Ieremie in prison sendeth Baruch by Gods commandment, to read a booke of comminations before the people: 7. exhorting them to repent: 9. which being read in a porch of the Temple, 11. Micheas reporteth it to the Nobles in the court, 14. whither Baruch being called readeth the same before them: 20. they informe the king: 21. who hearing part therof, causeth the booke to be burned: 26. and commandeth to apprehend Baruch, and Ieremie. 27. The booke is write againe by them with addition of more.
1And it came to pass in the fourth year of Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda, that this word came to Jeremias by the Lord, saying:L'anno quarto di Joachim figliuolo di Giosia, re di Giuda, il Signore parlò così a Geremia, e disse:AND it came to passe in the fourth yeare of Ioakim, the sonne of Iosias king of Iuda: this word was made to Ieremie from our Lord, saying:Et factum est in anno quarto Joakim filii Josiæ regis Juda, factum est verbum hoc ad Jeremiam a Domino, dicens: 2Take thee a roll of a book, and thou shalt write in it all the words that I have spoken to thee against Israel and Juda, and against all the nations from the day that I spoke to thee, from the days of Josias even to this day.Prendi un libro, e in esso scrivi tutte le parole, che io ho dette a te contro Israele, e contro Giuda, e contro tutte le genti dal tempo del regno di Giosia quand'io ti parlai, fino a questo dì:Take a volume of a booke and thou shalt write in it al the wordes, that I haue spoken to thee against Israel and Iuda, & against al Nations since the day that I spake to thee, from the daies of Iosias euen to this day.Tolle volumen libri, et scribes in eo omnia verba quæ locutus sum tibi adversum Israël et Judam, et adversum omnes gentes, a die qua locutus sum ad te ex diebus Josiæ usque ad diem hanc: 3If so be, when the house of Juda shall hear all the evils that I purpose to do unto them, that they may return every man from his wicked way: and I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin. If perhaps the house of Iuda hearing al the euils, that I meane to doe vnto them, let euerie man returne from his most wicked way: and I wil be propicious to their iniquitie, and to their sinne.si forte, audiente domo Juda universa mala quæ ego cogito facere eis, revertatur unusquisque a via sua pessima, et propitius ero iniquitati et peccato eorum. 4So Jeremias called Baruch the son of Nerias: and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremias all the words of the Lord, which he spoke to him, upon the roll of a book.Geremia adunque chiamò Baruch figliuolo di Neria: e Baruch scrisse nel libro sotto la dettatura di Geremia tutte le parole dette a lui dal Signore:Ieremie therefore called Baruch the sonne of Nerias: and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Ieremie al the wordes of our Lord, which he spake to him, in the volume of the booke.
5And Jeremias commanded Baruch, saying: I am shut up, and cannot go into the house of the Lord.E Geremia diede quest'ordine a Baruch, dicendo: Io son rinchiuso, e non posso andare alla casa del Signore; And Ieremie commanded Baruch, saying: I am shut vp, neither am I able to goe into the house of our Lord.et præcepit Jeremias Baruch, dicens: Ego clausus sum, nec valeo ingredi domum Domini. 6Go thou in therefore, and read out of the volume, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of the Lord, in the hearing of all the people in the house of the Lord on the fasting day: and also thou shalt read them in the hearing of all Juda that come out of their cities:Ma va tu, e leggi dal libro scritto da te sotto la mia dettatura le parole del Signore a sentita del popolo nella casa del Signore il dì del digiuno: e le leggerai ancora a sentita di tutto Giuda, che viene dalle sue città,Goe thou in therefore, and read out of the volume, wherein thou hast written from my mouth the wordes of our Lord, in the hearing of al the people in the house of our Lord on the fasting day: moreouer also in the hearing of al Iuda, which come out of their cities, thou shalt read it to them:Ingredere ergo tu, et lege de volumine in quo scripsisti ex ore meo verba Domini, audiente populo in domo Domini, in die jejunii: insuper et audiente universo Juda qui veniunt de civitatibus suis, leges eis, 7If so be they may present their supplication before the Lord, and may return every one from his wicked way: for great is the wrath and indignation which the Lord hath pronounced against this people. Imperocché grande è il furore, e l'indignazione, che il Signore ha manifestata contro di questo popolo.if perhaps their prayer may fal in the sight of our Lord, and euerie one returne from his most wicked way: because great is the furie & indignation, which our Lord hath spoken against this people.si forte cadat oratio eorum in conspectu Domini, et revertatur unusquisque a via sua pessima: quoniam magnus furor et indignatio est quam locutus est Dominus adversus populum hunc. 8And Baruch the son of Nerias did according to all that Jeremias the prophet had commanded him, reading out of the volume the words of the Lord in the house of the Lord.E fece Baruch figliuolo di Neria tutto quello, che aveagli ordinato Geremia profeta, leggendo dal libro le parole del Signore nella casa del Signore. And Baruch the sonne of Nerias did according to al thinges, that Ieremie the prophet had commanded him, reading out of the volume the wordes of our Lord in the house of our Lord.Et fecit Baruch filius Neriæ juxta omnia quæ præceperat ei Jeremias propheta, legens ex volumine sermones Domini in domo Domini.
