Bull on the Feast of the Transfiguration
— 6. Penal Sanction.
Callistus, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual remembrance of the matter.
1 Among the mysteries of divine providence, which the inscrutable providence of the Creator has wrought in mankind, this present feast day, on which the Only-begotten Son of God, having clothed Himself in the garment of our mortality for the restoration of the human race, demonstrated the splendor of His divinity and the power thereof, is assuredly a cause worthy of our wonder and admiration. For although the remarkable miracles of our same Redeemer, together with teachings and examples almost innumerable, given for our instruction and indeed for our salvation, are most worthy of the admiration and veneration of all; yet we ought to celebrate with greater devotion and pious reverence the admirable Transfiguration of our same Savior, marked with singular mysteries and shining with ineffable sacraments, and to recall it with devout souls and pious devotion, because in this vision of the present day, among the salutary actions of our Redeemer Himself, there is shown to redeemed mortals in one and the same person both the power of the Godhead and the true nature of man: and confirming in us the gifts of faith, hope and charity, it provides the assurance of eternal beatitude. For this is that feast day, venerable to all Christians, which demonstrated the immense clemency and mercy of our God toward us, who have put on Christ and are marked with His character: and it not only founded the foundations of the most holy universal Church upon the rock Christ, but also established them; for when the Lord questioned them and asked what men said the Son of Man to be, the disciples answered that some said John the Baptist, others Elias, and others Jeremias or one of the prophets; and when the Lord again questioned them: But whom do you say that I am? And Peter, speaking for himself and the others, affirmed: Thou art Christ the Son of the living God: this very true and saving confession of Peter was in this admirable Transfiguration of our Savior confirmed, established and approved in many ways by the voice of the Father saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, and the perfidy of the Jews, by which they falsely contended that He was Elias or Jeremias or some one of the prophets, was utterly refuted. And the false accusation of others, who mendaciously accused Him as a transgressor of the law and a blasphemer usurping the glory of God to Himself, was excluded, since there Moses the lawgiver and Elias the emulator for the glory of God and an excellent prophet, standing with Christ, bore witness. With what veneration therefore ought this present feast day to be honored and celebrated with special solemnity, in which the Father, by His own voice and testimony, manifestly confirms Peter's confession, the faith and confession of the apostles is strengthened, which was the foundation of the Catholic Church firmly established in our Savior and Redeemer Himself. For Christ is the true foundation of the Church, beside which no other can be laid; to whom the Prince of the Apostles himself, inflamed by the Holy Spirit, to confute the deceits of the faithless, as a faithful witness, bears testimony to Christ the witness, saying: For having received from God the Father honor and glory, when there came unto him such a voice from the magnificent glory: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. And we ourselves heard this voice brought from heaven, when we were with him in the holy mount. For Peter and his companions understood by faith what they held, the majesty of the Son of God through the brightness of light, and that in Him the divine and human nature had come together, so that both the paternal voice and the immense brightness as of the sun, which exceeds all sense and the faculty of mortals, and the presence of Moses and Elias with the exhibition of veneration due to divine majesty, speaking of His future passion, in announcing the true Son of God, which the evangelist John affirms, saying: And we saw his glory, the glory as it were of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Our Savior also willed, knowing that the hearts of His disciples were troubled by fear of His passion, to strengthen them by this mystery of Transfiguration, lest they should fail in faith, so that they who had seen His transfigured glory might believe that His passion was not inflicted by the power of the Jews, but was assumed by His own will, and that they should not fall away from faith in the Lord's Resurrection, which He made known to them after the vision of such majesty and glory, saying: Tell the vision to no man, till the Son of Man be risen from the dead. Through this admirable mystery of Transfiguration also, for bearing the storms of the present dark age, the souls of Christ's faithful in the person of the apostles are taught humbly by their Head and Savior Himself, and for His name's sake, imitating His footsteps, to fear not sufferings and deaths. Through the understanding of this mystery therefore, for the confirmation of Christ Jesus and His imitation; for the exercise of whatever meritorious works of faith, hope and charity, and of piety and