Christ rides into Jerusalem upon an ass. He casts the buyers and sellers out of the temple, curses the fig tree and puts to silence the priests and scribes.

1And when they drew nigh to Jerusalem and were come to Bethphage, unto mount Olivet, then Jesus sent two disciples,E avvicinandosi a Gerusalemme, arrivati che furono a Betfage al monte Oliveto, allora Gesù mandò due discepoli,AND vvhen they drevv nigh to Hierusalem, and vvere come to Beth-phagee vnto Mount-oliuet, then IESVS sent tvvo disciples,Et cum appropinquassent Jerosolymis, et venissent Bethphage ad montem Oliveti: tunc Jesus misit duos discipulos, 2Saying to them: Go ye into the village that is over against you: and immediately you shall find an ass tied and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to me.Dicendo loro: Andate nel castello, che vi sta dirimpetto, e subito troverete legata un'asina, e con essa il suo asinino: scioglietela, e conducetemela.saying to them, Goe ye into the tovvne that is against you, and immediatly you shal finde an asse tied and a colt vvith her: loose them & bring them to me:dicens eis: Ite in castellum, quod contra vos est, et statim invenietis asinam alligatam, et pullum cum ea: solvite, et adducite mihi: 3And if any man shall say anything to you, say ye that the Lord hath need of them. And forthwith he will let them go.E se alcuno vi dirà qualche cosa, dite, che il Signore ne ha bisogno: e subito ve li rimetterà.and if any man shal say ought vnto you, say ye, that our Lord hath neede of them: and forthvvith he vvil let them goe.et si quis vobis aliquid dixerit, dicite quia Dominus his opus habet: et confestim dimittet eos. 4Now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:Or tutto questo segui affinchè si adempisse quanto era stato detto dal Profeta, che disse:And this vvas done that it might be fulfilled vvhich vvas spoken by the Prophet, saying,Hoc autem totum factum est, ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per prophetam dicentem: 5Tell ye the daughter of Sion: Behold thy king cometh to thee, meek and sitting upon an ass and a colt, the foal of her that is used to the yoke. Say ye to the daughter of Sion, Behold thy king commeth to thee, meeke, & sitting vpon an asse and a colt the fole of her that is vsed to the yoke.Dicite filiæ Sion: / Ecce rex tuus venit tibi / mansuetus, sedens super asinam, / et pullum filium subjugalis. 6And the disciples going, did as Jesus commanded them.I discepoli andarono, e fecero, come aveva lor comandato Gesù:And the disciples going, did as IESVS commaunded them.Euntes autem discipuli fecerunt sicut præcepit illis Jesus.

7And they brought the ass and the colt and laid their garments upon them and made him sit thereon.E menarono l'asina e l'asinello, e misero sopra di essi le loro vestimento, e lo fecero montar sopra. And they brought the asse and the colt: and laide their garments vpon them, and made him to sit thereon.Et adduxerunt asinam, et pullum: et imposuerunt super eos vestimenta sua, et eum desuper sedere fecerunt. 8And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way: and others cut boughs from the trees and strewed them in the way.E moltissimi delle turbe disteser le loro vesti per la strada; altri poi tagliavano rami dagli alberi, e li gettavano per la strada:And a very great multitude spred their garments in the vvay: and others did cut boughes from the trees, and stravved them in the vvay:Plurima autem turba straverunt vestimenta sua in via: alii autem cædebant ramos de arboribus, et sternebant in via: 9And the multitudes that went before and that followed cried, saying: Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.E le turbe, che precedevano, e quelle, che andavangli dietro, gridavan dicendo: Osanna al Figliuolo di David: benedetto colui, che viene nel nome del Signore: Osanna nel più alto de' cieli.and the multitudes that vvent before and that folovved, cried, saying, Hosanna to the sonne of Dauid: blessed is he that commeth in the name of our Lord. Hosanna in the highest.turbæ autem, quæ præcedebant, et quæ sequebantur, clamabant, dicentes: Hosanna filio David: benedictus, qui venit in nomine Domini: hosanna in altissimis. 10And when he was come into Jerusalem, the whole city was moved, saying: Who is this? And vvhen he vvas entred Hierusalem, the vvhole citie vvas moued, saying, who is this?Et cum intrasset Jerosolymam, commota est universa civitas, dicens: Quis est hic ? 11And the people said: This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.I popoli però dicevano: Egli è Gesù il profeta da Nazaret nella Galilea. And the people said, This is IESVS the Prophet, of Nazareth in Galilee.Populi autem dicebant: Hic est Jesus propheta a Nazareth Galilææ. 12And Jesus went into the temple of God and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple and overthrew the tables of the money changers and the chairs of them that sold doves.Ed entrò Gesù nel tempio di Dio, e scacciò tutti quelli, che compravano, e vendevano nel tempio; e rovesciò le tavole de' banchieri, e le sedie di coloro, che vendevano le colombe:And IESVS entred into the temple of God, and cast out al that sold and bought in the temple, and the tables of the bankers, and the chaires of them that sold pigeons he ouerthrevve:Et intravit Jesus in templum Dei, et ejiciebat omnes vendentes et ementes in templo, et mensas numulariorum, et cathedras vendentium columbas evertit:

