Tryphon demandeth an bundred talents of siluer, and hostages for Ionathas. 17. which are sent (to satisfie the people) Tryphon receiueth the rarsom, 23. killeth Ionathas, and his sonnes. 25 Simon erecteth a memorie to his parentes and bretheren. 31. Tryphon murthereth his young king. 33. Simon fortifieth the countrie, obteyneth peace, and liberties of Demetrius: 42. subdueth the citie Gaza, and the rebellious castle within Ierusalem.
1Now Simon heard that Tryphon was gathering together a very great army to invade the land of Juda, and to destroy it.Or Simone inteso come Trifone avea radunato un grosso esercito per entrare nella terra di Giuda, e desolarla.AND Simon heard that Tryphon gathered a very great armie, to come into the land of Iuda, and to destroy it.Et audivit Simon quod congregavit Tryphon exercitum copiosum ut veniret in terram Juda, et attereret eam. 2And seeing that the people was in dread and in fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and assembled the people,E veggendo come la gente era impaurito e tremante, andò a Gerusalemme, e convocò tutto il popolo:Seing that the people was in dread, and in feare, he went vp to Iurusalem, and assembled the people:Videns quia in tremore populus est, et in timore, ascendit Jerusalem, et congregavit populum: 3And exhorted them, saying: You know what great battles I and my brethren, and the house of my father, have fought for the laws, and the sanctuary, and the distresses that we have seen:E gli animò, e disse: Voi sapete quanto e io e i miei fratelli, e la casa del padre mio abbiam combattuto per la legge e pel santuario, e in quali angustie ci siamo trovati.and exhorting he sayd: You know what great battels I and my bretheren, and the house of my father, haue made for the lawes, & the holies, and the distresses that we haue sene:et adhortans dixit: Vos scitis quanta ego, et fratres mei, et domus patris mei, fecimus pro legibus et pro sanctis, prælia, et angustias quales vidimus: 4By reason whereof all my brethren have lost their lives for Israel’s sake, and I am left alone.Per questa causa perirono tutti i miei fratelli per Israele, e son rimaso io solo.by reason of these are al my bretheren perished for Israel, and I onlie am left.horum gratia perierunt fratres mei omnes propter Israël, et relictus sum ego solus. 5And now far be it from me to spare my life in any time of trouble: for I am not better than my brethren. And now let it not fal to me to spate my life in al time of tribulation: for I am not better then my bretheren. 6I will avenge then my nation and the sanctuary, and our children, and wives: for all the heathens are gathered together to destroy us out of mere malice.Io adunque difenderò il mio popolo e il santuario e i nostri figliuoli e le nostre mogli, or che tutte le genti per l'odio, che portano a noi, si uniscono alla nostra distruzione.I wil auenge therfore my nation and the holies, our children also, & wiues: because al the heathen are gathered together to destroy vs of emnitie.
7And the spirit of the people was enkindled as soon as they heard these words:A queste parole si infiammò lo spirito del popolo; And the spirit of the people was kindled as soone as they heard these wordes:Et accensus est spiritus populi simul ut audivit sermones istos: 8And they answered with a loud voice, saying: Thou art our leader in the place of Judas, and Jonathan, thy brother:E ad alta voce risposero: Tu se' nostro condottiere in luogo di Giuda e di Gionata tuoi fratelli:and they answered with a lowd voice, saying: Thou art our captayne in the place of Iudas, and Ionathas thy brother:et responderunt voce magna, dicentes: Tu es dux noster loco Judæ, et Jonathæ fratris tui: 9Fight thou our battles, and we will do whatsoever thou shalt say to us.Combatti per noi, e faremo tutto quello che ci comanderai.fight thou our battel, & we wil doe al thinges whatsoeuer thou shalt say to vs.pugna prælium nostrum: et omnia, quæcumque dixeris nobis, faciemus. 10So gathering together all the men of war, he made haste to finish all the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about. And gathering together al the men of warre, he hastened to finish al the walles of Ierusalem, and fortified it round about.Et congregans omnes viros bellatores, acceleravit consummare universos muros Jerusalem, et munivit eam in gyro. 11And he sent Jonathan, the son of Absalom, and with him a new army, into Joppe, and he cast out them that were in it, and himself remained there.E mandò Gionata figliuolo di Absalom a Joppe con nuove schiere, e cacciati quelli che vi eran dentro, si fermò egli colà.And he sent Ionathas the sonne of Absalom, & with him a new armie into Ioppe, and they that were in the castel being cast out, he remayned there. 12And Tryphon removed from Ptolemais with a great army, to invade the land of Juda, and Jonathan was with him in custody.E Trifone parti con grosso esercito da Tolemaide per entrare nella Giudea, e con lui Gionata prigioniero. And Tryphon remoued from Prolemais with a great armie, to come into the land of Iuda, & Ionathas with him in ward.