mercy toward God and our neighbors, we are instructed, we are invited to penance, and also to martyrdom and the endurance of sufferings, with this reward proposed, that He will reform the body of our humility, and configure it to the body of His glory. O singular and excellent doctrine of our Savior! O ineffable sacrament, in which so many and almost innumerable and principal miracles of His are concluded, instituted by high counsel for our salvation; which, if any faithful one should attend to as he ought, for the assurance of eternal glory, would exult with profuse joys at once, and would be compelled to shed tears in the midst. For it was indeed a great and wonderful miracle that the human face should shine like the sun, and that His garment should suddenly become white and gleaming with such brightness as no fuller on earth, as the evangelist testifies, could make, and that this brightness itself should disappear at the pleasure of His will, so that it might rightly signify that this clarity flowed from His soul, which according to its higher part was glorious and saw the Word face to face, into His body itself by the command of His will and overflowed. And in the presence of Moses and Elias, of whom the one had departed from life, it is beautifully and clearly shown that He has power over death and life, and is rightly constituted the judge of the living and likewise of the dead, who therefore in some way designated eternal beatitude on earth, and showed them what manner He would appear in His second coming. All these things indeed, and the sayings of the prophets and apostles, the paternal voice miraculously formed confirms, the bright cloud overshadows, and the testimony of the whole Trinity concurs on this day, the Father thundering, the Son shining, the Holy Spirit in the cloud protecting and illuminating; the new testament is confirmed, the evangelical law and the doctrine of Christ, when the paternal voice added: Hear ye him. Happy therefore and blessed among mortals might he be judged, to whom it was granted to perceive, behold and contemplate under a human body such great mysteries, which are conceded to angelic and blessed spirits by great privilege. Who therefore, at the magnitude of such great things wrought in a wonderful manner by our Author for the salvation of mankind, should not marvel at the salutary institution of this present feast day? Who, on this most sacred day, on which so many and such great mysteries are sealed, on which Christ showed the power of His divinity, the testimony and presence of the prophets, and that He has power over life and death, and is constituted the judge of the living and the dead, on which heavenly beatitude and humanity in glorious form are in some way exhibited to earthly men, on which the sayings of the prophets and apostles are confirmed by the paternal voice, and the testimony of the whole Trinity and of men of the new and old Testament is borne, the evangelical law is strengthened, should not rejoice in the honor of this same Savior, and in hymns and canticles praise, bless and magnify the Redeemer Himself, since through those things which have been recounted and other mysteries included in this present feast day, we plainly understand the glorification of the mystical body in the last resurrection, when the mortal shall put on immortality, and the corruptible shall put on incorruption, and that which is sown in dishonor shall rise in glory? Then indeed the bright face shall truly appear, for Christ is our head and the white garments which signify His mystical body, which is the universal Church; for the just shall shine as the sun in the sight of God: then at last the mystery of the Transfiguration shall be made plain, when, imitating the footsteps of our same Redeemer, we shall enjoy His glory in eternal beatitude.
2 § 1. To confirm therefore the faith by the confession of the law and the prophets, and also by the many and greatest divine mysteries and wonderful miracles of this most sacred Transfiguration, we are not without reason moved by divine inspiration to celebrate this most renowned day, and we are invited to make it known solemnly to the faithful, so that just as we devoutly commemorate the Visitation, and the Snow, and the Purification of the glorious Virgin Mary, and the Presentation in the temple, in which our Saviour showed himself as the Son of Man, and also the Circumcision in which he observed the legal precepts, and certain other festivals of the saints instituted in recent times, so too we may with fitting devotion and most pious annual veneration honour this most sacred day, in which he showed himself to be the Lord of the law and the prophets, in which he displayed not the infirmity of the flesh, but the power of glorification, and in which so many and such great mysteries shone forth. For the most holy Roman Church is accustomed, by permission of the Most High, while Peter's boat is sometimes tossed about, to implore divine rather than human aid, and from the same our Saviour, as the spouse of his Church, its founder and best teacher, to seek in tears and humility the customary remedies and timely assistance, and to mitigate his clemency, offended by the weight of our sins, by the remedies of penance and prayers.
