1In the seven and twentieth year of Jeroboam, king of Israel, reigned Azarias, son of Amasias, king of Juda.L'anno ventesimo settimo di Geroboam re d'Israele, regnò Azaria figliuolo di Amasia re di Giuda.IN the seuen and twenteth yeare of Ieroboam the king of Israel reigned Azarias the sonne of Amasias the king of Iuda.Anno vigesimo septimo Jeroboam regis Israël, regnavit Azarias filius Amasiæ regis Juda. 2He was sixteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned two and fifty years in Jerusalem: the name of his mother was Jechelia, of Jerusalem. He was sixtene yeares old, when he began to reigne, and two and fiftie yeares he reigned in Ierusalem: the name of his mother was Iechelia of Ierusalem,Sedecim annorum erat cum regnare cœpisset, et quinquaginta duobus annis regnavit in Jerusalem: nomen matris ejus Jechelia de Jerusalem. 3And he did that which was pleasing before the Lord, according to all that his father, Amasias, had done. And he did that which was liked before our Lord, according to al thinges that his father Amasias did.Fecitque quod erat placitum coram Domino, juxta omnia quæ fecit Amasias pater ejus. 4But the high places he did not destroy, for the people sacrificed, and burnt incense in the high places. But the excelses he destroyed not: as yet the people sacrificed, and burnt incense in the excelses. 5And the Lord struck the king, so that he was a leper unto the day of his death, and he dwelt in a free house apart: but Joatham, the king’s son, governed the palace, and judged the people of the land.E il Signore percosse il re, ed egli fu lebbroso fino al punto di sua morte: ed egli viveva a parte in una casa fuori di mano; e Joatham figliuolo del re governava la corte, e rendeva giustizia al popolo del paese. And our Lord stroke the king, and he was a leper vntil the day of his death, and he dwelt in a free house a part: but Ioathan the kinges sonne gouerned the palace, and iudged the people of the land.Percussit autem Dominus regem, et fuit leprosus usque in diem mortis suæ, et habitabat in domo libera seorsum: Joatham vero filius regis gubernabat palatium, et judicabit populum terræ.
6And the rest of the acts of Azarias, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Juda? But the rest of the wordes of Azarias, and al that he did, are not these thinges writen in the Booke of the wordes of the daies of the kinges of Iuda?Reliqua autem sermonum Azariæ, et universa quæ fecit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Juda ? 7And Azarias slept with his fathers: and they buried him with his ancestors in the city of David, and Joatham, his son, reigned in his stead.E Azaria si addormentò co' padri suoi, e lo seppellirono co' suoi maggiori nella città di Davidde, e Joatham suo figliuolo gli succedette nel regno. And Azarias slept with his fathers: and they buried him with his ancetors in the citie of Dauid, and Ioathan his sonne reigned for him.Et dormivit Azarias cum patribus suis: sepelieruntque eum cum majoribus suis in civitate David, et regnavit Joatham filius ejus pro eo. 8In the eight and thirtieth year of Azarias, king of Juda, reigned Zacharias, son of Jeroboam, over Israel, in Samaria, six months:L'anno trentesimo ottavo di Azaria re di Giuda regnò Zacharia figliuolo di Geroboam sopra Israele in Samaria per sei mesi:In the eight and thirteth yeare of Azarias the king of Iuda, reigned Zacharias the sonne of Ieroboam ouer Israel in Samaria sixe monethes:Anno trigesimo octavo Azariæ regis Juda, regnavit Zacharias filius Jeroboam super Israël in Samaria sex mensibus. 9And he did that which is evil before the Lord, as his fathers had done: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nabat, who made Israel to sin.Ed ei fece il male nel cospetto del Signore, come avean fatto i padri suoi: egli non si allontanò dai peccati di Geroboam figliuolo di Nabath, il quale indusse Israele a peccare.and he did that which is euil before our Lord, as his fathers had done: he departed not from the sinnes of Ieroboam the sonne of Nabat, who made Israel to sinne. 10And Sellum, the son of Jabes, conspired against him: and struck him publicly, and killed him, and reigned in his place.E Sellum figliuolo di Jabes ordì una congiura contro di lui: e lo assalì alla scoperta, e lo uccise, e regnò in sua vece. And Sellum the sonne of Iabes conspired against him: and smote him openly, killed him, and reigned for him.
