The apostle’s preaching was approved of by the other apostles. The Gentiles were not to be constrained to the observance of the law.

1Then, after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus also with me.Quindi quattordici anni dopo, andai di nuovo a Gerusalemme con Barnaba, preso meco anche Tito.THEN after fourtene yeres I vvent vp againe to Hierusalem vvith Barnabas, taking Titus also vvith me.Deinde post annos quatuordecim, iterum ascendi Jerosolymam cum Barnaba, assumpto et Tito. 2And I went up according to revelation and communicated to them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles: but apart to them who seemed to be some thing: lest perhaps I should run or had run in vain.E vi andai per rivelazione: e conferii con quegli il vangelo, che io predico tra le nazioni, e distintamente con quegli, che erano in grande autorità: affinchè io non corressi, od avessi corso senza frutto. And I vvent vp according to reuelation: and cōferred with them the Gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but apart with thē that seemed to be something, lest perhaps in vaine I should runne or had runne. 3But neither Titus, who was with me, being a Gentile, was compelled to be circumcised.Ma nemmen Tito, che era meco, essendo gentile, fu astretto a circoncidersi; But neither Titus which vvas with me, vvhereas he vvas a Gentil, vvas compelled to be circumcised:Sed neque Titus, qui mecum erat, cum esset gentilis, compulsus est circumcidi: 4But because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privately to spy our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into servitude.Cioè a dire per riguardo di que' falsi fratelli, i quali si erano furtivamente intrusi ad esplorare la nostra libertà, che abbiamo di Cristo Gesù, per ridurci in servitù.but because of the false brethren craftely brought in, vvhich craftely came in to espie our libertie that vve haue in Christ IESVS, that they might bring vs into seruitude.sed propter subintroductos falsos fratres, qui subintroierunt explorare libertatem nostram, quam habemus in Christo Jesu, ut nos in servitutem redigerent. 5To whom we yielded not by subjection: no, not for an hour: that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.A' quali non cedemmo neppure per un momento con assoggettarci, affinchè rimanesse presso di voi la verità del vangelo:To vvhom vve yelded not subiection no not for an houre, that the truth of the Gospel may remaine vvith you.

6But of them who seemed to be some thing, (what they were some time it is nothing to me, God accepteth not the person of man): for to me they that seemed to be some thing added nothing.Ma nissuna differenza vi è da me a quegli, che avevano grande autorità (checché siano eglino stati: Iddio non bada all'esteriore dell'uomo), imperocché nulla a me contribuiron del loro quegli, che avevano grande autorità.But of them that seemed to be something, (vvhat they vvere sometime, it is nothing to me. God accepteth not the person of man) for to me, they that seemed to be something, added nothing.ab iis autem, qui videbantur esse aliquid (quales aliquando fuerint, nihil mea interest: Deus personam hominis non accipit): mihi enim qui videbantur esse aliquid, nihil contulerunt. 7But contrariwise, when they had seen that to me was committed the gospel of the uncircumcision, as to Peter was that of the circumcision.Ma per lo contrario avendo veduto, come a me era stato affidato il vangelo per i non circoncisi, come a Pietro per li circoncisi; But contrarievvise vvhen they had seen, that to me vvas committed the Gospel of the prepuce, as to Peter of the circumcision (Sed e contra cum vidissent quod creditum est mihi Evangelium præputii, sicut et Petro circumcisionis 8(For he who wrought in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision wrought in me also among the Gentiles.)(Imperocché chi diè potere a Pietro per l'apostolato de' circoncisi, lo ha dato anche a me trai gentili.)for he that vvrought in Peter to the Apostleship of the circumcision, vvrought in me also among the Gentils)(qui enim operatus est Petro in apostolatum circumcisionis, operatus est et mihi inter gentes): 9And when they had known the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship: that we should go unto the Gentiles, and they unto the circumcision:E avendo riconosciuto la grazia conceduta a me, Giacomo, e Cefa, Giovanni, che erano riputati le colonne, porsero le destre di confederazione a me, a Barnaba: onde noi trai gentili, ed eglino trai circoncisi:and vvhen they had knovven the grace that vvas giuen me, Iames and Cephas and Iohn, vvhich seemed to be pillers, gaue to me and Barnabas the right handes of societie: that vve vnto the Gentiles, & they vnto the circumcision:et cum cognovissent gratiam, quæ data est mihi, Jacobus, et Cephas, et Joannes, qui videbantur columnæ esse, dextras dederunt mihi, et Barnabæ societatis: ut nos in gentes, ipsi autem in circumcisionem:

10Only that we should be mindful of the poor: which same thing also I was careful to do.Solamente che ci ricordassimo de' poveri: la qual cosa eziandio fui sollecito ad eseguire.only that vve should be mindeful of the poore: the vvhich same thing also I vvas careful to doe.tantum ut pauperum memores essemus, quod etiam sollicitus fui hoc ipsum facere. 11But when Cephas was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. And vvhen Cephas vvas come to Antioche, I resisted him in face, because he vvas reprehensible. 12For before that some came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them who were of the circumcision. For before that certaine came from Iames, he did eate vvith the Gentiles: but vvhen they vvere come, he vvithdrevv and separated him self, fearing them that vvere of the circumcision. 13And to his dissimulation the rest of the Jews consented: so that Barnabas also was led by them into that dissimulation.E alla simulazione di lui si accordarono gli altri Giudei, di modo che anche Barnaba fu indotto da loro alla stessa simulazione. And to his simulation cōsented the rest of the Ievves, so that Barnabas also vvas ledde of them into that simulation. 14But when I saw that they walked not uprightly unto the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all: If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of the Gentiles and not as the Jews do, how dost thou compel the Gentiles to live as do the Jews? But vvhen I savv that they vvalked not rightly to the veritie of the Gospel, I said to Cephas before them al: If thou being a Ievve, liuest Gentile-like & not Iudaically: hovv doest thou compel the Gentils to Iudaize.

15We by nature are Jews: and not of the Gentiles, sinners.Noi per natura Giudei, e non Gentili peccatori,Vve are by nature Ievves, and not of the Gentils, sinners. 16But knowing that man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, we also believe in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by the faith of Christ and not by the works of the law: because by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. But knovving that man is not iustified by the vvorkes of the Lavv, but by the faith of IESVS Christ: we also beleeue in Christ IESVS, that we may be iustified by the faith of Christ, and not by the vvorkes of the Lavv: for the vvhich cause, by the workes of the Law no flesh shal be iustified. 17But if, while we seek to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ then the minister of sin? God forbid! Mai no.But if seeking to be iustified in Christ, our selues also be found sinners: is Christ then a minister of sinne? God forbid. Absit. 18For if I build up again the things which I have destroyed, I make myself a prevaricator. For if I build the same things againe vvhich I haue destroied, I make my self a preuaricatour.Si enim quæ destruxi, iterum hæc ædifico: prævaricatorem me constituo. 19For I, through the law, am dead to the law, that I may live to God; with Christ I am nailed to the cross. For I by the Lavv, am dead to the Law, that I may liue to God: vvith Christ I am nailed to the crosse.

20And I live, now not I: but Christ liveth in me. And that I live now in the flesh: I live in the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and delivered himself for me.E vivo non già io, ma vive in me Cristo, e la vita, ond'io vivo adesso nella carne la vivo nella fede del figliuolo di Dio, il quale mi amò, e diede se stesso per me.And I liue, novv not I: but Christ liueth in me. And that that I liue novv in the flesh, I liue in the faith of the sonne of God, who loued me, & deliuered him self for me.Vivo autem, jam non ego: vivit vero in me Christus. Quod autem nunc vivo in carne: in fide vivo Filii Dei, qui dilexit me, et tradidit semetipsum pro me. 21I cast not away the grace of God. For if justice be by the law, then Christ died in vain.Non disprezzo la grazia di Dio. Imperocché se la giustizia è dalla legge, dunque invano Cristo morì.I cast not avvay the grace of God. For if iustice be by the Lavv, then Christ died in vaine.