13But Simon pitched in Addus, over against the plain.E Simone si avvicinò ad Addus dirimpetto alla pianura. But Simon pitched in Addus against the face of the playne.Simon autem applicuit in Addus contra faciem campi. 14And when Tryphon understood that Simon was risen up in the place of his brother, Jonathan, and that he meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers to him,Ma avendo inteso Trifone, come in luogo di Gionata era subentrato il suo fratello Simone, e che questi volea venir seco a battaglia, mandò a lui ambasciadori,And a Tryphon vnderstood that Simon was risen in the place of his brother Ionathas: and that he would ioyne battel with him, he sent legats to him,Et ut cognovit Tryphon quia surrexit Simon loco fratris sui Jonathæ, et quia commissurus esset cum eo prælium, misit ad eum legatos, 15Saying: We have detained thy brother, Jonathan, for the money that he owed in the king’s account, by reason of the affairs which he had the management of.Perché gli dicessero: Abbiam ritenuto Gionata tuo fratello per ragion del denaro, di cui era debitore alla cassa del re, a titolo del negozi, che egli amministrano.saying: For the siluer, that thy brother Ionathas owed in the kings account, for the affayres which he had, we haue stayed him.dicens: Pro argento, quod debebat frater tuus Jonathas in ratione regis propter negotia quæ habuit, detinuimus eum. 16But now send a hundred talents of silver, and his two sons for hostages, that when he is set at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will release him. And now send an hundred talents of siluer, and his two sonnes for hostages, that being dismissed he flee not from vs, and we wil release him. 17Now Simon knew that he spoke deceitfully to him; nevertheless, he ordered the money and the children to be sent, lest he should bring upon himself a great hatred of the people of Israel, who might have said:E Simone ben comprese, che quegli parlava seco con fraude: con tutto questo ordinò, che si desse il denaro e i fanciulli, per non tirarsi addosso la malevoglienza del popolo d'Israele, che direbbe:And Simon knew that with guile he spake with him, neuertheles he commanded the siluer, and the children to be geuen: lest he should get great emnitie with the people of Israel, saying:Et cognovit Simon quia cum dolo loqueretur secum: jussit tamen dari argentum et pueros, ne inimicitiam magnam sumeret ad populum Israël, dicentem:
18Because he sent not the money and the children therefore is he lost. Because he sent not the siluer, & the children, therfore is he perished. 19So he sent the children and the hundred talents and he lied, and did not let Jonathan go.Ed egli mandò i fanciulli e i cento talenti: ma quegli mancò di parola, e non rimandò Gionata. And he sent the children, and the hundred talents: and helyed, and dismissed not Ionathas. 20And after this, Tryphon entered within the country, to destroy it: and they went about by the way that leadeth to Ador: and Simon and his army marched to every place whithersoever they went.E dipoi Trifone entrò nel paese per devastarlo: e si volsero a prendere la strada, che mena ad Ador, e Simone col suo esercito li seguitavano dovunque andassero. And after these thinges came Tryphon within the countrie, to destroy it, and they compassed by the way that leadeth to Addar, & Simon, and his campe marched into euerie place whither soeuer they went. 21And they that were in the castle, sent messengers to Tryphon, that he should make haste to come through the desert, and send them victuals. And they that were in the castel, sent legates to Tryphon, that he should hasten to come through the desert, and should send them victuals. 22And Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night; but there fell a very great snow, and he came not into the country of Galaad.E Trifone mise in ordine tutta la cavalleria per partir quella notte: ma essendo la neve in grandissima copia, egli non entrò nel paese di Galaad. And Tryphon prepared al the horsemen, to come that night: but there was an exceding great snow, and he came not into the countrie of Galaad. 23And when he approached to Bascama, he slew Jonathan and his sons there.Ma avvicinandosi a Bascaman, ivi uccise Gionata e i suoi figliuoli. And when he had approched to Bascama, he slew Ionathas and his sonnes there.
