1In the mean time God said to Jacob: Arise and go up to Bethel, and dwell there, and make there an altar to God, who appeared to thee when thou didst flee from Esau, thy brother.Frattanto il Signore disse a Giacobbe: Sorgi, e va' in Bethel, e ivi fermati, e fa' un altare a Dio, il quale ti apparve allorché fuggivi Esaù tuo fratello.IN THE meane time God spake to Iacob: Arise, and goe vp to Bethel, and dwel there, and make an altar to God that appeared to thee when thou diddest flie from Esau thy brother. 2And Jacob having called together all his household, said: Cast away the strange gods that are among you, and be cleansed, and change your garments.E Giacobbe, raunata tutta la sua famiglia, disse: Gettate via gli dei stranieri, che avete tra voi, e mondatevi, e cangiate le vostre vesti. And Iacob hauing called together al his house, said: Cast away the strange goddes that are among you, and be clensed and change your garments. 3Arise, and let us go up to Bethel, that we may make there an altar to God; who heard me in the day of my affliction, and accompained me in my journey. Arise, and let vs goe vp into Bethel, that we may make there an altar vnto God: who heard me in the day of my tribulation, and accompained me in my iourney. 4So they gave him all the strange gods they had, and the earrings which were in their ears: and he buried them under the turpentine tree, that is behind the city of Sichem. They gaue to him therfore al the strange goddes that they had, and the earelets which were in their eares: but he buried them vnder the terebinth, that is behind the citie of Sichem.Dederunt ergo ei omnes deos alienos quos habebant, et inaures quæ erant in auribus eorum: at ille infodit ea subter terebinthum, quæ est post urbem Sichem. 5And when they were departed, the terror of God fell upon all the cities round about, and they durst not pursue after them as they went away.E partiti ch'ei furono, il terrore di Dio invase tutte le città all'intorno, e non ardirono d'inseguirli, mentre si ritiravano. And when they were departed, the terror of God inuaded al the cities rounde about, and they durst not pursew them going away.
6And Jacob came to Luza, which is in the land of Chanaan, surnamed Bethel: he and all the people that were with him. And Iacob came to Luza, which is in the land of Chanaan, surnamed Bethel: he and al the people that was with him.Venit igitur Jacob Luzam, quæ est in terra Chanaan, cognomento Bethel: ipse et omnis populus cum eo. 7And he built there an altar, and called the name of that place, The house of God: for there God appeared to him when he fled from his brother.E ivi edificò l'altare, e a quel luogo pose il nome di Casa di Dio: perocché ivi apparve Dio a lui, quando fuggiva il fratel suo.And he builded there an altar, and called the name of that place, The house of God: for there God appeared to him when he fled from his brother.Ædificavitque ibi altare, et appellavit nomen loci illius, Domus Dei: ibi enim apparuit ei Deus cum fugeret fratrem suum. 8At the same time Debora, the nurse of Rebecca, died, and was buried at the foot of Bethel, under an oak, and the name of that place was called, The oak of weeping. The same time died Debora the nurse of Rebecca, and was buried at the foote of Bethel vnder an oke: and the name of that place was called, The oke of weeping. 9And God appeared again to Jacob, after he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria, and he blessed him,E Dio apparve a Giacobbe la seconda volta, dopo il suo ritorno dalla Mesopotamia della Siria, e lo benedisse,And God appeared again to Iacob after he returned from Mesopotamia of Siria, and he blessed him,Apparuit autem iterum Deus Jacob postquam reversus est de Mespotamia Syriæ, benedixitque ei 10Saying: Thou shalt not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name. And he called him Israel. E chiamollo Israele.saying: Thou shalt not be called any more Iacob, but Israel shal be thy name. And he called him Israel, dicens: Non vocaberis ultra Jacob, sed Israël erit nomen tuum. Et appellavit eum Israël, 11And said to him: I am God almighty, increase thou and be multiplied. Nations and peoples of nations shall be from thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins.E soggiunsegli: Io il Dio onnipotente; cresci, moltiplica: tu sarai capo di nazioni, e di popoli, da te usciranno de' re.and said to him: I am God almightie, encrease thou and multiplie: Of thee shal be nations and peoples of nations, kinges shal come forth of thy loynes.dixitque ei: Ego Deus omnipotens: cresce, et multiplicare: gentes et populi nationum ex te erunt, reges de lumbis tuis egredientur,
