DURA EUROPOS (Gr. Δοῦρα Εὐρώπος). — On the right bank of the Euphrates, midway between Baghdad and Aleppo, on a rocky plateau where the site is today as-Sālihijjah, there stood in pre-Seleucid times an ancient Assyrian fortress bearing the Semitic name of D. Around 280 B.C. a satrap named Nicanore, who had been a general of Alexander the Great, founded a colony there.
