Exultate Deo
Bull of Union with the Armenians (Exultate Deo)
Decree of the Union of the Greeks; — 19. Concerning the Festivals to be celebrated. — 20. All which things the legates of the Armenians accepted.
1 Eugene, bishop, servant of the servants of God, for perpetual remembrance of the matter.
2 Rejoice in God our helper, make a joyful noise unto God of Jacob, all you who are everywhere accounted Christian by name. For behold, the Lord, mindful again of His mercy, has deigned to remove from His Church another stone of discord, hardened for more than nine hundred years, and He who maketh peace in the high places, and through whom on earth is peace to men of good will, has granted by His ineffable mercy the most desired union of the Armenians. Blessed be God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation, who consoleth us in all our tribulation. For the most pious Lord, beholding His Church, now tossed by great tempests from those without, now from those within, that it might have respite amid these straits and rise stronger to resist, deigns to console and strengthen it daily in many ways.
3 § 1. For indeed, that great union of the Greeks, which long ago united many nations and tongues spread far and wide, and now this very union of the Armenian people, who are diffused in great multitude toward the North and East, has been established in the same bond of faith and charity with the Apostolic See. These are truly so great and wonderful are the benefits of divine mercy, that human understanding could not render thanks worthy of His Majesty not only for both, but scarcely even for one. Who would not greatly marvel that in one and the same so brief time, two such splendid works, desired for ages, have been so happily accomplished in this sacred council? Truly this is the Lord's doing, and it is wonderful in our eyes. For how could human prudence or industry, unless the grace of God had both begun and perfected it, have been able to accomplish such great and such matters? Let us praise unceasingly, and with our whole heart bless the Lord, who alone hath done great wonders, and to Him let us sing in spirit, let us sing also with the mind, with mouth and deed, as far as human frailty permits, and let us give thanks for such great gifts, praying and beseeching that, just as the Greeks and Armenians themselves have become one with the Roman Church, so may the other nations also become so, especially those marked with the character of Christ, and let the whole Christian people, with all hatreds and wars extinguished, rest and rejoice in mutual peace and fraternal charity.
4 § 2. We judge the Armenians themselves to be worthy of great praise and commendation. For as soon as they were summoned by us to the synod, as eager for ecclesiastical unity, they sent respectable, devout and learned orators with sufficient mandate, namely for receiving whatever the Holy Spirit should illuminate this holy synod, from the most remote regions through many labors and perils of the sea, to us and to this sacred council.
5 § 3. We truly, with our whole mind, as our pastoral office befitted with kindness, desiring to perfect so holy a work, often conferred with the orators themselves concerning this holy union, and lest any delay befall this holy matter, we appointed from every rank of this sacred council men most learned in divine and human law, who with all care, zeal and diligence might treat this matter with these orators, inquiring from them carefully concerning their faith, both regarding the unity of the divine essence and the Trinity of the divine persons, and the humanity of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the seven sacraments of the Church, and other matters pertaining to orthodox faith and the rites of the universal Church.
6 § 4. Therefore, after many disputations, colloquies and discussions had been employed, and after a not inconsiderable examination of testimonies, which have been drawn from the holy Fathers and Doctors of the Church, and discussion of the matters which were in question, we finally judged it expedient, lest any hesitation concerning the truth of faith should be able to exist among the Armenians in the future, and that they might in all things be of one mind with the Apostolic See, and that the union itself might endure stable and perpetual without any scruple, that under a certain brief compendium of orthodox faith, the truth which the Roman Church professes concerning the aforesaid matters, through this decree of Christ, approved by this Florentine council, we should deliver to the orators themselves, who also consented to this.
7 § 5. First, therefore, we delivered to them the holy Symbol, the Creed, issued by one hundred fifty bishops in the ecumenical Council of Constantinople, with that addition, and the Son, rightly and reasonably appended to the Symbol itself for the sake of declaring the truth and urgent necessity, whose tenor is: I believe in one God, etc. We decree that this holy Symbol, as is the custom among the Latins, shall be sung or read throughout all the Churches of the Armenians during the solemnities of the Mass, at least on every Sunday and on the greater festivals.