12And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to thee, and to thy seed after thee.E la terra, che io diedi ad Abramo, e ad Isacco, la darò a te, e alla tua stirpe dopo di te.And the land which I gaue to Abraham and Isaac, I wil geue to thee, and to thy seede after thee.terramque quam dedi Abraham et Isaac, dabo tibi et semini tuo post te. 13And he departed from him.E partissi da lui.And he departed from him.Et recessit ab eo. 14But he set up a monument of stone, in the place where God had spoken to him: pouring drink-offerings upon it, and pouring oil thereon:Ed egli eresse un monumento di pietra nel luogo, dove Dio gli avea parlato: facendovi sopra le libagioni, e versandovi dell'olio:But he erected a title of stone, in the place where God had spoken vnto him: offering vpon it liquide offeringes, and powring oile on it:Ille vero erexit titulum lapideum in loco quo locutus fuerat ei Deus: libans super eum libamina, et effundens oleum: 15And calling the name of that place Bethel.E pose a quel luogo il nome di Bethel.and calling the name of that place, Bethel.vocansque nomen loci illius Bethel. 16And going forth from thence, he came in the spring time to the land which leadeth to Ephrata: wherein when Rachel was in travail,E partitosi di colà andò nella primavera ad un luogo sulla strada di Ephrata: dove venendo i dolori di parto a Rachele,And being gone forth from thence, he came in the spring time to the land which leadeth to Ephrata: wherin when Rachel was in trauaile,Egressus autem inde, venit verno tempore ad terram quæ ducit Ephratam: in qua cum parturiret Rachel, 17By reason of her hard labour, she began to be in danger, and the midwife said to her: Fear not, for thou shalt have this son also. E la levatrice le disse: Non temere; tu avrai ancora questo figliuolo.because of difficultie in her trauaile, she beganne to be in danger, and the midwife said vnto her: Feare not, for thou shalt haue also this a sonne.ob difficultatem partus periclitari cœpit. 18And when her soul was departing for pain, and death was now at hand, she called the name of her son Benoni, that is, the son of my pain: but his father called him Benjamin, that is, the son of the right hand.E stando ella per rendere l'anima pel dolore, e già in braccio alla morte, pose al figlio suo il nome di Benoni, cioè figliuolo del mio dolore: ma il padre chiamollo Beniamin, cioè figlio della destra. And her soule departing for paine, and death now at hand, she called the name of her sonne Benoni, that is the sonne of my paine: but his father called him Beniamin, that is the sonne of the right hand.Egrediente autem anima præ dolore, et imminente jam morte, vocavit nomen filii sui Benomi, id est, Filius doloris mei: pater vero appellavit eum Benjamin, id est, Filius dextræ.
19So Rachel died, and was buried in the highway that leadeth to Ephrata, this is Bethlehem. Rachel therfore died, and was buried in the hye way that leadeth to Ephrata, this same is Bethleem. 20And Jacob erected a pillar over her sepulchre: this is the pillar of Rachel’s monument, to this day.E Giacobbe eresse sulla sepoltura di lei un monumento: Questo è il monumento di Rachele fino al dì d'oggi. And Iacob erected a title ouer her sepulchre: This is the litle of Rachels monument, vntil this present day.Erexitque Jacob titulum super sepulchrum ejus: hic est titulus monumenti Rachel, usque in præsentem diem. 21Departing thence, he pitched his tent beyond the Flock tower. Departing thence, he pitched his tent beyond the Flocke tower.Egressus inde, fixit tabernaculum trans Turrem gregis. 22And when he dwelt in that country, Ruben went, and slept with Bala the concubine of his father: which he was not ignorant of. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.E mentre egli si stava in quel paese, Ruben andò, e dormì con Bala concubina di suo padre: e questi non lo ignorò. Or dodici erano i figliuoli di Giacobbe. And when he dwelt in that countrie: Ruben went, and slept with Bala his fathers concubine: which thing he was not ignorant of. And the sonnes of Iacob were twelue. 23The sons of Lia: Ruben the first born, and Simeon, and Levi, and Juda, and Issachar, and Zabulon.Figliuoli di Lia: primogenito Ruben, e Simeon, e Levi, e Giuda, e Issachar, e Zabulon. The sonnes of Lia: Ruben the first begotten, and Simeon, and Leui, and Iudas, and Issachar, and Zabulon.Filii Liæ: primogenitus Ruben, et Simeon, et Levi, et Judas, et Issachar, et Zabulon. 24The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.Figliuoli di Rachele: Giuseppe e Beniamin. The sonnes of Rachel: Ioseph and Beniamin.Filii Rachel: Joseph et Benjamin. 25The sons of Bala, Rachel’s handmaid: Dan and Nephthali.Figliuoli di Bala, schiava di Rachele: Dan, e Nephtali. The sonnes of Bala Rachels handmaid: Dan and Nepthali.Filii Balæ ancillæ Rachelis: Dan et Nephthali. 26The sons of Zelpha, Lia’s handmaid: Gad and Aser: these are the sons of Jacob, that were born to him in Mesopotamia of Syria. The sonnes of Zelpha Lias handmaid: Gad and Aser: these are the sonnes of Iacob, that were borne to him in Mesopotamia of Siria.