3 § 2. For this reason we, holding the place and office of that same Saviour of ours, whose vicar we are, albeit unworthy, upon the earth, who, after speaking of many perils, of His passion and death and future persecutions and the slaughter of disciples, exhorted them at the last to bear all these things with equanimity, with the glory of the future life promised, imitating His teaching and adhering to His salutary warnings and footsteps, and desiring to celebrate solemnly and to urge Christian faithful to celebrate those things by which the altitude of that same Saviour's wisdom, the rectitude of His justice, the immensity of His power and the abundance of His goodness are demonstrated, and by which faith may be strengthened in our hearts, hope may be raised up and charity may be stirred; and to invite more especially to the bearing of tribulations and persecutions at this present time, when the rabid enemy, namely the Turk Mahomet 1, who has opened his mouth in blasphemy against the Most High, and strives to bring slaughter upon Christian faithful, to profane the tabernacle of God, to violate churches, and to blot out the faith of Christ, His name and His subjects, and also to break the madness of himself and his satellites, we not unreasonably censure the slowness of Christians; from which, which we do not wish, it is probable that they are scourged and smitten with plagues; beseeching aid most devoutly from many and especially from Him under whose standard and name we fight, although, turning over in our mind the excellence of so great a matter while we were placed in lesser things, we understand plainly that it is unequal to our strength. Yet lest we appear to contradict the Holy Spirit or to have despised the command of the divine will, mature deliberation having been held upon this matter with our venerable brothers the cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, first in secret and then in public consistories, with the same and other prelates residing in the Roman Curia, we have, by the counsel of those same brothers, instituted the day of this most sacred solemnity to be celebrated perpetually by all Christian faithful. Truly believing that the Redeemer Himself, whose matter is being conducted, and who protects and sustains His Church, rubicated with His precious Blood, and those things which He foresees will profit it, manifests through that same Holy Spirit in due time, has divinely inspired our minds and those of many devout men, while this savage storm rages, to the celebration of so great a mystery, which conduces alike to the strengthening and confirmation of the Catholic faith and to honour, so that besides the common commemoration which the universal Church makes of that same excellent miracle on the Saturday of the first week of the Lenten fast and the following Sunday, a more solemn solemnity proper in honour of that same Saviour throughout the whole world, namely on the eighth day before the Kalends of August, which is the sixth day of August, shall be celebrated annually by all the faithful as this sacred festival, because that Father of mercies and most pious protector of Christians and defender of our life, the almighty God, after thence, on the celebrated solemnity of the blessed apostles Peter and Paul, when we were performing the sacred solemnities of masses in their basilica, we caused our letters concerning a general prayer to be made throughout all Christendom to be read and, God favouring, observed everywhere: the pious prayers and works of His afflicted people having been somewhat mitigated, the ferocity of that viper and most savage Turk, the abominable worshipper of Mahomet, in the past summer, with his almost innumerable army, in which he placed his first confidence, of infidels and Turks was overcome, and the Castle of Belgrade in the kingdom of Hungary situated on the bank of the Danube, which he was eager to plunder, besieged on all sides and straitened, the siege being lifted by the cross-signed and Hungarians, very popular though fewer in number and almost unarmed, by our ordinance and instruction enjoined upon our beloved son the legate sent thither from our side, and repeated often by messengers and letters, out of sincere faith, which we bear in our Saviour Himself, whose it is to gather the dispersed and to protect the desperate and to break and even to defeat the power of the proud, especially infidels and those of Christian faith 2, under the strenuous vayvode John of blessed memory, the keenest defender of our Catholic faith and its champion and defender for it and the faithful, and most worthy leader of the Christian cohort, to whom neither faith nor hope of obtaining victory was lacking, fighting, likewise with the presence of John of Capistrano of old, a professor of the Order of Friars Minor, a man truly excellent and of singular merits with God and men, and invoking the name of Christ Jesus, in whom our salvation consists, trustfully and assiduously with all the people surrounding with one voice, the standard also of the most sacred Cross being elevated to Heaven with great cries and tears, whence infallible aid, as all hoped it would be given, came: a marvellous thing, on the memorable day of blessed Mary Magdalene, by Divine aid the army of the enemy is routed, the people of the faithful being protected by heavenly aid, a vigorous assault being made upon the enemies, that same fierce Turk with his sacrilegious accomplices was turned to shameful and ruinous flight, and the merciful Lord and faithful gave into the hand of few so fierce an enemy and an innumerable army with the greatest slaughter victory, beyond what human mind can estimate. For the Lord is mighty and above all armies and tyrants, who delivered Midian and the peoples of the East to the number of locusts into the hand of Gideon, and also afforded aid and help to Onias the priest against Heliodorus, who was striving to profane the holy city Jerusalem, and fought miraculously for us against the most insolent enemies. O good Jesus, our leader and Saviour, true strength and safest and sure refuge for Christians fleeing to Thee, with that piety with which Thou didst redeem them with Thine own blood, thrusting Thy sword upon the heads of the fleeing enemies, no fewer slew themselves by mutual slaughter than would have been slain by our battle. For, as we have received from trustworthy sources, in that battle forty thousand were slain and as many more, turning to shameful flight, perished by mutual slaughter, camps were burned, all machines and instruments of war were plundered by water and land, so that the confused tyrant departing, and not appearing for many months now for fear, is said to have withdrawn himself into hiding places or fortified cities, and to have decreed in vain to fortify those same cities with walls and outworks; paying less heed to the fact that unless the Lord keepeth the city, he watcheth in vain that keepeth it. The Saviour Himself, putting a bridle upon his pride, the name alone of the Vicar of Jesus Christ deters his inhumanity, so that his bones tremble and are shaken in his body, as happened to the Emperor Adrian, who, after the most savage persecution of Christians—Forty thousand Turks are slain, the rest being put to flight.
