The expedition of the men of Dan against Lais: in their way they rob Michas of his priest and his gods.

1In those days there was no king in Israel, and the tribe of Dan sought them an inheritance to dwell in: for unto that day they had not received their lot among the other tribes. In quel tempo non era re in Israele, e la tribù di Dan cercava luogo da stabilirvisi: perocché fino a quel giorno ella non aveva occupata la sua porzione tra le altre tribù.IN those dayes there was not a king in Israel, and the tribe of Dan sought possession for it selfe, that it might dwel therein: for vntil that day it had not receiued a lotte among the other tribes. 2So the children of Dan sent five most valiant men, of their stock and family, from Saraa and Esthaol, to spy out the land, and to view it diligently: and they said to them: Go, and view the land. They went on their way, and when they came to mount Ephraim, they went into the house of Michas, and rested there:Mandarono adunque i figliuoli di Dan cinque uomini di Saraa, e di Esthaol, i più valorosi della loro stirpe, e famiglia, a visitare diligentemente il paese, e disser loro: Andate, ed esaminate la terra. I quali, partiti che furono arrivarono al monte Ephraim, ed entrarono in casa di Micha, e vi si riposarono:Therfore the children of Dan sent fiue men of their stocke and familie most valiant from Saraa and Esthaol, that they might view the land, and diligently behold it, and they said to them: Goe, and consider the land. Who going forward when they were come into mount Ephraim, and had entered into the house of Michas, they rested there:Miserunt ergo filii Dan stirpis et familiæ suæ quinque viros fortissimos de Saraa et Esthaol, ut explorarent terram, et diligenter inspicerent: dixeruntque eis: Ite, et considerate terram. Qui cum pergentes venissent in montem Ephraim, et intrassent domum Michæ, requieverunt ibi: 3And knowing the voice of the young man the Levite, and lodging with him, they said to him: Who brought thee hither? what dost thou here? why wouldst thou come hither?E avendo riconosciuto il giovane Levita alla favella, e albergando con lui gli dissero: Chi ti ha condotto in questo luogo? che fai tu qui? e a qual fine ci se' venuto?and knowing the voice of the yong man the Leuite, and vsing his lodging, they said to him: Who brought thee hither? What doest thou here? For what cause wouldest thou come hither?et agnoscentes vocem adolescentis Levitæ, utentesque illius diversorio, dixerunt ad eum: Quis te huc adducit ? quid hic agis ? quam ob causam huc venire voluisti ? 4He answered them: Michas hath done such and such things for me, and hath hired me to be his priest. Who answered them: These, and these thinges hath Michas done to me, & hath hyred me for wages to be his priest.

5Then they desired him to consult the Lord, that they might know whether their journey should be prosperous, and the thing should have effect.E lo pregarono che consultasse il Signore, affinchè potesser sapere, se il loro viaggio sarebbe felice, e se il loro affare riuscirebbe. And they desired him that he would consult the Lord, that they might know whether they should goe on a prosperous iourney, and the thing should haue effect. 6He answered them: Go in peace: the Lord looketh on your way, and the journey that you go.Ed egli rispose loro: Andate in pace; il Signore seconda il vostro disegno, e il viaggio da voi intrapreso.Who answered them: Goe in peace: The Lord regardeth your way, and the iourney that you goe.Qui respondit eis: Ite in pace: Dominus respicit viam vestram, et iter quo pergitis. 7So the five men going on came to Lais: and they saw how the people dwelt therein without any fear, according to the custom of the Sidonians, secure and easy, having no man at all to oppose them, being very rich, and living separated, at a distance from Sidon and from all men.E partitisi que' cinque uomini giunsero a Lais, e videro come il popolo che l'abitava, vivea senza timori, tranquillo, e in pace, secondo il fare de' Sidoni, non avendo chi lo disturbasse, ed essendo grandemente ricco, e in lontananza da Sidone, e separato da tutti gli uomini. The fiue men therfore going came to Lais, & they saw the people dwelling in it without any feare, according to the custome of the Sidonians. secure and quiet, no man at al resisting them, & of greate riches, and separated farre from Sidon and from al men.Euntes igitur quinque viri venerunt Lais: videruntque populum habitantem in ea absque ullo timore, juxta consuetudinem Sidoniorum, securum et quietum, nullo ei penitus resistente, magnarumque opum, et procul a Sidone atque a cunctis hominibus separatum. 8And they returned to their brethren in Saraa and Esthaol, who asked them what they had done: to whom they answered:E se ne tornarono a' loro fratelli in Saraa, e in Esthaol; e interrogati da loro di quel che avessero fatto, risposero:And returning to their brethren in Saraa and Estaol, and asking what they had done they answered them:Reversique ad fratres suos in Saraa et Esthaol, et quid egissent sciscitantibus responderunt: 9Arise, and let us go up to them: for we have seen the land which is exceeding rich and fruitful: neglect not, lose no time: let us go and possess it, there will be no difficulty. Arise, and let vs goe vp to them: for we haue seene the Land exceding rich and plentiful: neglect not, slacke not: let vs goe, and possesse it, it wil be no labour.

