LIBRO D'ORE. - Dal latino ecclesiastico «Horae» (le sette parti in cui è divisa l'ufficiatura divina) è un libro di devozione per uso dei fedeli caratterizzato dalla presenza del piccolo Ufficio della Vergine e dell'Ufficio dei defunti che ne costituiscono la parte essenziale. Composto in parte da testi liturgici provenienti dal Breviario, onde lo si potrebbe chiamare il Breviario del laico, il L. d'O. (in francese Livres d'Heures, inglese Prymer, spagnolo L. de Horas, tedesco Stundembuch) fa parte dell'ecologia extra-liturgica che ha alimentato la pietà dei fedeli negli ultimi secoli del medioevo e nei primi dell'evoluzione.
I. ORIGINE E CONTENUTO
Il L. d'O. non deve essere confuso né con i Libelli precumi o le Preces devotae, cui prototipi risalgono all'evoluzione carolino (cf. ed. di A. Wilmart, Precum libelli quattuor aevi Karolini, Roma 1940; id., Manuel de prières de st Jean Gualbert, in Rev. bénéd., 48 [1936], pp. 259-92, copia del sec. XI di un prototipo del sec. IX), né con il Salterio che è stato praticamente il libro di preghiera più comune fino a tutto il sec. XIII. Da Cornelimünster e dalle grandi abbazie benedettine carolingie (riforma di S. Benedetto di Aniane) ebbe origine l'uso, reso poi quasi universale dall'influenza di Cluny, di aggiungere all'ufficiatura corale un certo numero di preghiere supplementari, come i sette salmi penitenziali, le litanie dei santi, l'Ufficio dei defunti, il piccolo Ufficio della Vergine, suffragi in onore di Dio e dei santi. Sono appunto queste preghiere supplementari che diventarono gli elementi essenziali dei L. d'O., che nella tradizione manoscritta, sino alle prime edizioni a stampa della fine del sec. XV, si presentano con una ricca gamma di sfumature nei loro elementi costitutivi secondo tali. Solo con la stampa i vari tipi di L. d'O., a seconda del luogo della loro origine, assumono una fisionomia meglio determinata. All'origine il L. d'O. (fine sec. XII e XIII) cominciò ad essere un supplemento inserito alla fine del Salterio (rare volte al Messale, rarissime al Breviario) dal quale si staccò sul finire del sec. XIII, dando così origine, con l'aggiunta di alcuni elementi nuovi, al vero L. d'O. che i copisti del sec. XV moltiplicarono in modo straordinario (sul finire della guerra dei Cento anni era di moda possedere un L. d'O.) e che i ministri e gli editori del sec. XVI trasformarono in finissimi capolavori d'arte, d'una insuperabile gaiezza e vivezza di colori. Il Salterio - L. d'O. costituisce il punto di transizione dal Salterio propriamente detto al L. d'O. Da notare che le espressioni di Grandi o Piccole Ore (grandes petites Heures) si riferiscono soltanto al formato.Gli elementi essenziali del L. d'O. sono: 1) Il capendario, spesso volte arricchito dalla fantasia del copista; 2) i frammenti dei quattro Vangeli (Io. I, 1-14; Le. I, 26-38; Mt. 2, 1-12; Mc. 16, 14-20); 3) le orazioni alla Vergine Obsecro te e O Intemerata, si trovano in quasi tutti i manoscritti, ma in diverse redazioni; 4) il piccolo Ufficio della Vergine (Cursus oppure Hore Virginis Marie, donde il nome del libro) che ne è la parte essenziale. La struttura di questo Ufficio, di cui si hanno le prime notizie sul finire del sec. X, varia a seconda delle diocesi, abbazie o Ordini religiosi, ragione per cui va sempre studiato con particolare attenzione per conoscere il luogo d'origine del L. d'O. che lo contiene; 5) le Ore della Croce (Parvus ordo de Cruce c Ordo Magnus de Cruce); 6) le Ore dello Spirito Santo (Parve hore de Sancto Spiritus); 7) i sette salmi penitenziali (Pss. 6, 31, 37, 50, 101, 129, 142); 8) l'Ufficio dei defunti, di cui si hanno le prime testimonianze nel sec. IX. Anche la struttura di questo Ufficio varia da diocesi a diocesi, quindi va preso in considerazione per stabilire il luogo di origine del L. d'O., come si è detto per l'Ufficio della Vergine; 9) i suffragi (antifone, versetti e orazioni in onore di Dio e dei santi che nell'ufficiatura divina si recitano alle Lodi e ai Vespri; pochi nel sec. XI, sono straordinariamente numerosi nel sec. XIII); 10) le litanie dei santi (la presenza dei santi locali può servire per stabilire l'origine del libro). Gli elementi secondari o accessori, la cui presenza non è costante, sono: 1) il Passio secondo s. Giovanni (18, 1-19, 42); 2) le gioie della Vergine, le sette richieste a Nostro Signore; 3) i 15 salmi graduali (Pss. 119-33); 4) il Salterio di S. Girolamo, cioè oltre un centinaio di versetti tolti dai salmi 5-142; 5) altre preghiere in latino o in volgare, alcune d'una toccante ingenuità, ma talvolta con carattere superstizioso; 6) testi addirittura profani, ecc. Spese volte, ad onta della bellezza dei fregi e delle miniature, l'ortografia dei testi è molto difettosa; neppure le notissime Ore del duca di Berry vanno esenti da questa pecca. Da notare infine che la preparazione del L. d'O. era lasciata al libero arbitrio del committente o del copista, dato il suo carattere essenzialmente privato.
