged to apply the Mass for the same deceased or for the spouses if he has not received a stipend for that purpose.
ENCYCLICAL LETTER of His Holiness Leo XIII. On the Rosary of Mary.
2 It is fitting and proper to celebrate with ever greater praise and to implore with more fervent confidence the Virgin Mother of God, the mighty and most merciful Helper of Christian people. Indeed, the grounds for confidence and praise are increased by that varied abundance of benefits which through her flows more abundantly each day into the common good far and wide. Nor are the offices of such beneficence lacking on the part of Catholics with most devoted will: since, if ever at any other time, certainly in these rather bitter times for religion, it is permitted to see love and devotion toward the most blessed Virgin kindled and inflamed in every rank and order. Of this there is clear testimony in the sodalities restored and multiplied everywhere under her protection; in the splendid churches dedicated to her august name; in pilgrimages undertaken to her more sacred temples with most devout frequency; in assemblies convoked to deliberate upon the increase of her glory; and in other things of this kind, which are in themselves excellent and of good omen for the future. And it is a singular matter and most pleasant to Our remembrance, how among the manifold forms of the same piety, the ROSARY OF MARY, that most excellent form of prayer, has come to prevail more widely in opinion and practice. This, We say, is pleasing to Us, who, if We have devoted no small part of Our cares to promoting the institution of the Rosary, clearly see how graciously the Queen of heaven, entreated, has been favorable to Our wishes: and We trust that she will thus be favorable to Us, that she may be willing to lighten the cares and afflictions which the coming days will bring. — But especially for the enlargement of the kingdom of Christ do We expect more abundant assistance from the power of the Rosary. The counsels which We are urging more earnestly at present, concerning the reconciliation of nations separated from the Church, We have declared more than once: and at the same time We have professed that the happiness of the outcome must be sought chiefly by praying and beseeching the divine Majesty. This also We testified not long ago, when during the solemn celebration of sacred Pentecost, We recommended that special prayers be offered to the divine Spirit for this cause: and to this recommendation great alacrity was shown everywhere in obedience. But truly, in view of the gravity of this most difficult matter, and in view of the constancy which all virtue demands, the exhortation of the Apostle is fitly applied: Persevere in prayer 1; all the more so because such perseverance in prayer seems to receive a sweeter incentive from the good beginnings of the undertakings themselves. Therefore, in the coming month of October, Venerable Brethren, nothing surely will be more useful to the purpose, nor more acceptable to Us, than if throughout the whole month you and your peoples, with the prayer of the Rosary and the customary observances, persevere with Us before the Virgin Mother in most dutiful supplication. Indeed, the reasons are illustrious why We commit Our counsels and wishes to her protection with the greatest hope.
3 The mystery of Christ's surpassing charity towards us is also made abundantly clear from this, that dying, He willed His Mother to be left to John the disciple as a mother, in a testament worthy of remembrance: Behold thy son. But in John, as the Church has perpetually understood, Christ designated the person of the human race, especially of those who would cleave to Him by faith: in which sense St. Anselm of Canterbury: What, he says, can be esteemed more worthy than that thou, Virgin, shouldst be the mother of those whose Christ deigns to be father and brother 2? The parts of this singular office and laborious charge she undertook and fulfilled with magnanimity, with auspices consecrated in the Cenacle. The first fruits of the Christian people she then marvelously fostered by the holiness of her example, the authority of her counsel, the sweetness of her comfort, the efficacy of her holy prayers; truly indeed the mother of the Church and teacher and queen of the Apostles, to whom she also gave of the divine oracles which she kept in her heart. Moreover, it can scarcely be said how great an increase of power and virtue then accrued, when to the pinnacle of heavenly