13And he saith to them: It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves.E disse loro: Sta scritto: La casa mia sarà chiamata casa di orazione: ma voi l'avete fatta spelonca di ladri.and he saith to them, It is vvritten, My house shal be called the house of prayer: but you haue made it a denne of theeues.et dicit eis: Scriptum est: Domus mea domus orationis vocabitur: vos autem fecistis illam speluncam latronum. 14And there came to him the blind and the lame in the temple: and he healed them.E si accostarono a lui nel tempio de' ciechi, e degli zoppi: e li risanò.And there came to him the blinde, and the lame in the temple: and he healed them. 15And the chief priests and scribes, seeing the wonderful things that he did and the children crying in the temple and saying: Hosanna to the son of David, were moved with indignation,Ma avendo i principi de' sacerdoti, e gli Scribi vedute le maraviglie da lui operate, e i fanciulli, che gridavano nel tempio: Osanna al figliuolo di David, arsero di sdegno. And the cheefe priestes & Scribes seeing the maruelous things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, & saying, Hosanna to the sonne of Dauid: they had indignatiō,Videntes autem principes sacerdotum et scribæ mirabilia quæ fecit, et pueros clamantes in templo, et dicentes: Hosanna filio David: indignati sunt, 16And said to him: Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus said to them: Yea, have you never read: Out of the mouth of infants and of sucklings thou hast perfected praise?E dissero a lui: Senti tu quel, che dicono costoro? Ma Gesù disse loro: Si certamente. Non avete mai letto: dalla bocca de' fanciulli, e de' bambini di latte hai renduta perfetta laude?and said to him, Hearest thou vvhat these say? And IESVS said to them, Very vvel, haue you neuer read, That out of the mouth of infants and sucklings thou hast perfited praise?et dixerunt ei: Audis quid isti dicunt ? Jesus autem dixit eis: Utique. Numquam legistis: Quia ex ore infantium et lactentium perfecisti laudem ? 17And leaving them, he went out of the city into Bethania and remained there.E lasciati coloro, se ne andò fuori della città a Betania; e quivi pernottò.And leauing them, he vvent forth out of the citie into Bethania, and remained there.Et relictis illis, abiit foras extra civitatem in Bethaniam: ibique mansit. 18And in the morning, returning into the city, he was hungry. And in the morning returning into the citie, he vvas an hungred.Mane autem revertens in civitatem, esuriit.

19And seeing a certain fig tree by the way side, he came to it and found nothing on it but leaves only. And he saith to it: May no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And immediately the fig tree withered away.E vedendo lungo la strada una pianta di fico, si accostò ad essa: e non vi trovò altro, che foglie, e le disse: Non nasca mai più da te frutto in eterno. E subito il fico si seccò.And seeing a certaine figtree by the vvay side, he came to it: and found nothing on it but leaues only, and he saith to it, Neuer grovv there fruite of thee for euer. And incontinent the figtree vvas vvithered. 20And the disciples seeing it wondered, saying: How is it presently withered away? And the disciples seeing it, marueled saying, Hovv is it vvithered incontinent?Et videntes discipuli, mirati sunt, dicentes: Quomodo continuo aruit ? 21And Jesus answering, said to them: Amen, I say to you, if you shall have faith and stagger not, not only this of the fig tree shall you do, but also if you shall say to this mountain, Take up and cast thyself into the sea, it shall be done. And IESVS ansvvering said to them, Amen I say to you, if you shal haue faith, and stagger not, not only that of the figtree shal you doe, but and if you shal say to this mountaine, Take vp and throvv thy self into the sea, it shal be done. 22And all things whatsoever you shall ask in prayer believing, you shall receive.E ogni qualunque cosa, che domanderete nell'orazione, credendo, la otterrete. And al things vvhatsoeuer you shal aske in prayer beleeuing, you shal receiue.Et omnia quæcumque petieritis in oratione credentes, accipietis. 23And when he was come into the temple, there came to him, as he was teaching, the chief priests and ancients of the people, saying: By what authority dost thou these things? And who hath given thee this authority? And vvhen he vvas come into the temple, there came to him as he vvas teaching, the cheefe Priests and auncients of the people, saying, In vvhat povver doest thou these things? and vvho hath giuen thee this povver?

