The people repent with fasting and sackcloth. The Levites confess God’s benefits, and the people’s ingratitude: they pray for them, and make a covenant with God.
The people repenting in fasting and sakcloth, put away their wiues of strange nations. 5. Esdras confesseth Gods benefites, and the peoples ingratitude. 32. prayeth for them, and maketh league with God.
1And in the four and twentieth day of the month the children of Israel came together with fasting and with sackcloth, and earth upon them.Ma il dì ventiquattro di quel mese i figliuoli d'Israele si raunarono, osservando il digiuno, vestiti di sacco, e coperti di terra.AND in the foure and twenteth day of the moneth the children of Israel came together in fasting and sackeclothes, and carth vpon them. 2And the seed of the children of Israel separated themselves from every stranger: and they stood, and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.E la stirpe de' figliuoli d'Israele fu separata da tutti i figliuoli stranieri: e stando dinanzi al Signore confessavano i loro peccati, e le iniquità de' padri loro. And the seede of the children of Israel was seperated from euerie strange childe: and they stood, and confessed their sinnes, and the iniquities of their fathers. 3And they rose up to stand: and they read in the book of the law of the Lord their God, four times in the day, and four times they confessed, and adored the Lord their God.E si alzarono in piedi: e fu fatta la lettura del libro della legge del Signore Dio loro quattro volte il giorno, e quattro volte lodavano, e adoravano il Signore Dio loro. And they rose vp to stand: and they read in the volume of the law of our Lord their God, foure times in a day, and four times they confessed, and adored our Lord their God.Et consurrexerunt ad standum: et legerunt in volumine legis Domini Dei sui, quater in die, et quater confitebantur, et adorabant Dominum Deum suum. 4And there stood up upon the step of the Levites, Josue, and Bani, and Cedmihel, Sabania, Bonni, Sarebias, Bani, and Chanani: and they cried with a loud voice to the Lord their God.E salirono al posto de' Leviti, Josuè, e Bani, e Cedmihel, Sabania, Bonni, Sarebia, Bani, e Chanani, e ad alta voce gridarono al Signore Dio loro. And there arose vpon the steppe of the Leuites Iosue, and Bani, Cedminel, Sabania, Bonni, Sarebias, Bani, and Chanani: and they cried with a lowde voice to our Lord their God.Surrexerunt autem super gradum Levitarum Josue, et Bani, et Cedmihel, Sabania, Bonni, Sarebias, Bani, et Chanani: et clamaverunt voce magna ad Dominum Deum suum. 5And the Levites Josue and Cedmihel, Bonni, Hasebnia, Serebia, Oduia, Sebnia, and Phathahia, said: Arise, bless the Lord your God from eternity to eternity: and blessed be the high name of thy glory with all blessing and praise.E questi Leviti, Josuè, e Cedmihel, Bonni, Hasebnia, Serebia, Odaia, Sebnia, Phathathia, dissero: Alzatevi; benedite il Signore Dio vostro (che è) ab eterno, e in eterno: e sia benedetto l'eccelso nome tuo con ogni benedizione, e laude. And the Leuites Iosue and Cedmihel, Bonni, Hasebnia, Serebia, Odaia, Sebnia, and Phathahia, said: Arise, Blesse our Lord your God from eternitie to eternitie: and let them blesse the high name of thy glorie in al blessing & praise.
