Anno 1391
12 Affetti repressi dai penitenti.
Sollecita nelle quotidiane confessioni. Attenta alle predicazioni. Ogni domenica riceve l'Eucaristia. Generosa verso i poveri.

of this constitution.
1 Boniface, bishop, servant of the servants of God, to his venerable brothers the patriarchs, archbishops, bishops, and to his beloved sons the elect and the chapters of patriarchal, metropolitan and cathedral churches, wherever constituted, greeting and apostolic blessing. From the beginning of the world, after the fall of the first parent, Preamble. since on that account the whole human race was held liable to eternal death, almighty and merciful God, looking ahead with the benefit of redemption and not wishing to lose entirely the man whom he had created, but desiring to make him a partaker of his divinity, sent beforehand the first prophets, breathed upon by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, as messengers of the coming of his Son in the flesh, under typical enigmas and divine revelations. That same only Son of his, begotten before all ages, when the fullness of time arrived, he sent forth from his own bosom into the womb of the Virgin Mother chosen beforehand, who by the inscrutable overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, the Angel announcing it, conceived. He, born of that same Virgin and advancing in time, began to do and to teach, and showed all how those reborn in the font of holy baptism might have a way opened from eternal death to life, and, gathering his disciples together, lest any faithful one should be terrified by the troubles of this transitory and fleeting life, or by the sorrows of temporal bitter death, for the attainment of eternal life, he offered himself as an immaculate victim, having completed his appointed course, on the altar of the Cross by bloody death to God the Father, and founded, consecrated and eternally established the Church militant by his precious Blood shed.
2 § 1. Then indeed, having passed from the world to the Father, to the Prince of the Apostles, the key-bearer, he committed the supreme pontifical care of his flock and universal government in his own person and in that of his successors, the Supreme Pontiffs, by entrusting to them the keys, namely the power of binding and loosing, and nevertheless promised that he would not abandon that Church forever.
3 § 2. For its abundant usefulness, he distributed diverse gifts of grace through the Holy Spirit to his faithful. For, according to the Apostle, to each is given a manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one indeed by the Spirit is given the word of wisdom. To another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit. To another faith, in the same Spirit. To another the grace of healing, in one Spirit. To another the working of miracles. To another prophecy. To another the discerning of spirits. To another kinds of tongues. To another the interpretation of speeches. But all these things one and the same Spirit worketh, dividing to each one as he will. And the Church militant, which the Father of lights sustained in the same Holy Spirit, is built as an admirable structure of precious stones, decorated with wonderful variety, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone, whom he chose before the constitution of the world, to be conformed to the image of his own Son, that he himself might be the firstborn among many brethren, in whom he hath graced them, bestowing the better gifts, who by his example might show forth the more excellent way.
4 § 3. Hence the holy Apostles went forth throughout the whole world, stirring up the human race, which was held under the yoke of sin, to life and salvation, and with most steadfast constancy preaching the word of God, so that their sound went forth into all the earth and their words unto the ends of the world.
5 § 4. Splendid martyrs also put on the breastplate of faith and, girded with the belt of unshaken stability, washed their robes in the Blood of the innocent Lamb, and imitating Christ Jesus with a white-robed army, adding themselves as living stones to the structure of the heavenly Jerusalem, that is, the Church triumphant, bearing palms in their hands with glorious victory, left behind a venerable example and an eternal and worthy memorial to the Church militant.
6 § 5. There came forth also most brilliant doctors, who, opposing those who strove to bring superstitious and various opinions into the true Catholic faith and to subvert that faith itself, by refuting the errors of such men, with wonderful eloquence, with solid and right judgments, the Holy Spirit working, illuminated that faith itself and the Church militant, by which that same Church, progressing in communion with them, rises as the dawn, beautiful as the moon, elect as the sun, terrible as an army set in array.
7 § 6. There follow also clear confessors adorned with gems and gleaming with virtues.