glory, which befitted her dignity and the brightness of her merits, she was assumed beside her Son. For thence, by divine counsel, she began thus to watch over the Church, thus to be present to us and favor us as a mother, so that she who had been the handmaid in accomplishing the sacrament of human redemption, should likewise be the handmaid in deriving grace from it throughout all time, being permitted an almost immense power. Hence it is that Christian souls, as if drawn by a native impulse, turn to Mary; with her they confidently share their counsels and works, their sorrows and joys; and they commend themselves and all that is theirs to her care and goodness after the manner of children. Hence it is most rightly that ample praises have been offered to her in every nation and every rite, increasing by the suffrage of the centuries: among many, calling her our lady, our mediatrix, herself the reparatrix of the whole world (1), herself the reconciler of the gifts of God (2). — And since the foundation and head of the gifts of God, by which man is perfected above the order of nature unto eternal things, is faith, to attain this and to cultivate it salutarily, there is justly extolled a certain mysterious action of hers, which brought forth the Author of faith, and by which she was blessed to be called: There is none, O most holy one, who is filled with the knowledge of God except through thee; there is none who is saved except through thee, O Mother of God; none who obtains a gift from mercy except through thee (3). Nor will he seem to go too far who affirms that it was chiefly by her guidance and help that the wisdom and institutions of the Gospel, through immense hardships and offenses, spread with such swift progress to the whole of nations, introducing everywhere a new order of justice and peace. This indeed moved the heart and prayer of St. Cyril of Alexandria, addressing the Virgin thus: Through thee the Apostles proclaimed salvation to the nations...; through thee the precious Cross is celebrated throughout the whole world and adored... ; through thee demons are put to flight, and man himself is recalled to heaven; through thee all creation, held fast in the error of idols, was converted to the knowledge of truth; through thee faithful men attained to holy baptism, and churches were founded everywhere among the nations (4). — Nay, even the scepter of orthodox faith, as the same doctor praised it (5), she upheld and was able to maintain: which was her unceasing care, that the Catholic faith should remain firm in peoples and vigorous and fruitful in its integrity. There are many and sufficiently well-known monuments of this, and sometimes declared in wondrous ways. In those times and places especially when it was to be lamented that faith had grown weak through negligence or was assailed by the nefarious plague of errors, the great Virgin's succoring kindness appeared present. And moved and strengthened by her, there arose men renowned for holiness and apostolic spirit, who would check the attempts of the wicked, who would turn and inflame souls to the piety of Christian life. Dominic Guzman is one among many, who labored in both respects, trusting happily in the aid of the Marian Rosary. Nor will it be doubtful to anyone how much redounds to the same Mother of God from the merits of the venerable Fathers and Doctors of the Church
4 who gave such distinguished labor to defending or illustrating Catholic truth. From her, namely, the Seat of divine wisdom, they themselves confess with grateful heart that a supply of the best counsel flowed to them in their writings; from her therefore, not from themselves, that the wickedness of errors was overcome. Finally, both Princes and Roman Pontiffs, guardians and defenders of the faith, some in waging sacred wars, others in issuing solemn decrees, invoked the name of the divine Mother, and never failed to find her all-powerful and propitious. — Wherefore not less truly than splendidly do the Church and the Fathers congratulate Mary: Hail, mouth ever speaking of the Apostles, stable firmament of Faith, unmoved bulwark of the Church (1); Hail, through whom we are enrolled among the citizens of the one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church (2); Hail, fountain divinely springing forth, from which the rivers of divine wisdom, flowing in the purest and clearest waters of orthodoxy, dispel the host of errors (3); Rejoice, because thou alone hast destroyed all heresies in the whole world (4).