6Thou thyself, O Lord alone, thou hast made heaven, and the heaven of heavens, and all the host thereof: the earth and all things that are in it: the seas and all that are therein: and thou givest life to all these things, and the host of heaven adoreth thee. Thou the same o Lord, alone thou hast made heauen, & al the host therof: the earth & al thinges that are in it: the seas and al thinges that are therin: and thou dost giue life to al these thinges, and the host of heauē adoreth thee. 7Thou O Lord God, art he who chosest Abram, and broughtest him forth out of the fire of the Chaldeans, and gavest him the name of Abraham. Thou the same o Lord God, which didst choose Abram, & broughtest him out of the fire of the Chaldees, and gauest him the name Abraham.Tu ipse, Domine Deus, qui elegisti Abram, et eduxisti eum de igne Chaldæorum, et posuisti nomen ejus Abraham: 8And thou didst find his heart faithful before thee: and thou madest a covenant with him, to give him the land of the Chanaanite, of the Hethite, and of the Amorrhite, and of the Pherezite, and of the Jebusite, and of the Gergezite, to give it to his seed: and thou hast fulfilled thy words, because thou art just.E conoscesti, come il suo cuore era fedele dinanzi a te: e facesti alleanza con lui, per dare a lui, e alla sua stirpe la terra de' Chananei, degli Hethei, e Amorrhei, e Pherezei, e Jebusei, e Geragezei: e adempisti la tua parola, perchè tu se'giusto. And thou didst finde his hart faithful before thee: and thou madest a couenante with him, that thou wouldest geue him the land of the Chananite, of the Hetheite, and of the Amorrheite, and of the Pherezeire, and of the Iebuseite, & of the Gergeseite, to geue vnto his seede: and thou hast fulfilled thy wordes, because thou art iust.et invenisti cor ejus fidele coram te, et percussisti cum eo fœdus ut dares ei terram Chananæi, Hethæi, et Amorrhæi, et Pherezæi, et Jebusæi, et Gergesæi, ut dares semini ejus: et implesti verba tua, quoniam justus es. 9And thou sawest the affliction of our fathers in Egypt: and thou didst hear their cry by the Red Sea.E mirasti l'afflizione de' padri nostri in Egitto: e udisti le loro grida presso al mar rosso. And thou sawest the afflicton of our fathers in Aegypt: & their crie thou didst heare vpon the Read sea.Et vidisti afflictionem patrum nostrorum in Ægypto, clamoremque eorum audisti super mare Rubrum.
10And thou shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharao, and upon all his servants, and upon the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them: and thou madest thyself a name, as it is at this day.E facesti segni, e prodigj sopra Pharaone, e sopra tutti i suoi servi, e sopra tutto il popolo di quel paese: perocché tu sapevi, com' eglino ci avean trattati superbamente: e ti facesti il nome, quale tu hai anche in oggi. And thou gauest signes & wonders in Pharao, and in al his seruants, and in al the people of his land: for thou didst know that they had done proudly against them: and thou madest thyself a name, as also at this day. 11And thou didst divide the sea before them, and they passed through the midst of the sea on dry land: but their persecutors thou threwest into the depth, as a stone into mighty waters.E apristi il mare dinanzi ad essi, e passaron per mezzo al mare asciutto: e i loro persecutori gettasti nell'abisso, come pietra che cade in acqua profonda. And thou didst diuide the sea before them, and they passed througth the midst of the sea in drie land: but their persecutors thou threwest into the depth, as a stone into the rough waters. 12And in a pillar of a cloud thou wast their leader by day, and in a pillar of fire by night, that they might see the way by which they went.E fosti loro condottiere in una colonna di nube il giorno, e in una colonna di fuoco la notte, affinchè vedessero la strada, per cui camminare. And in a piller of a cloude thou wast their leader by day, and in a piller of fire by night, that the way might appeare to them, by the which they went. 13Thou camest down also to mount Sinai, and didst speak with them from heaven, and thou gavest them right judgments, and the law of truth, ceremonies, and good precepts. To mount Sinai also thou didst descend, and spakest with them from heauen, and thou gauest them right iudgements, and the law of truth, ceremonies, and good preceptes.
14Thou madest known to them thy holy sabbath, and didst prescribe to them commandments, and ceremonies, and the law by the hand of Moses thy servant.E facesti loro conoscere il santo tuo sabato, e i tuoi insegnamenti, e le tue cerimonie, e la legge intimasti loro per mezzo di Mosè tuo servo.Thy sanctified Sabbath thou didst shew them, and the commandements, and ceremonies, and the law thou didst command them in the hand of Moyses thy seruant.et sabbatum sanctificatum tuum ostendisti eis: et mandata, et cæremonias, et legem præcepisti eis in manu Moysi servi tui. 15And thou gavest them bread from heaven in their hunger, and broughtest forth water for them out of the rock in their thirst, and thou saidst to them that they should go in, and possess the land, upon which thou hadst lifted up thy hand to give it them.E desti anche ad essi pane dal cielo, quand'erano affamati, e quando ebber sete, facesti scaturire acqua da un masso; e dicesti loro, che entrassero al possesso della terra, cui tu, alzata la mano, avevi promesso di dare ad essi.Bread also from heauen thou gauest them in their hunger, and water out of the rocke thou didst bring forth to them thirsting, and thou saidest to them that they should enter in, and possesse the land, vpon which thou didst lift vp thy hand to diliuer it them. 16But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks and hearkened not to thy commandments. But they and our fathers did proudly, and hardned their neckes and heard not thy cōmandements. 17And they would not hear, and they remembered not thy wonders which thou hadst done for them. And they hardened their necks, and gave the head to return to their bondage, as it were by contention. But thou, a forgiving God, gracious, and merciful, longsuffering, and full of compassion, didst not forsake them.E non vollero intendere, e si scordarono delle mirabili cose fatte da te a pro loro. Ma tu Dio buono, clemente, e misericordioso, paziente, e di molta benignità, non gli abbandonasti,And they would not heare, and they remembred not thy merueylous workes which thou hast done to them. And they hardned their neckes, and gaue the head to returne to their seruitude, as it were by contention. But thou a propitious God, and gratious, and merciful, long suffering and of much compassion, didst not forsake them.
