Gloriosae Dominae

BENEDICT, BISHOP, SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD, FOR PERPETUAL REMEMBRANCE OF THIS MATTER
1 That the worship and veneration of the glorious Lady, the Mother of God, Mary, is greatly commended by the manifest will of God and by the true spirit of the Church always, and is no less justly than fruitfully exhibited to her by the faithful, we do not doubt is so manifest that our Apostolic exhortations to inflame the hearts of Christians with religious devotion toward her would seem almost superfluous.
2 For just as almighty God, having chosen this most blessed Virgin from thousands and exalted her to the ineffable dignity of Divine motherhood, the Angel announcing it, filled her with the gifts of his grace more abundantly than all other pure creatures, and adorned her with the most splendid crowns of glory above all other works of his hands; so also the Catholic Church, taught by the instruction of the Holy Spirit, has always professed most earnestly both to honor her as the Mother of the Lord and Redeemer and as the Queen of heaven and earth with the most devoted services, and to follow her as a most loving Mother, left to them by the dying voice of her Spouse at his last moment, with the affection of filial piety. To her aid in public calamities and disturbances, whatever have been stirred up by the force of the enemies of hell, it has been accustomed to flee as to the safest harbor of salvation, and by her power especially it confesses that all heresies throughout the whole world have been extinguished and overcome. She is that most fair Esther, whom the supreme King of kings so loved that he appears to have communicated to her not merely half of his kingdom but in a certain way his whole empire and power for the salvation of his people. She is that strong Judith, to whom God of Israel granted victory over all the enemies of his land. This same Church, by the concordant judgment of the Fathers, advises all her children to approach her with confidence in their particular necessities and dangers, as an Advocate before her Son and the only-begotten Son of God, speaking good things for us. She proclaims her the mystical Ark of the Covenant, in which the sacraments of our reconciliation have been fulfilled, which God regarding will remember his covenant and will be mindful of mercy. She is as a heavenly stream, through which the flowing waters of all graces and gifts are led into the bosom of the wretched. She is the golden gate of heaven, through which we trust one day to enter into the rest of eternal blessedness. Considering these and other things with himself, the Blessed Ignatius the Confessor, who, to promote the greater glory of God, increased the camps of the Church militant under the standard of the Most Holy Name of Jesus with legions enrolled under his command, when he foresaw a great struggle set before himself and his soldiers, for the salvation of each one no less than of others also, most wisely judged that the protection of the Blessed Virgin should be established as the most fitting safeguard for himself. Therefore, when first, having departed from his native home, already turning over great things in his heart, he determined to undertake the training of sacred warfare, he immediately betook himself to the feet of the Virgin herself and under her auspices entered upon the arduous path of perfection. But when afterwards, having made the first selection of his fellow soldiers, he was about to lead them into battle, nowhere else than in the temple of the Virgin, at Paris near the Mount of Martyrs, did he bind himself with them by solemn oath, and on this as it were most firm stone laid the first foundations of his Institute.
3 What was customary for him, namely that he would scarcely establish or undertake anything grave without first invoking the name of Mary, he wished to be a lesson to all his pupils, so that in performing the duties and labors of their profession, they would place the hope of Divine aid especially in her patronage, and in facing dangers for religion would trust that this Tower of Strength, from which hang a thousand shields, would be their refuge and defense from the face of the enemy. And so they, bearing throughout the breadth of lands and seas the adorable Name of Jesus before kings and nations, did not cease everywhere to announce at the same time the sweetest name of his Mother, and together with the light of faith and the holiness of morals, they marvelously propagated the worship and honor of the Mother of God in all the regions of both worlds.
4 But that institution, well and wisely established by them and used widely, is recognized to be this: namely, that while among the other exercises of their Institute by which they continue to render most useful service to the Church of God, they strive to imbue Christian youth everywhere with religion and good arts and to cultivate them, they take care that the same be aggregated to pious Sodalities or Congregations dedicated to the Most Holy Virgin, Mother of God, and specially bound to her obedience and service, under her discipline as it were, who is the Mother of fair love and fear and knowledge, and teach them to strive toward the summit of Christian perfection and to contend for the goal of eternal salvation.
