The tribe of Benjamin is saved from being utterly extinct, by providing wives for the six hundred that remained.

1Now the children of Israel had also sworn in Maspha, saying: None of us shall give of his daughters to the children of Benjamin to wife.Giurarono eziandio i figliuoli d'Israele in Maspha, e dissero: Nissuno di noi darà veruna delle nostre figliuole per moglie a' figliuoli di Beniamin.THE children of Israel sware also in Maspha, and said: None of vs shal geue of his daughters to the children of Beniamin to wife.Juraverunt quoque filii Israël in Maspha, et dixerunt: Nullus nostrum dabit filiis Benjamin de filiabus suis uxorem. 2And they all came to the house of God in Silo, and sitting before him till the evening, lifted up their voices, and began to lament and weep, saying:E andaron tutti alla casa di Dio in Silo, e assisi al cospetto di lui fino alla sera, alzarono le loro voci, e principiarono a dar grandi urla, e a piagnere dicendo. And they came al to the house of God in Silo, and sitting in his sight vntil euening, lifted vp their voice, and with great wayling beganne to weepe saying:Veneruntque omnes ad domum Dei in Silo, et in conspectu ejus sedentes usque ad vesperam, levaverunt vocem, et magno ululatu cœperunt flere, dicentes: 3O Lord God of Israel, why is so great an evil come to pass in thy people, that this day one tribe should be taken away from among us?Perchè mai, o Signore Dio d'Israele, è avvenuto male sì grande al tuo popolo, che oggi una delle nostre tribù ci sia stata tolta?Wherfore ô Lord God of Israel is this euil done in thy people, that this day one tribe should be taken away out of vs?Quare, Domine Deus Israël, factum est hoc malum in populo tuo, ut hodie una tribus auferretur ex nobis ? 4And rising early the next day, they built an altar: and offered there holocausts, and victims of peace, and they said:E il giorno seguente, alzatisi alla punta del dì, eressero un altare, e ivi offersero olocausti, e vittime pacifiche, e dissero:And on the morrow rising early, they built an altar: and offered there holocaustes, and pacifique victimes, and said: Who hath not ascended in the hoste of our LordAltera autem die diluculo consurgentes, exstruxerunt altare: obtuleruntque ibi holocausta, et pacificas victimas, et dixerunt: 5Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the army of the Lord? for they had bound themselves with a great oath, when they were in Maspha, that whosoever were wanting should be slain. For they had bound them selues with a great othe, when they were in Maspha, that they should be slayne which had beene wanting.

6And the children of Israel being moved with repentance for their brother Benjamin, began to say: One tribe is taken away from Israel.E pentiti i figliuoli d'Israele di quelli che avean fatto a Beniamin loro fratello, cominciarono a dire: Una tribù è stata tolta da Israele. And the children of Israel being moued with repentance vpon their brother Beniamin, beganne to say: One tribe is taken away out of Israel,Ductique pœnitentia filii Israël super fratre suo Benjamin, cœperunt dicere: Ablata est tribus una de Israël: 7Whence shall they take wives? For we have all in general sworn, not to give our daughters to them.Donde ponderann'eglino delle mogli? Imperocché tutti d'accordo abbiam giurato di non dare ad essi le nostre figliuole.whence shal they take wiues? For we haue al sworne in common, that we wil not geue our daughters to them.unde uxores accipient ? omnes enim in commune juravimus, non daturos nos his filias nostras. 8Therefore they said: Who is there of all the tribes of Israel, that came not up to the Lord to Maspha? And, behold, the inhabitants of Jabes Galaad were found not to have been in that army. Therfore they said: Who is there of al the tribes of Israel, that went not vp to our Lord into Maspha? And behold the inhabitantes of Iabes Galaad were found not to haue bene in that armie. 9(At that time also when they were in Silo, no one of them was found there,)E anche in quel tempo che gl'Israeliti erano a Silo, non vi si trovò alcun di loro.At that time also when they were in Silo, none of them was found there.)(Eo quoque tempore cum essent in Silo, nullus ex eis ibi repertus est.) 10So they sent ten thousand of the most valiant men, and commanded them, saying: Go and put the inhabitants of Jabes Galaad to the sword, with their wives and their children. They sent therfore ten thousand the strongest men, and commanded them: Goe, and strike the inhabitantes of Iabes Galaad in the edge of the sword, as wel their wiues as their litle ones.Miserunt itaque decem millia viros robustissimos, et præceperunt eis: Ite, et percutite habitatores Jabes Galaad in ore gladii, tam uxores quam parvulos eorum.

