1Then therefore Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.Allora adunque Pilato prese Gesù, e lo flagellò.THEN therfore Pilate tooke IESVS, and scourged him.Tunc ergo apprehendit Pilatus Jesum, et flagellavit. 2And the soldiers platting a crown of thorns, put it upon his head: and they put on him a purple garment.E i soldati, intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela posero sulla sua testa: e lo copriron con una veste di porpora. And the souldiars platting a crovvne of thornes, put it vpon his head: and they put about him a purple garment. 3And they came to him and said: Hail, king of the Jews. And they gave him blows.E si accostavano a lui, e dicevano: Dio ti salvi, Re de' Giudei: e davangli degli schiaffi. And they came to him, and said, Haile king of the Ievves, and they gaue him blovves. 4Pilate therefore went forth again and saith to them: Behold, I bring him forth unto you, that you may know that I find no cause in him. Pilate vvent forth againe, and saith to them, Behold I bring him forth vnto you, that you may knovv that I finde no cause in him.Exivit ergo iterum Pilatus foras, et dicit eis: Ecce adduco vobis eum foras, ut cognoscatis quia nullam invenio in eo causam. 5(Jesus therefore came forth, bearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment.) And he saith to them: Behold the Man.E uscì fuora Gesù portando la corona di spine, e la veste di porpora. E disse loro (Pilato): Ecco l'uomo.IESVS therfore vvent forth carying the crovvne of thornes, and the purple vestiment. And he saith to them, Loe the man.(Exivit ergo Jesus portans coronam spineam, et purpureum vestimentum.) Et dicit eis: Ecce homo. 6When the chief priests, therefore, and the servants had seen him, they cried out, saying: Crucify him, Crucify him. Pilate saith to them: Take him you, and crucify him: for I find no cause in him. Vvhen the cheefe priests therfore and the ministers had seen him, they cried, saying, Crucifie, crucifie him. Pilate saith to them, Take him you, and crucifie him. for I finde no cause in him.

7The Jews answered him: We have a law; and according to the law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.Gli risposero i Giudei: Noi abbiamo la legge, e secondo la legge dee morire perché si è fatto Figliuolo di Dio.The Ievves ansvvered him, Vve haue a Law: and according to the Law he ought to die, because he hath made him self the sonne of God.Responderunt ei Judæi: Nos legem habemus, et secundum legem debet mori, quia Filium Dei se fecit. 8When Pilate therefore had heard this saying, he feared the more. Vvhē Pilate therfore had heard this saying, he feared more.Cum ergo audisset Pilatus hunc sermonem, magis timuit. 9And he entered into the hall again; and he said to Jesus: Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. And he entred into the Palace againe: and he saith to IESVS, Vvhence art thou? But IESVS gaue him no ansvver. Jesus autem responsum non dedit ei. 10Pilate therefore saith to him: Speakest thou not to me? Knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and I have power to release thee? Pilate therfore saith to him, Speakest thou not to me? knovvest thou not that I haue povver to crucifie thee, and I haue povver to release thee?Dicit ergo ei Pilatus: Mihi non loqueris ? nescis quia potestatem habeo crucifigere te, et potestatem habeo dimittere te ? 11Jesus answered: Thou shouldst not have any power against me, unless it were given thee from above. Therefore, he that hath delivered me to thee hath the greater sin. Per questo colui, che mi ti ha dato nelle mani, è reo di più, gran peccato.IESVS ansvvered, Thou shouldest not haue any povver against me, vnles it vvere giuen thee from aboue. Therfore he that hath betraied me to thee, hath the greater sinne.Respondit Jesus: Non haberes potestatem adversum me ullam, nisi tibi datum esset desuper. Propterea qui me tradidit tibi, majus peccatum habet. 12And from henceforth Pilate sought to release him. But the Jews cried out, saying: If thou release this man, thou art not Caesar’s friend. For whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar. From thence forth Pilate sought to release him. But the Ievves cried, saying, If thou release this man, thou art not Caesars frend. euery one that maketh him self a king, speaketh against Caesar.