24And Tryphon returned, and went into his own country.E Trifone si voltò indietro, e se ne andò al suo paese. And Tryphon returned, & went into his countrie.Et convertit Tryphon, et abiit in terram suam. 25And Simon sent, and took the bones of Jonathan, his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.E Simone mandò a prendere le ossa di Gionata suo fratello, e le seppellì in Modin patria de' loro padri. And Simon sent, and tooke the bones of Ionathas his brother, and buried them in Modin the citie of his fathers.Et misit Simon, et accepit ossa Jonathæ fratris sui, et sepelivit ea in Modin civitate patrum ejus. 26And all Israel bewailed him with great lamentation: and they mourned for him many days.E tutto Israele menò gran duolo per lui, e lo piansero per molto tempo. And al Israel lamented him with great lamentation: & they mourned for him manie dayes,Et planxerunt eum omnis Israël planctu magno, et luxerunt eum dies multos. 27And Simon built over the sepulchre of his father and of his brethren, a building lofty to the sight, of polished stone, behind and before:E Simone sopra il sepolcro del padre suo e dei suoi fratelli, alzò una fabbrica alta un'occhiata, di pietra tagliata nel dinanzi e nel di dietro:And Simon built ouer the sepulcher of his father and of his bretheren, a building high to behold, of stone polished behind and before:Et ædificavit Simon super sepulchrum patris sui et fratrum suorum ædificium altum visu, lapide polito retro et ante. 28And he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren:E vi collocò sette piramidi, l'una di rimpetto all'altra, al padre, alla madre e ai quattro fratelli:and he erected seuen spyres one against one, to his father and mother, and to his foure bretheren:Et statuit septem pyramidas, unam contra unam, patri et matri, et quatuor fratribus: 29And round about these he set great pillars; and upon the pillars, arms, for a perpetual memory; and by the arms, ships carved, which might be seen by all that sailed on the sea.E intorno ad esse pose delle grandi colonne; e sopra le colonne pose delle armi per eterna memoria; e presso alle armi, delle navi scolpite, le quali si vedessero da tutti quelli che navigassero per quel mare.and about these he set great pillers: and vpon the pillers armour for an eternal memorie: and by the armour shippes grauen, which might be sene of al that sayled the sea.et his circumposuit columnas magnas: et super columnas arma, ad memoriam æternam: et juxta arma naves sculptas, quæ viderentur ab omnibus navigantibus mare:
30This is the sepulchre that he made in Modin, even unto this day. This is the sepulcher, that he made in Modin euen vntil this day.hoc est sepulchrum, quod fecit in Modin usque in hunc diem. 31But Tryphon, when he was upon a journey with the young king, Antiochus, treacherously slew him. But Tryphon whē he iourneyed with Antiochus the king being but a yong man, by guile he slew him.Tryphon autem cum iter faceret cum Antiocho rege adolescente, dolo occidit eum: 32And he reigned in his place, and put on the crown of Asia: and brought great evils upon the land.E regnò in sua vece, e si cinse il diadema dell'Asia, e riempiè il paese di stragi. And he reigned in his place, and put the crowne of Asia vpon him self, and made a great plague in the land.et regnavit loco ejus, et imposuit sibi diadema Asiæ, et fecit plagam magnam in terra. 33And Simon built up the strong holds of Judea, fortifying them with high towers, and great walls, and gates and bars: and he stored up victuals in the fortresses. And Simon built the fortresses of Iurie, fortifying them with high towres, and great walles, and gates, and lockes: and he put victuals in the fortresses.Et ædificavit Simon præsidia Judææ, muniens ea turribus excelsis, et muris magnis, et portis, et seris: et posuit alimenta in munitionibus. 