24Jesus answering, said to them: I also will ask you one word, which if you shall tell me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.E Gesù rispose loro: Fo ancor io a voi un'interrogazione, alla quale se mi risponderete, vi dirò io pure, con quale autorità fo queste cose.IESVS ansvvering said to them, I also vvil aske you one vvord: vvhich if you shal tell me, I also vvil tel you in vvhat povver I doe these things.Respondens Jesus dixit eis: Interrogabo vos et ego unum sermonem: quem si dixeritis mihi, et ego vobis dicam in qua potestate hæc facio. 25The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven or from men? But they thought within themselves, saying:Il battesimo di Giovanni donde era egli? dal cielo, o dagli uomini? Ma eglino andavan pensando dentro di se, e dicevano:The Baptisme of Iohn vvhence vvas it? from heauen, or from men? But they thought vvithin them selues, saying,Baptismus Joannis unde erat ? e cælo, an ex hominibus ? At illi cogitabant inter se, dicentes: 26If we shall say, from heaven, he will say to us: Why then did you not believe him? But if we shall say, from men, we are afraid of the multitude: for all held John as a prophet. If vve shal say from heauen, he vvil say to vs, vvhy then did you not beleeue him? but if vve shal say from men: vve feare the multitude, for al hold Iohn as a Prophet. 27And answering Jesus, they said: We know not. He also said to them: Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. And ansvvering to IESVS they said, We knovv not. He also said to them, Neither do I tel you in vvhat povver I doe these things.Et respondentes Jesu, dixerunt: Nescimus. Ait illis et ipse: Nec ego dico vobis in qua potestate hæc facio. 28But what think you? A certain man had two sons: and coming to the first, he said: Son, go work to day in my vineyard. But vvhat is your opinion? A certaine man had tvvo sonnes: and comming to • the first, he said, Sonne, goe vvorke to day in my vineyard.Quid autem vobis videtur ? Homo quidam habebat duos filios, et accedens ad primum, dixit: Fili, vade hodie, operare in vinea mea.

29And he answering, said: I will not. But afterwards, being moved with repentance, he went.Ed egli rispose: Non voglio. Ma poi ripentito vi andò.And he ansvvering, said, I vvil not. But aftervvard moued vvith repentance he vvent.Ille autem respondens, ait: Nolo. Postea autem, pœnitentia motus, abiit. 30And coming to the other, he said in like manner. And he answering said: I go, Sir. And he went not.E accostatosi al secondo, gli disse lo stesso. E quegli rispose: Signore, io vado, e non andò.And comming to the other, he said likevvise. And he ansvvering, said, I goe Lord, and he vvent not.Accedens autem ad alterum, dixit similiter. At ille respondens, ait: Eo, domine, et non ivit: 31Which of the two did the father’s will? They say to him: The first. Jesus saith to them: Amen I say to you that the publicans and the harlots shall go into the kingdom of God before you. Which of the tvvo did the fathers vvil? They say to him, The first. IESVS saith to them, Amē I say to you, that the Publicans and vvhoores goe before you into the kingdom of God.quis ex duobus fecit voluntatem patris ? Dicunt ei: Primus. Dicit illis Jesus: Amen dico vobis, quia publicani et meretrices præcedent vos in regnum Dei. 32For John came to you in the way of justice: and you did not believe him. But the publicans and the harlots believed him: but you, seeing it, did not even afterwards repent, that you might believe him. For Iohn came to you in the vvay of iustice: and you did not beleeue him. but the publicans and vvhoores did beleeue him: but you seeing it, neither haue ye had repentance aftervvard, to beleeue him. There was a man, an householder, who planted a vineyard and made a hedge round about it and dug in it a press and built a tower and let it out to husbandmen and went into a strange country. An other parable heare ye: A man there vvas an housholder vvho planted a vineyard, and made a hedge round about it, and digged in it a presse, and builded a tovvre, and let it out to husbandmen: and vvent forth into a strange countrie.

