1Now in the hundred and sixtieth year, Alexander, the son of Antiochus, surnamed the Illustrious, came up and took Ptolemais, and they received him, and he reigned there.L'anno cento sessanta Alessandro figliuolo di Antioco soprannominato l'illustre andò ad occupar Tolemaide, e vi fù accolto, e ivi cominciò a regnare.AND in the yeare an hundreth threescore came vp Alexander the sonne of Antiochus, that was surnamed Noble: and he tooke Ptolemais, and they receiued him, and he reigned there. 2And king Demetrius heard of it, and gathered together an exceeding great army, and went forth against him to fight. And Demetrius the king heard it, and he gathered together an exceding great armie, and went forth to meete him into battel.Et audivit Demetrius rex, et congregavit exercitum copiosum valde, et exivit obviam illi in prælium. 3And Demetrius sent a letter to Jonathan, with peaceable words, to magnify him.E Demetrio scrisse a Gionata con espressioni di affetto, e dandogli molte lodi. And Demetrius sent an epistle to Ionathas in peaceable wordes, to magnifie him. 4For he said: Let us first make a peace with him, before he make one with Alexander against us.Perocchè egli diceva: Facciasi tosto pace con lui prima, che egli la faccia con Alessandro in nostro danno:For he sayd: Let vs preuent to make peace with him, before he make with Alexander against vs:Dixit enim: Anticipemus facere pacem cum eo, priusquam faciat cum Alexandro adversum nos: 5For he will remember all the evils that we have done against him, and against his brother, and against his nation.Perocchè egli si ricorderà del male, che abbiam fallo a lui e al suo fratello e alla sua nazione.for he wil remember al the euils, that we haue done against him, and against his brother, and against his nation.recordabitur enim omnium malorum, quæ fecimus in eum, et in fratrem ejus, et in gentem ejus. 6And he gave him authority to gather together an army, and to make arms, and that he should be his confederate: and the hostages that were in the castle, he commanded to be delivered to him.E gli dava autorità di metter insieme un esercito, e di fabbricare armi, e lo faceva suo confederato, e comandava, che gli fosser rimessi gli ostaggi, che erano nella cittadella. And he gaue him authoritie to gather an armie, and to make weapons, and to be himself his felow: and the hostages that were in the castel, he commanded to be deliuered to him.
7And Jonathan came to Jerusalem, and read the letters in the hearing of all the people, and of them that were in the castle.E Gionata andò a Gerusalemme, e lesse la lettera alla presenza di tutto il popolo e di quelli che eran nella cittadella. And Ionathas came into Ierusalem, and read the epistles in the hearing of al the people, and of them that were in the castle.Et venit Jonathas in Jerusalem, et legit epistolas in auditu omnis populi, et eorum qui in arce erant. 8And they were struck with great fear, because they heard that the king had given him authority to gather together an army.E questi si intimorirono grandemente in sentendo, come il re gli dava potestà di metter insieme un esercito. And they feared with great feare, because they heard that the king gaue him authoritie to gather an armie. 9And the hostages were delivered to Jonathan, and he restored them to their parents.E furon rimessi gli ostaggi a Gionata, ed ei li rendette ai lor genitori:And the hostages were deliuered to Ionathas, & he rendered them to their parents.Et traditi sunt Jonathæ obsides, et reddidit eos parentibus suis: 10And Jonathan dwelt in Jerusalem, and began to build, and to repair the city.E Gionata fissò la sua abitazione in Gerusalemme, e cominciò a rifabbricare e ristorar la città:And Ionathas dwelt in Ierusalem, and began to build, and to renew the citie.et habitavit Jonathas in Jerusalem, et cœpit ædificare et innovare civitatem. 11And he ordered workmen to build the walls, and mount Sion round about with square stones for fortification: and so they did.E disse a quelli, che soprintendevano ai lavori, che facessero una muraglia di pietra quadra attorno al monte di Sion per fortificarlo; e così fecero. And he spake to them that made the workes, that they should build the walles, and mount Sion round about with square stones for munition: and so they did. 12And the strangers that were in the strong holds, which Bacchides had built, fled away.Ma gli stranieri, che stavano nelle fortezze fabbricate da Bacchide si fuggirono:And the Aliens fled that were in the holdes, which Bacchides had built:Et fugerunt alienigenæ, qui erant in munitionibus quas Bacchides ædificaverat: 13And every man left his place, and departed into his own country:E abbandonati i loro posti se n'andò ciascheduno al suo paese:and euerie man left his place, and departed into his owne countrie:et reliquit unusquisque locum suum, et abiit in terram suam:
14Only in Bethsura there remained some of them, that had forsaken the law, and the commandments of God: for this was a place of refuge for them.Solamente in Bethsura rimasero alcuni di quelli che aveano abbandonata la legge e i precetti di Dio; essendo colà il loro rifugio.onlie in Bethsura there remained some of them, that had forsaken the law, and the precepts of God: for this was for a refuge to them.tantum in Bethsura remanserunt aliqui ex his qui reliquerant legem et præcepta Dei: erat enim hæc eis ad refugium. 15And king Alexander heard of the promises that Demetrius had made Jonathan: and they told him of the battles, and the worthy acts that he and his brethren had done, and the labours that they had endured.Ma il re Alessandro avendo sapute le promesse fatte a Gionata da Demetrio, ed essendogli state raccontate le battaglie e le azioni gloriose di lui e de' suoi fratelli, e in quanti travagli si erano trovati,And Alexander the king heard of the promises, that Demetrius had promised to Ionathas: and they told him the battels, and the worthie acts that he did, and his bretheren, and the labours, that they endured:Et audivit Alexander rex promissa, quæ promisit Demetrius Jonathæ: et narraverunt ei prælia, et virtutes quas ipse fecit, et fratres ejus, et labores quos laboraverunt: 16And he said: Shall we find such another man? now, therefore, we will make him our friend and our confederate. Or noi facciamcelo amico e confederato.and he sayd: Why, shal we find any such man? and now we wil make him a freind, & our felow.et ait: Numquid inveniemus aliquem virum talem ? et nunc faciemus eum amicum, et socium nostrum. 17So he wrote a letter, and sent it to him according to these words, saying:E scrisse, e mandò a lui una lettera di questo tenore:And he wrote an epistle, & sent it to him according to these wordes, saying:Et scripsit epistolam, et misit ei secundum hæc verba, dicens: 18King Alexander to his brother, Jonathan, greetings.Il re Alessandro al fratello Gionata, salute.KING Alexander to his brother Ionathas greeting.Rex Alexander fratri Jonathæ salutem. 19We have heard of thee, that thou art a man of great power, and fit to be our friend:Abbiamo saputo, che tu se' un uomo di valore, e degno della nostra amicizia. We haue heard of thee, that thou art mightie of powre, and art meete to be our freind:Audivimus de te quod vir potens sis viribus, et aptus es ut sis amicus noster:

What is this that we haue done, that Alexander hath preuented vs to take the frendshippe of the Iewes for his strength?Quid hoc fecimus, quod præoccupavit nos Alexander apprehendere amicitiam Judæorum ad munimen sui ? 24I also will write to them words of request, and offer dignities, and gifts: that they may be with me to aid me.Scriverò io pure ad essi, pregandoli, e offerendo loro dignità e doni, affinché sieno in mio aiuto.I also wil write to them wordes of request, and dignities, and gifts: that they may be with me to ayde me.scribam et ego illis verba deprecatoria, et dignitates, et dona, ut sint mecum in adjutorium.

48And king Alexander gathered together a great army, and moved his camp near to Demetrius. And king Alexander gathered a great armie, and moued the campe nere to Demetrius.Et congregavit rex Alexander exercitum magnum, et admovit castra contra Demetrium. 49And the two kings joined battle, and the army of Demetrius fled away, and Alexander pursued after him, and pressed them close.E i due re vennero a battaglia, e l'esercito di Demetrio fu messo in fuga; e Alessandro gli insegui, e diede loro addosso. And the two kinges ioyned battel, and the armie of Demetrius fled, and Alexander pursewed him, and vrged them sore. 50And the battle was hard fought, till the sun went down: and Demetrius was slain that day.E rincrudì la zuffa grandemente fino al tramontare del sole, e Demetrio vi fu morto. And the battel grew very sore, til the sunne went downe: and Demetrius was slaine in that day.Et invaluit prælium nimis, donec occidit sol: et cecidit Demetrius in die illa. 51And Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemee king of Egypt, with words to this effect, saying:E il re Alessandro mandò ambasciatori a Tolomeo re di Egitto, perché gli dicessero a suo nome:And Alexander sent legates to Ptolomee king of Aegypt according to these wordes, saying:Et misit Alexander ad Ptolemæum regem Ægypti legatos secundum hæc verba, dicens: 52Forasmuch as I am returned into my kingdom and am set in the throne of my ancestors, and have gotten the dominion, and have overthrown Demetrius and possessed our country,Io son rientrato nel mio regno, e seguo sul treno dei padri miei, ed ho ricuperati gli stati miei, ed ho vinto Demetrio, e ho ridotto a mia obbedienza i miei dominii,BECAVSE I am returned into my kingdom, and am set in the seate of my fathers, and haue obteyned the princedom, and haue destroyed Demetrius, and possessed our countrie,Quoniam regressus sum in regnum meum, et sedi in sede patrum meorum, et obtinui principatum, et contrivi Demetrium, et possedi regionem nostram, 53And have joined battle with him, and both he and his army have been destroyed by us, and we are placed in the throne of his kingdom:E son venuto a battaglia con lui, ed egli è restato sconfitto da noi con tutto il suo esercito, e noi siamo assisi sul trono del regno occupato da lui.and haue ioyned battel with him, and he is destroyed him self, & his campe by vs, and we sit in the seate of his kingdom:et commisi pugnam cum eo, et contritus est ipse et castra ejus a nobis, et sedimus in sede regni ejus:
54Now, therefore, let us make friendship one with another: and give me now thy daughter to wife, and I will be thy son in law, and I will give both thee and her gifts worthy of thee.Ora pertanto facciamo amicizia tra noi, e dammi per moglie la tua figliuola, e io sarò tuo genero, e farò a te e a lei doni degni di te.and now let vs make amitie one with an other: and geue me thy daughter to wife, and I wil be thy sonne in law, and I wil geue thee gifts, and to her, dignitie.et nunc statuamus ad invicem amicitiam: et da mihi filiam tuam uxorem, et ego ero gener tuus, et dabo tibi dona, et ipsi, digna te. 55And king Ptolemee answered, saying: Happy is the day wherein thou didst return to the land of thy fathers, and sattest in the throne of their kingdom.E il re Tolomeo rispose, e disse: Felice quel giorno, in cui tu se' tornato nel paese de' padri tuoi, e ti se' assiso sul trono del loro regno. And king Ptolomee answered, saying: HAPPIE is the day wherin thou art returned to the land of thy fathers, and art set in the seate of their kingdom.Et respondit rex Ptolemæus, dicens: Felix dies, in qua reversus es ad terram patrum tuorum, et sedisti in sede regni eorum. 56And now I will do to thee as thou hast written but meet me at Ptolemais, that we may see one another, and I may give her to thee as thou hast said.Or io farò teco quello che tu hai scritto: ma vienimi incontro fino a Tolemaida, affinché ci vediamo insieme, e io ti dia la sposa, come tu mi hai richiesto. And now I wil doe to thee that which thou hast writen: but meete me at Ptolemais, that we may see one an other, and I may despouse her to thee as thou hast sayd. 57So Ptolemee went out of Egypt, with Cleopatra his daughter, and he came to Ptolemais, in the hundred and sixty-second year.E Tolomeo si parti dall'Egitto con Cleopatra sua figliuola l'anno cento sessantadue, e andò a Tolemaida. And Ptolomee went out of Aegypt, he and Cleopatra his daughter, and he came to Ptolomais in the yeare an hundred threescore and two. 58And king Alexander met him, and he gave him his daughter, Cleopatra: and he celebrated her marriage at Ptolemais with great glory, after the manner of kings.E il re Alessandro gli andò incontro, e quegli diede a lui Cleopatra sua figliuola, e furon fatte le nozze in Tolemaida, alla reale con gran magnificenza. And Alexander the king mette him, and he gaue him Cleopatra his daughter: and he made her mariage at Ptolomais, as kinges in great glorie.
59And king Alexander wrote to Jonathan, that he should come and meet him.E il re Alessandro scrisse a Gionata, che andasse a trovarlo. And king Alexander wrote to Ionathas, that he should come to meete him. 60And he went honourably to Ptolemais, and he met there the two kings, and he gave them much silver, and gold, and presents: and he found favour in their sight. And he went with glorie to Ptolomais, and he mette there the two kinges, and he gaue them much siluer, and gold, and gifts: and he found grace in their sight. 61And some pestilent men of Israel, men of a wicked life, assembled themselves against him, to accuse him: and the king gave no heed to them. And there assembled against him pestilent men of Israel, wicked men soliciting against him: and the king attended not to them. 62And he commanded that Jonathan’s garments should be taken off, and that he should be clothed with purple: and they did so. And the king made him sit by himself.E ordinò che Gionata si spogliasse delle sue vesti, e fosse rivestito di porpora, e così fu fatto; e il re lo fece sedere accanto a sé.And he commanded Ionathas to be changed of his garments, and that he should be clothed with purple: and so they did. And the king placed him to sit with him self. 63And he said to his princes: Go out with him into the midst of the city, and make proclamation, that no man complain against him of any matter, and that no man trouble him for any manner of cause.E disse ai suoi grandi: Andate con lui nel mezzo della città, e fate bandire, che nissuno porti querela contro di lui per nissun titolo, né lo inquieti per qualunque cosa si sia.And he sayd to his princes: Goe ye out with him into the middes of the citie, & proclame, that no man solicite against him for any matter, and that no man be trublesome vnto him for any cause.