34And Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end that he should grant an immunity to the land; for all that Tryphon did, was to spoil.E Simone mandò deputati al re Demetrio per pregarlo di concedere l'immunità al paese; perocchè tutti gli alti di Trifone erano stati tanti ladrocinj. And Simon chose men & sent to Demetrius the king, that he would make a release to the countrie: because al Tryphons actes had bene done by spoile. 35And king Demetrius, in answer to this request, wrote a letter in this manner:E il re Demetrio rispose alla domanda, e scrisse lettera di tal tenore:And Demetrius the king according to these wordes answered him, and wrote an epistle in this maner:Et Demetrius rex ad verba ista respondit ei, et scripsit epistolam talem: 36King Demetrius to Simon, the high priest, and friend of kings, and to the ancients, and to the nation of the Jews, greeting:Il re Demetrio a Simone sommo Sacerdote e amico dei re, e ai seniori e al popolo de' Giudei, salute.KING demetrius to Simon the high priest, and the freind of kinges, and to the ancients, and to the nation of the Iewes, greeting.Rex Demetrius Simoni summo sacerdoti et amico regum, et senioribus, et genti Judæorum, salutem.

42And the people of Israel began to write in the instruments, and public records, The first year under Simon, the high priest, the great captain, and prince of the Jews.E il popolo d'Israele cominciò a contare nè monumenti e negli atti pubblici dall'anno primo sotto Simone sommo Sacerdote, gran condottiero e principe dei Giudei. And the people of Israel began to write in the tables, and publique instruments. The first yeare vnder Simon the high priest, the great duke, and the prince of the Iewes.Et cœpit populus Israël scribere in tabulis, et gestis publicis, anno primo sub Simone summo sacerdote, magno duce, et principe Judæorum. 43In those days Simon besieged Gaza, and camped round about it, and he made engines, and set them to the city, and he struck one tower, and took it.In quel tempo Simone si accostò a Gaza, e la circondò coll'esercito, e alzò le macchine, e le spinse contro la città, e batte una torre, e la prese.in these dayes Simon approched to Gaza, and compassed it with campes, and he made engins, & set them to the citie, and he stroke one towre, and tooke it.In diebus illis applicuit Simon ad Gazam, et circumdedit eam castris, et fecit machinas, et applicuit ad civitatem, et percussit turrem unam, et comprehendit eam. 44And they that were within the engine leapt into the city: and there was a great uproar in the city.E quelli che stavano in una delle macchine entrarono con furia nella città; e questa fu in gran tumulto. And they that were within the engin, brake out into the citie and there was made a great sturre in the citie.Et eruperant qui erant intra machinam in civitatem, et factus est motus magnus in civitate. 45And they that were in the city went up, with their wives and children, upon the wall, with their garments rent, and they cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.E i cittadini salirono colle moglie coi figliuoli sulle mura, stracciate le vesti, e gridavano ad alta voce pregando Simone a dar loro la pace,And they that were in the citie went vp with their wiues, & children vpon the wal their coates rent, and they cried with a lowd voice, desyring of Simon that the right handes might be geuen them,Et ascenderunt qui erant in civitate cum uxoribus et filiis supra murum, scissis tunicis suis, et clamaverunt voce magna, postulantes a Simone dextras sibi dari, 46And they said: Deal not with us according to our evil deeds, but according to thy mercy.E dicevano: Non voler trattarci secondo la nostra malvagità, ma secondo la tua clemenza.and they sayd: Requite vs not according to our malices, but occording to thy mercies.et dixerunt: Non nobis reddas secundum malitias nostras, sed secundum misericordias tuas.