5 From this praiseworthy and pious institution, enriched with holy and salutary laws variously adapted to the different condition of the Members, and carefully cultivated by the prudent diligence of particular Moderators, it is incredible how great a benefit has been derived to men of all ranks, since some, having embraced from tender years, under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin, the path of innocence and piety, have merited to preserve throughout all their ages the tenor of a well-ordered life, which befits a Christian man and servant of the Virgin, by the best example and the fruit of final perseverance; others, snatched from the allurements of vices by which they were miserably ensnared, and from the way of iniquity which they had entered, by the aid of the most merciful Mother of God, to whose service they had devoted themselves in these Sodalities, have been recalled to good fruit, and thereafter embracing a sober and just and pious manner of life, aided by the constant practice of sacred exercises in these Congregations, have most happily persevered therein; still others, from devout affection toward the Mother of God maturely conceived, have been raised to the more sublime degrees of divine charity, and with strong and great spirit abandoning the vain and fleeting goods and pleasures of this world, have migrated to a holier and safer state of regular life, and fixed to the cross of Christ by religious vows, have wholly devoted themselves to the promotion of their own perfection and the salvation of their neighbors.
6 From all these things it is clearly evident with how prudent and salutary counsel Our predecessors, the Roman Pontiffs, embraced from the very beginning the institution of such Congregations with Apostolic favor, and in order to foster and promote it, enriched the Moderators and Members thereof with many and singular graces and privileges.
7 For scarcely had Gregory XIII, of happy memory, learned that the first foundations of such an institution had in some manner been laid in the Church of the Blessed Mary Virgin of the Annunciation, situated in the body of the buildings of the Roman College, among the scholars flowing to that College, when he granted to those same scholars and to other Christ's faithful who devoted themselves to such praiseworthy works and exercises with them, certain Indulgences and remissions of sins. These, however, he afterwards greatly enlarged by Apostolic liberality, at such time as, desiring that the institution itself be propagated more and more throughout other parts of the world, to the glory of God and the honor of the Virgin and the fruit of public salvation, by the same alumni of the Society of Jesus, as he had come to know was happening, he deemed it worthwhile to erect and establish by Apostolic authority the Primary Congregation of this institution or Primary Sodality in the same Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Mary Virgin in the aforesaid Roman College, under the governance of the General Prepositus of the Society of Jesus, then and for the time being existing, or, he being absent or ceasing to be, under the governance also of the Vicar General of the same Society, so that all other Congregations and similar Sodalities erected and to be erected under the same title throughout various parts of the world should depend from this Primary Congregation or Primary Sodality as members from the head, and should receive from it the norm and example and the communication of Indulgences and graces; as is more fully contained in the letters of the same predecessor Gregory, given in the year of the Incarnation of the Lord 1584, on the ninth day of December, under lead, which are of the following tenor:
GREGORY BISHOP, SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD, FOR PERPETUAL REMEMBRANCE OF THE ALMIGHTY GOD. . . . « .*
8 But since this pious institution of Congregations of this kind, commended by universal applause and utility everywhere, had received such continual increases that it was often necessary in individual Colleges and Houses of the Society of Jesus itself to establish not one but several such Sodalities, according to the frequency and diversity of Members, Sixtus V, Pope of revered memory, likewise Our predecessor, granted to the General Prepositus of the same Society, then and for the time being existing, or also to the Vicar General, the faculty to erect and establish in any whatsoever Churches or Houses and Colleges of the Society itself any other Congregations and Sodalities, whether of scholars only or of other Christ's faithful only or of both together, both under the same title of the Blessed Mary Virgin of the Annunciation and under any other title and invocation whatsoever, and to aggregate those and these to the same Primary Congregation or Primary Sodality, and to communicate and extend to them all and singular the Indulgences and other graces and privileges, spiritual and temporal, granted and to be granted to the aforesaid Primary; by certain letters beginning SUPERNA DISPOSITIONE, given at St. Peter in the year of the Incarnation of the Lord 1586, on the ninth day of January, in the second year of his Pontificate, of the following tenor, namely:
SIXTUS BISHOP, SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD, FOR PERPETUAL REMEMBRANCE SUPERNA DISPOSITIONE. . . . .