8 The Gospel diffused throughout the world by the Apostles.
9 Faith confirmed by the martyrs with their own blood.
10 Truth illustrated by the doctors.
11 Examples of virtue set forth by confessors. A.D. 1391
12 Penitents restrained in their affections by anchorites. The brightness of chastity in virgins.
13 By widows and others God is magnified in good works.
14 When the Lord demands an accounting of the talents entrusted, since they have exercised themselves in the constant and vigilant commerce of holy works, as faithful and good servants, they bring forth the fruit multiplied from their labors, and place the gift in the treasury.
15 § 7. Even anchorites and the most ardent followers of solitude, fleeing the vain spectacles of a beguiling and crafty, yet poisonous world, in order that they might reach the fatherland in safety, sought out hiding places and concealed themselves in caves, living on meager and simple food, spring water and light drink, mortifying their own flesh and restraining the stings of Satan, clothed in sackcloth or rough garments, for the most part with bare feet, and resting their weary limbs in sleep upon filthy ground or a straw bed, devoted to sacred contemplation and the praise of the supreme Majesty, at length called forth from this vale of tears and heap of miseries into the presence of God, they enjoy unfading delights.
16 § 8. There shall come forth virgins resplendent, pure in body and sincere in heart, bearing a sound mind willingly and oil in their vessels, going forth to meet the bridegroom coming, and espousing him, who is fairer than the children of men.
17 § 9. And devout and continent widows and other persons of either sex, always intent upon pious and holy works, present themselves before the tribunal of God with full sheaves, and with the holy angels sing glory to God in the highest, and on earth they beseech peace for men of good will. All these things truly that same Spirit, of whom we spoke above, works through his ministry in a manifold and admirable manner. And according to the holy promise, Christ Jesus has visited, cherished, defended, strengthened, invited and aided this his militant Church with such cultivators and cultivatrices even to this present day, and by his grace shall do so in the future through successive ages.
18 § 10. But in the last days, that there might be some good even from the north, that heavenly Husbandman, visiting the same vineyard in his accustomed manner, brought to the cultivation of this vineyard a strong woman bringing her price from afar and from the uttermost borders, namely the blessed widow Bridget, whom the common people call Brigida, who is deservedly to be joined to, or rather was joined to, that sacred company described above. For which reason we undertake the present work, so that we may run through, not at length but briefly, the origin, life, character and merits of this woman, as well as the miracles which the blessed God deigned to show to the world as a reward for her sanctity, lest the present age remain ignorant of so celebrated a woman, and lest a deaf posterity be able to accuse or pretend an ungrateful fame; and we wish to make known to your charity these matters through this series, having selected from many only a few which ought not to be passed over in silence.
19 § 11. This glorious woman derived her origin from her father Birger and her mother Sigrid, a married couple proceeding from the most noble royal stock of the Catholic kingdom of Sweden, and no less renowned for orthodox faith and constancy of spirit and virtues than for nobility.
20 § 12. This mother, while she carried her in her womb, suffered shipwreck in a certain bay of the sea, when the storm had swallowed up many persons of both sexes in the same shipwreck, and she came safely to shore, and on the following night there appeared to her in a vision a person resplendent in admirable raiment, and lest the coming of so venerable a widow be without forewarning, said to her: Thou art saved on account of the good which thou hast in thy womb. Therefore nourish it with the charity of God, because it has been given to thee by God.
21 § 13. And when the girl Bridget was recently brought forth from her mother's womb into the world, a parish priest in a nearby church, a man of approved life and mature age, while he was occupied in prayer at night, saw a bright cloud and in the midst of the cloud a virgin sitting, holding a book in her hand, and saying to him: There is born to Birger a certain daughter, whose voice shall be heard admirably throughout the world.
22 § 14. The girl being born appeared almost speechless until the end of three years, but soon, contrary to the natural course, not stammering after the manner of infants and those learning to speak, but she spoke complete and well-formed words from those things which she had heard and seen.
23 § 15. Advancing in years, she passed through childhood in wondrous devotion, namely through prayers and fastings, and was never otherwise idle from good works.
24 § 16. At length, although she desired with all her affections to serve the Lord in the state of virginity, she was nevertheless compelled by her parents to be espoused in matrimony to a certain Ulf of Ulvåsa, a most noble and most Christian youth, prince of Nerike.