18Yea when they had made also to themselves a molten calf, and had said: This is thy God, that brought thee out of Egypt: and had committed great blasphemies:Neppur quando si fecero quel vitello di getto, e dissero: Questo (o Israele) è il tuo Dio, che ti ha tratto dall'Egitto: e commisero bestemmie grandi.Yea and when they had made to them selues a molten calfe, and had said: This is thy God, which brought thee out of Aegypt: and they did great blasphemies.et quidem cum fecissent sibi vitulum conflatilem, et dixissent: Iste est deus tuus, qui eduxit te de Ægypto: feceruntque blasphemias magnas: 19Yet thou, in thy many mercies, didst not leave them in the desert: the pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day to lead them in the way, and the pillar of fire by night to shew them the way by which they should go.Ma tu, perchè grandi sono le tue misericordie, non li lasciasti nel deserto: la colonna della nube, che mostrava loro la strada, non fu sottratta ad essi di giorno, né la colonna di fuoco, da cui eran guidati la notte nel loro viaggio. But thou in thy manie mercies didst not leaue them in the desert: the piller of the cloude departed not from them by day to lead them into the way, and the piller of fire by night to shew them the way by which they should goe.tu autem in misericordiis tuis multis non dimisisti eos in deserto: columna nubis non recessit ab eis per diem ut duceret eos in viam, et columna ignis per noctem ut ostenderet eis iter per quod ingrederentur. 20And thou gavest them thy good Spirit to teach them, and thy manna thou didst not withhold from their mouth, and thou gavest them water for their thirst.E desti loro per maestro il tuo spirito buono, e non togliesti loro di bocca la tua manna, e assetati ebbero acqua da te.And thou gauest them thy good spirite, which should teach them, and thy Manna thou didst not withhold from their mouth, and thou gauest them water in thirst. 21Forty years didst thou feed them in the desert, and nothing was wanting to them: their garments did not grow old, and their feet were not worn. Fourtie yeares didst thou feede them in the desert, and nothing was wanting to them, their garmentes waxed not old, and their feete not worne.
22And thou gavest them kingdoms, and nations, and didst divide lots for them: and they possessed the land of Sehon, and the land of the king of Hesebon, and the land of Og king of Basan.E desti in dominio loro i regni, e i popoli, e desti loro a sorte le loro porzioni: ed ei divennero padroni della terra di Sehon, e della terra del re Hesebon, e della terra di Og re di Basan. And thou gauest them kingdomes, and peoples, and didst part lottes vnto them: and they possessed the land of Sehon, and the land of the king Hesebon, and the land of Og the king of Basan.Et dedisti eis regna, et populos, et partitus es eis sortes: et possederunt terram Sehon, et terram regis Hesebon, et terram Og regis Basan. 23And thou didst multiply their children as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them to the land concerning which thou hadst said to their fathers, that they should go in and possess it.E moltiplicasti i loro figliuoli, come le stelle del cielo, e li collocasti nel paese, in cui avevi detto a' padri loro di fargli entrare per averne il dominio. And thou didst multiplie their children as the starres of heauen, & brought them to the land wherof thou hadst said to their fathers, that they should enter and possesse it.Et multiplicasti filios eorum sicut stellas cæli, et adduxisti eos ad terram de qua dixeras patribus eorum ut ingrederentur et possiderent. 24And the children came and possessed the land, and thou didst humble before them the inhabitants of the land, the Chanaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as it pleased them.E i figliuoli vennero, e occuparono questa terra, e umiliasti dinanzi a loro i Chananei abitatori della medesima terra, e li desti in loro potere, coi loro re, e coi popoli del paese, affinchè li trattassero, come loro piaceva. And the children came, and possessed the land, and thou didst humble before them the inhabiters of the land, the Chananeites, and gauest them into their hand, and their kinges, and the peoples of the land, that they might doe to them as it pleased them. 25And they took strong cities and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods: cisterns made by others, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: and they ate, and were filled, and became fat, and abounded with delight in thy great goodness. They therfore tooke the fensed cities and fatte ground, and possessed houses ful of al goodes: cesternes made by others, vineyardes, and oliuetes, & manie trees that bare fruite: and they did eate, and were filled, and became fatte, and abounded with delicious thinges in thy great goodnes.