27And he came to Isaac his father in Mambre, the city of Arbee, this is Hebron: wherein Abraham and Isaac sojourned. He came also to Isaac his father in Mambre, the citie of Arbee, this is Hebron: wherin Abraham and Isaac soiourned. 28And the days of Isaac were a hundred and eighty years.E tutti i giorni d'Isacco furono cento ottanta anni. And the dayes of Isaac were complete an hundred eyghtie yeares. 29And being spent with age he died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.E consumato d'età si morì, e vecchio, e pieno di giorni si riunì al suo popolo: e Giacobbe ed Esaù suoi figliuoli lo seppellirono. And spent With age he died, and was put to his people, being old and ful of dayes: and Esau and Iacob his sonnes buryed him.

The turpentine tree; or "an oak tree," as the Hebrew haela means also. Jacob buried them privately. (Calmet) See Deuteronomy 7:5.

Spring. Hebrew, cibrath. Septuagint leave it untranslated, Chalratha, though they render it horse-race, (Ver. 19.) and join both together, Genesis 48:7. The word occurs again, 4 Kings 5:19; and St. Jerome translates it the spring, or the finest time of the earth. Others suppose it signifies the high road, (Ver. 19.) or horse-course, or a mile, etc. as if the place, where Rachel died, and not the season of the year, were designated. Calmet concludes, she died about the distance of an acre (sillon, furrow or ridge) from Ephrata. But there seems to be no reason why we should recede from the Vulgate. (Haydock)

10. Called him Israel.] As the Patriarch now performeth his vow to God: The name ISRAEL signifieth special prerogatiues in the Patriarch Iacob. so God fulfilleth his promise, geuing him a new name. For Iacob a supplanter, signifying too smal force & praise for such a champion, God therfore honored him with the name of Israel. That is, One that seeth and contemplateth God, as most ancient writers expound it. Also A prince, or valient vvith God, as S. Hierom sheweth Tradit. Heb. For Isra in Hebrew signifieth To dominier, or rule ouer, and El signifieth God. And so this name geuen to him testifieth that he, by Gods gift and grace, was valient euen against an Angel representing God, much more against men, and other aduersaries. Others interprete it, The right one of God. as witnesseth the same S. Hierom both here, and in his commentaries in 44. Isaie. Al do importe a great excellencie in this Patriarch. And the successe of things confirmeth the same.
Induite saccum, sive cilicium in signum paenitentiae.
35:3
3. Socius fuit itineris mei, — duxque comesque viae: dux in itu in Haran, redux in reditu in Chanaan.
35:4
INFODIT. — Prius confracta, vel liquefacta, prout fecit Moses, Exodi xxxii, 20, et Ezechias IV Reg. xviii, 4. Potuisset Jacob materiam, puta aurum, argentum, aes in usum alium, etiam sacrum (licet id neget Abulensis) convertere; sed noluit, ne quod superesset vestigium idololatriae, utque suis ejus execrationem ingeneraret, discerentque omnes idola abominari, quasi anathemata.