47And Simon being moved, did not destroy them but yet he cast them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein there had been idols, and then he entered into it with hymns, blessing the Lord:E Simone si lasciò piegare, e non li punì; ma però li cacciò dalla città, e purificò le case, dove erano stati simulacri: e poi vi entrò dentro cantando inni in lode del Signore. And Simon yelding destroyed them not: but yet he cast them out of the citie, and clensed the houses, wherein there had bene idols, and then he entered into it with hymes blessing our Lord:Et flexus Simon, non debellavit eos: ejecit tamen eos de civitate, et mundavit ædes in quibus fuerant simulacra, et tunc intravit in eam cum hymnis benedicens Dominum: 48And having cast out of it all uncleanness, he placed in it men that should observe the law: and he fortified it, and made it his habitation.E toltone tutte le immondezze, la fece abitare da gente che osservasse la legge, e la fortificò, e vi fece una casa per sè.and al filthines being cast out of it, he placed in it men that should doe the law: and he fortified it, and made it his habitation.et ejecta ab ea omni immunditia, collocavit in ea viros qui legem facerent: et munivit eam, et fecit sibi habitationem. 49But they that were in the castle of Jerusalem were hindered from going out and coming into the country, and from buying and selling: and they were straitened with hunger, and many of them perished through famine. But they that were in the castel of Ierusalem, were prohibited to goe out and to come in to the countrie, & to bye, and sel: and they were exceding hungrie, and manie of them perished for famine,Qui autem erant in arce Jerusalem, prohibebantur egredi et ingredi regionem, et emere ac vendere: et esurierunt valde, et multi ex eis fame perierunt, 50And they cried to Simon for peace, and he granted it to them: and he cast them out from thence and cleansed the castle from uncleannesses.E gridavano a Simone, che desse loro la pace; ed egli la concesse; e cacciolli di là, e purificò la cittadella dalle immondezze.and they cried to Simon to receiue the right handes, and he gaue it them: and he cast them out from thence, and clensed the castel from the contaminations:et clamaverunt ad Simonem ut dextras acciperent: et dedit illis: et ejecit eos inde, et mundavit arcem a contaminationibus:
51And they entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month, in the year one hundred and seventy-one, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and harps, and cymbals, and psalteries, and hymns, and canticles, because the great enemy was destroyed out of Israel.E i Giudei vi entraron dentro ai ventitre del secondo mese, l'anno cento settant'uno con rami di palme, e cantando laude al suono di arpe cimbali, e lire, con inni e cantici perché era stato tolto via un nemico grande d'Israele.and they entered into it the three and twentith day of the second moneth, the yeare an hundreth seuentie one, with prayse, and boughes of palme trees, and harpes, and cymbals, & nables, and hymnes, and canticles, because the great enemie was destroyed out of Israel.et intraverunt in eam tertia et vigesima die secundi mensis, anno centesimo septuagesimo primo, cum laude, et ramis palmarum, et cinyris, et cymbalis, et nablis, et hymnis, et canticis, quia contritus est inimicus magnus ex Israël. 52And he ordained that these days should be kept every year with gladness.E Simone ordinò, che si solennizzassero ogni anno quei giorni con gaudio. And he ordayned that euerie yeare these dayes should be kept with gladnes. 53And he fortified the mountain of the temple that was near the castle, and he dwelt there himself, and they that were with him.E fortificò il monte del tempio, che era presso alla cittadella, e ivi abitò egli coi suoi. And he fortified the mount of the temple, that was by the castel, and he dwelt there him self, and they that were with him. 54And Simon saw that John, his son, was a valiant man for war: and he made him captain of all the forces: and he dwelt in Gazara.E Simone avendo riconosciuto, che Giovanni suo figliuolo era uomo di gran valore, lo creò capitano di tutte le schiere, ed egli facea residenza a Gazara. And Simon saw Iohn his sonne, that he was a valient man of warre: & he made him captayne of al the hosts: and he dwelt in Gazara.

13:39
Oversight. All sins in some sense proceed from ignorance.

Haydock
Thus, after a hard struggle, the independence of the Jews was acknowledged. (Haydock)

Calmet
Engines. Greek, elepo leis, denoting engines of a great size, invented by Demetrius at the siege of Rhodes, who was thence styled "the city taker." (Calmet)
Its top was covered with mortar, (Marcellin 23:9.) and the sides with raw hides and iron bars, so that fire or stones made no impression upon it, while people within moved it to batter the walls by means of wheels. When a breach was made, they jumped into the city, ver. 44. See Vitruvius 10:22.