8 § 6. Secondly, we hand down to them the definition of the holy and ecumenical Council of Chalcedon, renewed afterwards in the fifth and sixth ecumenical councils, concerning the two natures in one person of Christ, the tenor of which is as follows: It would indeed suffice for the wise and saving Symbol of divine grace to provide full knowledge and confirmation of piety. For it teaches perfection concerning the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, and presents the humanity of the Lord to those who receive it faithfully. But because those who endeavor to reject the preaching of truth through their own heresies have generated new expressions, and some indeed presuming to corrupt the mystery of the dispensation of the Lord, which was made for us: others introducing confusion and mixture, and foolishly fabricating that there is one nature of flesh and divinity, and saying that the divine nature of the Only-begotten is passible as a portent: for this reason, wishing to close every device against truth to them, the present holy and great and ecumenical synod, teaching this preaching immovable from the beginning, has decreed that the faith of the three hundred and eighteen holy Fathers remain irrefutable before all things, and in later time, on account of those indeed who fight against the Holy Spirit, it confirms the doctrine concerning the substance of the Spirit, handed down by the Fathers gathered one hundred and fifty at Constantinople, which they made known to all, not as if bringing forward something less in the preceding, but declaring their understanding of the Holy Spirit by the testimonies of the Scriptures, against those who attempted to reject his dominion. On account of those, however, who endeavor to corrupt the mystery of the dispensation, and rave impudently, saying that he who was born of the holy Virgin Mary is a mere man, it has received the synodical letters of the blessed Cyril, once bishop of the Church of Alexandria, to Nestorius and to the Orientals, being suitable for confuting the madness of Nestorius, and for the interpretation of those who desired with pious zeal to know the mind of the saving Symbol. To which it has also most consistently adapted the letter of the great and elder bishop of the city of Rome, the most blessed and most holy Pope Leo, which was written to the archbishop of holy memory Flavian, to remove the evil understanding of Eutyches, as being congruent with that great Peter's confession, and existing for us as a certain common pillar against wicked dogmas and for the confirmation of right dogmas. For it has resisted those who endeavor to tear asunder the mystery of the divine dispensation into two sons; and it has expelled from the sacred assembly those who dared to say the divinity of the Only-begotten is passible; and it resists those who seek a mixture or confusion in the two natures of Christ; and it rejects as mad those who say that the form of a servant, which he assumed from us, is heavenly, or of some other substance; and it anathematizes those who fable that there were indeed two natures of the Lord before the union, but one after the union. Following therefore the holy Fathers, we all teach in agreement that one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, is to be confessed, the same perfect in divinity, the same perfect in humanity, truly God and truly man, the same of a rational soul and body, consubstantial with the Father according to divinity, and consubstantial with us the same according to humanity; in all things like unto us without sin, begotten indeed of the Father before the ages according to divinity, and in the last days the same for us and for our salvation of Mary the Virgin Mother of God according to humanity; one and the same Christ, true Son, Lord, Only-begotten, to be acknowledged in two natures unconfusedly, unchangeably, indivisibly, inseparably; the difference of the natures being by no means taken away on account of the union, but rather the property of each nature being preserved and concurring into one person and subsistence, not parted or divided into two persons, but one and the same Son, Only-begotten, God, true Lord Jesus Christ, as the prophets of old concerning him, and Jesus Christ himself has taught us, and the Symbol of the holy Fathers has handed down to us.