Subter terebinthum. — Hebraeum ela, et quercum et terebinthum significat. Andreas Masius in Josue cap. ult., vers. 26.
4. INAURES, — quibus idola, instar hominum, in auribus ornabantur. Unde secundo, Augustinus vocat eas phylacteria deorum. Idem docet S. Chrysostomus, hom. 35 in Gen., Lyranus et utraque Glossa. Paulo aliter Gaspar Sanchez in Isaiae cap. xliv, num. »
35:5
5. Terror Dei invasit omnes. Vide, ait S. Chrysostomus, quid mereatur timor Isaac et Jacob, quo ipse timuit Deum, scilicet ut vicissim Deus faciat eum omnibus terribilem. « Nam quando Deus nobis bene voluerit, e medio tolluntur terribilia omnia.
35:6
6. Omnis populus, — ampla et populosa ejus familia.
35:7
7. APPELLAVIT NOMEN LOCI ILLIUS, DOMUS DEI. Vide dicta cap. xxviii, vers. 19.
35:8
8. Debora.
— Bethel ergo in monte erat sita.
Quercus fletus, — quia Jacob cum suis ibi planxit mortem Deborae.
35:9
9. APPARUIT AUTEM ITERUM DEUS JACOB. — Paulo ante apparuerat ei, jubens eum pergere in Bethel, nunc cum in Bethel pervenit, ibi eidem rursus apparet. Ita Septuaginta. « Haec est tertia apparitio, inquit Hugo Cardinalis, qua Dominus apparuit Jacob. Primo enim apparuit fugienti Esau, innixus scalae. Secundo, redeunti de Mesopotamia in lucta. Tertio, hic in Bethel. In quo significatur triplex apparitio Christi. »
Benedixitque ei, — vocando eum Israel, nova promissa, novos animos, novum robur, nova gratiae dona ei indendo.
35:10
10. NON VOCABERIS ULTRA JACOB, SED ISRAEL. — Quaeres, cur hic nomen Israel iterato inditur Jacobo?
» Vere ergo dicere potuit Jacob: « Secundum multitudinem dolorum meorum, consolationes tuae laetificaverunt animam meam.
Ecce audivimus eam in Ephrata, invenimus eam in campis silvae, haec requies mea, quia Domini patria est: hic habitabo, quoniam Salvator elegit eam. »
35:20
20. EREXITQUE JACOB TITULUM. — Brochardus tradit titulum hunc, sive monumentum Rachelis, fuisse pyramidem perelegantem, in cujus basi dispositi erant duodecim lapides praegrandes, juxta numerum duodecim filiorum Israel.
8, vocetur turris gregis. Unde S. Hieronymus, Tostatus, Adrichomius et alii putant, juxta hanc turrim apparuisse angelum pastoribus, vigilantibus super gregem suum, eisque nuntiasse ortum Christi. Hinc et S. Helena, mater Constantini Magni, apud hanc turrim insigne extruxit templum, sub nomine SS. Angelorum.
35:22
22. Ruben dormivit cum Bala. — Hinc pater Jacob spoliavit Ruben sua primogenitura, eique moriens maledixit, Genes. xlix, 4. 19.
35:26
Jacob fugiens Esau ivit in Mesopotamiam, anno aetatis suae 77. Haesit ibi 20 annis; inde rediit in Chanaan anno aetatis 97.
Moriente ergo Isaaco, anno aetatis suae 180, Joseph in Aegypto agebat annum servitutis 13, aetatis 29, qui fuit annus a diluvio 527, a creatione mundi 2228. Est ergo hic hysterologia: nam praeponitur hic mors Isaaci, quae ordine temporis ponenda fuisset post venditionem Josephi, sub finem cap. XL Genes. Ita Abulensis, Pererius et alii.
Vers. 28. COMPLETI SUNT DIES ISAAC CENTUM OCTOGINTA ANNORUM.
35:29
Vers. 29. Vide dicta cap. XXV, vers. 8.
Hier.), alia, « et mundamini ac mutate vestimenta vestra ». 42337 "now i. e. dii (terrae) alienae, uti 3231 n Gen. 17, 12. Assumuntur vestes aliae, mundae, lecliores : « Vestium nitore puritatem declarate » (Chrys.).
