The apostle’s affection for the Corinthians. His comfort and joy on their account.

1Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of the flesh and of the spirit, perfecting sanctification in the fear of God.Avendo adunque queste promesse, o dilettissimi, mondiamoci da ogni bruttura di carne, e di spirito, conducendo a fine la (nostra) santificazione nel timor di Dio.HAVING therfore these promisses, my deerest, let vs cleanse our selues from al inquinatiō of the flesh and spirit, persiting sanctification in the feare of God.Has ergo habentes promissiones, carissimi, mundemus nos ab omni inquinamento carnis et spiritus, perficientes sanctificationem in timore Dei. 2Receive us. We have injured no man: we have corrupted no man: we have overreached no man.Dateci luogo. Noi non abbiamo offeso nissuno, non abbia corrotto nissuno, non abbiamo messo in mezzo nissuno.Receiue vs. Vve haue hurt no man, vve haue corrupted no man, vve haue circumuented no man.Capite nos. Neminem læsimus, neminem corrupimus, neminem circumvenimus. 3I speak not this to your condemnation. For we have said before that you are in our hearts: to die together and to live together. I speake not to your cōdemnation. for I said before that you are in our hartes to die together and to liue together. 4Great is my confidence for you: great is my glorying for you. I am filled with comfort: I exceedingly abound with joy in all our tribulation. Much is my confidence vvith you, much is my glorying for you: I am replenished vvith consolation: I do excedingly abound in ioy in al our tribulation.Multa mihi fiducia est apud vos, multa mihi gloriatio pro vobis: repletus sum consolatione; superabundo gaudio in omni tribulatione nostra. 5For also, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest: but we suffered all tribulation. Combats without: fears within. For also vvhen vve vvere come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but vve suffered al tribulatiō: vvithout, combats: vvithin, feares.

6But God, who comforteth the humble, comforted us by the coming of Titus. But God that comforteth the humble, did comforte vs, in the comming of Titus. 7And not by his coming only, but also by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, relating to us your desire, your mourning, your zeal for me: so that I rejoiced the more.Né solamente coll'arrivo di lui, ma anche con la consolazione, che egli aveva ricevuta da voi, riportando egli a noi il vostro desiderio, il vostro pianto, il vostro ardente affetto per me, ond'io maggiormente mi rallegrassi. And not only in his comming, but also in the consolation, vvhervvith he vvas comforted among you, reporting to vs your desire, your vveeping, your emulation for me, so that I reioyced the more. 8For although I made you sorrowful by my epistle, I do not repent. And if I did repent, seeing that the same epistle (although but for a time) did make you sorrowful,Dappoiché sebbene vi rattristai con quella lettera, non me ne pento: e se me ne fossi pentito, al vedere, che quella lettera (quantunque per poco tempo) vi rattristò,For although I made you sorie in an epistle, it repenteth me not: albeit it repented me, seing that the same epistle (although but for a time) did make you sorie.Quoniam etsi contristavi vos in epistola, non me pœnitet: etsi pœniteret, videns quod epistola illa (etsi ad horam) vos contristavit, 9Now I am glad: not because you were made sorrowful, but because you were made sorrowful unto penance. For you were made sorrowful according to God, that you might suffer damage by us in nothing.Godo adesso: non perché vi siete rattristati, ma perché vi siete rattristati a penitenza. Conciossiachè vi siete rattristati secondo Dio talmente, che in nissuna cosa avete ricevuto danno da' noi.Novv I am glad: not because you vvere made sorie, but because you vvere made sorie to penance. For you vvere made sorie according to God, that in nothing you should suffer detriment by vs.nunc gaudeo: non quia contristati estis, sed quia contristati estis ad pœnitentiam. 10For the sorrow that is according to God worketh penance, steadfast unto salvation: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. For the sorovv that is according to God, vvorketh penance vnto saluation that is stable: but the sorovv of the vvorld vvorketh death.

11For behold this selfsame thing, that you were made sorrowful according to God, how great carefulness it worketh in you: yea defence, yea indignation, yea fear, yea desire, yea zeal, yea revenge. In all things you have shewed yourselves to be undefiled in the matter.Imperocché ecco, questo stesso essere stati voi rattristati secondo Dio quanta ha prodotto in voi sollecitudine: anzi apologia, anzi sdegno, anzi timore, anzi desiderio, anzi zelo, anzi vendetta? Per tutti i versi avete fatto conoscere, che voi siete innocenti in quell'affare. For behold this very thing, that you vvere made sorie according to God, hovv great carefulnes it vvorketh in you: yea defense, yea indignation, yea feare, yea desire, yea emulation, yea reuenge. in al things you haue shevved your selues to be vndefiled in the matter. 12Wherefore although I wrote to you, it was not for his sake that did the wrong, nor for him that suffered it: but to manifest our carefulness that we have for you.Sebbene adunque vi scrissi, noi feci per riguardo a colui, che fece l'ingiuria, né per riguardo a colui, che la patì: ma per far palese la sollecitudine nostra, che abbiamo per voiTherfore although I vvrote to you, not for him that did the iniurie, nor for him that suffered: but to manifest our carefulnes that vve haue for you before God,Igitur, etsi scripsi vobis, non propter eum qui fecit injuriam, nec propter eum qui passus est: sed ad manifestandam sollicitudinem nostram, quam habemus pro vobis 13Before God: therefore we were comforted. But in our consolation we did the more abundantly rejoice for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all. But in our consolation, vve did the more aboundantly reioyce vpon the ioy of Titus, because his spirit vvas refreshed of al you.coram Deo: ideo consolati sumus. In consolatione autem nostra, abundantius magis gavisi sumus super gaudio Titi, quia refectus est spiritus ejus ab omnibus vobis: 14And if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I have not been put to shame: but as we have spoken all things to you in truth, so also our boasting that was made to Titus is found a truth.E se alcun poco mi era gloriato di voi con esso, non son rimaso confuso: ma come in tutte le cose abbiamo detta a voi la verità, così il vanto, ch'io mi era dato con Tito, è stato una verità,And if to him I gloried any thing of you, I am not cōfounded: but as vve spake al things to you in truth, so also our glorying that vvas to Titus, is made a truth,et si quid apud illum de vobis gloriatus sum, non sum confusus: sed sicut omnia vobis in veritate locuti sumus, ita et gloriatio nostra, quæ fuit ad Titum, veritas facta est,

15And his bowels are more abundantly towards you: remembering the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling you received him.Ed egli più svisceratamente vi ama, mentre si sovviene della ubbidienza di tutti voi, e come lo accoglieste con timore, e tremore.and his bovvels are more aboundantly toward you: remembring the obedience of you al, hovv vvith feare and trembling you receiued him.et viscera ejus abundantius in vobis sunt, reminiscentis omnium vestrum obedientiam: quomodo cum timore et tremore excepistis illum. 16I rejoice that in all things I have confidence in you.Mi rallegro adunque della totale fidanza, che ho in voi.I reioyce that in al things I haue confidence in you.Gaudeo quod in omnibus confido in vobis.