10We shall come to a people that is secure, into a spacious country, and the Lord will deliver the place to us, in which there is no want of any thing that groweth on the earth. We shal enter vnto them being secure, into a most large countrie, and our Lord wil deliuer to vs the place, wherein is penurie of nothing, of those thinges that grow on the earth.Intrabimus ad securos, in regionem latissimam, tradetque nobis Dominus locum, in quo nullius rei est penuria eorum quæ gignuntur in terra. 11There went therefore of the kindred of Dan, to wit, from Saraa and Esthaol, six hundred men, furnished with arms for war.Partirono adunque da Saraa, ed Esthaol secento uomini della stirpe di Dan armati come per fare battaglia,There departed therfore from the kinred of Dan, that is to say, from Saraa and Esthaol six hundred men, furnished with warlike armour,Profecti igitur sunt de cognatione Dan, id est, de Saraa et Esthaol, sexcenti viri accincti armis bellicis, 12And going up they lodged in Cariathiarim of Juda: which place from that time is called the camp of Dan, and is behind Cariathiarim.E giunti presso a Cariathiarim di Giuda, ivi si fermarono: quel luogo da quel tempo fu nomato il campo di Dan, ed è dietro a Chariathiarim.and going vp they taried in Cariathiarim of Iuda: which place from that time tooke the name of the Tentes of Dan, and it is at the backe of Cariathiarim.ascendentesque manserunt in Cariathiarim Judæ: qui locus ex eo tempore Castrorum Dan nomen accepit, et est post tergum Cariathiarim. 13From thence they passed into mount Ephraim. And when they were come to the house of Michas,Di dove passarono al monte di Ephraim. E giunti che furono presso alla casa di Micha,Thence they passed into mount Ephraim. And when they were come to the house of Michas,Inde transierunt in montem Ephraim. Cumque venissent ad domum Michæ, 14The five men, that before had been sent to view the land of Lais, said to the rest of their brethren: You know that in these houses there is an ephod and theraphim, and a graven and a molten god: see what you are pleased to do.Dissero i cinque uomini mandati già a visitare la terra di Lais, agli altri loro fratelli: Voi sapete che in questa casa ci è un Ephod, de' Theraphim, e un simulacro scolpito, e un di getto: pensate quel che vi paja di fare.the fiue men, that before had been sent to view the Land of Lais, said to the rest of their brethren: You know that in these houses there is an Ephod, and Theraphim, and a grauen, and molten god: See what pleaseth you.dixerunt quinque viri, qui prius missi fuerant ad considerandam terram Lais, ceteris fratribus suis: Nostis quod in domibus istis sit ephod, et theraphim, et sculptile, atque conflatile: videte quid vobis placeat.

15And when they had turned a little aside, they went into the house of the young man the Levite, who was in the house of Michas: and they saluted him with words of peace.E usciti un po' fuori di strada entrarono nell'abitazione del giovane Levita, il quale stava con Micha: e lo salutarono con dolci parole. And when they had turned a litle aside, they entred into the house of the yong man the Leuite, which was in the house of Michas: and saluted him with peaceable wordes. 16And the six hundred men stood before the door, appointed with their arms.E i secento uomini armati com'erano, stavano davanti alla porta. And the six hundred men so as they were armed, stoode before the doore. 17But they that were gone into the house of the young man, went about to take away the graven god, and the ephod, and the theraphim, and the molten god, and the priest stood before the door, the six hundred valiant men waiting not far off.E quelli che erano entrati nell'abitazione del giovane, si affaccendavano per pigliare la statua, e l'Ephod: e i Teraphim, e il simulacro di getto; e il sacerdote stava alla porta, mentre i secento uomini di sommo valore stavano in poca distanza aspettando. But they, that were entred the house of the yong man, endeuoured to take away the grauen, the Ephod, and the idols, and molten god, and thepriest stoode before the doore, the six hundred most valiant men expecting not farre of.At illi, qui ingressi fuerant domum juvenis, sculptile, et ephod, et theraphim, atque conflatile tollere nitebantur, et sacerdos stabat ante ostium, sexcentis viris fortissimis haud procul expectantibus. 18So they that were gone in took away the graven thing, the ephod, and the idols, and the molten god, And the priest said to them: What are you doing? They therfore that were entred tooke the grauen, the Ephod, the theraphim and molten god. To whom the priest said: What doe you? Quibus dixit sacerdos: Quid facitis ? 19And they said to him: Hold thy peace, and put thy finger on thy mouth, and come with us, that we may have thee for a father, and a priest. Whether is better for thee, to be a priest in the house of one man, or in a tribe and family in Israel? To whom they answered: Hold thy peace, and put thy finger vpon thy mouth and come with vs, that we may haue thee for a father, and a priest. Whether is better for thee, that thou be a priest in the house of one man, or in one tribe and familie in Israel?