9 And subsequently, because a certain occasion for doubt had arisen, by his other letters, at St. Mark in the year of Our Lord's Incarnation 1587, on the third day before the Kalends of October, issued and expanded, he declared that such erections, even in Colleges or Seminaries, and in other places under the direction, institution and governance of the same Society or of persons of that Society existing, similarly and with equal effect could be made by the same Superior or Vicar General; and he established other things, which in the second letters of the aforesaid Sixtus his predecessor are contained more distinctly, the tenor of which is as follows:
SIXTUS BISHOP, SERVANT OF THE SERVANTS OF GOD, TO PERPETUAL MEMORY OF THE MATTER IT IS FITTING FOR THE ROMAN . . . . .
10 The aforesaid faculty of erecting new Congregations or Sodalities of this kind, and of aggregating them to the said Primary Congregation founded in the Roman College, and of communicating to them the aforesaid Indulgences and spiritual graces, granted to the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, as is aforesaid, our predecessor of happy memory, Pope Clement VIII, likewise expanded by his letters given on the thirtieth day of August in the year 1602, under the Fisherman's Ring, so that it might be permitted to the same Superior General then and for the time being existing to aggregate to the same Primary Congregation any other similar Congregations at any Residences of Priests of the said Society of Jesus, wherever erected and afterwards to be erected, and to communicate to them these Indulgences and spiritual graces.
11 Which was also more openly, distinctly and abundantly granted and respectively declared by a predecessor likewise of similar memory, Gregory XV, by his other letters given on the fifteenth day of April in the year 1621, under the Fisherman's Ring likewise given, of the following tenor, namely:
GREGORY POPE XV TO PERPETUAL MEMORY OF THE MATTER . . . .
12 We finally, who, while we were engaged in lesser matters, enrolled among the Members of the Congregation of the Blessed Mary Virgin assumed into heaven at the Professed House of the aforesaid Society of Jesus of the City, willingly recall with great spiritual consolation to Us that we frequently attended the pious and religious exercises of that Sodality; judging it to pertain to the duty of our pastoral office to foster and promote by the aid of Apostolic authority and liberality such institutions of solid piety, by which Christian virtue is promoted and the salvation of souls is greatly aided, by our letters issued on the twenty-fourth day of the preceding month of April in the form of a Brief, we approved, confirmed, and also more widely extended and enlarged all the aforesaid concessions and graces of our predecessors, as is evident from the tenor of the same letters subjoined, which is as follows:
BENEDICT POPE XIV TO PERPETUAL MEMORY OF THE MATTER ILLUSTRIOUS ROMAN PONTIFFS . . . .
13 Now, however, in order to declare ever more clearly Our inclination toward such pious Sodalities, in which due religion toward God and the cult of the Blessed Virgin are continuously exercised with wholesome and praiseworthy works of piety, and likewise toward Our beloved son Francis Retz, Superior General of the aforesaid Society of Jesus, and the students of that same Society, whose strenuous and faithful labors in propagating or defending throughout the whole world the Catholic faith and the integrity and sanctity of Christian doctrine and piety, together with the cult of the Divine Name and of the Blessed Virgin, We hold in high regard; and whom We follow with singular affection of paternal charity on account of the devoted reverence which they profess and do not cease to exhibit toward Us and the Apostolic See; desiring to strengthen and even to augment the aforesaid concessions and favors with new force of Apostolic firmness; and absolving the same Francis, Superior General, and each of the students of the said Society from any excommunication, suspension and interdict and other ecclesiastical sentences, censures and penalties, whether by law or by man, imposed for any occasion or cause whatsoever, if they are bound by them in any way, for the purpose of obtaining the effect of these presents only, and considering them absolved; by Our own motion and from certain knowledge and mere liberality, and from the fullness of Apostolic power, We confirm and renew by Apostolic authority in the tenor of these presents, individually and in particular, all and each of the aforesaid letters of Gregory XIII, Sixtus V, Gregory XV, Our aforesaid predecessors, and Our recent letters, and all and singular the favors, concessions, faculties, Indulgences, remissions, relaxations, immunities and amplifications contained and expressed in them respectively. Indeed, considering it worthy and fitting that, just as the Primary Congregation or Primary Sodality aforesaid proceeds in the way of piety under the title and protection of the most glorious Mother of God, so also other Congregations of pious members which are or wish to be sharers in such spiritual favors may profit in the exercise of similar pious works under the patronage and auspices of so great a Virgin, and through this may be recognized as members befitting the head in relation to the same Primary Congregation or Primary Sodality: We decree and ordain that, if any such Sodality or Congregation shall exist in the Churches, Houses, Colleges or Residences of the Priests of the Society of Jesus, whose title is not indeed that of the Blessed Virgin Mary, but rather that of some Saint or of any other kind whatsoever; in order that it may be able henceforth to enjoy and possess the Indulgences and favors which have been granted to the aforesaid Primary Sodality or Primary Congregation, to which it may wish to be aggregated or has already been aggregated, by the Apostolic See, or which may perhaps be granted in the future, it ought to elect the Most Blessed Virgin Mary also as Patroness, and to assume and retain some mystery or feast of the same as its title, together with another Patron or title otherwise chosen for itself, or to be chosen hereafter.