11Now the rest of the acts of Zacharias, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel? But the rest of the wordes of Zacharias, are not these writen in the Booke of the wordes of the dayes of the kinges of Israel?Reliqua autem verborum Zachariæ, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël ? 12This was the word of the Lord, which he spoke to Jehu, saying: Thy children, to the fourth generation, shall sit upon the throne of Israel. And so it came to pass. This is the word of our Lord, which he spake to Iehu, saying: Thy children shal sit vnto the fourth generation vpon the throne of Israel. And so it came to passe. 13Sellum, the son of Jabes, began to reign in the nine and thirtieth year of Azarias, king of Juda: and reigned one month in Samaria. Sellum the sone of Iabes reigned the nine and thirteth yeare of Azarias the king of Iuda: and reigned one moneth in Samaria.Sellum filius Jabes regnavit trigesimo novo anno Azariæ regis Juda: regnavit autem uno mense in Samaria. 14And Manahem, the son of Gadi, went up from Thersa, and he came into Samaria, and struck Sellum, the son of Jabes, in Samaria, and slew him, and reigned in his stead. And Manahem the sonne of Gadi went vp from Thersa: and he came into Samaria, and smote Sellum the sonne of Iabes in Samaria, and slew him, & reigned for him.Et ascendit Manahem filius Gadi de Thersa, venitque in Samariam, et percussit Sellum filium Jabes in Samaria, et interfecit eum: regnavitque pro eo. 15And the rest of the acts of Sellum, and his conspiracy which he made, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel? But the rest of the wordes of Sellum, & his conspiracie, wherwith he wrought treason, are not these thinges written in the Booke of the wordes of the dayes of the kinges of Israel?
16Then Manahem destroyed Thapsa and all that were in it, and the borders thereof from Thersa, because they would not open to him: and he slew all the women thereof that were with child, and ripped them up.Allora fu che Manahem espugnò Thapsa, e uccise tutti i suoi abitanti, e devastò tutti i suoi confini fino da Thersa, perchè non avean voluto aprir gli le porte; e tutte le donne gravide mise a morte, facendole sparare. Then Manahem stroke Thapsa and al that were in it and the borders therof from Thersa, for they would not open vnto him: and he slew al wemen therof that were withchilde, and ripped them. 17In the nine and thirtieth year of Azarias, king of Juda, reigned Manahem, son of Gadi, over Israel, ten years, in Samaria.L'anno trentesimo nono di Azaria re di Giuda, regnò Manahem figliuolo di Gadi sopra Israele in Samaria per dieci anni.In the nine and thirteth yeare of Azarias the king of Iuda, reigned Manahem the sonne of Gadi ouer Israel ten yeares in Samaria.Anno trigesimo nono Azariæ regis Juda, regnavit Manahem filius Gadi super Israël decem annis in Samaria. 18And he did that which was evil before the Lord: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who made Israel to sin, all his days. And he did that which was euil before our Lord: he departed not from the sinnes of Ieroboam the sonne of Nabat, who made Israel to sinne al his dayes. 19And Phul, king of the Assyrians, came into the land, and Manahem gave Phul a thousand talents of silver to aid him and to establish him in the kingdom. Phul also the king of the Assyrians came into the land, and Manahem gaue to Phul a thousand ralentes of siluer, that he should ayde him, & establish his kingdom.Veniebat Phul rex Assyriorum in terram, et dabat Manahem Phul mille talenta argenti, ut esset ei in auxilium, et firmaret regnum ejus. 20And Manahem laid a tax upon Israel, on all that were mighty and rich, to give the king of the Assyrians, each man fifty sicles of silver: so the king of the Assyrians turned back, and did not stay in the land.E Manahem fece pagare questo argento dai potenti, e facoltosi d'Israele a ragione di cinquanta sicli d'argento per testa, per darlo al re degli Assiri. And Manahem put a taxe of siluer vpon Israel, on them that were mightie and riche to geue the king of the Assyrians, fiftie sicles of siluer euerie man: and the king of the Assyrians returned, and taried not in the land.