13:47
Calmet
Idols, of a domestic kind. The city had been assigned to Juda, and must be purified, Josue 15:47., and Deuteronomy 7:25. (Calmet)
Worthington
Mercy is most pleasing to God and men, provided justice and religion be not injured. (Worthington)
13:48

Haydock
Days; the octave, or the 23rd of the second month, annually. (Haydock)
Calmet
This was like one of the days appointed, 1 Machabees 10:34. The festival was observed perhaps only during his reign. Josephus takes no notice of it: but informs us (Calmet) that Simon reflecting on the miseries inflicted on the city by this castle, and fearing lest it should fall again into the hands of the enemy, advised the people to level it to the ground; which they did in the space of three years. (Antiquities 13:11.) They did not commence immediately, as Sidetes reclaimed it three years hence. (Calmet)
13:53

13:20
Simon and his army marched to every place whithersoever they went.... That is, whithersoever Tryphon and his horsemen went in order to oppose them.
13:1
Simon the fourth general captaine of the Machabees, & highpriest excelled his bretheren in vvisdome, by the restimonie of his father. c. 2. v 65.
13:6
He vndertooke by al his endeuour to defend and deliuer his nation from danger, and to restore their former libertie.
13:17
Simon being vvise choise the lesse euil, and lesse danger. For if he had not sent that vvas demanded it was very like and almost cettaine, that Ionathas should be slaine, and it vvould haue bene imputed to Simon, that he had not taken iust care of his brothers life, vvherby the people vvould haue bene alienated from him, and perhaps haue reuolted from him, and also from religion. 13:54
This Iohn Hyreanus defended the countrie against inuaders, ch. 16.
13:8
13:13
13:14
14. ET UT COGNOVIT TRYPHON. — Tryphon, metuens Simonis copias, pellem leoninam in vulpinam mutavit, doloseque finxit se amicum, itaque fraudulenter a Simone centum talenta, ac duos filios Jonathæ pro ejus lytro extorsit.
13:15
15. In ratione regis, — q. d. in rationibus regis, sive in libris computuum invenimus Jonatham debere regi centum talenta: mitte ergo illa cum duobus filiis ejus obsidibus, et ego remittam tibi Jonatham. Centum talenta auri, si Attica fuerint, faciunt sexcenta millia aureorum; sin Hebræa, faciunt dupla amplius, nimirum millionem, et insuper ducenta millia aureorum; tantam ergo vim auri Simon misit Tryphoni pro fratre Jonatha redimendo.
13:17
13:20
20. ET GYRAVERUNT PER VIAM QUÆ DUCIT ADOR, — quæ est urbs Phœniciæ mari adjacens vicina Ptolemaidi, ac a Ptolemæo Dor vel Dora (unde Dores Græcos ortos dictosque opinantur nonnulli) vocatur. Josephus tamen, lib.
13:22
22. ERAT AUTEM NIX MULTA VALDE, (quæ impedivit Tryphonem ne posset ingredi et inferre annonam in arcem Sion): ET NON VENIT IN GALAADITIM.
13:30
13:31
31. TRYPHON AUTEM, CUM ITER FACERET CUM ANTIOCHO REGE ADOLESCENTE, DOLO OCCIDIT EUM, — uti dolo ceperat et occiderat Jonathan cum filiis. Modum necis enarrat Livii abbreviator, Epist. 55: « Alexandri filius, inquit, rex Syriæ, decem annos admodum habens, a Diodoro, qui Tryphon cognominabatur, tutore suo, per fraudem occisus est, corruptis quidem medicis, qui eum calculi dolore consumi ad populum mentiti, dum secant illum, occiderunt. » Eademque videtur Josephi sententia, lib. Eupatori successit frater Alexander Veles quem Ptolemæus Philometor in prælio interfecit; Alexandro successit hic Antiochus filius parvulus quem Tryphon necavit, ejusque regnum occupavit.
13:33
33. ET ÆDIFICAVIT (Simon contra Tryphonem, ne Judæam invaderet, uti invaserat regnum Asiæ,) PRÆSIDIA JUDÆÆ, — id est arces in quibus milites præsidiarios ad eas tutandas collocavit.