25 § 17. And when they ought to come together, although they were suited for marital embraces, the husband namely being in his eighteenth year and the bride in her thirteenth year, yet by common consent imitating the younger Tobias and Sara, daughter of Raguel, they abstained from intercourse for more than a year, humbly beseeching God that if it should be expedient for them to come together, they might not sin in the union, and that God would grant them such offspring as would be for his service. They came together afterwards in fear and trembling, not for lust, but for posterity. Meanwhile the devout woman neglected neither fastings, nor prayers, nor other pious and customary works.
26 § 18. And since she was always especially devoted to the Blessed Virgin, and as time went on, she was nearly in danger from childbirth, and the midwives and women standing by despaired of her life, there appeared a certain imperious but unknown woman, clothed in white garments, who entered the bedchamber and stood by the bed, and examined each member of the lying woman; soon after this woman disappeared, the same woman in childbed remained freed from pain by a complete delivery.
27 § 19. And since the said spouses were still young and newly married, the husband, persuaded by the holy admonitions of his blessed wife, his heart not needing spoils, trusting in her, rendered to her good and not evil all the days of his life, and the woman herself and he bound themselves to each other willingly and mutually, and they kept perpetual continence.
28 § 20. And nevertheless the devout spouses, ever growing more fervent in the fear of God and love of neighbour, visited by common vow the threshold of the Blessed Apostle James in Compostella as pilgrims.
29 § 21. And having returned to their own home, when they had deliberated that they might more freely devote themselves to devotion, the said prince rested in the Lord in such deliberation, entering monasteries in different ways according to the diversity of sex.
30 § 22. But the Holy Widow, who from the beginning of her tender years had been dedicated to God, that she might devote herself unceasingly to fasts and prayers, her marriage dissolved and herself made free of her own right, like a ship of a merchant bringing her bread from afar, forewarned by the Holy Spirit, departing from her land and kindred, proceeded to the holy City and then to Jerusalem, and with remarkable devotion and venerable reverence beheld each place in which our Lord Jesus Christ was announced, born, brought up, baptized, conversed, worked miracles, mocked, crucified and buried, and ascended into heaven. Returning also to the City, since before, whether in Gaul, or in Spain, or in Italy, or in other regions this side or beyond the sea, the bodies of saints and holy women or memorable relics rested, very few indeed were passed over without personal visitation by the said holy Widow, and she spent the remainder of her life in that City.
31 § 23. But after her husband's death, out of reverence for the Holy Trinity, she wore about her flesh a certain cord of hemp with many knots tied tightly, and similarly about each leg below the knees individual cords similarly knotted, even in time of illness, and wore no linen garments except on her head, but rough clothing about her flesh, and above rough garments, not according to her station, but much humble and abject.
32 § 24. And not only those fasts which the holy Church commands, vigils or fasts did she observe, but she added many others beyond these, so that she fasted four times in the week beyond the Church's command and similarly four times in the week, while her husband was still living, and after his death continuously until a few years before her blessed passing, clothed in rough garments alone, upon a mat, without straw, mattress or the like, she refreshed her body, wearied from prayers, abstinences and divine labour, with brief and scanty sleep upon the ground or pavement. On every Friday in memory of the most sacred Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, content with bread and water, she did not omit her fast, and she also passed through many other days in reverence of various saints with similar abstinence, and whether she abstained by fasting or ate otherwise, since she was most temperate, she rose from table not satisfied but refreshed: on those same Fridays also from lighted wax candles she dripped burning and ignited drops upon her naked flesh, so that burned scars remained continuous, and she held in her mouth a certain most bitter herb or its root.
33 § 25. Moreover, dwelling in Rome, caring neither for the rigour of cold, nor for summer heats, nor for any impediment to a life of ease, nor for the harshness of rains or snows or hail, she visited on foot the stations appointed throughout the Church and various other holy Churches, although she could have ridden according to her means, yet striving beyond the weakened strength of her body, she visited them on foot on whatever day. For she used such long genuflections that her knees became stiff in hardness, so to speak, of camels.