9And it came to pass in the fifth year of Joakim the son of Josias king of Juda, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the Lord to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that were come together out of the cities of Juda to Jerusalem.L'anno quinto di Joachim figliuolo di Giosia, re di Giuda, il mese nono fu intimato un digiuno davanti al Signore a tutto il popolo di Gerusalemme, e a tutta la moltitudine, che era concorsa in folla a Gerusalemme dalle città di Giuda. And it came to passe in the fifth yeare of Ioakim the sonne of Iosias the king of Iuda, in the ninth moneth: they proclaymed a fast in the sight of our Lord to al the people in Ierusalem, and to al the multitude, that was flocked together out of the cities of Iuda in Ierusalem.Factum est autem in anno quinto Joakim filii Josiæ regis Juda, in mense nono: prædicaverunt jejunium in conspectu Domini omni populo in Jerusalem, et universæ multitudini quæ confluxerat de civitatibus Juda in Jerusalem. 10And Baruch read out of the volume the words of Jeremias in the house of the Lord, in the treasury of Gamarias the son of Saphan the scribe, in the upper court, in the entry of the new gate of the house of the Lord, in the hearing of all the people.E Baruch lesse dal libro le parole di Geremia nella casa del Signore nel gazofilacio di Gamaria figliuolo di Saphan dottor della legge, nel vestibolo superiore all'ingresso della porta nuova della casa del Signore a sentita di tutto il popolo. And Baruch redde out of the wordes of Ieremie in the house of our Lord, in the treasurie of Gamarias the sonne of Saphan the scribe, in the higher court, in the entrie of the new gate of the house of our Lord, al the people hearing it.Legitque Baruch ex volumine sermones Jeremiæ in domo Domini, in gazophylacio Gamariæ filii Saphan scribæ, in vestibulo superiori, in introitu portæ novæ domus Domini, audiente omni populo. 11And when Micheas the son of Gamarias the son of Saphan had heard out of the book all the words of the Lord,E avendo sentito Michea figliuolo di Gamaria, figliuolo di Saphan tutte le parole del Signore lette sul libro,And when Micheas the sonne of Gamarias the sonne of Saphan had heard al the wordes of our Lord out of the booke:Cumque audisset Michæas filius Gamariæ filii Saphan omnes sermones Domini ex libro, 12He went down into the king’s house to the secretary’s chamber: and behold all the princes sat there, Elisama the scribe, and Dalaias the son of Semeias, and Elnathan the son of Achobor, and Gamarias the son of Saphan, and Sedecias the son of Hananias, and all the princes.Andò alla casa del re alla camera del segretario, dove sedevano tutti i principi, Elisama segretario, e Dalaia figliuolo di Semeia, ed Elnathan figliuolo di Achobor, e Gamaria figliuolo di Saphan, e Sedecia figliuolo di Hanania, e tutti i principi:he went downe into the kings house to the treasurie of the scribe: and behold al the princes sate there, Elisama the scribe, and Dalaias the sonne of Semeias, and Elnathan the sonne of Achobor: and Gamarias the sonne of Saphan, & Sedecias the sonne of Hananias, and al the princes.descendit in domum regis, ad gazophylacium scribæ, et ecce ibi omnes principes sedebant: Elisama scriba, et Dalaias filius Semeiæ, et Elnathan filius Achobor, et Gamarias filius Saphan, et Sedecias filius Hananiæ, et universi principes:
13And Micheas told them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read out of the volume in the hearing of the people.E raccontò loro Michea tutto quello, che avea udito leggere da Baruch a sentita del popolo. And Micheas told them al the wordes that he had heard Baruch reading out of the volume in the eares of the people.et nuntiavit eis Michæas omnia verba quæ audivit, legente Baruch ex volumine in auribus populi. 14Therefore all the princes sent Judi the son of Nathanias, the son of Selemias, the son of Chusi, to Baruch, saying: Take in thy hand the volume in which thou hast read in the hearing of the people, and come. So Baruch the son of Nerias took the volume in his hand, and came to them. Al the princes therefore sent to Baruch, Iudi the sonne of Nathanias, the sonne of Selemias, the sonne of Chusi, saying: Take in thy hand the volume, out of which thou hast redde in the hearing of the people, and come. Baruch therefore the sonne of Nerias tooke the volume in his hand, and came to them.Miserunt itaque omnes principes ad Baruch Judi filium Nathaniæ filii Selemiæ filii Chusi, dicentes: Volumen ex quo legisti, audiente populo, sume in manu tua, et veni. Tulit ergo Baruch filius Neriæ volumen in manu sua, et venit ad eos: 15And they said to him: Sit down and read these things in our hearing. And Baruch read in their hearing.E quegli dissero a lui: Siedi, leggi queste cose dinanzi a noi. E Baruch le lesse dinanzi ad essi. And they said to him: Sitte, & reade these thinges in our eares. 16And when they had heard all the words, they looked upon one another with astonishment, and they said to Baruch: We must tell the king all these words. Therefore when they had heard al the wordes, they were astonied euerie one toward his neighbour, and they sayd to Baruch: We must tel the king al these wordes.
17And they asked him, saying: Tell us how didst thou write all these words from his mouth.E lo interrogarono, dicendo: Racconta a noi come tu abbi raccolto dalla sua bocca tutte queste cose. And they asked him, saying: Tel vs how didest thou write al these wordes from his mouth.Et interrogaverunt eum, dicentes: Indica nobis quomodo scripsisti omnes sermones istos ex ore ejus. 18And Baruch said to them: With his mouth he pronounced all these words as if he were reading to me: and I wrote in a volume with ink.E Baruch disse loro: Egli pronunziava colla sua bocca tutte queste a parole come se le leggesse, ed io le scrivea nel libro coll'inchiostro. And Baruch sayd to them: From his mouth he spake as it were reading vnto me al these wordes: and I wrote in a volume with inke.Dixit autem eis Baruch: Ex ore suo loquebatur quasi legens ad me omnes sermones istos, et ego scribebam in volumine atramento. 19And the princes said to Baruch: Go, and hide thee, both thou and Jeremias, and let no man know where you are.E i principi dissero a Baruch: Va, e nasconditi tu, e Geremia, che nissun sappia dove voi siate. And the princes sayd to Baruch: Goe, and be hidde thou and Ieremie, and let no man know where you are. 20And they went in to the king into the court: but they laid up the volume in the chamber of Elisama the scribe: and they told all the words in the hearing of the king. And they went to the king into the court: moreouer they layde vp the volume in the treasurie of Elisama the scribe: and they tolde al the wordes in the hearing of the king. 21And the king sent Judi that he should take the volume: who bringing it out of the chamber of Elisama the scribe, read it in the hearing of the king, and of all the princes that stood about the king.E il re mandò Giudi a prendere il libro; il quale presolo dal gazofilacio di Elisama segretario, lo lesse a sentita del re, e di tutti i principi, che stavano intorno al re.And the king sent Iudi, that he should take the volume: who taking it out of the treasurie of Elisama the scribe, redde it, the king hearing, and al the princes, that stood about the king.
