Because of the insufficiency of the sacrifices of the law, Christ our high priest shed his own blood for us, offering up once for all the sacrifice of our redemption. He exhorts them to perseverance.

1For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, not the very image of the things, by the selfsame sacrifices which they offer continually every year, can never make the comers thereunto perfect.Imperocché la legge avente l'ombra de' beni futuri, non la stessa espressa immagine delle cose, con quel le ostie, che continuamente offeriscono ogn'anno, non può mai rendere perfetti color, che sagrificano:FOR the lavv hauing a shadovv of good things to come, not the very image of the things: euery yere vvith the self same hostes which they offer incessantly, can neuer make the commers thereto perfect:Umbram enim habens lex futurorum bonorum, non ipsam imaginem rerum: per singulos annos, eisdem ipsis hostiis quas offerunt indesinenter, numquam potest accedentes perfectos facere: 2For then they would have ceased to be offered: because the worshippers once cleansed should have no conscience of sin any longer.Altrimenti si sarebbe cessato di offerirle; dappoiché purificati una volta i sagrificatori, non sarebber più consapevoli a loro stessi di peccato:othervvise they should haue ceased to be offered, because the vvorshippers once cleansed should haue no conscience of sinne any longer.alioquin cessassent offerri: ideo quod nullam haberent ultra conscientiam peccati, cultores semel mundati: 3But in them there is made a commemoration of sins every year:Ma io queste (ostie) si fa commemorazione ogni anno de' peccati:but in them there is made a cōmemotation of sinne euery yere.sed in ipsis commemoratio peccatorum per singulos annos fit. 4For it is impossible that with the blood of oxen and goats sin should be taken away.Impossibile essendo, che col sangue de' tori, e de' capri tolgansi i peccati.for it is impossible that vvith the bloud of oxen and goates sinnes should be taken avvay. 5Wherefore, when he cometh into the world he saith: Sacrifice and oblation thou wouldest not: but a body thou hast fitted to me.Per la qual cosa entrando nel mondo, dice: non hai voluto ostia, né oblazione: ma a me hai formato un corpo:Therfore comming into the vvorld he saith: Host and oblation thou vvouldest not: but a body thou hast fitted to me:Ideo ingrediens mundum dicit: Hostiam et oblationem noluisti: corpus autem aptasti mihi: 6Holocausts for sin did not please thee. Holocaustes and for sinne did not please thee.holocautomata pro peccato non tibi placuerunt. 7Then said I: Behold I come: in the head of the book it is written of me: that I should do thy will, O God.Allora io dissi: ecco ch'io vengo nella testata del libro è stato scritto di me) per fare, o Dio, la tua volontà.Then said I Behold I come: in the head of the booke it is vvritten of me: That I may doe thy vvil ô God.Tunc dixi: Ecce venio: in capite libri scriptum est de me: Ut faciam, Deus, voluntatem tuam.

8In saying before, Sacrifices, and oblations, and holocausts for sin thou wouldest not, neither are they pleasing to thee, which are offered according to the law.Avendo detto di sopra: le ostie, le obblazioni, e gli olocausti pel peccato non gli hai voluti, né sono a te piaciuti, le quali cose secondo la legge si offeriscono:Saying before, Because hostes and oblations, & holocaustes, & for sinne thou vvouldest not, neither did they please thee, vvhich are offered according to the lavv,Superius dicens: Quia hostias, et oblationes, et holocautomata pro peccato noluisti, nec placita sunt tibi, quæ secundum legem offeruntur, 9Then said I: Behold, I come to do thy will, O God: He taketh away the first, that he may establish that which followeth.Allora dissi: ecco, che io vengo per fare, o Dio, la tua volontà: toglie il primo, per istabilire il secondo.then said I, Behold I come that I may doe thy vvil ô God: he taketh avvay the first, that he may establish that that folovveth.tunc dixi: Ecce venio, ut faciam, Deus, voluntatem tuam: aufert primum, ut sequens statuat. 10In the which will, we are sanctified by the oblation of the body of Jesus Christ once.E per questa volontà siamo stati santificati mediante l'obblazione del corpo di Gesù Cristo (fatta) una volta. In the vvhich vvil, vve are sanctified by the oblation of the body of IESVS Christ once.In qua voluntate sanctificati sumus per oblationem corporis Jesu Christi semel. 11And every priest indeed standeth daily ministering and often offering the same sacrifices which can never take away sins.E ogni sacerdote sta pronto tuttodì al ministero, e offerendo sovente le stesse ostie le quale non possono mai togliere i peccati:And euery priest in deede is ready daily ministring, and often offering the same hostes, vvhich can neuer take avvay sinnes:Et omnis quidem sacerdos præsto est quotidie ministrans, et easdem sæpe offerens hostias, quæ numquam possunt auferre peccata: 12But this man, offering one sacrifice for sins, for ever sitteth on the right hand of God,Ma questi, offerta per sempre una sola ostia pei peccati, siede alla destra di Dio,but this man offering one host for sinnes, for euer sitteth on the right hand of God,hic autem unam pro peccatis offerens hostiam, in sempiternum sedet in dextera Dei, 13From henceforth expecting until his enemies be made his footstool.Aspettando del rimanente il tempo, che i nemici di lui siano posti sgabello a' suoi piedi.hence forth expecting, vntil his enemies be put the footestoole of his feete.de cetero exspectans donec ponantur inimici ejus scabellum pedum ejus. 14For by one oblation he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. For by one oblation hath he consummated for euer them that are sanctified.Una enim oblatione, consummavit in sempiternum sanctificatos.