64So when his accusers saw his glory proclaimed, and him clothed with purple, they all fled away.Or quando gli accusatori ebber veduto com'egli era onorato, e quello che si era bandito, e com' egli era vestito di porpora, se ne fuggiron tutti:And it came to passe, as they that solicited, saw his glorie that was published, & him couered with purple, they al fled:Et factum est, ut viderunt qui interpellabant gloriam ejus, quæ prædicabatur, et opertum eum purpura, fugerunt omnes: 65And the king magnified him, and enrolled him amongst his chief friends, and made him governor, and partaker of his dominion.E il re gli fece grandi onori, e lo messe tra' suoi amici primarj, e lo fece capitano di eserciti, e lo mise a parte del principato.and the king magnified him, and wrote him amongst his chiefe freindes, and made him Duke, and partaker of the princedom.et magnificavit eum rex, et scripsit eum inter primos amicos, et posuit eum ducem, et participem principatus. 66And Jonathan returned into Jerusalem with peace and joy.E Gionata se ne tornò in pace e allegramente a Gerusalemme. And Ionathas returned into Ierusalem with peace, and ioy. 67In the year one hundred and sixty-five, Demetrius, the son of Demetrius, came from Crete into the land of his fathers.L'anno cento sessantacinque Demetrio figliuolo di Demetrio venne di Candia nel paese de' padri suoi.In the yeare an hundreth sixtie fiue came Demetrius the sonne of Denetrius from Crete into the land of his fathers. In anno centesimo sexagesimo quinto, venit Demetrius filius Demetrii a Creta in terram patrum suorum. 68And king Alexander heard of it, and was much troubled, and returned to Antioch.E udito ciò il re Alessandro n'ebbe gran pena, e tornò ad Antiochia. And Alexander the king heard it, and he was verie sorie, and returned to Antioche. 69And king Demetrius made Apollonius his general, who was governor of Celesyria: and he gathered together a great army, and came to Jamnia: and he sent to Jonathan, the high priest,E il re Demetrio fece suo capitano Apollonio, il quale governava la Celesiria: ed egli, messo insieme un grand'esercito, si accostò a Jamnia, e mandò a dire a Gionata sommo Sacerdote:And Demetrius the king made Apollonius general, who was ruler of Coelesiria: & he gathered a great armie, & came to Iamnia: and he sent to Ionathas the high priest,Et constituit Demetrius rex Apollonium ducem, qui præerat Cœlesyriæ: et congregavit exercitum magnum, et accessit ad Jamniam: et misit ad Jonathan summum sacerdotem, 70Saying: Thou alone standest against us, and I am laughed at and reproached, because thou shewest thy power against us in the mountains. I am brought into derision, and into reproch, because thou doest exercise powre against vs in the mountains.dicens: Tu solus resistis nobis: ego autem factus sum in derisum, et in opprobrium, propterea quia tu potestatem adversum nos exerces in montibus.
71Now, therefore, if thou trustest in thy forces, come down to us into the plain, and there let us try one another: for with me is the strength of war.Ora pertanto se tu hai fidanza nelle tue schiere scendi a noi alla pianura, e misuriamoci insieme; perocchè il valor militare è con me.Now therfore if thou trust in thy forces, come downe to vs into the plaine, let vs compare there one with an other: because with me is the force of battels. 72Ask, and learn who I am, and the rest that help me, who also say that your foot cannot stand before our face, for thy fathers have twice been put to flight in their own land:Domanda, e ti sarà detto chi io mi sia, e chi sien quelli che sono in mio aiuta, i quali dicono, che voi non potete reggervi in piedi in faccia a noi; perocchè due volte furon messi in rotta i padri tuoi nel loro paese.Aske, and learne who I am, and the rest, that ayde me, who also say that your foote can not stand before our face, because twise haue thy fathers bene put to flight in their owne land:Interroga, et disce quis sum ego, et ceteri qui auxilio sunt mihi, qui et dicunt quia non potest stare pes vester ante faciem nostram, quia bis in fugam conversi sunt patres tui in terra sua: 73And now how wilt thou be able to abide the horsemen, and so great an army in the plain, where there is no stone, nor rock, nor place to flee to?E adesso come potrei far testa alla cavalleria e ad un esercito così grande in una pianura, dove non e pietra, né masso, nè luogo dove fuggire?and now how wilt thou be able to abide the horsemen, & so great an armie in the plaine, where is no stone, nor rocke, nor place to flee?et nunc quomodo poteris sustinere equitatum et exercitum tantum in campo, ubi non est lapis, neque saxum, neque locus fugiendi ? 