35:3
qui ezaudivit. me in. die tribulationis meae, et socius futt ttineris mei ». Cf. 28,15 sqq.
35:4
35:7
v. 7 « Aedi?ficavitque tbi al- (rare et appellavit nomen loci illius Domus Dei », seu verius El Bethel. 18,19 appellavit locum universim Bethel, nunc locum altaris vocat El Bethel : altare nomine aliquo divino appellatur, quo sc. nomine Deus ad illud altare esset invocandus.
35:9
35:10
v. 10 « Dicens : Non vocaberis ultra lacob », — Hebr. anacolutho sententiam orditur : Nomen tuum lacob , non vocabitur ultra nomen tuum lacob — « sed Israel erit nomen tuum ». Censebat Hzer. cap. 32 nomen imponendum praedici, hic tandem imponi. At cum verba utrobique sint plane eadem, interpretes post Rup. censent, nomen prius impositum h. l. « repetitione confirmari »; et rationem affert Bon/fr., animum fuisse addendum lacobo, uti prius propter timorem Esau, ita nunc propter timorem Chananaeorum. « Et appellavit eum Israel »,
35:11
v. 11 « dixitque ei : Ego Deus omnipotens » , € bx; verbis iisdem 17,1 Deus alloquebatur Abraham.
In sequente narratione semper nomen /acob scribitur, exceptis textibus his, qui nomen Zsrael habent : 35, 21. 22 (bis); 37, 3, 13; 43, 6. 8. 11; 45, 98; 46, 1. 2. 30; 47, 29. 31; 48, 2. 8. 1O (bis). 13. 21; 49, 24; 50, 2. Hinc fratrum in Iosephum invidia. Adverte porro, Generationes lacob cap. Diu post, quando decem tribus duce tribu Ioseph sceptro Iuda se subduxere, vocaverunt regnum suum regnum Zsrael.
35:14
v. 18 « Ille vero erexit titulum lapideum in loco, quo locutus fuerat ei Deus, libans super eum libamina et effundens oleum »,
35:15
v. 15 « vocansque nomen loci illius Bethel ». llla [;bamina interpretatur Ps.
35:18
v. 18 « Egrediente autem anima [prae dolore et] imminente iam morte , vocavit nomen filii sut Benoni, [1. e. Filius doloris mei]; pater vero appellavit eum Beniamin, [1. e. Filius dezterae| », aut eo ipso tempore, aut post mortuam coniugem. Nomina vere explicat Vulg. : mater doloribus oppressa vocavit filium doloris exitialis causam et fructum; pater in summo dolore nativitate filii ad spem erectus, vocavit filium dexterae seu, quod dexterum apud orientales idem sonaret quod faustum, filium felicitatis efficiendae causam. Quem sensum ipsa nominum oppositio inculcat : stulte, neglecto dilectae uxoris exitiali dolore, vocasset natum Iacob « filium meridiei » (De/.).

v. 20 « Erezitque lacob titulum super sepulcrum eius : hic est titulus monumenti Rachel usque in praesentem diem ». v. 91 « Egressus inde » Israel, « fixit tabernaculum trans Turrem gregis » , Turrem Eder secus ignotam, ad quam alludi Mich. 4,8 gratuito affirmant aliqui. LXX versum transferunt in locum
35:21
v. 16 ita : Egressus inde , fixit tabernaculum trans Turrem Eder. Et factum est, quando appropinquabat... Ephratham etc. Obest primum ratio critica, dein contextus.
35:22
v. 22 « Cumque habitaret » Israel « in illa regione , abiit Ruben et dormivit cum Bala concubina patris sui, quod illum » Israel « minime latuit ». Antequam lacobi ad patrem reditus narretur, brevis subnectitur filiorum elenchus, ubi vox Rubeno affixa primogenitus quodammodo supplet ei, quam aliqui notavere, v. 22 abruptae brevitati (Hebr. : et audivit Israel) : divinat lector, eum filium iure primogeniturae fore privandum, qui patris torum maculaverit. « Erant autem filii Iacob duodecim ». Producuntur iam cum suis quaeque filiis uxores, eo ordine quo Iacobo nupserunt.

BETHEL (EBR. BĚTH-'ĚL = « CASA DI DIO »)