26But they provoked thee to wrath, and departed from thee, and threw thy law behind their backs: and they killed thy prophets, who admonished them earnestly to return to thee: and they were guilty of great blasphemies. But they prouoked thee to wrath, & departed from thee, and threw thy law behind their backes: & they killed thy prophetes, which admonished them ernestly to returne to thee: and they did great blasphemies. 27And thou gavest them into the hands of their enemies, and they afflicted them. And in the time of their tribulation they cried to thee, and thou heardest from heaven, and according to the multitude of thy tender mercies thou gavest them saviours, to save them from the hands of their enemies.E tu li desti in potere de' loro nemici, i quali gli oppressero. And thou gauest them into the handes of their enemies, and they afflicted them. And in the time of their tribulation they cried to thee, & thou from heauen didst heare, and according to thy manie cōpassions gauest them sauiours, that should saue them from the hand of their enemies. 28But after they had rest, they returned to do evil in thy sight: and thou leftest them in the hand of their enemies, and they had dominion over them. Then they returned, and cried to thee: and thou heardest from heaven, and deliveredst them many times in thy mercies.E quand'ebber riposo, tornarono a fare il male dinanzi a te: e tu gli abbandonasti in potere de' loro nemici, i quali li dominarono. And when they had rested, they returned to do euil in thysight: & thou didst leaue them in the hand of their enemies, and they possessed them. And they returned, & cried to thee: & thou heardest from heauen, and deliueredst thē in thy mercies, manie times. 29And thou didst admonish them to return to thy law. But they dealt proudly, and hearkened not to thy commandments, but sinned against thy judgments, which if a man do, he shall live in them: and they withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.E gli esortasti a ritornare alla tua legge. And thou didst admonish them that they should returne to thy law. But they did proudly, & heard not thy cōmandmentes, and sinned in thy iudgementes, which a man should do, and shal liue in them, and they gaue the reuolting shoulder, and hardned their necke, neither did they heare.
30And thou didst forbear with them for many years, and didst testify against them by thy spirit by the hand of thy prophets: and they heard not, and thou didst deliver them into the hand of the people of the lands.E pazientasti con essi per molti anni, e gli ammonisti per mezzo del tuo spirito per bocca de' tuoi profeti: ed essi non ascoltarono, e tu li desti in balia dei popoli delle genti. And thou didst prolong manie yeares ouer them, and didst testefie to charge them in thy spirit by the hand of thy Prophetes: and they heard not, and thou didst deliuer them into the hand of the peoples of the nations. 31Yet in thy very many mercies thou didst not utterly consume them, nor forsake them: because thou art a merciful and gracious God.Ma per le tue misericordie, che sono moltissime, tu non li volesti consunti, ne gli abbandonasti: perchè tu se' un Dio di benignità, e di clemenza. But in thy very many mercies thou madest them not consumption, neither didst thou forsake them: because a God of compassions and gratious art thou.In misericordiis autem tuis plurimis non fecisti eos in consumptionem, nec dereliquisti eos: quoniam Deus miserationum et clemens es tu. 32Now therefore our God, great, strong, and terrible, who keepest covenant and mercy, turn not away from thy face all the labour which hath come upon us, upon our kings, and our princes, and our priests, and our prophets, and our fathers, and all the people from the days of the king of Assur, until this day.Adesso adunque, Dio nostro grande, forte, e terribile, che mantieni il patto, e la misericordia, non voler porre in non cale tutti que' mali, che sono caduti addosso a noi, ai nostri re, ai nostri principi, ai nostri sacerdoti, ai nostri profeti, e ai padri nostri, e a tutto il tuo popolo dal tempo del re di Assur fin a questo di.Now therfore O our God, great, strong, and terrible, keeping couenant and mercie, turne not away from thy face al the labour, which hath found vs, our Kinges, and our Princes, and our Priests, and our Prophetes, and our fathers, and al the people from the daies of the king of Assur, vntil this day. 33And thou art just in all things that have come upon us: because thou hast done truth, but we have done wickedly. And thou art iust in al thinges, that haue come vpon vs: because thou hast done truth, but we haue done wickedly.