74Now when Jonathan heard the words of Apollonius, he was moved in his mind: and he chose ten thousand men, and went out of Jerusalem, and Simon, his brother, met him to help him.Gionata udite le parole di Apollonio ne restò punto; e scelti diecimila uomini parti da Gerusalemme, e andogli incontro Simone suo fratello a soccorrerlo:But as Ionathas heard the wordes of Apollonius, he was moued in minde: and he chose tenne thousand men, and went forth from Ierusalem, & Simon his brother mette him to ayde him.Ut audivit autem Jonathas sermones Apollonii, motus est animo: et elegit decem millia virorum, et exiit ab Jerusalem, et occurrit ei Simon frater ejus in adjutorium: 75And they pitched their tents near Joppe, but they shut him out of the city: because a garrison of Apollonius was in Joppe, and he laid siege to it.E posero il campo presso Joppe, e quelli della città gli chiuser le porte (perocchè Joppe avea il presidio di Apollonio), ed egli l'assedio. And they moued the campe to Ioppe, and it shut him out of the citie: because the garison of Apollonius was in Ioppe, and he assaulted it.et applicuerunt castra in Joppen, et exclusit eum a civitate, quia custodia Apollonii Joppe erat: et oppugnavit eam.
76And they that were in the city being affrighted, opened the gates to him: so Jonathan took Joppe. And they that were in the citie being put in great feare, opened to him, and Ionathas obteyned Ioppe. 77And Apollonius heard of it, and he took three thousand horsemen, and a great army.E inteso ciò Apollonio si avvicinò con tre mila cavalli e con gran moltitudine di fonti. And Apollonius heard it, & he tooke three thousand horsemen, and a great armie.Et audivit Apollonius, et admovit tria millia equitum, et exercitum multum. 78And he went to Azotus, as one that was making a journey, and immediately he went forth into the plain: because he had a great number of horsemen, and he trusted in them. And Jonathan followed after him to Azotus, and they joined battle.E si mosse come per andare verso Azoto, e subito si gettò alla pianura, perché avea un buon corpo di cavalleria, e in essa avea fidanza. And he went to Azotus as making iorney, and immediatly he went forth into the plaine: because he had a multitude of horsemen, and he trusted in them. And Ionathas pursewed him vnto Azorus, and they ioyned battel. 79And Apollonius left privately in the camp a thousand horsemen behind them.Or Apollonio avea lasciati nascosti nel campo mille cavalli dietro ai nemici. And Apollonius left in the campe a thousand horsemen behinde them secretly.Et reliquit Apollonius in castris mille equites post eos occulte. 80And Jonathan knew that there was an ambush behind him, and they surrounded his army, and cast darts at the people from morning till evening.E Gionata fu avvertito, che gli erano state tese insidie alle spalle; e i nemici circondarono la sua gente, e gettavan dardi sopra di essa dalla mattina sino alla sera. And Ionathas vnderstood that there was an embushement behind him, and they compassed his campe, and they threw dartes vpon the people from morning euen vnto euening. 81But the people stood still, as Jonathan had commanded them: and so their horses were fatigued.E quegli stavan termi secondo il comando di Gionata; e i cavalli di coloro si stancarono. But the people stood, as Ionathas had commanded: and their horses laboured.
82Then Simon drew forth his army, and attacked the legion: for the horsemen were wearied: and they were discomfited by him, and fled. And Simon put forth his armie, and ioyned it against the legion: for the horsemen were wearied: and they were discomfited by him, and fled. 83And they that were scattered about the plain fled into Azotus, and went into Bethdagon, their idol’s temple, there to save themselves.E quelli che eran dispersi per la pianura, fuggirono ad Azoto, ed entrarono nella casa di Dagon loro idolo per salvarvisi. And they that were scattered by the playne, fled into Azotus, and entered into Bethdagon their idol house, there to saue them selues. 84But Jonathan set fire to Azotus, and the cities that were round about it, and took the spoils of them and the temple of Dagon: and all them that were fled into it, he burnt with fire. And Ionathas burnt Azorus, and the cities that were round about it, and he tooke the spoiles of them, and the temple of Dagon: and al that fled into it, he burnt with fire.Et succendit Jonathas Azotum, et civitates quæ erant in circuitu ejus, et accepit spolia eorum, et templum Dagon: et omnes qui fugerunt in illud, succendit igni. 85So they that were slain by the sword, with them that were burnt, were almost eight thousand men.E tra morti di spada e bruciati furono circa otto mila. And there were that were slayne by the sword, with these that were burnt, almost eight thousand men. 86And Jonathan, removed his army from thence and camped against Ascalon: and they went out of the city to meet him with great honour.E Gionata parti di colà, e si avvicinò ad Ascalon, e quelli della città gli andarono incontro facendogli grandi onori. And Ionathas remoued the campe from thence, and brought it to Ascalon: and they went out of the citie to meete him in great glorie.