14 For We by the aforesaid authority grant that the plenary Indulgence which the aforesaid predecessor, Pope Gregory XIII, granted to the same members and to all the faithful of Christ, truly penitent and confessed, and refreshed with the Sacrament of Communion, visiting the Church of the same Primary Congregation on the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Mary, and there praying to God the Best and Greatest according to the express intention of that same predecessor therein, in the aforesaid letters of the same, shall be considered as granted to the other Congregations aggregated or to be aggregated to the same Primary one, for that day on which such feast or mystery of the Blessed Virgin is celebrated and honored, by the title of whose feast or mystery such Congregations shall be distinguished.
15 And nevertheless to the same members and to all other whatsoever faithful of Christ, truly penitent and confessed, and refreshed with the Communion of the Eucharistic Bread, who shall visit the Church or Oratory or Chapel and place of such Congregations on the feast day of another such Patron, from first Vespers until sunset of that feast, or, if another such Patron and title be not present, on one other day in each year to be designated by the Moderator of any Congregation, namely from first Vespers until sunset of such day, and there shall have poured forth pious prayers to God for the concord of Christian Princes, the extirpation of heresies and the exaltation of Holy Mother Church, a similar plenary Indulgence, even applicable at the choice of each in suffrage for the souls of the faithful departed, without prejudice to another, for the feast or title of the Blessed Virgin as above, and of others similar granted to the same Congregations by Our predecessors, as aforesaid, with similar motion, knowledge and power We grant and bestow.

17 90 * We further decree that, if for any reason the place or Church or Oratory or Chapel designated for the Confraternity's meetings should be changed, or in any way, whether permanently or temporarily, be altered, or if, for the greater convenience of the people and more solemn celebration of the feast, both the principal title and the feast of the Patron and the feast of the secondary title should happen to be celebrated in another Church or Temple, by consent of the Moderator, nevertheless the same Indulgence shall equally benefit both the Confraternity members and any other faithful of Christ who duly visit such other Church or Temple or Oratory, as if they were visiting the customary and proper Church or Oratory or Chapel of the Confraternity itself and the place designated for its meetings; and further, insofar as one or the other of such titular feasts, or even both, cannot be celebrated on the proper day with sufficient solemnity by any of the aforesaid Congregations, it shall be permitted to the aforesaid General Prefect then and for the time being in office, or to the Superior of the place of the same Society, to designate another day — either a Sunday within the octave, or the octave day itself of the feast, or another day within the year — for the celebration of such festivities and for the acquisition of the granted Indulgence, according to the circumstances of each of such Congregations. In which case We also permit that, if the chosen day should be impeded by a double feast, one solemn votive Mass of such transferred feast may be celebrated.