34Our kings, our princes, our priests, and our fathers have not kept thy law, and have not minded thy commandments, and thy testimonies which thou hast testified among them.I nostri re, i nostri principi, i nostri sacerdoti, e i padri nostri non adempirono la tua legge, e non ubbidirono a' tuoi comandamenti, e agli ordini, che tu avevi loro intimati. Our Kinges, our Princes, our Priestes, and our fathers haue not done thy law, and haue not attended thy commandmentes, and thy testimonies which thou hast testified among them. 35And they have not served thee in their kingdoms, and in thy manifold goodness, which thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land, which thou deliveredst before them, nor did they return from their most wicked devices. And they in their reignes, and in thy manifold goodnes, which thou gauest them, and in the land most large and fatte, which thou didst deliuer in their sight, serued not thee, nor returned from their most wicked deuises. 36Behold we ourselves this day are bondmen: and the land, which thou gavest our fathers, to eat the bread thereof, and the good things thereof, and we ourselves are servants in it.Ecco che noi medesimi oggi dì siamo servi; e nella terra data da te a' padri nostri, perchè mangiassero il suo pane, e i suoi frutti, in essa noi stessi siamo servi.Behold we our selues this day are bondmen: and the land, which thou gauest our fathers, that they should eate the bread therof, and the good thinges that are therof, and our selues are seruantes in it.Ecce nos ipsi hodie servi sumus: et terra quam dedisti patribus nostris ut comederent panem ejus, et quæ bona sunt ejus, et nos ipsi servi sumus in ea. 37And the fruits thereof grow up for the kings, whom thou hast set over us for our sins, and they have dominion over our bodies, and over our beasts, according to their will, and we are in great tribulation.E le sue biade moltiplicano in pro dei regi, ai quali tu ci hai sottoposti pe' nostri peccati; ei sono padroni de' nostri corpi, e de' nostri giumenti a lor talento; e noi siamo in grande afflizione. And the fruites therof are multiplied to the kinges, whom thon hast sette ouer vs for our sinnes, and they haue dominion ouer our bodies, and ouer our beastes, according to their wil, and we are in great tribulation.Et fruges ejus multiplicantur regibus quos posuisti super nos propter peccata nostra: et corporibus nostris dominantur, et jumentis nostris secundum voluntatem suam: et in tribulatione magna sumus.
38And because of all this we ourselves make a covenant, and write it, and our princes, our Levites, and our priests sign it.A riflesso di tutte queste cose pertanto noi stessi facciamo per iscritto il patto, e lo sottoscrivono i nostri capi, i nostri Leviti, e i nostri sacerdoti.Therfore vpon al these thinges we our selues make a couenant, and write, and our Princes, our Leuites, and our Priestes signe it.Super omnibus ergo his nos ipsi percutimus fœdus, et scribimus: et signant principes nostri, Levitæ nostri, et sacerdotes nostri.

On their fasts, they refrained from all meat, as well as from work, spending their time in prayer. They began at the first hour, and continued their exercises of devotion till the third, when they recommenced for other three hours. They did the like at the sixth and ninth hours; hearing the law, then prostrating themselves to confess their sins. Afterwards they rose to join with the Levites in praising the Lord. (Calmet)

St Cyril of Jerusalem † AD 386 The Catechetical Lectures of S. Cyril 16.28
… And as we have it in Chronicles, Azariah , in the time of King Asa, and Jahaziel in the time of King Jehoshaphat, partook of the Holy Ghost; and again, another Azariah, he who was stoned . And Ezra says, Thou gavest also Thy good Spirit to instruct them
9:26
St Cyprian of Carthage † AD 258 Three Books of Testimonies Against the Jews 1.3
… and I have remained solitary, and they seek my life, to take it away from me.” In Ezra also: “They have fallen away from Thee, and have cast Thy law behind their backs, and have killed Thy prophets which testified against them that they should return to Thee.”