20When he heard this, he agreed to their words, and took the ephod, and the idols, and the graven god, and departed with them. Which when he had heard, he agreed to their wordes, and tooke the Ephod, and idols, and grauen god, and departed with them. 21And when they were going forward, and had put before them the children and the cattle, and all that was valuable,E quelli partitisi, e avendo fatto andare innanzi i bambini, e i bestiami, e tutto quel che aveano di più caro,Who when they went forward, and had made the children and the cattel to goe before them, and al that was percious,Qui cum pergerent, et ante se ire fecissent parvulos ac jumenta, et omne quod erat pretiosum, 22And were now at a distance from the house of Michas, the men that dwelt in the houses of Michas gathering together followed them,Ed essendo già lontani dalla casa di Micha, la gente che abitava nella casa di Micha, gl'inseguì con alte grida, and were now farre from the house of Michas, the men that dwelt in the house of Michas crying out together folowed,et jam a domo Michæ essent procul, viri qui habitabant in ædibus Michæ conclamantes secuti sunt, 23And began to shout out after them. They looked back, and said to Michas: What aileth thee? Why dost thou cry?E principiarono a fare schiamazzo dietro a loro. Ed eglino rivoltatisi indietro dissero a Micha: Che vuoi? perchè gridi tu?and at their backe began to shoute. Who looking backe, said to Michas: What meanest thou? Why doest thou crie?et post tergum clamare cœperunt. Qui cum respexissent, dixerunt ad Micham: Quid tibi vis ? cur clamas ? 24And he answered: You have taken away my gods which I have made me, and the priest, and all that I have, and do you say: What aileth thee? Who answered: My Goddes, which I made me, you haue taken away, and the priest, and al that I haue, and doe you say: What aileth thee?Qui respondit: Deos meos, quos mihi feci, tulistis, et sacerdotem, et omnia quæ habeo, et dicitis: Quid tibi est ? 25And the children of Dan said to him: See thou say no more to us, lest men enraged come upon thee, and thou perish with all thy house. And the children of Dan said to him: Beware thou speake no more vnto vs, and there come vnto thee men prouoked in mind, and thou with al thy house perish.

26And so they went on the journey they had begun. But Michas seeing that they were stronger than he, returned to his house.E così eglino seguitarono il viaggio incominciato. And so they went on their iourney begone. But Michas seing that they were stronger then he, returned into his house. 27And the six hundred men took the priest, and the things we spoke of before, and came to Lais, to a people that was quiet and secure, and smote them with the edge of the sword: and the city they burnt with fire,E i secento uomini menaron via il sacerdote, e quel che si è già detto: e arrivarono a Lais a quel popolo tranquillo, e senza sospetto, e ne fecer macello, e incendiarono la città.And the six hundred men tooke the priest, and the thinges which we spake of before, and came into Lais to a people that was quiet and secure, and stroke them in the edge of the sword: and the citie they deliuered to fyre,Sexcenti autem viri tulerunt sacerdotem, et quæ supra diximus: veneruntque in Lais ad populum quiescentem atque securum, et percusserunt eos in ore gladii: urbemque incendio tradiderunt, 28There being no man at all who brought them any succour, because they dwelt far from Sidon, and had no society or business with any man. And the city was in the land of Rohob: and they rebuilt it, and dwelt therein,Non essendovi stato nissuno che la soccorresse; perchè era lungi da Sidone, e non avea società, nè commercio con altri uomini. E questa città era situata nel paese di Rohob: ed essi la riedificarono, e l'abitarono,no man at al bringing them succour, for that they dwelt farre from Sidon, and had with no men anie societie and affayres. And the citie was situated in the countrie of Rohob: which building agayne they dwelt in it,nullo penitus ferente præsidium, eo quod procul habitarent a Sidone, et cum nullo hominum haberent quidquam societatis ac negotii. Erat autem civitas sita in regione Rohob: quam rursum exstruentes habitaverunt in ea, 29Calling the name of the city Dan, after the name of their father, who was the son of Israel, which before was called Lais.Chiamando città di Dan dal nome del padre loro figliuolo d'Israele quella che prima dicevasi Lais.calling the name of the citie Dan, according to the name of their father, whom Israel had begotten, which before was called Lais.vocato nomine civitatis Dan, juxta vocabulum patris sui, quem genuerat Israël, quæ prius Lais dicebatur.

30And they set up to themselves the graven idol, and Jonathan the son of Gersam, the son of Moses, he and his sons were priests in the tribe of Dan, until the day of their captivity. And they sette vp to them selues the grauen idol, and Ionathan the sonne of Gerson the sonne of Moyses, and his sonnes priestes in the tribe of Dan, vntil the day of their captiuitie.Posueruntque sibi sculptile, et Jonathan filium Gersam filii Moysi ac filios ejus sacerdotes in tribu Dan, usque ad diem captivitatis suæ. 31And the idol of Michas remained with them all the time that the house of God was in Silo. In those days there was no king in Israel.E l'idolo di Micha rimase presso di loro per tutto il tempo in cui la casa di Dio stette in Silo: in quel tempo non v'era re in Israele. And the idol of Michas remayned with them al the time, that the house of God was in Silo. In those daies there was not a king in Israel.Mansitque apud eos idolum Michæ omni tempore quo fuit domus Dei in Silo. In diebus illis non erat rex in Israël.