21And the rest of the acts of Manahem, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel? But the rest of the wordes of Manahem, and al that he did, are not these thinges writen in the Booke of the wordes of the daies of the kinges of Israel?Reliqua autem sermonum Manahem, et universa quæ fecit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël ? 22And Manahem slept with his fathers: and Phaceia, his son, reigned in his stead.E Manahem si addormentò co' padri suoi: e gli succedette nel regno Phaceia suo figliuolo. And Manahem slept with his fathers: and Phaceia his sonne reigned for him.Et dormivit Manahem cum patribus suis: regnavitque Phaceia filius ejus pro eo. 23In the fiftieth year of Azarias, king of Juda, reigned Phaceia, the son of Manahem, over Israel, in Samaria, two years.L'anno cinquantesimo di Azaria re di Giuda, regnò Phaceia figliuolo di Manahem sopra Israele in Samaria per due anni:In the fifteth yeare of Azarias the king of Inda reigned Phaceia the sonne of Manahem ouer Israel in Samria two yeares:Anno quinquagesimo Azariæ regis Juda, regnavit Phaceia filius Manahem super Israël in Samaria biennio. 24And he did that which was evil before the Lord: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who made Israel to sin.E fece il male nel cospetto del Signore: non si allontanò dai peccati di Geroboam figliuolo di Nabath, il quale indusse Israele a peccare.and he did that which was euil before our Lord: he departed not from the sinnes of Ieroboam the sonne of Nabat, who made Israel to sinne. 25And Phacee the son of Romelia, his captain, conspired against him, and smote him in Samaria, in the tower of the king’s house, near Argob, and near Arie, and with him fifty men of the sons of the Galaadites, and he slew him, and reigned in his stead.E ordì congiura contro di lui Phacee figliuolo di Romelia, suo capitano, e lo assalì in Samaria nella torre della casa reale vicino ad Argob, e ad Arie, avendo seco cinquanta uomini di Galaad, e lo uccise, e gli succedette nel regno. And Phacee the sonne of Romelia, his captaine conspired against him, and stoke him in Samaria, in the towre of the kinges house beside, Argob and beside Arie, and with him fiftie men of the children of the Galaadites, and he slewe him, and reigned for him.
26And the rest of the acts of Phaceia, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel? But the rest of the wordes of Phaceia & al that he did, are not these things written in the Booke of the wordes of the daies of the kings of Israel.Reliqua autem sermonum Phaceia, et universa quæ fecit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël ? 27In the two and fiftieth year of Azarias, king of Juda, reigned Phacee, the son of Romelia, over Israel, in Samaria, twenty years.L'anno cinquantesimo secondo di Azaria re di Giuda, regnò Phacee figliuolo di Romelia sopra Israele in Samaria per venti anni.In the two and fifteth yeares of Azarias the king of Iuda reigned Phacee the sonne Romelia ouer Israel in Samaria twentie yeares.Anno quinquagesimo secundo Azariæ regis Juda, regnavit Phacee filius Romeliæ super Israël in Samaria viginti annis. 28And he did that which was evil before the Lord: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nabat, who made Israel to sin. And he did that which was euil before our Lord: he departed not from the sinnes of Ieroboam the sonne of Nabat, who made Israel to sinne. 29In the days of Phacee, king of Israel, came Theglathphalasar, king of Assyria, and took Aion, and Abel Domum Maacha, and Janoe, and Cedes, and Asor, and Galaad, and Galilee, and all the land of Nephthali: and carried them captives into Assyria. In the daies of Phacee the king of Israel came Theglath phalasar the king of Assur, & tooke Aion, and Abel the house of Maachat and Ianoe, and Cedes, and Asor, and Galaad, and Galilee, and al the land of Nepthali: and transported them vnto the Assyrians. In diebus Phacee regis Israël, venit Theglathphalasar rex Assur, et cepit Ajon, et Abel-Domum, Maacha et Janoë, et Cedes, et Asor, et Galaad, et Galilæam, et universam terram Nephthali: et transtulit eos in Assyrios. 30Now Osee, son of Ela, conspired, and formed a plot against Phacee, the son of Romelia, and struck him, and slew him: and reigned in his stead in the twentieth year of Joatham, the son of Ozias.E Osea figliuolo di Eia fece congiura, e tese insidie a Phacee figliuolo i Romelia, e lo assalì, e lo uccise, e regnò in sua vece l'anno ventesimo di Joatham figliuolo di Ozia. And Osee the sonne of Ela conspired, and lay in wayte against Phacee the sonne of Romelia, and stroke him, and slew him: and he reigned for him the twentith yeare of Ioatham the sonne of Ozias.