13Now when Pilate had heard these words, he brought Jesus forth and sat down in the judgment seat, in the place that is called Lithostrotos, and in Hebrew Gabbatha. But Pilate vvhen he had heard these vvordes, brought forth IESVS: and he sate in the iudgemēt seate, in the place that is called Lithóstrotos, and in Hebrevv Gábbatha. 14And it was the parasceve of the pasch, about the sixth hour: and he saith to the Jews: Behold your king.(Ed era la Parasceve della Pasqua, e circa la sesta ora), e disse a' Giudei: Ecco il vostro Re.And it vvas the Parasceue of Pasche, about the sixt houre, and he saith to the Ievves, Loe your king. 15But they cried out: Away with him: Away with him: Crucify him. Pilate saith to them: shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered: We have no king but Caesar. But they cried, Avvay, avvay vvith him, crucifie him. Pilate saith to them, Shal I crucifie your king? The cheefe priests ansvvered, Vve haue no king, but Caesar.Illi autem clamabant: Tolle, tolle, crucifige eum. Dicit eis Pilatus: Regem vestrum crucifigam ? Responderunt pontifices: Non habemus regem, nisi Cæsarem. 16Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus and led him forth.Allora adunque lo diede nelle lor mani, perché fosse crocifisso. Presero pertanto Gesù, e lo menarono via. Then therfore he deliuered him vnto them for to be crucified. And they tooke IESVS, and led him forth.Tunc ergo tradidit eis illum ut crucifigeretur. Susceperunt autem Jesum, et eduxerunt. 17And bearing his own cross, he went forth to the place which is called Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha.Ed egli portando la sua croce, s'incamminò verso il luogo detto del Cranio, in Ebraico Golgotha:And bearing his ovvne crosse he vvent forth into that vvhich is called the place of Caluarie, in Hebrevv Gólgotha.Et bajulans sibi crucem exivit in eum, qui dicitur Calvariæ locum, hebraice autem Golgotha: 18Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the midst.Dove crocifissero lui, e con lui due altri, uno di qua, e uno di là, e Gesù nel mezzo.vvhere they crucified him, and vvith him two others, on the one side and on the other, and in the middes IESVS.ubi crucifixerunt eum, et cum eo alios duos hinc et hinc, medium autem Jesum.

19And Pilate wrote a title also: and he put it upon the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.E scrisse di più Pilato un cartello, e lo pose sopra la croce. Ed eravi scritto: GESÙ NAZZARENO RE DE' GIUDEI.And Pilate vvrote a title also: and he put it vpon the crosse. And it vvas vvritten, IESVS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE IEVVES.Scripsit autem et titulum Pilatus, et posuit super crucem. Erat autem scriptum: Jesus Nazarenus, Rex Judæorum. 20This title therefore many of the Jews did read: because the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city. And it was written in Hebrew, in Greek, and in Latin. This title therfore many of the Ievves did reade: because the place vvhere IESVS vvas crucified, vvas nigh to the citie: and it vvas vvritten in Hebrevv, in Greeke, and in Latin.Hunc ergo titulum multi Judæorum legerunt: quia prope civitatem erat locus, ubi crucifixus est Jesus, et erat scriptum hebraice, græce, et latine. 21Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: Write not: The King of the Jews. But that he said: I am the King of the Jews. The cheefe priests therfore of the Ievves said to Pilate, Vvrite not, The king of the Ievves: but that he said, I am king of the Ievves.Dicebant ergo Pilato pontifices Judæorum: Noli scribere: Rex Judæorum: sed quia ipse dixit: Rex sum Judæorum. 22Pilate answered: What I have written, I have written.Rispose Pilato: Quel, che ho scritto, l'ho scritto.Pilate ansvvered, That vvhich I haue vvritten, I haue vvritten.Respondit Pilatus: Quod scripsi, scripsi. 23The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified him, took his garments, (and they made four parts, to every soldier a part) and also his coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.I soldati poi, crocifisso che ebber Gesù, presero le sue vesti (e ne fecer quattro parti, una per ciascun soldato), e la tonaca. Or la tonaca era senza cuciture, tessuta tutta dalla parte superiore in giù.The souldiars therfore vvhen they had crucified him, tooke his garments (and they made foure partes, to euery souldiar a part) & his coate. And his coate vvas vvithout seame, vvrought from the toppe through out.

24They said then one to another: Let us not cut it but let us cast lots for it, whose it shall be; that the scripture might be fulfilled, saying: They have parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture they have cast lots. And the soldiers indeed did these things. Tali cose adunque fecero i soldati. They said therfore one to an other, Let vs not cut it, but let vs cast lottes for it vvhose it shal be. That the scripture might be fulfilled saying, They haue parted my garments among them: and vpon my vesture they haue cast lottes. And the souldiars did these things. 25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen. And there stoode beside the crosse of IESVS, his mother, and his mothers sister, Marie of Cléphas, and Marie Magdalene. 26When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son. Vvhen IESVS therfore had seen his mother and the disciple standing vvhom he loued, he saith to his mother: Vvoman, behold thy sonne.Cum vidisset ergo Jesus matrem, et discipulum stantem, quem diligebat, dicit matri suæ: Mulier, ecce filius tuus. 27After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own. After that, he saith to the disciple, Behold thy mother. And from that houre the disciple tooke her to his ovvne.Deinde dicit discipulo: Ecce mater tua. 28Afterwards, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said: I thirst. Aftervvard IESVS knovving that al things vvere novv consummate, that the scripture might be fulfilled, he saith, I thirst.