9:33
St John Chrysostom † AD 407 The Homilies on the Statues to the People of Antioch 17.15
… Let us, then, all in common prostrate ourselves before God; and both while we are here, and when we are at home, let us say, “Thou, O Lord, art righteous in all things which Thou hast done towards us; for Thou hast brought upon us by a just judgment whatever Thou hast brought.”
9:1
1. AND DUST (that is, powder and ashes) UPON THEM. — Note here three offices of penance, equally as symbols. The first is to sprinkle the head with ashes, as if confessing that we are vile and ashy, inasmuch as we are formed from ashes and shall return to ashes, according to that in Genesis III, 19: "Thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return." The second is public and solemn fasting. The third, sackcloth, or haircloth.
9:2
2. The seed of the children of Israel has been separated from every FOREIGN SON, — that is to say, they separated themselves from gentile wives, and the children whom they had begotten from them, they separated from the children whom they had begotten from Israelite wives in the manner which I said in I Esdras X, 3.
9:3
3. AND THEY ROSE UP (the Levites) TO STAND, — in a higher place, from which they could be seen and heard by the people. And they confessed four times, — that is to say, at each reading they sang to God psalms and hymns, by which they celebrated God's beneficence, and confessed the misdeeds of the ungrateful people, and humbly begged pardon for them from God.
9:6
6. HEAVEN OF HEAVENS, (that is the highest, vastest and most excellent heaven, namely the empyrean;) and all their host, — namely all the angels and all the stars.
9:7
7. THOU DIDST CHOOSE ABRAM, AND THOU DIDST LEAD HIM OUT OF THE FIRE OF THE CHALDEANS. — You will say: The Hebrew and the Septuagint have, from Ur of the Chaldeans, and thus our Douay-Rheims translated it in Genesis XI, 31, and elsewhere. I answer: Ur or Ura, as Josephus has it, is the proper name of a city of the Chaldeans, from which God led Abraham, which Eupolemus in Eusebius, book IX of the Preparation, chapter IV, calls Camirene. It seems to have been named from the worship of fire (for ur signifies this in Hebrew) which, as St. Jerome testifies in his Questions on Genesis, the Chaldeans worshipped as God. Just as Heliopolis in Egypt was named from the worship of the sun: for "Heliopolis" means the same as the city of the sun; and therefore our Douay-Rheims, in order to interpret the Hebrew name ur, translated it as fire. Whence also certain Bibles write fire in this place with a capital letter I, as if it were the proper name of a city; for indeed here there is an allusion to Genesis XI, 31, where it is said: "I led them out of Ur of the Chaldeans;" for thus also elsewhere often our Douay-Rheims interprets the etymologies of Hebrew proper names, because in them lies hidden some mystery, or force and energy, as in Judges XV, 19, Genesis XXVI, 20 and 22. Hence secondly, Ur can be taken as not a proper name, but an appellative, so as to signify fire, that is pressure and affliction: just as also in Psalm XVI, 3, and Psalm LXV, 12; for Abraham suffered many afflictions from the Chaldeans, because he would not worship fire, which they, equally with the Persians, worshipped as God, as Josephus testifies in book I of the Antiquities VIII, and St. Augustine in book XVI of the City of God, chapter XIII. Indeed it is the tradition of the Hebrews that for this reason Abraham was cast into fire, but was miraculously freed by God, which St. Jerome approves in his Questions on Genesis. Nor is it surprising that Josephus, Philo, and St. Paul in Hebrews XI, do not mention this matter (which Pererius objects), because they generally relate only those things which exist in the Scriptures, as Josephus often professes of himself. See what is said on Genesis XI, 31.