9 § 7. Third, the definition concerning the two wills and the two operations of Christ promulgated in the aforesaid sixth council, the tenor of which is as follows: It would suffice indeed, and the rest which, in the same definition of the Council of Chalcedon set forth above, follow unto the end, after which follows in this manner: And we proclaim two natural wills in Him, and two natural operations undivided, unconvertible, inseparable, unconfused, according to the doctrine of the holy Fathers, and we proclaim two natural wills not contrary, as the impious heretics have asserted, but following His human will, and not resisting or reluctant, but rather subject to His divine and omnipotent will. For it was necessary that the will of the flesh be moved and subject to the divine will, according to the most wise Athanasius. For just as His flesh is said to be and is the flesh of God the Word, so also the natural will of His flesh is said to be and is the proper will of God the Word, as He Himself says: Because I came down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him that sent Me, the Father; speaking of His own proper will, which was the will of His flesh. For His flesh also became His own. For just as His most holy and immaculate soul and His flesh were deified, it was not destroyed, but remained in its own state and nature; so also His human will was deified, it was not destroyed, but rather was saved, according to the divine Gregory saying: For the willing of Him who is understood in the Saviour is not contrary to God: all has been deified, for we glorify two natural operations undivided, unconvertible, unconfused, inseparable in the same Lord Jesus Christ true God in the manner of glory, that is the divine operation and the human operation, according to the divine preacher Leo, asserting most clearly: For both forms act with the communion of the other, what is proper to each, namely the Word operating what is of the Word, and the flesh executing what is of the flesh: for we shall not attribute in anyone a single natural operation of God and creature, nor do we lead what is created into the divine essence, nor do we cast down what is exalted in divine nature to a place befitting creatures. For we know both the miracles and the sufferings of one and the same, according to one and another aspect of those from which it is composed of natures, and in which it has being, as the admirable Cyril says. Wherefore preserving everywhere unconfused and undivided the one of the Holy Trinity, in a brief word we set forth all things: and after the Incarnation, believing our Lord Jesus Christ to be true God, we assert that He has two natures, subsisting in one subsistence of His, in which both miracles and sufferings through all His dispensative conversation, not through phantasm, but in truth He demonstrated, on account of the natural difference to be known in the same one subsistence, while each nature with the communion of the other, undivided and unconfused, would will and operate what is proper to it, according to which reasoning, and we confess two natural wills and operations, concurring fittingly in Him for the salvation of mankind.
10 § 8. Fourth, since hitherto the Armenians themselves heard, besides these three, the Nicene, Constantinople, and the first Ephesine, that no other universal councils were celebrated afterwards, nor did they receive the most blessed pontiff of this holy See himself, Leo, by whose authority the Chalcedon synod itself was gathered together, asserting that the same had been suggested to them, both the synod itself of Chalcedon and the aforesaid Leo, according to the condemned heresy of Nestorius, had made a definition: we instructed them and declared that such a false suggestion had been made, and that the same synod of Chalcedon and the most blessed Leo, holily and rightly defined the truth concerning the two natures in one person of Christ described above, against the impious dogmas of Nestorius and Eutyches, and we enjoined that the same most blessed Leo, who was a pillar of the true faith, and filled with all sanctity and doctrine, as a saint, and deservedly inscribed in the catalogue of saints, henceforth they regard and venerate, and that not only the said three synods, but also all other universal councils, legitimately celebrated by the authority of the Roman Pontiff, just as also other faithful, they reverently receive.
11 of B. Leo of Constantinople and Leo the First, whose veneration [[fn:]] no other universal councils celebrated afterwards, nor did they receive the most blessed Leo himself, this holy See's predecessor, by whose authority the Council of Chalcedon itself was convened, asserting that it had been suggested to them that both the same Council of Chalcedon and the aforesaid Leo had made a definition according to the condemned heresy of Nestorius: We instructed them and declared that such a false suggestion had been made, and that the same Council of Chalcedon and the most blessed Leo had defined most holily and rightly the truth concerning the two natures in the one person of Christ described above, against the impious dogmas of Nestorius and Eutyches, and We enjoined that they regard and venerate the same most blessed Leo, who was a pillar of the true faith and filled with all sanctity and learning, as a saint and deservedly inscribed in the catalogue of saints, and that henceforth they reverently receive not only the said three councils, but also all other universal councils legitimately celebrated by the authority of the Roman Pontiff, just as other faithful do.