18 Since, moreover, We ourselves, in Our aforesaid letters, having made provision for all the members of the same PRIMARY-PRIMARY and other Confraternities or Congregations of this kind aggregated to it, as aforesaid, and for those visiting the proper Church or Oratory, Chapel or place of each Confraternity once in a week, namely on one day on which the Confraternity's meeting is held, and there, as also aforesaid, praying, have likewise granted by Apostolic liberality a plenary Indulgence; and since it not infrequently happens that the aforesaid Confraternity members gather several times in a week for pious and customary exercises: lest perchance doubt should arise as to which of those days is appointed for obtaining the aforesaid Indulgence; We decree and declare that the aforesaid plenary Indulgence once in a week by both such Confraternity members and also by the ministers of the same Congregations or Confraternities, or those serving them — to whom, namely, so long as they are devoted to the service of such Congregations, all and singular Indulgences, remissions of sins and relaxations of penances heretofore granted both by Our predecessors and by Us, and perhaps to be granted in the future, by the tenor of these presents, We expressly extend and communicate to them — is to be acquired for that day which each of them shall choose for receiving the Most Holy
19 Eucharist and for fulfilling the other enjoined works; provided, however, that on the chosen day, whether in the morning or evening hours or even on the preceding evening, the meeting of the Confraternity members in the customary Oratory or Church or place shall be held. But We admonish and exhort in the Lord all and singular the aforesaid Confraternity members and ministers that they strive to enhance with worthy devoted submission and obedience the assiduity and frequency commended to them, which will greatly profit their spiritual welfare, which we trust they will show in these pious exercises of the Congregations; and thus not only in all other matters which shall pertain to the state and governance of the same Congregations shall the aforesaid General Prefect and the particular Moderators appointed by him never refuse to obey his mandates and counsels with eager and ready will; but in this matter also let them observe uniformity, and each one in turn set an example to the other Confraternity members; so that the day to be chosen by each one in individual weeks for obtaining this Indulgence, as far as it can be done, shall be the same day which the Moderator of each Confraternity or Congregation shall propose.
20 And since from the foregoing and from countless other manifestations of both Our will and that of Our predecessors it can sufficiently appear how much it is to Our heart that the Most Holy Sacraments of the Eucharist and Penance be received according to the mind of Holy Mother Church with frequent use and certain and abundant fruit by all the faithful of Christ and indeed by the members of such Confraternities; We greatly desire that a most useful and approved practice be inculcated in these same members, so that, just as the best counsel is given to each of them to prepare themselves by means of a General Confession of their entire past life upon their first entry into such Confraternities, so also, once or twice in each year, recalling their offences and sins, whether committed since the last General Confession or since the first use of reason, according to the counsel of a prudent Director, in bitterness of soul and detesting them with the spirit of true penance and with firm purpose of mind, and subjecting themselves to the judgment of a legitimate minister of the Church, they may strive increasingly to assert their own reconciliation with God and to promote day by day the amendment of their life and the increase of all virtues; so that thus continually renewed in the spirit of their mind and always confirmed and strengthened by new aids of heavenly grace, they may lead a life worthy of Christian profession and of special devotion to the Virgin, and, nourished by frequent participation in the divine Sacraments, may be prepared by their virtue finally to attain their promised rewards in heaven.

28 Therefore to the aforesaid members of these Confraternities, whosoever once or twice in the year, being truly penitent, shall have completed a General Confession in the manner aforesaid, and having done so shall have received the Sacred Eucharist, We grant a new and special grace, so that, although they receive the Eucharistic Bread not in their own Confraternity but in any other Church or Oratory or Chapel, as the reason of each one's devotion or convenience may have dictated, and there offer the prescribed prayers to God, nevertheless they may be able and empowered to obtain in such other Church or sacred place a plenary indulgence, which We have granted above to be obtained once in each week in the customary places of the Confraternity.
29 Finally, We earnestly commend to all and each of the members of the aforesaid Confraternities the charity of fraternity, both mutually among themselves and toward all the faithful of Christ, to be carefully preserved and diligently exercised; so that, continually performing the works of religion and mercy, intent upon the two precepts on which the whole law and the prophets depend, they may not cease to gladden and aid the Church of God.
30 Hence it is that We in Our aforesaid letters, foreseeing the greater necessity by which the faithful laboring under bodily infirmity stand in need of the aids of spiritual and temporal fraternal charity, among other indulgences which We have granted for the members exercising various works of piety, and which We have also expressly extended to persons devoted to the ministries and services of the Confraternities, have also granted special indulgences to those who, being admonished by the sound of the bell of the extreme agony or passing of any faithful person, shall have besought God the Best and Greatest for the health of the sick person or his happy passing, or for the rest of the deceased.