4 rum, entered the city of Tivoli, for a year his bones were shaken in his body, and finally putrefied he withered away.
5 § 5. Therefore all the faithful constituted throughout the world ought to prepare their minds and bodies for the protection of the Christian faith and render due thanks to our Saviour for so many benefits received from Him, and each year piously, solemnly and devoutly celebrate the day of victory granted to us from heaven, the day of joy and liberation from the son of pride, the poisonous serpent, the most wicked Turk; just as the children of Israel, freed from the servitude of Egypt, perpetually celebrating the memorable day, rendered praises to God and due thanksgiving; so too all peoples in this solemnity and festival especially commemorating the mysteries of the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus Christ, miracles and testimonies of the law of nature and grace and of the whole holy and undivided Trinity, also on account of the victory obtained, ought to venerate and celebrate this day of joy with perpetual praises, observances and thanksgivings, to the confusion of enemies and the victory of the Christian people.
6 § 4. And, so that the Christian faithful may devoutly and affectionately come to the veneration of the festival of holy indulgence, and each one, according to the measure of his weakness, may render praises to the same Redeemer and due thanksgiving for benefits received, and so that He Himself, the true Shepherd and Redeemer, may protect and preserve His flock, and strengthen and lead their minds to the total humiliation and extermination of rivals in faith, trusting in the mercy of almighty God and the authority of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, to all truly penitent and confessed who shall attend the vigil and festival of this kind in the evening and morning offices and masses in the church in which the newly instituted office shall be celebrated, for each of the hours and mass, one hundred days; but those who shall attend the offices of prime, terce, sext, none and compline, for each of those hours individually, forty days of the penances enjoined upon them we remit. Those who, for the sake of devotion, shall have celebrated the octave of this festival, and especially in churches founded under the invocation of the Saviour Himself, and who shall have attended the canonical hours and masses of these octaves, shall obtain all those indulgences which our predecessors with pious generosity granted to those attending the hours of the octave of the festival of the Most Holy Body of Christ.
7 § 5. Wherefore to our venerable brothers the Apostolic Nuncios everywhere, to all patriarchs, archbishops, bishops and beloved sons the elected, and to the chapters of patriarchal, metropolitan and cathedral churches constituted anywhere, by virtue of holy obedience and for the increase of eternal rewards, by this series we enjoin and command that, solemnly publishing these our letters to their clergy and peoples by our authority, they celebrate and cause to be celebrated by their subjects each year, as aforesaid, the most sacred festival of the Transfiguration of this kind, which is commonly called the festival of the Saviour, under the office of solemn double which together with these presents we send, humbly beseeching the Saviour Himself with all the affections of the heart, that He may deign to assist and aid His universal Church and all the faithful aforesaid with His accustomed clemency, and, the fear of enemies removed, grant to us that peace which the world cannot give and tranquil times, so that together with the flock committed to us we may deserve to attain to eternal joys. Amen.
8 § 6. Let no one whatsoever presume to infringe this page of our institution, remission and command, etc. Given at Rome at St. Peter's, in the year of the Lord's Incarnation one thousand four hundred fifty-seven, on the eighth day before the Ides of August, in the eleventh year of our pontificate.
9 Given on 8 August 1457, pontificate year 11.