12 § 9. Fifth, the truth of the sacred sacraments of the Church, for the instruction of the faithful, both present and future, we have set forth in this very brief formula. There are seven sacraments of the New Law, namely Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Penance, Extreme Unction, Order and Matrimony, which differ greatly from the sacraments of the Old Law. For those did not cause grace, but only foreshadowed that it was to be given through the passion of Christ: but these of ours both contain grace, and confer it upon those who receive them worthily. Of these, the first five are ordained to the spiritual perfection of each man in himself, the last two to the governance and multiplication of the whole Church. For through Baptism we are born again spiritually; through Confirmation we are increased in grace and strengthened in faith; being born again and strengthened, we are nourished by the divine food of the Eucharist; but if through sin we incur sickness of soul, through Penance we are healed spiritually; and also spiritually and bodily (as is expedient for the soul) through Extreme Unction. Through Order the Church is governed and multiplied spiritually. Through Matrimony it is increased bodily. All these sacraments are perfected by three things, namely by things as matter, by words as form, and by the person of the minister conferring the sacrament, with the intention of doing what the Church does, any one of which if lacking, the sacrament is not perfected. Among these sacraments three are, Baptism, Confirmation and Order, which imprint a character, that is a certain spiritual sign distinctive from others indelibly upon the soul. Whence they are not repeated in the same person. But the remaining four do not imprint a character, and admit of repetition.
13 § 10. The first place among all the sacraments is held by holy Baptism, which is the gate of the spiritual life; for through it we are made members of Christ and of the body of the Church. And since through the first man death entered into all, unless we are born again of water and the Spirit, we cannot (says the Truth) enter into the kingdom of heaven. The matter of this sacrament is true and natural water, nor does it matter whether it be cold or hot. But the form is: I baptize thee in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We do not, however, deny that the baptism is also truly perfected through those words, Let such a servant of Christ be baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit; or Let such a one be baptized by my hands in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: because, since the principal cause from which baptism has its power is the Holy Trinity, but the instrumental
14 cause is the minister, who administers the sacrament outwardly, if the action which is exercised through the minister be expressed with invocation of the Holy Trinity, the sacrament is perfected. The minister of this sacrament is a priest, to whom it belongs by office to baptize. But in case of necessity, not only a priest or deacon, but also a layman or woman, indeed even a pagan and a heretic can baptize, provided they observe the form of the Church, and intend to do what the Church does. The effect of this sacrament is the remission of all original and actual guilt, and also of all punishment which is owed for that guilt. Therefore no satisfaction is to be imposed upon the baptized for past sins; but those dying, before they commit any guilt, straightway attain to the kingdom of heaven and the vision of God.
15 § 11. The second sacrament is Confirmation, whose matter is chrism made from oil, which signifies the brightness of conscience, and balsam, which signifies the odor of good repute, blessed by a bishop. But the form is: I sign thee with the sign of the cross, and I confirm thee with the chrism of salvation, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The ordinary minister is a bishop. And although a simple priest may administer the other anointings, this one ought to be conferred by none but a bishop, because it is read of the apostles alone, whose place bishops hold, that through the imposition of hands they gave the Holy Spirit, as the reading of the Acts of the Apostles makes manifest. For when the apostles (it says) who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John. Who, when they were come, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for as yet he was fallen upon none of them, but they were only baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands upon them, and they received the Holy Spirit. In place of that imposition of hands, confirmation is given in the Church. It is read, however, sometimes through Apostolic
16 of the Apostolic See a dispensation, from a reasonable and most urgent cause, a simple priest, with chrism prepared by a bishop, has administered this sacrament of confirmation. Now the effect of this sacrament is that in it the Holy Spirit is given for strength, as He was given to the apostles on the day of Pentecost, so that namely a Christian may boldly confess the name of Christ. For this reason the one to be confirmed is anointed on the forehead, where the seat of shame is, lest he blush to confess the name of Christ, and especially His cross, which to the Jews is a scandal, but to the Gentiles foolishness, according to the Apostle, on account of which he is signed with the sign of the cross.