87And Jonathan returned into Jerusalem with his people, having many spoils.E tornò Gionata a Gerusalemme con la sua gente ricco di spoglie. And Ionathas returned into Ierusalem with his companie, hauing manie spoiles. 88And it came to pass, when Alexander the king heard these words, that he honoured Jonathan yet more.Or tali cose avendo udite il re Alessandro, volle onorare viepiù Gionata. And it came to passe: as Alexander the king heard these wordes, he added yet to glorifie Ionathas. 89And he sent him a buckle of gold, as the custom is, to be given to such as are of the royal blood. And he gave him Accaron, and all the borders thereof, in possession.E mandogli la fibbia d'oro solita a darsi ai parenti de' re: e gli diede il dominio di Accaron e del suo territorio. And he sent him a cheyne of gold, as the custome is to be geuen to the cosins of kings. And he gaue him Accaron and al the borders therof in possession.
10:1
Year of the World 3851, Year before Christ 153.
Worthington
Illustrious. He falsely asserted that he was the son of Epiphanes, being of very mean birth. (Just. xxxv.) (Worthington)
Usher
Others say that he was illegitimate, and styled Ballas after his mother Bala, though the name in Syriac may denote "a worthless person." In his medals he styles himself Deopator Eúergetes, as if "God were his father," and himself "beneficent." (Calmet) (Usher, the year [of the world] 3851.)
At any rate the Romans and Egyptians acknowledged him, being glad to find a rival for Demetrius, who was become odious likewise to the Jews and Syrians. Heraclides had been deprived of his government (Calmet) by the king, (chap. 7:8.) and in revenge (Haydock) took Alexander, and Laodicea, daughter of Epiphanes, to Rome, where he gained over many of the senators, who agreed to help them to recover the kingdom. Heraclides then levied forces at Ephesus, and Ptolemais was delivered up to Alexander, whence he wrote to Jonathan. Nothing contributed more than these divisions to secure the liberty of the Jews.

Son. The king had sent his two sons, this Nicator and Sidetes, to Cnidus, that they might be out of danger. The eldest being informed that Alexander had given himself up to debauchery, put himself at the head of an army which Lasthenes of Crete had raised.
10:69
Apollonius, who had deserted Alexander, the year [of the world] 3856, though appointed governor of Coelosyria by him.
10:70
Mountains. I seem to be fighting with them. Come out, and shew your valour.
10:72
Calmet
Twice. He alludes perhaps to the defeat of Azarias, and to that where Judas was slain. (Calmet)
Haydock
This captain had also twice thought proper to retreat, 1 Machabees 6:47., and 7:32. (Haydock)
10:77
Army. Josephus says eight thousand foot, etc.
10:80
Worthington
Army. Literally, "camp," which the Vulgate puts for an army chiefly of foot. Josephus intimates that Jonathas drew up his forces in the shape "of a tile," or phalanx, and ordered them to face about on every side. (Calmet) the enemy could only throw darts, but could not penetrate. (Worthington)
10:81
Fatigued. In the evening, Simon seeing the enemy's cavalry tired, fell upon the infantry.
10:83
And. Et qui seems to be mistaken for equi, "the horsemen," as the Greek, Syriac, and Josephus read.
Bethdagon, "the house of Dagon."
Calmet
Temple. This is the sense of the Greek. (Calmet)
Haydock
Vulgate has literally, "their idols." See Judges 16:23. (Haydock)
10:89
St. Isidore
Buckle, to be worn on the shoulder. (St. Isidore)
This honour was very extraordinary, 2 Machabees 11:35. (Alex. Genial. 2:29.)
Haydock
Blood. Literally, "relations of kings." (Haydock)
10:51
Ptolemee.... Surnamed Philometer.
10:1
He falsely auovvched that he vvas the sonne of Antiochus Epiphanes. for he was in dede of very meane birth. Iustinus, li. 35.
10:20
It vvas not in the kinges povvre to make Ionathas high priest but he being so before, the king from this time did so account him.
10:26
This king Demetrius to gette his desired purpose, sticked not to vvrite a plainelye, for he had heard that the Ievves had refused him and made league vvith his enimie Alexander v, 22, 23.