5 This which was and is the great part of the exalted Virgin in the course, in the battles, in the triumphs of the Catholic faith, makes the divine counsel concerning her more illustrious, and ought to raise all good men to great hope for those things which are now in common prayers. — Mary must be trusted, Mary must be entreated! For in order that among Christian nations one profession of faith may hold minds in accord, one bond of perfect charity may unite wills, this new and much-desired ornament of Religion, truly by her power she will be able to bring to completion. What indeed would she not wish to effect, so that the nations, for whose greatest union His Only-Begotten Son most earnestly besought the Father, and whom through one baptism He Himself called to the same inheritance of salvation, purchased at immense price, all might strive together unanimously in that admirable light of His? What would she not wish to expend of her goodness and providence, both that the Church, the Spouse of Christ, might be solaced from the long labors in this matter, and that she might perfect the good of unity in the Christian family, which is the fruit of her remarkable motherhood? — And the auspice of a thing not long in coming seems to be confirmed by that opinion and confidence which grows warm in the hearts of the pious, namely that Mary will be a happy bond, by whose firm and gentle force all those everywhere, whosoever love Christ, might become one people of brothers, "obedient to His Vicar on earth, the Roman Pontiff, as to a common Father. At this point the mind naturally flies through the annals of the Church to the most noble examples of ancient unity, and dwells more willingly in the memory of the great Council of Ephesus. For the supreme agreement of faith and equal communion of sacred things which held East and West at that time, there indeed seemed to have prevailed and shone forth with a certain singular stability and glory; when the Fathers, lawfully sanctioning the dogma, that the holy Virgin is the Mother of God, the announcement of this fact flowing from that most religious city in exultation, filled the whole Christian world with one and the same most celebrated joy. — By how many causes, therefore, is confidence in the things sought sustained and grows in the mighty and most benign Virgin, by so many, as it were, goads ought the zeal which we urge upon Catholics in beseeching her to be sharpened. Let them for their part consider how honorable this is and how fruitful for themselves, how certainly it will be acceptable and pleasing to that same Virgin. For, as they are partakers of the unity of faith, thus they declare, that they will make much of the force of this benefit as is fitting, and that they wish to guard it more sacredly. Nor truly can they show a more excellent manner of proving a brotherly spirit toward those in disagreement, than if they earnestly come to their aid for the recovery of that one greatest good. This truly Christian affection of brotherhood, flourishing in all the memory of the Church, has been accustomed to seek its principal strength from the Mother of God, as the best patroness of peace and unity. St. Germanus of Constantinople besought her with these words: Remember the Christians, who are thy servants: commend the prayers of all, help the hopes of all; thou solidify the faith, thou join the churches into one 3. Thus still is the supplication of the Greeks to her: O most pure one, to whom it is given to approach thy Son with no fear of repulse, beseech him from us, O most holy one, that he may impart peace to the world and inspire the same mind in all churches: and we shall all magnify thee 4. — To this there is added a certain proper cause why Mary should grant us indulgences, interceding for the sake of the nations in disagreement: namely the distinguished merits which were theirs, and especially those of the Orientals. Much is owed to them indeed for the propagation and increase of her veneration:
6 they are memorable asserters and defenders of her dignity, most weighty in power and writings; praisers distinguished by ardor and sweetness of eloquence; most beloved intercessors with God 5, having imitated the most pure Virgin by example, having pursued her with munificence; temples and basilicas raised up with royal worship. — I wish to add one thing which is not beside the point, and is glorious for the holy Mother of God. No one is ignorant that her august images from the East, through various circumstances of times, have been brought in great numbers to the West and especially to Italy and to this City: which the fathers received with the highest reverence and honored magnificently, and which the emulous descendants strive to hold with most sacred piety. In this deed the mind is pleased to recognize a certain nod and grace of the most zealous mother. For it seems to be signified that those images stand among us just as witnesses of the times, in which the Christian family was entirely one everywhere and held together, and as cherished pledges of a common inheritance: for this reason by the sight of these same images, as if the Virgin herself were admonishing, minds are also invited to this, that they piously remember those whom the Catholic Church most lovingly recalls to the ancient harmony and joy in her embrace.
