UNIONE INTERNAZIONALE PER LA PROTEZIONE DELLA PUBBLICA MORALITÀ (U.I.M.P.). — A non-denominational and non-political organization, established in Paris on 27 May 1951 with the support of 90 organizations from various countries (today approximately 100), whose aim is to coordinate initiatives arising in different countries to ensure respect for public morality and to combat attacks on public decency.
The U.I.M.P.’s means of action are: 1) to collect and disseminate information on laws, regulations, and measures adopted against offenses against public morality in various countries; 2) to intervene with the United Nations, specialized institutions, and non-governmental organizations; 3) to study the factors that lead the public to seek publications, performances, and other forms of entertainment contrary to public decency, as well as the means of remedying their harmful effects. It is based in Paris and is governed by a Bureau, consisting of a president, a vice-president, a treasurer, and a secretary-general, and by an International Comité, in which the following are represented: Argentina, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Japan, England, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the United States of America, and Switzerland. It operates in the various countries through Comitati d'intesa, which bring together locally the various organizations affiliated with the U.I.M.P.
Corresponding to this Association, but on a national level, there exists in Italy, based in Rome and established as a juridical entity, an Associazione nazionale per il buon costume, founded in 1946 by Prof. Carlo Costantini (1870–1952).