15And the Holy Ghost also doth testify this to us. For after that he said:Ce lo attesta anche lo Spirito santo. Imperocché dopo di aver detto:And the holy Ghost also doth testifie to vs. For after that he said:Contestatur autem nos et Spiritus Sanctus. Postquam enim dixit: 16And this is the testament which I will make unto them after those days, saith the Lord. I will give my laws in their hearts and on their minds will I write them:Questa (è) l'alleanza, che io ritrarrò con essi dopo que' giorni, dice il Signore: inserirò le mie leggi ne' loro cuori, e nelle menti loro le scriverò:And this is the Testament vvhich I vvil make to them after those daies, saith our Lord, giuing lavves in their hartes, & in their mindes vvil I superscribe them:Hoc autem testamentum, quod testabor ad illos post dies illos, dicit Dominus, dando leges meas in cordibus eorum, et in mentibus eorum superscribam eas: 17And their sins and iniquities I will remember no more.E de' peccati, e delle iniquità loro non mi ricorderò già più.and their sinnes and iniquities I vvil novv remēber no more.et peccatorum, et iniquitatum eorum jam non recordabor amplius. 18Now, where there is a remission of these, there is no more an oblation for sin. But vvhere there is remission of these, novv there is not an oblation for sinnes. 19Having therefore, brethren, a confidence in the entering into the holies by the blood of Christ:Avendo adunque, o fratelli, la fidanza di entrare nel santo de' santi pel sangue di Cristo,Hauing therfore brethren confidence in the entring of he holies in the bloud of Christ:Habentes itaque, fratres, fiduciam in introitu sanctorum in sanguine Christi, 20A new and living way which he hath dedicated for us through the veil, that is to say, his flesh:Per quella, che egli per noi consagrò, strada nuova, e di vita, pel velo, cioè per la carne di lui, vvhich he hath dedicated to vs a nevv and liuing vvay by the vele, that is, his flesh, quam initiavit nobis viam novam, et viventem per velamen, id est, carnem suam, 21And a high priest over the house of God:E (avendo) un gran sacerdote, che presiede alla casa di Dio:and a high priest ouer the house of God,et sacerdotem magnum super domum Dei: 22Let us draw near with a true heart, in fulness of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with clean water.Accostiamoci con cuor sincero, con pienezza di fede, purgati il cuore dalla mala coscienza, e lavato il corpo coll'acqua monda, let vs approche vvith a true hart in fulnesse of faith, hauing our hartes sprinkled from euil consciencel and our body vvashed vvith cleane vvater, accedamus cum vero corde in plenitudine fidei, aspersi corda a conscientia mala, et abluti corpus aqua munda,