7 Therefore a very great safeguard of Christian unity has been divinely offered in Mary. Which indeed, although it is permitted to merit it in not one manner of prayer, nevertheless we judge that it is done most excellently and most abundantly by the institution of the Rosary. We have warned elsewhere that no small benefit exists in it, so that the Christian man may have a ready and easy means by which to nourish his faith and to protect himself from ignorance and the danger of error: which the very origins of the Rosary make manifest. Now indeed such faith as is exercised, whether by prayers repeated with the voice, or chiefly by contemplating mysteries with the mind, is plainly referred to Mary. For as often as we devoutly turn the sacred crown before her in the proper manner, thus by commemorating the admirable work of our salvation we repeat it, so that, as if by a present reality, we behold it unfolded, by whose series and effect she came to be at once Mother of God, at once our mother. The magnitude of both her dignity, the fruit of both her ministry appear in living light, if one religiously considers Mary uniting the mysteries of joy, sorrow, and glory with her Son. From this there follows assuredly that the mind burns with a sense of grateful love toward her, and, holding all transitory things beneath itself, strives with firm purpose to show itself worthy of so great a mother and of her benefits. But by this very frequent and faithful remembrance of the mysteries, since she cannot but be most pleasantly affected by them, and by mercy toward men, far the best of all mothers, not be moved, therefore we have said that the prayer of the Rosary would be most opportune, so that we might beseech her for the cause of the brethren who are divided. This properly pertains to the office of her spiritual motherhood. For those who are Christ's, Mary did not bear, nor could she bear, except in one faith and one love: for is Christ divided? 6 and we ought all to live the life of Christ in one and the same way, so that we may bear fruit to God in one and the same body. 7 As many therefore as the calamitous misfortune of things has drawn away from this unity, it is fitting that the same mother, who has been increased by God with perpetual fruitfulness of holy offspring, should in a certain way bear them again to Christ. This plainly is what she herself desires most earnestly to accomplish; and being presented with garlands of prayer most acceptable to her, she will abundantly obtain for them the aids of the life-giving Spirit. Would that those who are able to comply with the will of the merciful mother do not refuse, and, consulting their own salvation, hear her most sweetly inviting: My little children, whom I am again bringing forth, until Christ be formed in you. 8 — Such marvelous power of the Marian Rosary being perceived, some of our predecessors were those who directed singular cares toward it, so that it might be spread through the Eastern nations. Especially Eugene IV, by the constitution Advesperascente, given in the year 1439, then Innocent XII and Clement XI; by whose authority likewise ample privileges were attributed to the Order of Preachers for this purpose. Nor were the desired fruits lacking. By the striving diligence of the members of the same Order; and these exist testified by manifold and clear memory: although the progress of the matter was not a little hindered by the length of time and the adversity of the times. But in this age the same ardor for cultivating the Rosary, which we have praised as excited at the beginning, similarly proceeds through those regions in the minds of many. Which indeed corresponds to our undertakings as much as we hope it will be most useful for fulfilling the wishes. — Joined with this hope is a certain joyful event, equally touching the East and the West, and plainly agreeing with the same wishes. That purpose we regard, Venerable Brethren, which took its beginning in the most noble Eucharistic Congress held at Jerusalem, namely the building of a temple in honor of the Queen of the most holy Rosary;
8 and that in Patrae in Achaia, not far from the places where once the Christian name shone forth under her auspices. For indeed from the Council which has been established for promoting and caring for the work, with our approval, we have received most willingly, already many of you, being asked, have submitted a common contribution with all diligence toward it; and have also promised that they will hereafter be similarly present until the completion of the work. From which it is already sufficiently provided, so that it is permitted to undertake the construction which is suited to the magnitude of the matter: and power has been made by us so that soon the auspicial stone of the temple may be laid with solemn ceremonies. The temple will stand, in the name of the Christian people, a monument of perpetual gratitude to the Helper and heavenly Mother: who there will be invoked assiduously both in the Latin and Greek rite, so that she may wish to heap new benefits upon the old, ever more present.
9 Now, Venerable Brethren, Our exhortation returns to that point from which it set out. Come then, shepherds and all the flock, with full confidence to the protection of the great Virgin, especially in the coming month. Let them not cease to address her together with praise, prayer, and vows, and to beseech the Mother of God and our Mother: Show thyself to be a Mother! May her maternal clemency deign to keep her whole family safe from all danger, to lead it to the prosperity of the true faith, and especially to establish it in holy unity. May she look with benevolence upon Catholics of every nation; and may she make them more eager and steadfast, bound together by the bonds of charity among themselves, to uphold the honor of religion, in which are contained the greatest goods of the state. May she look most benevolently also upon those who are separated, great and illustrious nations, noble souls mindful of Christian duty: may she reconcile in them the most salutary desires and, having reconciled them, foster them and bring them to completion. For those who are separated in the East, may avail them that religion toward her, so abundant and so professed, and so many glorious deeds in her honor and of their ancestors. For those who are separated in the West, may avail them the memory of most beneficent patronage, by which she both proved and rewarded the piety toward her of all orders, throughout many ages most eminent. For both and all others, wherever they are, may avail them the one supplicant voice of Catholic nations, and may Our voice avail, crying out to the last breath: Show thyself to be a Mother! Meanwhile, as a pledge of divine gifts and a witness of Our benevolence, We most lovingly impart the Apostolic blessing to each of you and to your clergy and people.