31But the rest of the acts of Phacee, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Israel? But the rest of the wordes of Phacee, and al that he did, are not these things written in the Booke of the wordes of the dayes of the kings of Israel?Reliqua autem sermonum Phacee, et universa quæ fecit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël ? 32In the second year of Phacee, the son of Romelia king of Israel, reigned Joatham, son of Ozias, king of Juda.L'anno secondo di Phacee figliuolo di Romelia re d'Israele, cominciò a regnare Joatham figliuolo di Ozia re di Giuda. In the second yeare of Phacee the sonne of Romelia the king of Israel, reigned Ioatham the sonne of Ozias the king of Iuda.Anno secundo Phacee filii Romeliæ regis Israël, regnavit Joatham filius Oziæ regis Juda. 33He was five and twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: the name of his mother was Jerusa, the daughter of Sadoc. Fiue and twentie yeares old was he when he began to reigne, and sixtene yeares he reigned in Ierusalem: the name of his mother was Ierusa, the daughter of Sadoc.Viginti quinque annorum erat cum regnare cœpisset, et sedecim annis regnavit in Jerusalem: nomen matris ejus Jerusa filia Sadoc. 34And he did that which was right before the Lord: according to all that his father Ozias had done, so did he.Ed egli fece quel, che era grato nel cospetto del Signore; facendo tutto quello, che avea fatto Ozia suo padre. And he did that which was liked before our Lord: according to al things, which Ozias his father had done, did he worke.Fecitque quod erat placitum coram Domino: juxta omnia quæ fecerat Ozias pater suus, operatus est. 35But the high places he took not away: the people still sacrificed, and burnt incense in the high places: he built the highest gate of the house of the Lord. Howbeit the excelses he tooke not away: as yet the people immolated, and burnt incense in the excelses, he built the highest gate of the house of our Lord.
36But the rest of the acts of Joatham, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Juda? But the rest of the wordes of Ioatham, and al that he did, are not these things written in the Booke of the words of the dayes of the kings of Iuda?Reliqua autem sermonum Joatham, et universa quæ fecit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Juda ? 37In those days the Lord began to send into Juda, Rasin king of Syria, and Phacee the son of Romelia. In those dayes our Lord began to send into Iuda Rasin the king of Syria, and Phacee the sonne of Romelia. In diebus illis cœpit Dominus mittere in Judam Rasin regem Syriæ, et Phacee filium Romeliæ. 38And Joatham slept with his fathers, and was buried with them in the city of David, his father; and Achaz, his son, reigned in his stead.E Joatham si addormentò co' padri suoi, e fu sepolto con essi nella città di Davidde suo padre, e gli succedette nel regno Achaz suo figliuolo. And Ioatham slept with his fathers, and was buried with them in the citie of Dauid his father, and Achaz his sonne reigned for him.

Twentieth. Houbigant endeavours to shew it should be, "the 14th;" Capellus says, the 17th; (Haydock) and others have suspected that the number is incorrectly printed. (Grotius, etc.)
Capel
But this expedient ought only to be adopted when no other can give satisfaction; and this difficulty may be obviated by saying, that Jeroboam's reign with his father continued six years, and that after he had held the septre nineteen years alone, Azarias commenced; (Calmet; Usher) or, that there was an interregnum of eleven years, which is not probable. The priests boldly remonstrated with him, but to no effect; till the king perceived himself stricken with the leprosy. Josephus ([Antiquities?] 9:10.) says, a dreadful earthquake was felt at the same time, which is supposed to be that mentioned [in] Amos 1:1., and Zacharias 14:5; (St. Jerome, etc.) though Usher produces some chronological difficulties against this opinion: but they are founded on error. Ozias was in a manner dead to all civil transactions; and Isaias 6:1. probably refers to this event. Syriac and Arabic, "he remained hidden." Josephus (ibid.[IX. 10.]) says, "leading a private life." Thus aiming at too much, he lost all! (Haydock)

Thirtieth. Usher would place an interregnum of eleven years and a half, after the death of Jeroboam, to make the first year of Zacharias correspond with the 38th of Azarias, during which, he supposes, the troubles mentioned [in] Amos vii., and viii., happened. But this interregnum has no foundation, ver. 5. (Calmet)
Capellus says it would have lasted above 22 years. He and Houbigant would read, 28th: the latter adds ten years to the reign of Zacharias. The transcriber might easily omit the years, as they end in the same manner as months. Arabic has "six years;" whence we may infer, that the copies formerly varied. The exploits of Zacharias require a longer space than six months. (Chron. sac. p. 107, 110.)

But Joatham reigned only 16 years, (ver. 33.) so that this was the fourth year of Achaz. (Haydock)

Usher says that Osee did not ascend the throne till nine years after the death of Phacee, as he is asserted to have commenced his reign in the twelfth year of Achaz, 4 Kings 17:1. But another difficulty arises from the mention of this 20th year, as Phacee would have reigned 22, instead of 20; (ver. 27.) for Joatham only commenced in the second year of Phacee. To reconcile these passages, we may conclude that Osee conspired against the king of Israel in the 18th year of Joatham, gained possession of part of the kingdom in the 20th of the same prince, and of the whole in the 12th of Achaz. (Calmet)
The pretended interregnum ought to be rejected, as the murderer of the late king would not delay to ascend the throne. Houbigant adds 10 years to the reign of Phacee, as well as to that of Zacharias: the dates assigned to the kings of Israel being otherwise so much deficient, p. 113.