34 § 26. Admirable and of remarkable humility, she was an unknown pilgrim to the poor, so that she cultivated humility closely, so that sometimes when sitting at the monastery of St. Lawrence in Palisperna of the City, of the Order of St. Clare, she would receive alms and kiss them with thanksgiving, and frequently with her own hands and out of reverence for God she repaired the garments of the poor.
35 § 27. She observed steadfast obedience to her superiors and confessors, so much so that without at least the permission of her confessor, she scarcely dared to raise her eyes.
36 § 28. And while her husband was still living, she confessed on each Friday, after his passing, she strove to repeat true confession at least once a day with great contrition, lamenting both light matters as well as the most grave, and passing over nothing of her words, behaviour, thoughts and deeds without examination.
37 § 29. She was assiduous and attentive at the preachings of God's Word, which approved men would deliver.
38 § 30. On each Sunday and solemn feast day, with devotion and tears, she received the venerable Sacrament of Christ's Body.
39 § 31. Considering the paths of her household, that she might not eat bread in idleness, she opened her hand to the needy, and extended her palms to the poor; for she exercised the offices of inexhaustible charity toward the destitute, the infirm, and the abject persons with unfailing diligence out of reverence for God.
40 § 52. For even while her husband still lived, she was accustomed to feed twelve poor persons daily in her own house, serving them and ministering to their necessities; and on Fridays, mindful of the Lord's Supper, she washed their feet with her own hands.
41 § 33. Moreover, from her own resources she repaired many desolate hospitals in the regions of her origin, and visited the poor and infirm dwelling there as a pious, benign, merciful and diligent ministress with the greatest piety. She touched their wounds without horror or disgust, washed them, bound them up, and tended them.
42 § 34. In the place of Watzsteno in the diocese of Linköping, she caused one venerable monastery to be built from her resources, obedient to her superiors. Diligent in daily confessions. Attentive to preachings. On each Sunday, etc. She receives the Eucharist. Generous toward the poor. She serves them at table. Benign toward the infirm and merciful. She built a monastery of nuns and a house of the brothers of St. Saviour, causing it to be constructed for sixty nuns living under enclosure, and twenty-five brothers of the Order of St. Augustine, called of St. Saviour, who, both nuns and brothers, are bound to observe certain constitutions drawn up by the blessed Widow herself and afterwards approved by the Apostolic See, with a sufficient dowry nevertheless assigned.
43 § 35. Admirable patience flourished in her during the infirmities of her own body, and she bore patiently and without murmur or complaint the various afflictions inflicted upon her, the death of her husband and of her son Charles, and other adversities, always blessing the Lord in all things with the utmost humility.
44 § 36. In faith ever more steadfast; in hope more constant; in true charity more ardent; she loved justice supremely and equity.
45 § 37. The stings of the flesh and various allurements, depravity and arrogance, pomp and vain glory, she despised with magnanimous contempt.
46 § 38. Concerning her singular continence and modesty, enough has been recounted above. But who could be found more prudent than she, with excellent discernment from her earliest years until her final hour, insofar as human frailty allowed, discerning all things, and she did not call good evil, nor evil good; nor did she put light for darkness, nor darkness itself for light.
47 § 39. By these holy and uninterrupted works, this blessed and generous Widow merited through the grace of the Holy Spirit to reveal the thoughts and intimate affections and most secret deeds of many, and to see and hear various visions and revelations, and to foretell many things by the prophetic spirit, some of which were fulfilled in effect, as these and other matters are most fully described in the volume of her revelations.
48 § 40. On the fifth day preceding, she announced her death.
49 that the end of her life was at hand.
50 § 41. And when she had passed her seventieth year, as the foretold time drew near, having called her household, she gave orders concerning what ought to be done, and finally, with her son Birger and her daughter Catherine, who then survived, being summoned and admonished concerning many things, that above all they should persevere in the fear and love of God and in holy works, having made her final confession with difficulty, having received the Viaticum and been anointed with Extreme Unction, and her memory having remained intact until the emission of her last breath, while Mass was being celebrated before her, after adoring the Body of Christ, with eyes lifted to heaven, saying: Into thy hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit, she yielded her well-deserving soul to her Creator at His call.