10:46
Notwithstanding the great offers of euil disposed men, Ionathas and al prudent men considering their former vvicked dedes do not geue credite to glorious vvordes.
ch. 7. v. 11.
10:51
This Ptolomeus Philometor decided a controuersie that the Iewes had the true temple in Ierusalem, and that the Samaritanes temple in Garizim vvas schismatical: vvhich he iudged because albeit both pleaded antiquitie, yet only the Iewes proued by continual succession of high priestes from Aaron, and shewed that the other departed from them, first in the time of Ieroboam, and aftervvardes, built that temple in Garizim, vvhen some were returned from captiuitie: vvherof Iosephus vvriteth. li. 13. c. 6. Antiquit. Our Sauiour also iudged that the cause of the Ievves vvas better, Ioan. 4. v. 22.
10:64
VVhen caluminators see that the innocent is iustified and honored, they faile in their hart to procede against him.
10:81
Ionathas set his armie in that maner as on euerie side his men stood in front readie to resist the force of the enemie coming towards them, al their backes so turned vvithin their ovvne squadron, that the enemie could no vvay enter without present resistance: and so those of the embushment could only cast dartes, but could not breake the aray of Ionathas campe, not make anie entrance with out their owne present death.
10:20
Tertulliano † 220 d.C. The Five Books Against Marcion 5.9
… Now they say that this Psalm was a chant in honour of Hezekiah, because “he went up to the house of the Lord,” and God turned back and removed his enemies. Therefore, (as they further hold,) those other words, “Before the morning star did I beget thee from the womb,”
10:1
1. ET ANNO 160 ASCENDIT ALEXANDER ANTIOCHI FILIUS, QUI COGNOMINATUS EST (Epiphanes, id est illustris, vel) NOBILIS, ET OCCUPAVIT PTOLEMAIDAM. Alexander hic cognomento Balas, sive Veles (uti nunc Valesia familia in Gallia est regia), fuit filius Antiochi Epiphanis, ideoque frater Antiochi Eupatoris occisi a Demetrio; quare fratris necem ulturus, ejusque regnum recepturus occupavit Ptolemaidam Phœniciæ urbem, quæ nunc Accon, vel Ace dicitur.
10:10
10. ET HABITAVIT JONATHAS IN JERUSALEM, tum quia ipse erat summus Pontifex, ac Pontificatu fungi debebat in templo, ideoque residere in Jerusalem; tum quia ipse erat dux et princeps Israelis, cujus metropolis erat Jerusalem.
10:18
18. REX ALEXANDER FRATRI JONATHÆ SALUTEM, Jonatham Alexander rex vocat fratrem, quod ejus amicitiam et auxilium ambiret, cuperetque eum habere socium, promittens quod eum habiturus esset eo honore et amore, quo frater habet fratrem.
10:20
20. CONSTITUIMUS TE HODIE SUMMUM SACERDOTEM.
10:34
10:37
37. ET EX EIS CONSTITUENTUR SUPER NEGOTIA REGNI, QUÆ CONSTITUUNTUR EX FIDE, id est quæ summam fidem, summumque silentium et secretum requirunt. ET PRINCIPES SINT EX EIS (qui tam provincias, quam exercitus meos gubernent), ET AMBULENT IN LEGIBUS SUIS, ut juxta eas Judaice vivant in regno meo, sicut vivunt in Judæa.
10:39
10:42
42. QUÆ ACCIPIEBANT DE SANCTORUM RATIONE, id est ex sancti templi censu et ærario, ut in meum ærarium inferrent: nunc jubeo illa templo restitui, nimirum, «quinque millia siclorum,» id est quinque millia Francorum, sive Florenorum Brabanticorum. Siclus enim pendit quatuor drachmas, valetque quatuor Julios, sive quatuor regales Hispanicos.
10:43
43. Et quicumque (sive Judæi, sive Gentiles) confugerint in templum, etc., dimittantur, q. d. Jubeo sancioque jus asyli, quod habuit templum, imo illud augeo. Volo enim ut, dum quis confugit ad templum, quamdiu is in eo manet, nemo possit invadere bona illius in regno meo, licet alibi sita. Verum nimis ampla promittit hic Demetrius: quare Jonathas et Judæi ei non crediderunt æstimantes ex necessitate ficte hæc promittere, sed postea non servaturum; præsertim, quia ejus malevolentiam sæpius erant experti: quare, Demetrio relicto, adhæserunt Alexandro. Nota: hic Demetrius duodecim ingentia beneficia promittit Jonathæ, si suas partes contra Alexandrum sequi et tueri velit; unde colligas quanta fuerit fortitudo, et fama Jonathæ. Primum est immunitas tributorum; secundum, libertas Jerosolymæ, ut sit immunis a præsidio militum Demetrii; tertium, restitutio captivorum; quartum, permissio festivæ quietis; quintum, jus honoratæ militiæ; sextum, jus gubernandi; septimum, jus servandi fidem legemque patriam; octavum, amplificatio dominii Pontificii; nonum, donatio Ptolemaidis; decimum, annuus pro templo census quindecim millium siclorum; undecimum, jus asyli in templo; duodecimum, reædificatio murorum Jerusalem.