17 § 12. The third is the sacrament of the Eucharist, whose matter is wheaten bread and wine from the vine, to which before consecration a very small amount of water must be mixed. Now water is mixed for this reason, because, according to the testimonies of the holy Fathers and doctors of the Church, previously set forth in the discussion, it is believed that the Lord Himself instituted this sacrament in wine mixed with water; secondly, because this is fitting for the representation of the Lord's passion. For blessed Alexander the pope, the fifth from blessed Peter 1, says: In the offerings of the sacraments, which are offered to the Lord within the solemnities of the masses, bread alone and wine mixed with water are to be offered in sacrifice. For neither wine alone nor water alone ought to be offered in the chalice of the Lord, but both mixed together; because both, that is blood and water, are read to have flowed from the side of Christ. Then also, because it is fitting for signifying the effect of this sacrament, which is the union of the Christian people to Christ. For water signifies the people, according to that passage of the Apocalypse: Many waters, many peoples. And Julius the pope, the second after blessed Sylvester, says: The chalice of the Lord, according to the precept of the canons, ought to be offered mixed with wine and water; because we see that in water the people are understood, but in wine the blood of Christ is shown. Therefore when wine and water are mixed in the chalice, the people are united to Christ, and the faithful multitude, in whom it believes, is joined and united. Since therefore both the most holy Roman Church, taught by the most blessed apostles Peter and Paul, and all the other Churches of the Latins and Greeks, in which all the lights of holiness and doctrine have shone forth, have thus observed from the beginning of the nascent Church and now observe, it seems altogether unfitting that any other region should depart from this universal and reasonable observance. We therefore decree that the Armenians themselves also conform to the whole Christian world, and their priests in the offering of the chalice mix a little water (as has been said) with the wine. The form of this sacrament is the words of the Savior, by which He made this sacrament. For by the power of those very words, the substance of bread is converted into the Body of Christ, and the substance of wine into the Blood, in such a way however that the whole Christ is contained under the species of bread, and the whole under the species of wine; and under any part also of the consecrated host and consecrated wine, separation being made, the whole Christ is present. The effect of this sacrament, which it works in the soul of one receiving it worthily, is the union of man to Christ. And because by grace man is incorporated into Christ, he is united to His members, it follows that by this sacrament in those receiving it worthily grace is increased, and whatever effect material food and drink have as to bodily life, by sustaining, increasing, repairing and delighting, this sacrament works as to spiritual life; in which (as Urban the Pope says) we recall the grateful memory of our Savior, we are drawn back from evil, we are strengthened in good, and we advance to the increase of virtue and graces.
18 § 13. The fourth sacrament is Penance, whose matter as it were consists of the acts of the penitent, which are distinguished into three parts. The first of which is contrition of heart, to which it pertains that he grieve over the sin committed with the purpose of not sinning hereafter. The second is confession of the mouth, to which it pertains that the sinner confess all his sins, of which he has memory, to his priest integrally. The third is satisfaction for sins according to the judgment of the priest, which is made chiefly through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The form of this sacrament is the words of absolution, which the priest utters, when he says: I absolve thee, etc. The minister of this sacrament is a priest, having authority to absolve either ordinarily or by commission of a superior. The effect of this sacrament is absolution from sins.
19 § 14. The fifth sacrament is Extreme Unction, whose matter is oil of olives blessed by a bishop. This sacrament ought not to be given except to the sick, concerning whom death is feared, and it is to be applied to these parts: in the eyes on account of sight, in the ears on account of hearing, in the nostrils on account of smell, in the mouth on account of taste or speech, in the hands on account of touch, in the feet on account of walking, in the loins on account of the pleasure that is vigorous there. The form of this sacrament is this: By this unction and His most merciful compassion, may the Lord forgive thee whatsoever thou hast sinned by sight, etc. And similarly in the other members. The minister of this sacrament is a priest. The effect indeed is the healing of the mind and, insofar as it is expedient, also of the body itself. Concerning this sacrament the blessed Apostle James inquired: Is any one sick among you? Let him bring in the priests of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick man, and the Lord shall raise him up: and if he be in sins, they shall be forgiven him.