13:34
34. Et misit ad Demetrium regem ut faceret remissionem — a tributis et a jugo Græcorum, sive Seleucidarum, ut scilicet Judæa non esset illis subjecta, sed libera, uti ante fuerat. Concessit id Demetrius; unde tunc nova Æra constituta est, a qua Judæi numerare cœperunt annos, scilicet ab anno primo Simonis, ut dicitur, vers. 42. Porro Demetrius hic junior filius fuit Demetrii senioris, cognomine Nicanor, qui paulo ante a Tryphone fuerat regno ejectus, cap. xi, vers. 55, ac ibidem vers. ult. a Jonatha bis fusus fugatusque; nunc vero Tryphonem metuens cum Simone fœdus init, ideoque Judææ suam libertatem postliminio restituit. QUIA ACTUS OMNES TRYPHONIS (quibus Judæis gravia tributa et onera imposuerat) PER DIREPTIONEM (id est per subreptionem et apertam injustitiam prædationemque) FUERUNT GESTI; — unde Græca habent: Quia actus omnes Tryphonis erant rapina, ideoque rescindendi; unde ea rescidit Demetrius.
13:37
Hinc Joan. xii, rami palmarum vocantur βαΐα φοινίκων. Sic lib. II, cap. xiv, vers.
ANNO 170 ABLATUM EST JUGUM GRÆCORUM (Seleucidarum) AB ISRAEL. 42. ET CŒPIT POPULUS SCRIBERE (novam Æram ab hoc anno constituendo et inchoando) IN TABULIS ET GESTIS PUBLICIS: ANNO PRIMO SUB SIMONE SUMMO SACERDOTE. — Annus enim primus Simonis fuit 170 Græcorum quo Demetrius suo indulto libertatem hanc Judæis concessit.
13:43
43. APPLICUIT SIMON AD GAZAM. — Gazam subegerat Jonathas, cap. xi, vers.
I, vers. 21, 30 et 35, usque ad annum 171 Græcorum, ut hic dicitur, vers. 51. Addit Josephus Simonem arcem hanc plane diruisse et solo æquasse.
13:51
51. QUIA CONTRITUS EST INIMICUS MAGNUS EX ISRAEL. — Milites enim Seleucidarum Asiæ regum arcem Sionis insidentes infestissimi erant subjectæ Jerosolymæ templo, civibus omnibusque Judæis.
13:53
53. Et munivit montem templi, — q. d. Arcem in monte Sion juxta templum olim contra milites arcis jam dictæ a Juda Machabæo, cap. IV, vers. 60, exstructam, et ab impio Alcimo, cap. IX, vers. 54, destructam, iterumque a Jonatha, cap. x, vers.
48. Quare inde transiens, nunc in Jerusalem Gazam filio suo Joanni incolendam et custodiendam commisit. Ita Salianus.
13:11
IONATHAN (EBR. JĒHŌNĀTHĀN E JŌNĀTHĀN; VOLGATA I. E IONATHAS)
13:25
MODIN (SETTANTA ΜΟΔΕΙ͂Ν E ΜΩΔΕΙ͂Ν)
MODIN (Settanta μοδεῖν e μωδεῖν). - Città della Giudea, patria dei Maccabei (I Mach. 2, 1.15. 23) dove ebbero sepoltura Mathathia e i suoi due figli Giuda e Ionathan (I Mach. 2, 70; 9, 19; 13, 25. 30).
C.: I Mach.
13:34
… Cf. I Mach. 13, 34-43; 14, 38 sg. …
13:36
MACCABEI (GR. ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙ͂ΟΙ, VOLG. MACHABAEI)
… dove, secondo II Mach.
13, 43-48). A quel periodo appartengono alcune iscrizioni ebreo-grechi di minore importanza. …
13:49
ACRA (AKRA: GR. 'ἌΓΞΑ' «FORTEZZA»)
13:52
… Fu fortificato al tempo dei Maccabei (ibid. 6, 7; 13, 52; Eccl. 50, 1 sg.). …