51 § 42. Upon the news of the passing of this Widow spreading abroad, a great multitude of people concurred with the utmost devotion and reverence to see her sacred body, glorifying and praising God unanimously, and the funeral is borne to the aforesaid monastery of St. Lawrence, where she had indicated, in far greater throngs of people, and on account of the excessive multitude it could not be properly buried for two days, which however was done with singular praise to God.
53 § 43. While this celebrated Widow was dwelling in Naples, a certain woman of Nola named Pictiolella, who suffered from a violent evil spirit transforming itself into human form and tormenting her, came to the holy Widow to consult with her on such a matter and on a suitable remedy. The excellent Widow, foreseeing the woman's secret, asked her whether she carried with her anything compiled by art magic or something of that sort. When the woman answered that she did not, the distinguished Widow replied: Search in your hair or braids, and you will find the contrary. The confused woman, remembering that she indeed had a small parchment with characters and incantations of her own in her hair, freely confessed her error. The remarkable Widow then commanded and persuaded her to confess devoutly and to repent truly and to receive communion, and also to fast, which she did; and by the merits and prayers of the aforementioned Widow, she never suffered a similar tormenting again.
54 § 44. When this distinguished Widow returned a second time from a long pilgrimage to Ortona in the diocese of Theate, where a great part of the relics of the most blessed Apostle Thomas is preserved (for it had been revealed to her beforehand through a vision that on her second coming to that land her devoted desire would be fulfilled), and while she stood visiting the relics with her customary devotion, the same Apostle, appearing to the devoted Widow, said: There shall be given to you what you have long desired; and immediately, with no one touching or otherwise moving it, a small fragment of one of the bones of the said Apostle leapt forth of its own accord from the reliquary into the hands of the Widow waiting to receive it, which she received with joy and devotion and preserved with the greatest veneration.
55 § 45. This admirable Widow was also, while she devoted herself to prayer and contemplation, lifted from the earth by many devout persons, to a height of about a man's measure, and was often seen with a splendid and radiant face.
56 § 46. The body had not yet been committed to the tomb for burial when a certain woman named Agnes de Lontessa, dwelling in the City, who from birth had a very thick and deformed throat, ran with others to venerate the funeral. When she had caused her own girdle to touch the hand of the holy St. Brigid lying there with devotion, she wrapped the same girdle around her neck with like devotion, and shortly thereafter her throat became reduced, and by divine miracle it was restored to its proper form.
57 § 47. But Francisca de Sabellis, a nun of the monastery of St. Lawrence, who had suffered for two years from weakness and poor health of the stomach and had almost always lain ill in bed, and who had been familiar with the honored Widow, while the unburied body was still being kept within the cloister, rose from her bed with great effort, bearing such a long infirmity, and came to the bier and lay there all night, nor did she cease to beseech God with devotion and urgency. By the merits and prayers of the Widow, whose body was present, she obtained such relief from so troublesome and so prolonged an infirmity that in the morning she found herself to have obtained a more effective remedy for the health of her own body than she had prayed for, so that she could be present with the other nuns at the divine offices and could go about the cloister with the help of no one when it was necessary.
58 § 48. But so that blessed God might demonstrate to the world the great merits of this beloved Widow, it happened that a certain woman of the diocese of Lincoln, having given birth to a dead infant, filled with the greatest sorrow and at length coming to herself, earnestly besought God in prayer that by the merits of the Widow so greatly to be celebrated, the infant might receive life; and having made a vow that with the infant, if it should come to life, she would visit the tomb of the holy Widow with a wax image, immediately the infant began to grow warm and to move, and fully received life. The woman, filled with devotion and joy, fulfilled the vow she had made.
59 § 49. But why do we linger over more details, when almighty God by the merits of this blessed Widow has opened ears to the deaf, restored the use of tongue to the mute, given firmness to the trembling paralyzed, straightness to the bent, free movement in walking to the contracted and infirm, sight to the blind, deliverance to women in peril of childbirth, health to diseases otherwise incurable, and has brought the shipwrecked and those laboring in violent waters to the harbor of salvation? And if we wished to recount one by one all the wonders that blessed God has wrought by the merits of the aforesaid Widow, both during her lifetime and after her blessed passing, beyond and above the forces of nature, and does not cease to work, we who are occupied with other diverse matters would be drawn into a very lengthy prolixity in such a recitation; yet the faithful eager for such things can diligently inquire to learn the deeds that have been perpetrated.