9:10
10. AND THOU DIDST GIVE SIGNS AND WONDERS UPON PHARAOH, — namely the ten plagues, by which God struck Pharaoh, so as to compel him to let the Hebrews go into Chanaan. The Levites here celebrate the magnificence and beneficence of God, recounting all that God did for the Hebrews in Egypt and Chanaan; namely that He afflicted Egypt for them with ten plagues, that He gave them a pillar of fire as a guide of the way, likewise manna, the law, water from the rock, the land of Chanaan. Whence they confess likewise the ingratitude of the people disobedient to God. And so this their confession and prayer is as it were a compendium of the books of the Pentateuch, Judges and Kings.
9:15
15. Thou didst also give them bread from heaven, — namely manna, concerning which see Exodus XVI. THOU DIDST LIFT UP THY HAND, — that is thou didst swear. For we swear with hand lifted up, as if invoking God as a witness.
9:17
17. AND THEY GAVE A HEAD. — Vatablus, as they chose, that is they wished to choose a leader, who would lead them back into Egypt to their former servitude, Numbers XIV. Secondly more simply, "they gave a head so as to turn back," that is with hardened neck, as was said before, and with hardened head they stubbornly wished to return into Egypt. Thus in verse 29, it is said: "They gave a shoulder turning away and hardened their neck."
9:32
32. TURN NOT AWAY THY FACE (but continually look upon us with benign eyes, so that thou mayest have compassion on us and have mercy on us) from all our Labor (from all our troubles), FROM THE DAYS OF THE KING OF ASSUR, — who in the sixth year of Hezekiah led the ten tribes captive into Assyria.
9:33
33. THOU HAST MADE TRUTH, — that is thou hast truly fulfilled, thou hast truly exhibited the rewards which thou hadst promised, and the punishments which thou hadst threatened to transgressors.
9:37
37. The fruits are multiplied to kings, — that is to say, Judea indeed produces many fruits, but not for us, but for the kings of the Persians, to whom we are compelled to pay them as tribute.
9:38
38. Over all these things therefore, — that is to say, For all these things therefore, so that thou mayest have mercy on us, behold with a new promise and covenant we pledge ourselves, having cast aside idols and crimes, henceforth to serve thee alone faithfully and constantly forever. AND WE WRITE — the letters of this covenant which we make with thee, and we cause it to be subscribed and sealed in the name of all by our Princes, whose names shall be set forth in the following chapter.

… To achieve this latter goal and to respect certain rabbinic legends (cf. Josh. 14, 15; Neh. 9, 7), he sometimes neglected accuracy somewhat: but in general even the critics most prejudiced against the great biblical scholar today agree in noting the perfection of the work. …

… The A. then disappear from history; only the memory of them remained (Ezek. 9:1; Neh. 9:8; Judg. 5:20). In their land of origin the Phoenicians triumphed, who were perhaps a new wave of Canaanites closely akin to the Amorite group.
Girgashites (Hebrew Girgāshī; Septuagint Germachai, Latinized as Gergesites)
… In the Bible the G. are mentioned very few times (Gen. 10:19; 15:21; Deut. 7:1; Ios. 3:10; 24:11; Neh. 9:8) and always with a stereotyped phraseology, which lists the various clans or tribes of pre-Israelite Palestine. …

9:11
… The miraculous crossing of the Red Sea is a historical fact such that it cannot be suppressed without shaking the whole edifice of the Old Testament (Ex. 14; 15:4; 22; Num. 33:8; Deut. 11:14; Josh. 2:10; 4:24; 24:7; Ps. 105 [106]:8; Id. 11:16; Neh. 9:11; Wis. 10:8; 1 Macc. 4:9; Acts 7:36).

Evident, in such conjunctures, was the need for a leader, who was sought (cf. Judg. 10, 18; 11, 6.8), or accepted, offered by circumstances, that he might be the defender, the "liberator" (Judg. 3, 9; cf. Neh. 9, 27) of Israel.

Against the idolatrous institutions and practices of divination and magic, Jahweh, from the very beginnings of the chosen nation, established the prophets as the only spokesmen and interpreters of his thought and his will (Deut. 18:9-22; Num. 23:23; cf. Am. 2:10 ff.; Ex. 7:25; Zach. 7:12; Neh. 9:30), giving them as an unmistakable sign of recognition, besides moral worth, fidelity to Jahweh and to his precepts, the charism of predicting the future (Deut. 18:22; Is. 41:22 …