20 § 15. The sixth sacrament is Order, whose matter is that by the handing over of which order is conferred, just as the priesthood is handed over through the presentation of the chalice with wine and the paten with bread. The diaconate indeed through the giving of the book of the Gospels. The subdiaconate indeed through the presentation of an empty chalice,
21 The rule of faith published by St. Athanasius;
22 Decree of the union of the Greeks;
23 Feasts to be celebrated on the appointed day.
24 with an empty paten placed over it, the handing over: and similarly concerning the others, through the assignment of things pertaining to their ministries. The form of the priesthood is thus: Receive the power to offer sacrifice in the Church for the living and the dead, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And thus concerning the forms of the other orders, as is contained at length in the Roman Pontifical. The ordinary minister of this sacrament is a bishop. The effect is an increase of grace, so that one may be a fit minister. *
25 § 16. The seventh sacrament is Matrimony, which is a sign of the union of Christ and the Church*, according to the Apostle saying: This sacrament is a great one, but I speak in Christ and in the Church. The efficient cause of matrimony is regularly mutual consent expressed in words concerning the present. There is assigned indeed a threefold good of matrimony. The first is offspring to be received and educated for the worship of God. The second is fidelity, which one spouse ought to keep toward the other. The third is the indissolubility of matrimony, because of this that it signifies the indissoluble union of Christ and the Church. Although indeed on account of the cause of fornication it is permitted to make a separation, nevertheless it is not lawful to contract another matrimony, since the bond of matrimony legitimately contracted is perpetual.
26 § 17. Sixth, that concise rule of faith, published by the most blessed Athanasius, we provide to the same orators, whose tenor is thus: Whosoever will be saved, etc.
27 § 18. Seventh, the decree of union with the Greeks consummated, formerly promulgated in this sacred ecumenical Council of Florence, whose tenor is thus: Eugenius, etc. Let the heavens rejoice, etc.
28 § 19. Eighth, since, among other things, there has also been dispute with the Armenians themselves concerning which days the feasts of the Annunciation of the blessed Mary the Virgin, the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and consequently the Nativity and Circumcision of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Presentation of the same in the temple, or the Purification of the blessed Virgin Mary, ought to be celebrated, and the truth has been made sufficiently clear both by the testimonies of the holy Fathers and by the custom of the Roman Church and of all others universally among the Latins and Greeks: lest therefore, in such great celebrations, the rite of Christians be different, whence an occasion for disturbing charity might arise, we decree, as consonant with truth and reason, and according to the observance of the whole rest of the world, that the Armenians themselves also ought solemnly to celebrate the feast of the Annunciation of the blessed Mary on 25 March, the Nativity of St. John the Baptist on 24 June, the Nativity indeed according to the flesh of our Saviour on 25 December, the Circumcision of the same on 1 January, the Epiphany on 6 of the same January, the Presentation of the Lord in the temple or the Purification of the Mother of God on 2 February.
29 § 20. All these things having been explained, the orators of the Armenians, in the name of their patriarch and of all the Armenians, accept, receive and embrace this most salutary synodal decree with all its chapters, declarations, definitions, traditions, precepts and statutes, and all the doctrine described in it; and likewise whatsoever the holy Apostolic See and the Roman Church holds and teaches, with all devotion and obedience. Those doctors also and holy Fathers whom the Roman Church approves, they reverently receive. Whatsoever persons indeed, and whatsoever the Roman Church condemns and reprobates, they hold as reprobated and condemned. Professing, as true sons of obedience, in the name aforesaid, that they will faithfully obey the ordinances and commands of that Apostolic See.
30 Given at Florence, in a public synodal session solemnly celebrated in the greater church, in the year of Our Lord 1439, on the tenth day before the kalends of December, in the ninth year of Our pontificate.
31 Given on 22 November 1439, ninth year of the pontificate.

Forma liuius sacramenti snnt verba Salvaloris, quibus boc confecit sacramentum.
20 § 15. Sexlum sacramentum est Orordine; dinis, cuius materia est illud, per cuius tradilionem conferlur ordo, sicut presbyteratus tradilur per calicis cum vino, et patenae cum pane porreclionem. Diaconatus vero per libri Evangeliorum dationem. Subdiaconalus vero per calicis vacui, Matrimonio ;

22 Decreto nnionis Graeeoram;

21 Regola di fede edita da sant'Atanasio;
22 Decreto dell'unione dei Greci;