22Now the king sat in the winter house, in the ninth month: and there was a hearth before him full of burning coals. And the king sate in the winter house in the ninth moneth: and there was an hearth set before him ful of burning coles.Rex autem sedebat in domo hiemali, in mense nono, et posita erat arula coram eo plena prunis. 23And when Judi had read three or four pages, he cut it with the penknife, and he cast it into the fire, that was upon the hearth, till all the volume was consumed with the fire that was on the hearth.E dopo, che Giudi ebbe lette tre, o quattro pagine, il re tagliò il libro col temperino del segretario, e gettollo sul fuoco, che era nel caldano, facendo consumare tutto il libro dal fuoco del caldano. And when Iudi had redde three or foure pages, he cut it with the penknife of a scribe: and he cast it into the fire, that was vpon the hearth, til al the volume was consumed with the fyre, that was on the hearth.Cumque legisset Judi tres pagellas vel quatuor, scidit illud scalpello scribæ, et projecit in ignem qui erat super arulam, donec consumeretur omne volumen igni qui erat in arula. 24And the king and all his servants that heard all these words were not afraid, nor did they rend their garments.E non ebber timore, né stracciaron le loro vesti né il re, né i servi di lui, che udiron tutti tutte queste parole. And the king and al his seruants, that heard al these wordes, did not feare, nor rent their garments. 25But yet Elnathan, and Dalaias, and Gamarias spoke to the king, not to burn the book: and he heard them not. But yet Elnathan, and Dalaias, and Gamarias gaynesaid the king, not to burne the booke: and he heard them not. 26And the king commanded Jeremiel the son of Amelech, and Saraias the son of Ezriel, and Selemias the son of Abdeel, to take up Baruch the scribe, and Jeremias the prophet: but the Lord hid them.E il re ordinò a Jeremiel figliuolo di Amelech, e a Saraia figliuolo di Ezdriel, e a Selemia figliuolo di Abdeel, che prendessero Baruch segretario, e Geremia profeta: ma il Signore il nascose. And the king commanded Ieremiel the sonne of Amelech, and Saraias the sonne of Ezriel, and Selemias the sonne of Abdeel, that they should apprehend Baruch the scribe, and Ieremie the Prophet: but our Lord hid them.
27And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias the prophet, after that the king had burnt the volume, and the words that Baruch had written from the mouth of Jeremias, saying:E il Signore parlò a Geremia profeta dopo, che il re ebbe bruciato il libro, e le parole scritte da Baruch a dettatura di Geremia, e disse:And the word of our Lord was made to Ieremie the Prophet, after that the king had burnt the volume and the wordes, that Baruch had written from the mouth of Ieremie, saying:Et factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam prophetam, postquam combusserat rex volumen et sermones quos scripserat Baruch ex ore Jeremiæ, dicens: 28Take thee again another volume: and write in it all the former words that were in the first volume which Joakim the king of Juda hath burnt.Prendi di nuovo un altro libro, e scrivi in esso tutte le parole, che eran già nel primo libro bruciato da Joachim I re di Giuda;Againe take an other volume: and write in it al the former wordes, that were in the first volume, which Ioakim the king of Iuda hath burnt.Rursum tolle volumen aliud, et scribe in eo omnes sermones priores qui erant in primo volumine, quod combussit Joakim rex Juda. 29And thou shalt say to Joakim the king of Juda: Thus saith the Lord: Thou hast burnt that volume, saying: Why hast thou written therein, and said: The king of Babylon shall come speedily, and shall lay waste this land: and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?E a Joachim re di Giuda dirai: Queste cose dice il Signore: Tu hai bruciato quel libro, dicendo: Perchè hai tu scritto in esso questa predizione: Verrà con prestezza il re di Babilonia, e devasterà questa terra, e ne sterminerà uomini, e giumenti? And to Ioakim the king of Iuda thou shalt say: Thus saith our Lord: Thou hast burnt that volume, saying: Why hast thou written in it telling: The king of Babylon wil come in hast, and wil waste this land: and he wil make man and beast, to cease out of it?Et ad Joakim regem Juda dices: Hæc dicit Dominus: Tu combussisti volumen illud, dicens: Quare scripsisti in eo annuntians: Festinus veniet rex Babylonis, et vastabit terram hanc, et cessare faciet ex illa hominem et jumentum ? 30Therefore thus saith the Lord against Joakim the king of Juda: He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day, and to the frost by night. Therefore thus saith our Lord against Ioakim the king of Iuda: There shal not be of him to sitte vpon the throne of Dauid: and his carcasse shal be cast forth to the heate by day, and to the frost by night.