10:47
47. QUIA IPSE FUERAT EIS PRINCEPS SERMONUM PACIS, id est quia Alexander prior, et ante Demetrium, pacem fœdusque a Judæis postularat.
10:50
XIII, cap. ii. Porro licet Demetrius potius jus haberet ad regnum Asiæ, utpote filius Seleuci, qui senior erat Antiochi Magni filius, ideoque in regno successor, quam Alexander, utpote filius Antiochi Epiphanis, qui Seleuci erat frater junior; tamen Jonathas licite adjuvit Alexandrum contra Demetrium, tum quia Demetrius hucusque hostis fuerat Judæorum eosque hostiliter invaserat, et vastarat: quare contra eum Alexandri ope uti, imo eam implorare jure suo poterat Jonathas; tum quia Alexander jus belli habebat contra Demetrium, eo quod ipse fratrem suum seniorem Antiochum Eupatorem occidisset; voluit ergo necem fratris sui ulcisci, præsertim quia populus, scelera et tyrannidem Demetrii detestans, ei prætulerat Alexandrum; illumque sibi regem crearat.
10:51
Nam Physcon post eam repudiatam, duxit filiam ejus in uxorem.
10:69
10:70
70. QUIA TU POTESTATEM ADVERSUM NOS EXERCES IN MONTIBUS, id est in Judæa, quæ montosa est, q. d. Tu, o Jonatha, inter montes Judææ te contines, ibique dominaris, mihique resistis. Exi ergo e Judæa in campum Syriæ, ibique aperto marte mecum conflige, si vir es, et viribus ad bellandum polles, uti jactas; nam in angustiis montium facile est homini imbelli cum paucis resistere multis. Tu solus resistis nobis.
10:71
71. NUNC ERGO SI CONFIDIS IN VIRTUTIBUS (Græce δυνάμεσι, id est viribus et exercitibus) TUIS, DESCENDE AD NOS IN CAMPUM, ET COMPAREMUS (Græce συγκριθῶμεν, id est comparemur, conferamur, componamur) ILLIC INVICEM, (ut pedem pedi, manum manui conserentes, ostendamus uter sit fortior, an tu, an ego:) QUIA MECUM EST VIRTUS BELLORUM.
10:72
72. QUIA BIS IN FUGAM CONVERSI SUNT PATRES TUI, nimirum semel, quando Mathathias fugit cum filiis suis, I Machab. II, 28; iterum in pugna cum Bacchide, in qua cæso Juda, cæteri Judæi fugerunt, I Machab. IX, 18.
10:74
10:80
80. Et circuierunt (hostes, scilicet equites Apollonii) castra ejus (scilicet Jonathæ), et jecerunt jacula in populum, scilicet in socios Jonathæ. 81. POPULUS AUTEM STABAT (constanti animo, pede et manu clypeis suis excipiens, et repellens jacula hostium), ET LABORAVERUNT EQUI EORUM: q. d. Equi et equites Apollonii fatigati fuere, quia tota die laboraverunt currendo, et jaciendo tela in castra Jonathæ. Unde Simon eos fessos et lassos agressus fudit fugavitque.
10:82
82. ET EJECIT (Græce ἐξείλκυσε, id est extraxit, eduxit, emisit, explicuit, expandit) SIMON EXERCITUM SUUM (alas militum) ET COMMISIT (prælium) CONTRA LEGIONEM (Græce contra phalangem, puta contra aciem hostium); EQUITES ENIM FATIGATI ERANT (ob causam jam dictam), et contriti sunt ab eo (a Simone fratre Jonathæ), ET FUGERUNT.
10:83
83. ET INTRAVERUNT IN BETHDAGON, id est in domum Dagon, puta in templum Dagon, qui erat Deus sive «idolum» eorum, Græce εἰς εἰδωλεῖον, id est in idolium, sive fanum idoli sui, scilicet Dagon.
IV: Aurea purpuream subnectit fibula vestem. Fuit hoc ornamentum militare, teste Livio, lib.