60 in a book in which they are faithfully recorded.
61 § 50. But the vows made at the monastery in Västerso aforesaid, to which the venerable body of this blessed Widow was transferred, having been fulfilled, and images and statues having been set up, bear great testimony to the truth.
62 § 51. And since, through the operation of the Holy Spirit, this Widow, vigilant through the excellence of her merits, placed in the glory of God the Father, doth almost illuminate the Church militant, and we taste and see that her conduct was and is good, and therefore in the night of the temporal death coming upon her, the lamp of her virtues and merits ought not to be extinguished, for it is not placed under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, and bringeth an inextinguishable light throughout the whole house of the Lord, nay rather let the sons of the holy mother Church arise and proclaim the most blessed one, and give her of the fruit of their hands, and praise her in the gates of the mother Church for her works. We who, by reason of our pastoral office, are debtors to the wise and to the unwise, through those things which have been held both by the blessed memory of Gregory XI and Urban VI, Roman Pontiffs, our predecessors, and by our mandate concerning these matters, being more certainly informed of the truth of the aforesaid through suitable witnesses and other legitimate proofs, and these being truly verified, and at the request of our most dear daughter in Christ our daughter Margaret, Queen of Sweden illustrious, and of the prelates and nobles of her realm, as well as of our beloved sons, the people and officials of the nurturing City and of our beloved daughters in Christ the abbesses and convents of the monasteries of St. Lawrence and of Västerso aforesaid, having been asked repeatedly and with insistence, in the name of the Lord, that we at length bless this most celebrated Widow, blessing her, and that our sanctification may flourish upon her, to the honour of God almighty, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, and to the exaltation of the orthodox faith and the increase of Christian religion, as well as to the cessation of schism, and to the union of faith and Church, by the authority of God almighty himself, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, and of the blessed apostles Peter aforesaid and Paul, and our own, with the counsel of our brethren and the assent of all the prelates residing in the Roman Curia, we decree, declare, define, and pronounce that the blessed Brigid of good memory, otherwise Bridget, named above so often, is a saint and ought to be venerated by the universal Church as a saint and to be inscribed in the catalogue of saints, and we now inscribe her herein.
63 § 52. Ordaining that by the universal Church, every year, on the day on which she, having overcome and triumphed over the world, brought forth her present life into perpetual eternity, namely the tenth day before the calends of August, her feast and office, as for one saint neither virgin nor martyr, be devoutly and solemnly celebrated.
64 § 53. And that to her venerable sepulchre a multitude of the faithful of Christ may flow more ardently and abundantly, and the feast of this same holy one may be celebrated more frequently, and her name be recalled more often, by the authority aforesaid, to all truly penitent and confessed persons who shall devoutly visit her sepulchre of this kind at the same monastery in Västerso, on the day of her feast, as well as on the fifth day before the calends of June, on which day namely this venerable body was transferred to the same monastery, and on the days presently occurring thereunder, annually, namely on each of those days on which they shall have visited the said sepulchre, as aforesaid, we mercifully remit seven years and as many forty-day periods of the penances enjoined upon them.
65 § 54. Wherefore we admonish, require and earnestly exhort your universality, nevertheless enjoining upon you strictly, in virtue of holy obedience and for the increase of eternal rewards: that you, solemnly publishing these our letters to your clergy and peoples by our authority, celebrate the feast of this venerable Saint with due solemnity and cause it also to be celebrated; humbly beseeching almighty God, from whom holy desires, right counsels and just works proceed, with all the affections of your hearts, that being entreated by the prayers and merits of this same Saint, he may grant to his servants that peace which the world cannot give, so that our hearts, devoted to his commandments, and the fear of enemies being removed, our times may be tranquil under his protection, and may grant to us that, after the completion of our stewardship of ministry, together with the flock entrusted to us, we may deserve to attain to eternal joys.
66 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, on the nones of October, in the second year of our pontificate. Dat. 1 October 1391, pont., year II.