23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering (for he is faithful that hath promised):Conserviamo non vacillante la professione della nostra speranza, (imperocché fedele è colui, che ha promesso)let vs hold the confession of our hope vndeclining (for he is faithful that hath promised)teneamus spei nostræ confessionem indeclinabilem (fidelis enim est qui repromisit), 24And let us consider one another, to provoke unto charity and to good works:E siamo attenti gli uni agli altri per istimolarci alla carità, e alle opere buone:and let vs consider, one an other vnto the prouocation of charitie and of good vvorkes:et consideremus invicem in provocationem caritatis, et bonorum operum: 25Not forsaking our assembly, as some are accustomed: but comforting one another, and so much the more as you see the day approaching.Non abbandonando le nostre adunanze, come vogliono far taluni, ma facendovi animo, e tanto più, quanto che vedete avvicinarsi quel giorno.not forsaking our assemblie as some are accustomed, but comforting, and so much the more as you see the day approching.non deserentes collectionem nostram, sicut consuetudinis est quibusdam, sed consolantes, et tanto magis quanto videritis appropinquantem diem. 26For if we sin wilfully after having the knowledge of the truth, there is now left no sacrifice for sins:Imperocché volontariamente peccando noi dopo ricevuta la cognizione della verità, non ci resta già ostia poi peccati,For if vve sinne vvillingly after the knovvledge of the truth receiued, novv there is not left an host for sinnes,Voluntarie enim peccantibus nobis post acceptam notitiam veritatis, jam non relinquitur pro peccatis hostia, 27But a certain dreadful expectation of judgment, and the rage of a fire which shall consume the adversaries.Ma una terribile espettazione del giudizio, e l'ardore del fuoco, che sta per consumare i nemici.but a certaine terrible expectation of iudgement and rage of fire, vvhich shal consume the aduersaries.terribilis autem quædam exspectatio judicii, et ignis æmulatio, quæ consumptura est adversarios. 28A man making void the law of Moses dieth without any mercy under two or three witnesses:Uno, che viola la legge di Mosè, sul deposto di due, o di tre testimoni muore senza alcuna remissione:A man making the lavv of Moyses frustrate: vvithout any mercie dieth vnder tvvo or three vvitnesses.Irritam quis faciens legem Moysi, sine ulla miseratione duobus vel tribus testibus moritur: 29How much more, do you think he deserveth worse punishments, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God and hath esteemed the blood of the testament unclean, by which he was sanctified, and hath offered an affront to the Spirit of grace?Quanto più acerbi supplizi pensate voi, che si meriti chi avrà calpestato il Figliuolo di Dio, ed il sangue del testamento, in cui fu santificato, avrà tenuto come profano, ed avrà fatto oltraggio allo spirito di grazia?hovv much more thinke you, doth he deserue vvorse punishements vvhich hath troden the sonne of God vnder foote, and estemed the bloud of the testament polluted, vvherein he is sanctified, and hath done contumelie to the spirit of grace?quanto magis putatis deteriora mereri supplicia qui Filium Dei conculcaverit, et sanguinem testamenti pollutum duxerit, in quo sanctificatus est, et spiritui gratiæ contumeliam fecerit ?

30For we know him that hath said: Vengeance belongeth to me, and I will repay. And again: The Lord shall judge his people. For vve knovv him that said, Reuenge to me, I vvil repay. And againe, That our Lord vvil iudge his people. 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.Orrenda cosa ella è il cadere nelle mani di Dio vivo.It is horrible to fal into the handes of the liuing God.Horrendum est incidere in manus Dei viventis. 32But call to mind the former days, wherein, being illuminated, you endured a great fight of afflictions.Richiamate alla memoria quei primi giorni, ne' quali essendo stati illuminati, sosteneste conflitto grande di patimenti. But call to minde the old daies: vvherein being illuminated, you sustained a great fight of passions.Rememoramini autem pristinos dies, in quibus illuminati, magnum certamen sustinuistis passionum: 33And on the one hand indeed, by reproaches and tribulations, were made a gazingstock; and on the other, became companions of them that were used in such sort.Ed ora divenuti spettacolo di obbrobrio, e di tribolazione: ora fatti compagni di coloro, che erano in tale stato.and on the one part certes by reproches and tribulations made a spectacle: and on the other part made companions of them that conuersed in such sort.et in altero quidem opprobriis et tribulationibus spectaculum facti: in altero autem socii taliter conversantium effecti. 34For you both had compassion on them that were in bands and took with joy the being stripped of your own goods, knowing that you have a better and a lasting substance. For, you both had compassion on them that vvere in bondes: and the spoile of your ovvne goodes you tooke vvith ioy, knovving that you haue a better and a permanent substāce. 35Do not therefore lose your confidence which hath a great reward. Do not therfore leese your confidence, vvhich hath a great remuneration.Nolite itaque amittere confidentiam vestram, quæ magnam habet remunerationem.

36For patience is necessary for you: that, doing the will of God, you may receive the promise. For patience is necessarie for you: that doing the vvil of God, you may receiue the promise. 37For yet a little and a very little while, and he that is to come will come and will not delay. For yet a litle and a very litle vvhile, he that is to come, vvil come, and vvil not slacke. 38But my just man liveth by faith: but if he withdraw himself, he shall not please my soul.Ma il mio giusto vive di fede: che se si ritirerà indietro, non sarà accetto all'anima mia.and my iust liueth of faith. but if he vvithdravv him self, he shal not please my soule. 39But we are not the children of withdrawing unto perdition, but of faith to the saving of the soul. But vve are not the children of vvithdravving vnto perdition: but of faith to the vvinning of the soule.