34And when the time of the fruits drew nigh, he sent his servants to the husbandmen that they might receive the fruits thereof. And vvhen the time of fruites drevve nigh, he sent his seruants to the husbandmen, to receiue the fruites thereof. 35And the husbandmen laying hands on his servants, beat one and killed another and stoned another. And the husbandmen apprehending his seruants, one they beat, an other they killed, and an other they stoned.Et agricolæ, apprehensis servis ejus, alium ceciderunt, alium occiderunt, alium vero lapidaverunt. 36Again he sent other servants, more than the former; and they did to them in like manner.Mandò di nuovo altri servi in maggior numero di prima, e coloro li trattarono nello stesso modo.Againe he sent other seruants moe then the former: and they did to them likevvise.Iterum misit alios servos plures prioribus, et fecerunt illis similiter. 37And last of all he sent to them his son, saying: They will reverence my son. And last of al he sent to them his sonne, saying, They vvil reuerence my sonne. 38But the husbandmen seeing the son, said among themselves: This is the heir: come, let us kill him, and we shall have his inheritance. But the husbandmen seeing the sonne, said vvithin them selues, This is the heire, come, let vs kil him, and vve shal haue his inheritaunce. 39And taking him, they cast him forth out of the vineyard and killed him.E presolo, lo cacciarono fuora della vigna, e l'uccisero. And apprehending him they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him.Et apprehensum eum ejecerunt extra vineam, et occiderunt. 40When therefore the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do to those husbandmen? When therfore the lord of the vineyard shal come, vvhat vvil he doe to those husbandmen?Cum ergo venerit dominus vineæ, quid faciet agricolis illis ?

41They say to him: He will bring those evil men to an evil end and will let out his vineyard to other husbandmen that shall render him the fruit in due season. They say to him, The naughtie men he vvil bring to naught: and his vineyard he vvil let out to other husbandmen, that shal render him the fruite in their seasons.Aiunt illi: Malos male perdet: et vineam suam locabit aliis agricolis, qui reddant ei fructum temporibus suis. 42Jesus saith to them: Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? By the Lord this has been done; and it is wonderful in our eyes. Dal Signore è stata fatta tal cosa, ed è mirabile negli occhi nostri:IESVS saith to them, Haue you neuer read in the Scriptures, The stone which the builders reiected, the same is made into the head of the corner? By our lord was this done, and it is maruelous in our eyes.Dicit illis Jesus: Numquam legistis in Scripturis: Lapidem quem reprobaverunt ædificantes, / hic factus est in caput anguli: / a Domino factum est istud, / et est mirabile in oculis nostris ? 43Therefore I say to you that the kingdom of God shall be taken from you and shall be given to a nation yielding the fruits thereof. Therfore I say to you, that the kingdom of God shal be taken avvay from you, and shal be giuen to a nation yelding the fruites thereof.Ideo dico vobis, quia auferetur a vobis regnum Dei, et dabitur genti facienti fructus ejus. 44And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder.E chi cadrà sopra questa pietra, si fracasserà: e quegli, su di cui ella cadrà, sarà stritolato. And he that falleth vpon this stone, shal be broken: and on vvhom it falleth, it shal al to bruise him. 45And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they knew that he spoke of them. And vvhen the cheefe Priestes and Pharisees had heard his parables, they knevve that he spake of them.

46And seeking to lay hands on him, they feared the multitudes, because they held him as a prophet.E cercando di mettergli le mani addosso, ebber paura del popolo; perché lo teneva per profeta. And seeking to lay hands vpon him, they feared the multitudes: because they held him as a Prophet. •Et quærentes eum tenere, timuerunt turbas: quoniam sicut prophetam eum habebant.