11And this is what you shall observe: Every male, and all women that have known men, you shall kill, but the virgins you shall save.E abbiate attenzione a questo: che uccidendo tutti i maschi e le donne maritate, salverete le vergini. And this shal be it which you shal obserue: Al of the male kinde, and wemen, that haue knowen men, kil ye, but the virgins reserue. 12And there were found of Jabes Galaad four hundred virgins, that had not known the bed of a man, and they brought them to the camp in Silo, into the land of Chanaan.E si contarono in Jabes Galaad quattrocento vergini, che non avean conosciuto uomo, e quelli le condussero al campo in Silo nella terra di Chanaan. And there were found of Iabes Galaad foure hundred virgins, that knew not mans bedde, and they brought them to the campe in Silo, into the Land of Chanaan. 13And they sent messengers to the children of Benjamin, that were in the rock Remmon, and commanded them to receive them in peace.E spedirono ambasciadori a' figliuoli di Beniamin, ch'erano sul masso di Remmon, e dieder loro commissione di dare a quelli la pace. And they sent messengers to the children of Beniamin, that were in Rocke Remmon, and commanded them that they should receiue them in peace. 14And the children of Benjamin came at that time, and wives were given them of the daughters of Jabes Galaad: but they found no others, whom they might give in like manner.E i figliuoli di Beniamin allora andarono, e furon date loro per mogli le fanciulle di Jabes Galaad; ma non ne trovarono altre da poter dar loro allo stesso modo. And the children of Beniamin came at that time, and there were geuen vnto them wiues of the daughters of Iabes Galaad: but others they found not, which they might geue them in like maner. 15And all Israel was very sorry, and repented for the destroying of one tribe out of Israel.E tutto Israele ebbe dolore, e fece penitenza per la strage di una tribù d'Israele. And al Israel was very sorie, and repented for the killing of one tribe out of Israel.

16And the ancients said: What shall we do with the rest, that have not received wives? for all the women in Benjamin are dead.E i seniori dissero: Che farem noi per gli altri che non hanno avute le mogli? Tutte le femmine di Beniamin sono state uccise:And the ancientes said: What shal we doe to the rest, that haue not taken wiues? For al the wemen in Beniamin are dead.Dixeruntque majores natu: Quid faciemus reliquis, qui non acceperunt uxores ? omnes in Benjamin feminæ conciderunt, 17And we must use all care, and provide with great diligence, that one tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.E con gran cura e sollecitudine dobbiam provvedere, che non perisca una tribù d'Israele. And we must very carefully, and with great studie prouide, that one tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.et magna nobis cura, ingentique studio providendum est, ne una tribus deleatur ex Israël. 18For as to our own daughters we cannot give them, being bound with an oath and a curse, whereby we said: Cursed be he that shall give Benjamin any of his daughters to wife. For our owne daughters we can not geue them, being bound with an oath and a curse, wherby we said: Cursed be he that shal geue to Beniamin anie of his daughters to wife. 19So they took counsel, and said: Behold, there is a yearly solemnity of the Lord in Silo, which is situate on the north of the city of Bethel, and on the east side of the way, that goeth from Bethel to Sichem, and on the south of the town of Lebona.E preser questo partito, e dissero: Ecco viene la solennità anniversaria del Signore in Silo, la quale è posta a settentrione della città di Bethel, e all'oriente della strada, che mena da Bethel a Sichem, e a mezzodì della città di Lebona. And they tooke counsail, and said: Behold there is an anniuersaire solemnitie of our Lord in Silo, which is situate on the North of the citie of Bethel, on the East side of the way, that goeth from Bethel to Sichem, and on the South of the towne of Lebona. 20And they commanded the children of Benjamin and said: Go, and lie hid in the vineyards,Dissero adunque a' figliuoli di Beniamin: Andate a nascondervi nelle vigne. And they commanded the children of Beniamin, and said: Goe, and lie hidde in the vineyardes. 21And when you shall see the daughters of Silo come out, as the custom is, to dance, come ye on a sudden out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife among them, and go into the land of Benjamin.E quando vedrete le fanciulle di Silo, che usciranno fuora per ballare secondo il costume, voi a un tratto saltate fuora delle vigne, e prendetene una per uno in moglie, e andatevene nella terra di Beniamin. And when you shal see the daughters of Silo come forth after the maner to lead daunses, issue forth sodenly out of the vineyardes, and catch of them euerie one his wife, and goe into the Land of Beniamin.

22And when their fathers and their brethren shall come, and shall begin to complain against you, and to chide, we will say to them: Have pity on them: for they took them not away as by the right of war or conquest, but when they asked to have them, you gave them not, and the fault was committed on your part.E quando verranno i padri loro, e i fratelli a lamentarsi di voi, e menar rumore, noi direm loro: Abbiate compassione di essi; perocché non le hanno rapite per diritto di guerra, nè come vincitori: ma avendole domandate le avete ad essi negate, ed è vostra la colpa. And when their fathers shal come, and their brethren, and shal beginne to complaine against you, and to chide, we wil say to them: Haue pittie on them: for they tooke them not away by the right of warryers and conquerours, but when they desired to receiue them, you gaue them not, and on your part the fault was committed. 23And the children of Benjamin did as they had been commanded: and, according to their number, they carried off for themselves every man his wife of them that were dancing: and they went into their possession, and built up their cities, and dwelt in them.E i figliuoli di Beniamin fecero come era stato lor comandato: e secondo il loro numero rapirono delle fanciulle che ballavano una per ciascheduno: e se n'andarono al loro paese, e riedificaron le città, e le abitarono. And the children of Beniamin did, as it had beene commanded them: and according to their number, they tooke away to them selues of those that ledde the daunses, euerie one his wife: and they went into their possession, building cities, and dwelling in them.Feceruntque filii Benjamin ut sibi fuerat imperatum: et juxta numerum suum, rapuerunt sibi de his quæ ducebant choros, uxores singulas: abieruntque in possessionem suam ædificantes urbes, et habitantes in eis. 24The children of Israel also returned by their tribes, and families, to their dwellings. In those days there was no king in Israel: but every one did that which seemed right to himself. The children of Israel also returned by their tribes, and families into their tabernacles. In those daies there was not a King in Israel: but euerie one did that which semed right to him selfe.