II. ARTE
Le miniature, molte a piena pagina, riempiono generalmente di ornati tutti i fogli dei L. d'O. e, oltre quelle religiose, sono notevoli quelle riferenti ai mesi del calendario, con composizioni di genere allegorico-naturalistico nelle quali l'artista\[\begin{align*}

potava logicamente esercitare con più libertà la sua fantasia, e i ritratti dei personaggi per i quali il libro veniva miniato. I L. d'O., infatti, risultano quasi sempre preparati per nobili e per regnanti, e merita-tamente celebri sono quelli di artisti francesi e fiamminghi; ma anche quelli italiani (lombardi specialmente) sono da annoverare tra le migliori produzioni di questo genere.
Di quelle italiane si ricordano qui le *Horae per Bianca Visconti* (Monaco, Staatsbibliothek, cod. 23.215), ornate tra il 1350 e il 1378 da Giovanni di Benedetto da Como; a quelle affini - forse opera della stessa bottega - le altre della Biblioteca nazionale di Parigi (ms. lat. 757), mi-niate ca. il 1380; le *Horae di Gian Galeazzo e Fil. Maria Visconti* (Firenze, Biblioteca Landau-Finaly), con minia-ture di Giovanni e Salomone de' Grassi e artisti della prima metà del '400; e le *Horae per Bona Sforza* (ca. 1484-94; British Museum Add. 34.294), con belle minia-ture, opera, forse, di Antonio da Monza. Dalla bottega fiorentina di Francesco di Antonio del Chierico sono invece uscite le *Horae per Lorenzo il Magnifico* (ca. 1490; Firenze, Biblioteca Laurenziana, Ashb. 1874), mentre fer-raresi dei primi del '500 sono le *Horae per Alfonso I d'Este*, in una raccolta privata di Parigi.
Di quelle di scuola francese e fiamminga sono cele-bri le *Heures de Jean Pucelle* (seconda metà del sec. XIV; Parigi, raccolta M. de Rothschild); le *Très riches Heures* di Chantilly, opera degli inizi del '400 dovuta in gran parte ai fratelli de Limbourg (Chantilly, Museo Condé, ms. lat. 1284); delle trentanove grandi miniature, due medie e ventiquattro piccole di questi famosi miniaturisti fiamminghi, sono ammirevoli soprattutto quelle del Ca-lendario, con rappresentazioni della vita cortigiana e ru-rale, piene di poesia e con dettagli naturalistici frutto di quell'osservazione diretta delle cose che caratterizzerà l'arte del XV sec.; le *Grandes* e le *Petites Heures de Jean de Berry* e le *Très Belles Heures de Bruxelles*, opera di Jacquemart de Hesdin, che risulta nel 1384 al servizio del famoso bibliofilo Jean de Berry; le *Horae di Torino* (Torino, Biblioteca nazionale; Principe Trivulzio e M. De Rothschild), con miniature che furono già ritenute quali prime opere di Jean Van Eyck e che rivelano raggiungi-menti pittorici già tutti quattrocenteschi; le *Grandes Heures de Rolan* (1a metà del sec. XV; Parigi, Bibliothèque na-tionale, ms. lat. 9471); le *Horae d'Etienne Chevalier* (Chantilly, Museo Condé e altrove), miniature ca. il 1455 da Jean Fouquet; le *Horae di Adelaide di Savoia duchesse di Borgogna* (prima metà sec. XV; Chantilly, Museo Condé, ms. lat. 1362); un L. d'O. datato 1460 e decorato per Mary van Vronenstein (o Voornesteyn), della scuola di Utrecht. Sulla fine del '400, nella scia dell'arte del Fouquet, Jean Bourdichon miniava le *Horae per Federico d'Aragona e Ferdinando I*, re di Napoli (Parigi, Bibliothèque nationale, ms. lat. 10.532), le bellissime *Horae per Anna di Bretagna* (Parigi, Bibliothèque nationale, ms. lat. 9474), ricche di 19 miniature a piena pagina, più le 12 del calendario, oltre ad una meravigliosa fioritura di decorazioni. Della metà del sec. XVI si ricorda il *Livre d'Heures dit de Jeanne* (la *Folle* (o anche L. d'H. Hennessy), con miniature di scuola fiamminga, uno dei gioielli della Bibliothèque de Bour-gogne a Bruxelles; e nella medesima Biblioteca, riferibili alla stessa mano, il *Livre d'Heures d'un Tournaisien*.
Un bell'esempio di miniatura inglese è quello offerto dalle *Horae per John Lancaster*, fratello di Enrico V (ca. 1414-35; Londra, British Museum).
Col sec. XVI ha termine la produzione delle *Horae* manoscritte e miniature e ad esse si sostituiscono quelle stampate, ornate da silografie. - Vedi tav. LXXXVI.