… 24 ): as also Esaias saith, “and the head of Ephraim is Somoron” ( Isa. vii. 9 , LXX.), but the inhabitants were termed not “Samaritans” but “Israelites.” But as time went on, they offended God, and in the reign of Pekah, Tiglath-Pileser came up, and took many cities, and set upon Elah, and having slain him, gave the kingdom to Hoshea.
15:1
1. Anno vigesimo septimo Jeroboam regis Israel, REGNAVIT (regnare coepit) Azarias Amasiae filius REGIS JUDA.
15:2
2. ET QUINQUAGINTA DUOBUS ANNIS REGNAVIT. Tempore Azariae vixit Sardanapalus, quem Gentiles Historici ultimum collocant regem Assyriorum, aiuntque eum utpote effeminatum ab Arbace Mediae praefecto obsessum in Ninive, ibi seipsum cum gaza regia concremasse. Quare Arbacem se fecisse regem Mediae sub annum Azariae decimum, regnante apud Latinos Proca Sylvio, apud Corinthios Agemone, apud Spartanos legislatore Lycurgo.
15:5
5. Percussit autem Dominus regem (Azariam) et FUIT LEPROSUS, quia scilicet ipse usurpabat munus Pontificis, adolendo incensum super altare thymiamatis, quod erat in Sancto, ut dicitur II Paral. cap. xxvi, vers. 16, de quo ibidem plura.
15:8
8. ANNO TRIGESIMO OCTAVO AZARIAE REGIS JUDA REGNAVIT ZACHARIAS FILIUS JEROBOAM SUPER ISRAEL. Hic fuit abnepos Jehu; unde Jehu stirps regia finita fuit in Zacharia, quasi in quarta generatione, uti ei promiserat Deus, cap. x, vers. 30: "Anno trigesimo octavo Azariae," scilicet ex eo tempore quo ipse regnare coepit cum patre Amasia; nam ex eo tempore quo post patrem solus regnavit Azarias, erat hic annus 26 vel 27. Si ergo annos 38 Azariae numeres ab anno 18 Amasiae patris ejus, quo ipse eum in regnum socium ascivit, annus hic Azariae 38 erit 41 Jeroboami regis Israel, quippe qui anno 15 Amasiae patris Azariae solus regnare coeperit. Hic enim annus quadragesimus primus fuit ultimus Jeroboam: unde, eo moriente, successit ei filius Zacharias per sex menses. Verum quia Azarias post patrem Amasium solus regnavit 52 annis qui hic sigillatim consignantur: nam vers. 37, numeratur annus Azariae 39, et vers. 23, Nota: Sub Azaria coeperunt computari Olympiades, sed quoto ejus anno id factum variant Chronologi. Eusebius, lib. X De Praepar. cap. III, et Censorinus, lib. X De die natali, cap. xxi. Olympias autem spatium erat quatuor annorum, quod intercederat inter duos ludos Olympicos, qui Jovi Olympio totius Graeciae concursu, quarto quolibet anno, apud Pisam et Elidem ob memoriam diei intercalaris celebrabantur sub initium aestatis sive solstitii aestivi, a luna undecima usque ad decimam sextam, teste Livio, Censorino et aliis. Audi Solynum Polyhistoricum, cap. 11: "Certamen Olympicum (quod olim Hercules in honorem atavi sui materni Pelopis ediderat, in omni genere certaminum victor) jam pridem intermissum Iphitus Elidensis instauravit post excidium Trojae anno 408. Roma deinde condita, incipiente Olympiade 7 post excidium Trojae anno 433."
Vide ibi dicta Isaiae XLVI, 1. ET DABAT MANAHEM PHUL MILLE TALENTA ARGENTI, UT ESSET EI IN AUXILIUM, contra rebelles Thersae, Thapsae, etc., ut dictum est versu 14. Haec fuit occasio cur Theglathphalasar successor Phulis invaserit Israelem, eumque abduxerit in Assyriam, ut dicetur vers. 29. Phul ergo vocatus in auxilium
15:29
29. IN DIEBUS PHACEE VENIT THEGLATHPHALASAR REX ASSUR. 6 et 7, ipsum quoque Achaz, a quo vocatus fuerat, oppressit, ejusque ditionem expilavit, II Paral. xxviii, 8. Hebr.
15:30
15:32
Sedecim annis regnavit -- probe et pie; unde prae aliis laudatur a Scriptura et a Josepho. Hic illud Propertii: Urbi festus erat, dixere Palilia patres. Hic primus coepit moenibus esse dies. Hinc quoque S. Hieronymus in cap. 1 Isaiae,