29Now there was a vessel set there, full of vinegar. And they, putting a sponge full of vinegar about hyssop, put it to his mouth. A vessel therfore stoode there ful of vinegre. And they putting a spongeful of vinegre about hyssope, offered it to his mouth.Vas ergo erat positum aceto plenum. Illi autem spongiam plenam aceto, hyssopo circumponentes, obtulerunt ori ejus. 30Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost.Gesù, adunque preso che ebbe l'aceto, disse: È compito. E chinato il capo, rese lo spirito.IESVS therfore vvhen he had taken the vinegre, said, It is cōsummate. And bovving his head, he gaue vp the ghost. 31Then the Jews (because it was the parasceve), that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day (for that was a great sabbath day), besought Pilate that their legs might be broken: and that they might be taken away. The Ievves therfore (because it vvas the Parasceue) that the bodies might not remaine vpon the crosse on the Sabboth (for that vvas a greate Sabboth day) they desired Pilate that their legges might be broken, and they might be taken avvay. 32The soldiers therefore came: and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him. The souldiars therfore came: and of the first in deede they brake the legges, and of the other that vvas crucified vvith him.Venerunt ergo milites: et primi quidem fregerunt crura, et alterius, qui crucifixus est cum eo. 33But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.Ma quando furono a Gesù, quando videro, che era già morto, non gli ruppero le gambe:But after they vvere come to IESVS, vvhen they savv that he vvas dead, they did not breake his legges,Ad Jesum autem cum venissent, ut viderunt eum jam mortuum, non fregerunt ejus crura,

34But one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side: and immediately there came out blood and water.Ma uno de' soldati aprì il di lui fianco con una lancia, e subito nè usci sangue, e acqua.but one of the souldiars vvith a speare opened his side, and incontinent there came forth bloud and vvater.sed unus militum lancea latus ejus aperuit, et continuo exivit sanguis et aqua. 35And he that saw it hath given testimony: and his testimony is true. And he knoweth that he saith true: that you also may believe.E chi vide, lo ha attestato: ed è vera la sua testimonianza. And he that savv it, hath giuen testimonie: and his testimonie is true. And he knovveth that he saith true, that you also may beleeue. 36For these things were done that the scripture might be fulfilled: You shall not break a bone of him. For these things vvere done that the scripture might be fulfilled, You shal not breake a bone of him.Facta sunt enim hæc ut Scriptura impleretur: Os non comminuetis ex eo. 37And again another scripture saith: They shall look on him whom they pierced.E parimenti un'altra Scrittura dice: Volgerai; gli sguardi a colui, che hanno trafitto. And againe an other scripture saith, They shal looke on him vvhom they pearsed.Et iterum alia Scriptura dicit: Videbunt in quem transfixerunt. 38And after these things, Joseph of Arimathea (because he was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews), besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave leave. He came therefore and took away the body of Jesus. And after these things Ioseph of Arimathaea (because he vvas a disciple of IESVS, but secrete for feare of the Iewes) desired Pilate that he might take avvay the body of IESVS. And Pilate permitted. He came therfore, and tooke avvay the body of IESVS.Post hæc autem rogavit Pilatum Joseph ab Arimathæa (eo quod esset discipulus Jesu, occultus autem propter metum Judæorum), ut tolleret corpus Jesu. Et permisit Pilatus. Venit ergo, et tulit corpus Jesu.

39And Nicodemus also came (he who at the first came to Jesus by night), bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Nicodemus also came, he that at the first came to IESVS by the night, bringing a mixture of myrrhe and a•oés, about an hundred poundes. 40They took therefore the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths, with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. They tooke therfore the body of IESVS, and bound it in linnen clothes vvith the spices, as the maner is vvith the Ievves to burie. 41Now there was in the place where he was crucified a garden: and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein no man yet had been laid. And there vvas in the place vvhere he vvas crucified, a garden: and in the garden a nevv monument, vvherein no man yet had been laide. 42There, therefore, because of the parasceve of the Jews, they laid Jesus: because the sepulchre was nigh at hand.Quivi adunque a motivo della Parasceve de' Giudei, perché il monumento era vicino, deposero Gesù.There therfore because of the Parasceue of the Ievves, they laid IESVS, because the monument vvas hard by.Ibi ergo propter parasceven Judæorum, quia juxta erat monumentum, posuerunt Jesum.