31 And moreover to all and each of the Moderators of the same Primary Confraternity as well as of the others aggregated to it, Priests of the same Society of Jesus, now and for the time being existing and in the future, who shall have visited the sick members or servants of these Confraternities with the permission of their Superiors, and shall have aided them with spiritual admonitions either for patiently bearing the discomforts of their illnesses or for willingly accepting death from the hand of the Lord, and shall have caused the Lord's Prayer and the Hail Mary to be recited at least three times before some image of the crucified Saviour according to Our mind and that of Holy Mother Church, on the day on which these same sick persons shall have received the Most Holy Sacrament of the Eucharist, so that they may be able and empowered to impart to them a plenary indulgence, even to be applied in suffrage for the faithful departed if they wish, by Apostolic authority delegated to them through these presents, We grant and indulge by similar motion, knowledge and fullness of power.
32 Moreover, to the public Oratory under the title of the Blessed Mary Virgin of Mercy and of St. Francis Xavier, near the aforesaid College, where the faithful of Christ dwelling in this holy City frequent salutary exercises of piety daily with the greatest fruit, and to its Prefect or Moderator, as well as to the Confraternity members and persons rendering assistance and aid to the same Oratory and its functions, we grant and communicate all and singular the Indulgences, remissions of sins, relaxations of penances and other spiritual graces conceded to the aforesaid Primary Congregation or Primary Sodality and its members by Us and the aforesaid predecessors of Ours, through the several letters inserted above and the present ones respectively, to be obtained by the due and proper performance of the enjoined work, even by the force of these present letters. By this, however, we do not intend to revoke any other Indulgences, even plenary ones, specially conceded to the Oratory and its Confraternity members and the aforesaid persons by the Apostolic See, nor in any way to derogate from them. Finally, these present letters can in no way at any time be noted, impugned, retracted or revoked on account of the vice of subreptiousness or obreption or nullity or of Our intention or any other defect whatsoever, but shall always and perpetually remain valid and efficacious and ought to produce and obtain their full and complete effects, nor shall they be comprehended under any revocations, suspensions, limitations, derogations or other contrary dispositions of similar or dissimilar graces, made at any time by Us or other Roman Pontiffs Our predecessors, or the Apostolic See, even by motu proprio, knowledge and fullness of power equal thereto; but they shall always be excepted from them and, as often as those shall be issued, so often shall they be restored to their pristine state, replaced and fully reintegrated, and ought to benefit most fully all and singular whom they concern; and if otherwise anything contrary to these should happen to be attempted by anyone, by whatever authority, knowingly or unknowingly, we decree it to be null and void.
33 Notwithstanding one of the Indulgences not to be conceded in like manner, and another by which we willed that in letters of Indulgences there be appended a clause that if to the Church or Churches or persons to whom Indulgences are conceded any other Indulgence should have been conceded of which special mention had not been made therein, such letters should be null; and notwithstanding other rules of Ours and of the Apostolic Chancery; as well as those of the aforesaid Clement Our predecessor issued concerning the manner and form of erecting and aggregating Confraternities, to which for the validity and effect of all and singular of the aforesaid, on this occasion only, we specially and expressly and most broadly and fully, by motu proprio, knowledge and fullness of power equal thereto, by the tenor of these letters we derogate; and notwithstanding other Apostolic Constitutions, as well as all those which each of the aforesaid predecessors willed not to stand in the way in their letters inserted above; and notwithstanding all other things to the contrary whatsoever.
34 We will, moreover, that to transcripts of the same present letters, even printed ones, subscribed by the hand of the Secretary of the aforesaid Society of Jesus or of a public Notary, and sealed with the seal of some person constituted in ecclesiastical dignity, or of the Prepositus or Vicar General of the same Society existing for the time being, the same faith be given everywhere as if they were exhibited or shown in the original. Let no one whatsoever be permitted to infringe this page of Our absolution, confirmation, decree, statute, concession, declaration, indult, derogation and will, or to dare to act contrary to it with rash presumption. If anyone, however, shall presume to attempt this, let him know that he will incur the indignation of Almighty God and of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul.
35 Given at Rome, at St. Mary Major, in the year of the Incarnation of the Lord 1748, on the twenty-sixth day of September, in the ninth year of Our Pontificate.