31And I will punish him, and his seed and his servants, for their iniquities, and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Juda all the evil that I have pronounced against them, but they have not heard.E visiterò lui, e la sua stirpe, e suoi servi per le loro iniquità: e farò cadere sopra di essi, e sopra gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, e sopra gli uomini di Giuda tutto il male, che io ho loro annunziato; perchè non mi hanno ascoltato. And I wil visite against him, and against his seede, and against his seruants their iniquities, and I wil bring vpon them, and vpon the inhabitants of Ierusalem, and vpon the men of Iuda al the euil, that I haue spoken to them: and they haue not heard. 32And Jeremias took another volume, and gave it to Baruch the son of Nerias the scribe: who wrote in it from the mouth of Jeremias all the words of the book which Joakim the king of Juda had burnt with fire: and there were added besides many more words than had been before.E Geremia prese un altro libro, e diello a Baruch figliuolo di Neria segretario, il quale vi scrisse a dettatura di Geremia le parole tutte del libro bruciato da Joachim re di Giuda; e vi furono aggiunti molti ragionamenti di più, che non v'erano per l'avanti. And Ieremie tooke an other volume, and gaue it to Baruch the sonne of Nerias the scribe: who wrote in it from the mouth of Ieremie al the wordes of the booke, which Ioakim the king of Iuda had burnt with fire: and there were added moreouer manie moe wordes, then had bene before.

And what manner of prophet said this? Be not curious, nor overbusy. For many of the prophetic writings have been lost; and this one may see from the history of the Chronicles. For being negligent, and continually falling into ungodliness, some they suffered to perish, others they themselves burnt up and cut to pieces. The latter fact Jeremiah relates;

36:5
5. Ego clausus sum — in carcere a Joakim rege timente, ne, si liberum me sinat, meis tristibus oraculis percellam et frangam animos populi. 19. Secundo, planius alii, Hebraeum עצור atsur, vertunt, detentus sum, prohibitus sum, scilicet vel a rege Joakim, ut vult Sanchez; vel a Dei spiritu, ingredi templum et legere librum, ne ibi occidar.
Unde cap. seq. vers. 19, Noster Interpres Hebraeam hanc phrasim vertit: «Valeat in conspectu tuo deprecatio mea.» Simili phrasi ait Jeremias, cap. xxxviii, 26: «Prostravi ego preces meas coram rege.» Unde sequitur hic: «Et revertatur unusquisque a via sua pessima.» Simile est Daniel. ix, 17. Vide hic quid facere soleant minae Jeremiae et concionatorum: nimirum minae sunt quasi pharmaca, quibus exciti peccatorum humores expelluntur.
36:9
36:19
Praeclare Aristides, orat. in Eteonem, tom.
36:4
Tertio Scripturae ministrum: vocavit ergo Jeremias Baruch. Apoc.
Circa primum primo ponitur denuntiandi praeceptum: ego clausus sum. 2 Tim. 2: labora sicut bonus miles Christi Jesu. Phil.
2 Paral. 27: in vestibulo superiori, idest in superiori parte atrii, in quo sacerdotes immolabant. 2 Esdrae 9: legerunt in volumine domini Dei sui quater in die, et quater in nocte.
36:13
36:14
Secundo Scripturae petitio: miserunt itaque omnes principes ad Baruch (...) dicentes volumen ex quo legisti populo sume in manu tua: mystice, in operatione. Eccle. 9: quodcumque potest facere manus tua, instanter operare: quia nec opus, nec ratio, nec sapientia, nec scientia erunt apud Inferos, quo tu properas. Apportatio, tulit ergo.
36:15
Proverb. 20: rex qui sedet in solio judicii, dissipat omne malum intuitu suo.
36:17
Perscrutantur editionis modum: unde primo ponitur quaestio: et interrogaverunt eum, dicentes: indica nobis quomodo scripsisti omnes sermones istos ex ore ejus; ut ex modo scirent, utrum divino spiritu edita Scriptura esset. 1 Joan. 4: nolite omni spiritui credere, sed probate spiritus an ex Deo sint: quoniam multi pseudoprophetae exierunt in mundum.
36:18
36:21
Tertio ponitur Scripturae recitatio: misitque rex Judi; Job 29: cumque sederem quasi rex circumstante exercitu, eram tamen maerentium consolator.
36:22
36:23
Secundo ponitur destructio: cumque legisset Judi tres pagellas, parvas paginas, scalpello, cultello, quo parabat pennam. Isa. 30: auferte a me viam, declinate a me semitam, cesset a facie vestra sanctus Israel.
Psalm. 88: visitabo in virga iniquitates eorum, et in verberibus peccata eorum.
36:31
Ego dominus faciens omnia haec.
36:32
Tertio ponit praecepti complementum: Jeremias autem tulit volumen aliud. Sap. 7: sapientia autem vincit malitiam.
