INTERNATIONAL UNION FOR THE PROTECTION OF PUBLIC MORALITY (U.I.M.P.): - A confessional and apolitical organization aiming to coordinate initiatives arising in various countries to ensure respect for public morality and to combat attacks on decency, founded in Paris on 27 May 1951, with the participation of 90 organizations from different countries (now approx. 100).
The means of action of the U.I.M.P. are: 1) to gather and disseminate information on laws, regulations, and measures taken against offenses to public morality in various countries; 2) to intervene with the United Nations, specialized agencies, and non-governmental organizations; 3) to study the factors that drive the public to seek publications, shows, and other manifestations contrary to decency and the means to remedy their harmful effects. It has its headquarters in Paris and is governed by a Bureau, composed of a president, a vice-president, a treasurer, and a secretary-general, and an International Committee, in which the following are represented: Argentina, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Japan, England, Italy, Holland, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the United States of America, and Switzerland. It operates in various countries through Liaison Committees, which reach 100% of the various organizations adhering to the U.I.M.P.
In accordance with this Association, but on a national level, there exists in Italy, with its headquarters in Rome and established as a moral entity, a National Association for Decency, founded in 1946 by Prof. Carlo Costantini (1870-1952).
